News from the Clinic

Head Lice As reported in the September 2002 American

Academy of Pediatrics, Clinical Report:

“Head lice are the cause of much embarrass-

ment and misunderstanding, many unnecessary

days lost from school and work, and millions

of dollars spent on remedies. It is probably im-

possible to totally prevent head lice infesta-

tions. Head lice are not a health hazard or a

sign of uncleanliness and are not responsible

for the spread of any disease.” There is no stat-

ute in Texas that addresses excluding children

with head lice from school. Lice are not a pub-

lic health threat. They do not carry disease.

Therefore, the Department of State Health Ser-

vices does not monitor or track cases of head

lice.

It is recommended that parents inspect their

child’s hair on a regular basis and treat for

head lice accordingly. Your campus nurse is

available as an educational resource in this

area as well as to assist parents in identification

of the presence of lice or lice eggs in their

child’s hair. Extended absences due to head

lice will be unexcused.

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE

Students usually begin each new

school year with excitement and

enthusiasm. The anticipation of new classes,

new friendships, and renewing old friend-

ships provide real motivation for daily atten-

dance at school during the first few nine-

weeks. During the 3rd nine weeks our atten-

dance rate is below the state recommended

standard of 97%. Our rate was 96.00%. I

am asking for your cooperation and assis-

tance in helping improve our attendance this

last nine weeks. I request that students be

kept at home only when it is necessary for

medical reasons. I also ask that school day

appointments be kept to a minimum. Parents

and school working together can meet the

educational goals of all students.

Kinder Field Trip

Our Kindergarten students will be tak-

ing a field trip to the Texas State

Aquarium and the Corpus Christi Mu-

seum on Thursday, May 14, 2015.

DOMINO’S DOUGH RAISING NIGHT!!!

APRIL 2, 2015

Domino’s donates $$$ to the school for every pizza ordered on this date. If your child’s homeroom has the highest participation, they will receive a free pizza party. Order a pizza on the above date, turn in the slip of paper your child will bring home, and help earn money for East Cliff Elementary.

BEST CLUB NEWS

The BEST Club will hold its next meeting on Wednesday, April 8, 2015, at 3:25 PM un-til 4:00 PM in the gym. The students will work on beau-tifying the campus.

April Newsletter

3rd grade

The 3rd grade students are in the midst of our recorder unit. The songs that the students

are checking off come from The Complete Recorder Resource Vol. I. While we don’t have

the book, the following apps are available for purchase and contain some or all of the songs

in the book. I highly recommend downloading one of the apps for your child to practice

with. FREE APP! Learn and Play Recorder Lite --Students can download the app for free, and

play along with the first 8 songs of the Recorder Resource book.

$3.99 Learn and Play Recorder app contains the complete book. It includes play along

music for all of the songs in the book. It also includes note practice.

1st grade

The first grade program will be on Tuesday, May 5th after the 6:00 p.m. PTO meeting.

Their dress rehearsal will also be on Tuesday at 8:15 a.m. Further information will follow.

SMENCILS-Thank you to those of you who have supported this fundraiser. We will con-

tinue to buy new instruments for music. I purchased a glockenspiel and a set of bongo

drums with a stand at the TMEA convention.

CELELBRATE EARTH DAY!! RECYCLE! Thanks to those of you who send in items for re-

cycling. The company I work with sends East Cliff a check for the items submitted. This is

an on-going fundraiser, so please continue to recycle ink cartridges, toner cartridges,

phones, and other electronic devices with me.

4th grade

The 4th grade students just finished a Recorder Recital. They each composed their own

song, then they performed it for their classmates. They did a TREMENDOUS job!

COUNSELOR’S CORNER By Sharon Musich

Cool Kids skill for the month of April:

TIPS TO HELP YOUR CHILD IMPROVE IN TEST-TAKING

Do encourage children. Praise them for the things they do well. If they feel good

about themselves, they will do their best. Children who are afraid of failing are more

likely to become anxious when taking tests and more likely to make mistakes.

Make sure your child attends school regularly. Remember, tests do reflect children’s

overall achievement. The more effort and energy a child puts into learning, the more

likely he/she will do well on tests.

Meet with your child’s teacher as often as possible to discuss his/her progress. Ask

the teacher to suggest activities for you and your child to do at home to help

prepare for tests and improve your child’s understanding or school work. Parents and

teachers should work together to benefit students.

Review and discuss test results, especially with teacher-made tests. Discuss wrong

answers and find out why your child answered as they did.

Pillar of character for the Fifth Nine Weeks TRUSTWORTHINESS

Be honest

Don’t deceive, cheat, or steal

Be reliable—do what you say you’ll do

Be loyal—stand by your family, friends, community, and country

Don’t misuse or abuse property belonging to others
