Throughout National Volunteer Week, Earth Day, Global Youth Service Day, and Join Hands Day, the Volunteer Center For Anne Arundel County is working with local agencies to provide you, your friends and families a variety of opportunities to serve your community and HAVE FUN!

National Volunteer week is about inspiring, recognizing and encouraging people to seek ways to engage in their community. It’s about showing the nation that we meet our challenges not as isolated individuals but as members of a true community with all of us working together. Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay (Throughout Area)Alliance for the Chesapeake Bay is an established conservation, non-profit organization whose mission is to restore the Chesapeake Bay through collaborative engagement with all the communities that work and live in the Bay area. May 2nd, 2013, Forestry Course for Realtors: The Alliance’s Forestry for the Bayprogram is offering a four hour professional course for Maryland realtors. Often the only person many new landowners have contact with in terms of understanding the nature of their land purchase is their real estate broker. The next course is scheduled for May 2nd at Wor-Wic Community College in Salisbury. Future courses will also be held this fall in both Cecil County and Baltimore County. Forestry for the Bay intends eventually to be able to offer this course in other bay watershed states. American Cancer Society Relay for LifeRelays for Life are a fun-filled overnight activity that mobilizes communities across the country to celebrate survivorship, remember those who lost their lives to cancer, and raise money for the fight against cancer. Many volunteers, mature teens and older, are needed to assist at each site with a variety of tasks, including setting up each field the day of the event and break down following each event. Annapolis City Fair (Annapolis, Central County)Saturday, May 11, 2013, 11 a.m. – 5 p.m. and Sunday, May 12, 2013, noon – 5 p.m. This 2nd Annual Annapolis City Fair being held at the City Dock & National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame will showcase the services, opportunities, and diversity of our historic community. The City of Annapolis, in cooperation with the National Sailing Center & Hall of Fame, is seeking public agencies, cultural institutions, sports associations, service organizations, educational institutions, environmental groups, neighborhood associates, sailing groups and other non-profits to participate. There is no charge for exhibitors to reserve space or the public to attend. Groups must bring their own tent, tables and chairs. Anne Arundel Community CollegeApril 22 – 27: The PSSO Service Committee of AACC is comprised of staff that work at the college and we are planning a clean-up and spruce-up of the Twin Oaks Park in Arnold off Peninsula Farm Road. We have met with the Dept. of Recreation and Parks to identify what is needed and the specific tasks. The College will tap into the faculty, staff and students for labor.  We are physically right across the street from the location so we see this as a “good neighbor” effort.  The target dates are the week of April 22-27. Anne Arundel County Dept. Recreation & Parks (North County)Anne Arundel Rec and Parks is announcing the following youth volunteer programs for 2013; information and application forms are available at http://www.aacounty.org/RecParks/volunteer/youth_volunteer.cfm or contact Wendy Scarborough at [email protected] or (410) 222-7313 for more information. Applications must be submitted no later than May 3, 2013. Counselor-in-Training (CIT) Program: Youth candidate volunteers are being sought for this year’s program.  Due to increased interest in the CIT program, acceptance has become more competitive. The CIT program is now offered for 3-two week sessions in our Summer Fun Center locations and Quiet Waters Park. Summer Serve Leadership Challenge 2013.  The Volunteer Summer Serve Leadership Challenge 2013 (VSSLC) program is a 2-week volunteer program for youth who have completed 7th

grade and are younger than 16.  A total of three different sessions will be offered this summer for a fee of $100/session.  Participants may apply for one or more sessions to learn about and discuss various topics ranging from school year volunteer opportunities to conflict resolution strategies and social issues that they may face in today’s society. Youth who successfully complete the program may earn community service hours as well as gaining work experience that will help them prepare for employment interviews, applying for college, and other life skills.  Youth Conservation Corps (YOUTH CORPS) 2013 Program: Youth completing grade 8 June 2013 up to the age of 16 are welcome to apply. The program will be held daily from 9 am–3 pm for two 2-week sessions during the month of July. Volunteer experience will include park conservation and clean up at Lake Waterford Park as well as at other county facilities. This is a first come first serve program with a maximum number of participants.

Anne Arundel County Literacy CouncilLiteracy tutors are needed for combating adult illiteracy; after completing training, you make your own schedule and locations with your assigned student or you can tutor at local detention centers. Their workshop will cover reading strategies with a focus on learning styles and Howard Gardener's Multiple Intelligences--an interactive approach that will suggest more activities that will help boost your student's reading comprehension. Books for International Goodwill (B.I.G) Project (Annapolis, Central County)Thousands of books gather dust in storage rooms and attics, while thousands of students and adults in developing countries lack both textbooks and recreational reading. Volunteers drop off good used books and/or help sort 8:00 am–12:00 noon on the second and fourth Saturdays each month (volunteers should call to verify) at the B.I.G. warehouse at 2000 Capital Dr., Annapolis. Individuals of high school age, and older, are welcome to help on a "drop-in" basis. Select volunteers are welcomed Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays to sort and shelve books for future Book Sales. Foster Grandparent ProgramMay 6-10, 2013, Senior Corps Week Senior Corps utilizes the skills, talents, and experience of older adults age 55(+) to meet a wide range of community challenges through Foster Grandparent Program (FGP). During Senior Corps Week, FGP volunteers will continue to who make a positive impact in public schools, head start centers, Boys & Girls Clubs, Dept. of S.S., and special education schools to mentor children in need. Epilepsy Foundation, April 20, 2013 Walk, Washington, D.C.The Epilepsy Foundation is the national voluntary nonprofit agency dedicated solely to the welfare of the almost 3 million people with epilepsy in the U.S. and their families. The organization works to ensure that people with seizures are able to participate in all life experiences; to improve how people with epilepsy are perceived, accepted and valued in society; and to promote research for a cure. A large number of volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks prior to and on walk day for registration, distribution of T-shirts, set up, route management, information tent, expo set up, kids area, food and water distribution, and much more. Friends of Hancock’s Resolution (North County)The Friends volunteer group operates and preserves this historic farmstead in Pasadena, which dates to 1785, and had an important role in the War of 1812. Volunteers, 18 and older, are needed to give tours of the house and gardens to visitors from 1 to 4 pm on Sundays from April through October. Training is provided. Volunteer gardening assistants are needed and days/times are flexible. Other volunteer projects include assisting with historical research, archeology, public education and fundraising. Special events that may need volunteers: 10 am - 4 pm, Sun, Apr 21, 2013 Lilac Festival: Featuring the oldest grove of lilacs open to the public in Anne Arundel County. Also featuring Live Sheep Shearing in the 18th century way, beekeeping demonstrations, and there will be exhibits of historic crafts. A light lunch will be available. House and gardens open for tour. Sunday, May 5, 2013, Herb Day: Herb Day will have experts from Willow Oak Farm. Select herbs for sale. Beekeeping discussions and demonstrations.

Friends of Quiet Waters ParkThe non-profit organization supports the operation of the park and the events that take place there. Volunteers, age 15 and up, are needed throughout the year for a variety of tasks to support events such as Earth Day in April, Summer Concert Series from Jun.–Sept., Howl-O-Ween Bark ‘n Bash in late Oct., and the Arts Festival held in the fall each year. There is a current need for volunteers to help with interpretive programs at the Park. Programs last an hour and are provided to the public on a weekly or bi-weekly basis; there are a variety of themes ranging from amphibians to wetland demonstrations, and no special skills or degrees are required There may be training provided depending on the topic matter, and volunteers can work with park staff to lead and co-lead thematic interpretive programs.. GreenScape, Saturday, April 20, 2013The Annapolis Recreation and Parks Department has announced Spring GreenScape 2013 to take place on April 20, 2013. GreenScape is a volunteer effort, sponsored by the City of Annapolis through many of its departments, which encourages and supports individuals and organizations to plant and maintain native gardens in public areas throughout the City. The City provides plant materials, mulch, trash bags and gloves; and the community provides volunteers who want to make a difference in their community. This is the 22nd year of this annual program of beautification, clean-up and planting in public spaces throughout the City of Annapolis by volunteers. Guiding Eyes for the Blind–Puppy training classes Thurs. evenings (Throughout area)This nonprofit organization serves the Bay Region by raising puppies as potential future guide dogs. Volunteer puppy raisers are needed to provide the love, support and direction these puppies need to prepare them for formal training. Volunteer raisers (as young as 13 with parental supervision) take puppies into their homes for fourteen to eighteen months and teach them manners and social skills. In addition to daily work and play with their dogs, raisers attend local classes and puppy evaluations.  Website: http://www.guidingeyes.org.  Puppy classes are 7:00 pm on 2nd and 4th Thursday nights in Bowie. Happy Helpers for the Homeless (North County/Baltimore), Saturdays and Sundays)This nonprofit organization provides food, toiletries, and clothing to the hungry and homeless. Volunteers, as young as 6, are needed Saturdays (11:30am-2:30pm) and Sundays (1:00-4:00pm), including Apr. 20-21, and Apr. 27-28, 2013, to assist in distributing items and bag lunches in downtown Baltimore and Glen Burnie. Ongoing donations needed: men’s socks, toiletry items, men’s clothing, blankets, shoes in very good condition, sturdy napkins/paper towels, mustard, juice boxes, fold-over sandwich bags, lunch meat and fresh fruit. Ongoing through winter is the, coat, blanket, and gloves drive. Volunteers can meet in Glen Burnie to caravan up to Baltimore. There is also a critical need for cash donations to help pay rent for space used by Happy Helpers. Contact Bobbi Coffman at 443-433-2416 for more information about volunteering on all projects and events. Bag a Breakfast Project. Put together a bag breakfast for a homeless individual. Include box of cereal, with spoon and cup, poptart, fruit, hot chocolate package with cup and spoon, juice box, and napkin. Can be done anytime. Just drop off at Happy Helpers. Holiday Donations: Clothing (all sizes and ages), Food (especially turkeys or hams and trimmings), Christmas presents: backpacks, hats, gloves, socks, McDonald’s meal certificates, toys, books, thermal underwear, and sweatshirts, toiletries. Can pick and drop off after 4 pm, seven days a week. Contact Bobbi as above.

Historic London Town and Gardens (South County)This Edgewater historic site seeks persons interested in history and/or horticulture to become docents, historic interpreters and gardeners at this 17th-18th century tobacco port. Volunteers give site tours, house tours or demonstrate colonial crafts and daily life. They may work in historic or ornamental gardens. Jug Bay Wetlands Sanctuary, Lothian, MD (South County)At the Sanctuary, older teens and adults collect water samples, clear trails, weigh turtles, guide visitors on nature walks, draw maps, lead canoe trips, make posters, seine for fish, host the Visitor Center on weekends, and more. Learn about two invasive non-native plants, and then remove them from the forest. After removal, they’ll be part of lunch! All ages welcome.

Maryland Therapeutic RidingLocated in Crownsville, Maryland Therapeutic Riding (MTR) is a Premier Accredited Therapeutic Riding Center that offers therapeutic horseback riding lessons for children and adults with special needs. Volunteers, ages 14 and up, assist with riding lessons and are needed throughout the week to assist with horse care, barn and facility maintenance. Naptown barBAYq Contest and Music Festival, May 4-5, 2013 A substantial number of volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks for this fun event sponsored by the Parole (Annapolis) Rotary Club; the event will be held from 11 a.m–10 p.m., Sat., May 4 and from Noon–6 p.m. on Sun., May 5, 2013, at the AA County Fairgrounds in Crownsville. Help is needed with admissions/ticket sales/welcoming, contest coordination, volunteer check-in/support, merchandise & adult beverage sales, and more. There will be 44 bands on 3 stages, 50 Professional BBQ teams competing for $10,000 plus trophies, about 100 vendors, a dozen flavors of beer, arts and crafts, tons of food, and all kinds of entertainment for kids. National Aquarium Chesapeake Bay Initiative Habitat Restoration Projects (North County)Saturday, April 27, 2013, Ft. McHenry Field Day: The ten-acre tidal wetland bordering Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine now serves as a refuge for many species of

wildlife including sea ducks, heron, muskrats, and red-winged blackbirds.  Join the Conservation Department at the National Aquarium in Baltimore at Fort McHenry National Monument and Historic Shrine to help clean up the bay.  The National Aquarium in Baltimore is looking for community volunteers, ages 14 and older, to participate, rain or shine.  Activities include debris cleanup, planting native marsh grasses, trail maintenance and more. National Electronics Museum (North County)The museum near BWI Airport serves students and the general public by collection, preservation and display of significant artifacts and literature and the commemoration of the creativity and dedication of pioneers and workers in the field of electronics. Volunteers, age 14 and up, are needed week days and weekends for education and outreach, for special events, as an administrative assistant, as collections assistants, and for visitor services. Sat., Apr. 27, 2013, Robot Fest 2013: Robot Fest is a one-day event being held at the National Electronics Museum for students of all ages and for those with the unquenchable urge to create new, previously unseen forms from lifeless electronics and mechanical parts of metal and plastic. National Kidney Foundation of MarylandThe National Kidney Foundation, a major voluntary nonprofit health organization, is dedicated to preventing kidney and urinary tract diseases, improving the health and well-being of individuals and families affected by kidney disease and increasing the availability of all organs for transplantation. Volunteers are needed to help with the upcoming Kidney Walk as follows: 9:00 am, Sun., May 5, 2013, 2013 Kidney Walk: Community volunteers are needed to serve on a planning committee, help with walk day registration, set up and break down, and more. Enjoy free entrance to the Baltimore Zoo where the event is being held while joining us in the fight against Kidney Disease. The walk raises money for screening programs, education and patient services in Baltimore and surrounding counties as well as supporting national research and patient advocacy programs. North County High School, Mock Job Interviews April 15–22, 2013North County High School in Glen Burnie is looking for volunteers to conduct mock interviews with 11th graders. Interview questions will be provided, and volunteers just have to ask the questions and assess how well the interviewees do. Pets on Wheels/Life Enrichment Program/Mom & Me (Throughout County )Volunteers for all these programs visit one-on-one or with their pets or children at homeless shelters, nursing homes, hospitals, assisted living facilities, adult day-care centers or other sites where people lack visits from family and friends. Volunteers are asked to share at least one hour each week at the facility of your choice. With more than 76 facilities to choose from throughout the county, there are many opportunities to brighten someone's day close to your home. Minimum age

Project Linus- Anne Arundel County (Throughout County)The mission of this nonprofit organization is to provide love, a sense of security, warmth and comfort to children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need, through gifts of new, handmade blankets and afghans, lovingly made by volunteer “blanketeers.” Volunteer “Blanketeers” of all ages are needed to sew, quilt, knit or crochet washable and child friendly new blankets for such children, up to age 18. This is a rewarding and fun service opportunity for interested individuals and groups, as well as an opportunity to socialize as you complete these blankets, much like an old-fashioned quilting bee, but with a modern flair. Blankets also can be made at home and dropped off at collection sites which include The Community Center, Capital Vac & Sew, and the Fabric Chest, depending on the time of year. Save the Bay Day, 9:00 am–12 Noon, Sat., April 27, 2013 Volunteers will help beautify Lake Waterford Park, Pasadena, MD and protect the Chesapeake Bay through planting, spreading mulch, raking, clearing, and cleaning the main park area and woods surrounding the lake. Volunteers will also help control stormwater runoff and learn about rain-gardens, weed and plant garden areas, clean up underbrush, trash and other debris from Lake Waterford Park. Experts will be on site to discuss problems facing the Watershed. Tasks will be assigned. Individuals, families and groups are welcome to register to volunteer. Volunteers under age 16 must be accompanied by an adult (1 adult per 6 children). Wear work clothes and closed-toe shoes. Scenic River Trust Walk for the Woods, 7 AM–1PM, April 20-21, 2013Walk for the Woods is an annual event co-sponsored by Scenic Rivers Land Trust and Anne Arundel County Department of Recreation and Parks. The walk is an opportunity to explore 900+ acres of fields, streams, and woodlands and to celebrate this natural heritage on one of the largest tracts of forest left in the county. This unique piece of county parkland in Crownsville will be open to the public for these two special days while planning continues to develop public access. Walks can be taken alone, with your group, or in an organized group with a walk leader provided. The walk is free to all. YWCA of Annapolis & Anne Arundel County The YWCA Annapolis and Anne Arundel County provides comprehensive integrated services for individuals and families through domestic violence shelter and hotline; sexual assault services including a hotline, counseling, support groups and hospital accompaniment for rape victims, legal, career, counseling and family services; a mentoring  program  held after-school for middle school students and an all-girls program located at the high school. There is an immediate need for volunteers for the Phenom Mentoring Program at Meade High School on Tues. & Thurs. from 2:15-4:30 pm. Trainings will be offered to any mentors who wish to receive any tips and hints on successful mentoring as the program progresses. Volunteers do not need to attend every day, but at least come at least once a week on a consistent basis either weekly or bi-weekly. There will be opportunities to mentor one-on-one, offer homework help, assist on college applications, chaperone weekend field trips, help out guest speakers, and facilitate fun projects such as artwork, crafts, and group discussion sessions.
