log, timber frame, hybridWe realized a long time ago that there are many ways to
build a home. Any of our home designs can be constructed
using one of three approaches: log, timber frame, or hybrid.
Log Homes: Time and trends mean nothing to the perennial
beauty of log homes. The most basic of construction, yet the
most dynamic of structures, log homes are a favorite of those
people who long for simple comfort and beautiful design. Hand-
crafted or milled logs of eastern white pine or other species are
used with the utmost precision to create a home that uniquely
fits your personality and lifestyle.

Timber Frame Homes: Utilizing timber post and
beam, with wood joinery held in place by wooden pegs,
timber frame structures are made to last hundreds of years.
Allowing the homeowner to vary the wood look throughout
the home, timber frame uses a mixture of tongue & groove,
drywall and other materials to create a strikingly beautiful,
energy efficient, building system.
Hybrid Homes: Perhaps you prefer the simple beauty
of logs for your entrance, but want the drama of timber
frame in your living room. Or you have to have a stone
fireplace for your outdoor living area. Using a combination
of building techniques and structural and decorative
elements, hybrid homes appeal to homeowners looking for
the best of all worlds.

after all, it’s YOUR dream! No matter which building system you choose, we go beyond
the traditional log and timber approach to customize your home
with sophisticated features that create a unique look. Here’s
where the distinctive beauty of your home will shine as you
choose the materials for your beams, siding, roof, and accents.
Many materials are available to give your home a superbly
natural look with distinctive character. We call these Natural
Elements,® and all are reclaimed, recovered, recycled, or
renewable. If you want a certain look, such as Western Frontier or
Eastern Appalachian, we can help you select a palette of materials
to create that look.

after all, it’s YOUR dream!
Many of the Natural Elements® in our homes use
materials that we reclaim in our Natural Element Homes
workshop. This approach is ecologically sound and saves
you money. We fashion items such as brackets, braces,
and rafter tails from lumber that has been culled for reuse.
This means that your builder doesn’t have to invent each
architectural element specified by the designer. The mill-
crafted elements are shipped to your job site, where they are
simply assembled, trimmed to fit, and installed. This gives
you custom craftsman construction without all the extra
labor costs.
Natural Elements® are provided by nature and refined by
us. We help you select from the many materials available to
determine the key architectural elements of your home.

Building a home and a legacy
takes time, patience and care.
Natural Element Homes has a rich history in the
log home and timber home industry. We’ve helped
many people realize their dream home and fulfill a
part of their legacy. With each new home that goes
up, we help another friend build their legacy. All the
while, we are building a legacy of our own.
Natural Element Homes was born out of market-
driven demand for something more from the log home
industry. In the early 2000’s, we began to see many
consumers look into the log home industry for a particular
kind of home. They described a home that had elements
found in log homes, but most preferred not to use log
walls. They wanted a home that was natural and rustic,
yet modern and elegant. And they wanted the home
to possess outstanding curb appeal, as it would be a
testament to their own vision. They wanted to put their
own DNA into the home as they designed it, and it must
inspire them to a higher quality of life. We found that most
considered this home to be the last home they would ever
build, and they wanted it their way this time.
We decided to put a name on what they described,
and the Natural Element Home® was born! Born
of nature and your vision for “rustic elegance” and
“mountain modern” living.
After 10 years of operating as a “brand name” in the
marketplace, Natural Element Homes was incorporated
as a stand-alone entity. We selected the best people from
our organization to move forward and help us build our
legacy. Designing and building your home is part of our
purpose and legacy. We thank you for joining with us.
“Since we’re both
building a legacy,
let’s build together!”

How will my home will look
and feel when completed?
The interior of your home is where you will spend
most of your time, and how you finish it will affect
the ambiance you create for everyday living and your
budget. There are several key areas where you have
choices to make:
Beams, Columns, Railing, Stairs, Flooring, Wall
coverings & treatments, Stone, Ceilings, Trim,
Cabinets, Counter tops, Appliances, Lighting,
Plumbing fixtures and baths, Colors, and Furnishings.
Some interior finishes cost less than others, of course,
and your home builder and Building Consultant can help
you with these choices. Often times, we can create a
particular look and feel in more than one way, and one
method may be less expensive than the other.
There are also general guidelines regarding costs
that you can follow. For example, sheet rock on walls
and ceilings costs less than wood tongue-and-groove.
Carpeted floors cost less than wood or tile floors. Man-
made stone costs less than real stone. Smaller beams and
columns cost less than larger ones, and no beams costs
less than having beams.
There are several price point options available for
appliances, cabinetry, counter tops, bathroom fixtures,
lighting fixtures, and furnishings. A professionally
designed interior generally costs more than doing it
yourself. In general, a hybrid home costs less than a log home,
and a log home costs less than a true timber frame home.
Obviously, there are many choices to make that
will affect the overall cost of your home. These can be
useful in regulating your budget. Your home builder
and Building Consultant will simplify the choices
for you and discuss and select options to meet your
budget.

the kitchen, wood f loors, and a
beautiful color palette (different
colors of stain were used). The
basic appliances and site-built
bar and seating keep costs low.
The cathedral ceiling shown
at right is cost effective. The
roof system was built with 2x10
framing with R-30 insulation
and covered with wood T&G.
Douglas Fir beams were used for
structural collar ties. Fixed glass
panels were made and installed
by the local glass company.
$ ----> The great room of this log home
has wood f loors, man-made
stone on the fireplace insert,
wood T&G wall covering on the
gable end, circle-top windows, a
Douglas Fir exposed beam R-30
roof system with wood T&G,
knotty pine trim, and hand-
peeled twig railing.
The structure at left is a hybrid
structure with authentic antique
materials applied to the interior
walls and ceilings. The ceiling is
barn wood, and the beams are 150
year old hand-hewn oak beams.
The fireplace features authentic
stacked stone. All doors have tran-
soms above for natural lighting.

$ ---->
This beautiful home is modestly
priced and features a Douglas
Fir exposed beam R-30 roof
system with wood T&G, wood
f loors, sheetrock walls, painted
trim, craftsman window grilles,
upgraded kitchen appliances,
cabinets and counter tops.
Adding a home theater to your
home is a definite luxury. This
theater features multi-level f loors
and seating with a game table and
refreshment area at the top level of
the room. Premium carpeting, wall
coverings, seating and audio-visual
equipment were used.
<---- $$
This great room features log
walls, carpeted f loors and a wood
cathedral ceiling. There are large
diameter wood columns sup-
porting the loft. Lower cost items
include man-made stone to mantle
height, carpeting, and simple trim.
The large volume of the room adds
to its cost per square foot.
$$$ ---->
The kitchen shown here features
custom cabinetry, granite tops and
a raised bar seating area. Modest
appliances were used, and wood
f loors tie everything together. The
ceilings are exposed round log
beams supported by a round log
column. There are wood T&G
ceilings above.

The log home shown here has
many cost-effective features:
rope deck railing, wood
windows, fiberglass doors, site-
made and installed fixed glass,
log siding on the chimney chase,
single fascia boards, 30-year
asphalt shingle roof, lower cost
stain and finish, no gutters.
Another cost-effective log home
is shown here and features
log-style deck railing, wood
windows, fiberglass doors, site-
made and installed fixed glass,
man-made stone on the chimney
chase, single fascia boards, 30-
year asphalt shingle roof, lower
cost stain and finish, no gutters.
$ ----> This beautiful home is also
a hybrid, which keeps costs
lower, and it features a low-
maintenance fiber cement
exterior. Fiber cement shingles
cost significantly more than real
wood shingles, but they require
virtually no maintenance. Up-
graded windows and stone.
This custom log home features 10-
inch diameter Swedish-cope logs
with a draw-knife finish, staggered
log ends at corners, premium clad
windows, premium window trim,
elaborate roof overhang log truss,
twig in-fill, heavy cedar shingle
roof, and copper f lashing. WOW!

$ ---->
Another cost-effective home is
shown at left. This is a hybrid
home with fiber cement, low
maintenance siding and trim
with real cedar shingles in the
front gable. The timber accents
are simple, and the stone is not
used heavily. A 30-year asphalt
shingle was used. It looks great!
This beautiful structure features
our premium grade bark siding
(1-inch thick with deep furrows),
custom white pine timber brackets,
wood T&G for soffits, premium
clad windows and trim, painted
stepped fascia boards, heavy
cedar shingle roofing, and a nice
set of horns.
<---- $
There are certain elements of the
garage at right that add to its cost.
There are multiple colors used,
skip-peeled large diameter corner
posts, hand-hewn rafter tails, hand-
split cedar shingle siding, stepped
fascia, and arched top garage
doors. Such features increase costs
significantly.
$$$ ---->
The photo at right shows one of our
largest logs (8x12), large diameter
natural-taper log columns and
beams, real stacked-stone column
bases, multi-level concrete walk-
way, stepped roof fascia boards,
lifetime warranty asphalt shingles,
and upgraded exterior lighting.

We have fabulous home plans
and three ways to build them!
The following pages are loaded with some of the best log and timber plans you’ll find. We are happy to modify every plan, and we
encourage you to make your home uniquely personal. If you don’t see what you’re looking for, we have many more plans online. If you find a plan
somewhere else, we can use it for inspiration and create a custom home that’s even better. If you wish to start from scratch for a total custom home, we
have the best designers in the business to work with you. Basically, we’ve got design covered!
And don’t forget our Online Design Service. In all cases, you may participate in the development of your home plans as much or as little as you want.
We simply schedule an online meeting, and you can see our designer’s screen on your own computer. You and the designer can discuss the plan and
changes you wish to make, and you see the changes made in real time as you work together. Your builder, your spouse, your family - up to 15 people in
different locations - can join in and collaborate. You see your home in 3D from inside, outside, or any angle in between, and you don’t have to operate any
software at all. Just sit back, relax, and we’ll do the work for you. It’s fast, efficient, and fun! The Online Design Service.
Also, we can build most any plan you see as a log home, a timber frame home, a hybrid home, and even a modular home. No matter which building
system best meets your needs (log, timber frame, or hybrid), we can design the home plan you’ve chosen for your selected building system.
Choose a home plan. Choose a building system. We’ll customize your plan for you!

Nothing says Americana quite like a cabin.
Cabins have long been a part of our great history, from
the first American settlers, to our early pioneers, to
today’s American family. Cabins give more than shelter.
They give great memories and good times. The word
“cabin” means different things to different people. Some
think of an antique Appalachian retreat, while others
imagine a Rocky Mountain ski chalet, and others conjure
up thoughts of a quaint Adirondack cottage. No matter
what the style, size, or shape, the function of the cabin is
to offer a warm, welcoming retreat where you can relax
and get away from it all. In other words, a “comfy cabin.”
At Natural Element Homes, we know
“cabins,” and we know “comfy.” And we’ve created a
division to focus simply on “Comfy Cabins.” We have
literally built thousands of cabins during the last four
decades, and our Comfy Cabins division can provide
you with a wide variety of cabin plans, quality
building materials and building systems to create the
exact style you are after, a simple process for design
and construction, and, most importantly, affordable
pricing that brings the possibility of cabin ownership
to most people.

Now you can have all the full, flavorful character of Natural Element
Homes and the many benefits of a Comfy Cabin Kit. We are pleased to
introduce our top-shelf assortment of cabin plans - The Comfy Cabins
Black Label collection.
Plans from our Black Label collection have been professionally designed by
premier designers and architects, so you don’t have to go through all the fuss,
bother, and expense of an original architectural design. In fact, you may simply
choose a plan as is, or we can tweak it to be just as you want it. Since these
plans have good architectural bones, your customized version will possess all
the curb appeal and functionality originally envisioned by the designer.
The Black Label plans may be constructed in many different ways. Some
people want a log cabin, while others are looking more for a timber frame style.
Still others want a modern mountain design with all the latest conveniences
and technology. That’s why we specialize in all-of-the-above. We have options
galore to add to your Comfy Cabin Kit. If you can dream it, we can build it that
way!

The Jewel Box Cabin collection is from the brilliant mind and blessed hand of Shawn Fisher of Shawn Fisher Design. We sat down with Shawn years ago
and explained our vision for Natural Element Homes. We commissioned him to help us create plans with “rustic elegance” and “mountain modern” features and to
help define Natural Element Homes. And we’re so proud of what Shawn created.
We call these designs “Jewel Boxes” because they are filled with precious gems and decorative extras that adorn the functional design and
produce unique architectural flair and outstanding curb appeal. Talk about BLING! These homes are loaded with bling! And if you think the designer
renderings are special, just wait until you see the real thing - an actual home built the way the designer intended. Talk about WOW-factor! These homes
have it! ENJOY!
