What Is To Be Decided?

By the end of March 2020, CBE administration will make a recommendation to the CBE Board of Trustees about the location and program delivery of the National Sport School for the 2020-21 school year and beyond. A final decision about the future location and delivery of the program will be made by the Board of Trustees by end of May 2020.

What We Heard From You

Desire for one-year extension; remain at WinSport for 2020-21

Find a cost-neutral solution Transportation challenges Teachers at NSS should stay with the

program Moving the school to another high school

would put the students at a disadvantage A loss to Calgary in support of future

Olympians Other emails, proposals and feedback

Responding to Your FeedbackOne-Year Extension and Cost-Neutral Options

The CBE is not able to operate NSS at WinSport in a cost-neutral way, even with a $1 lease rate. There are additional savings by operating within an existing CBE school.

WinSport fees do not go to the CBE.

WinSport fees or other dollars raised cannot pay for NSS CBE staff salaries.

Follow-Up on Proposal From a Group of Concerned Parents

Thoughtful consideration and review.

Cost reductions similar to CBE analysis.

Budget constraints and uncertainty make it challenging to grant a one-year extension at WinSport next year.

While this scenario allows for approx $500,000 in savings from the current budget and staffing levels,

options A and B offer approx. $1,000,000 in savings (Approx. $820,000 in salaries and $180,000 in equipment,

materials, lease and operating costs.

Responding to Your FeedbackTransportation and NSS Teachers Moving with Students

Given budget constraints, the CBE cannot provide transportation. Partners or other organizations may be able to provide.

Some teachers would move with students in case of move to Bowness High School.

If teachers are not required as a specific program requirement, they would be placed in another school.

Responding to Your FeedbackMoving would put students at a disadvantage & it’s a loss to Calgary in support of future Olympians

Over the 25 year history of this school, regardless of where it was located, the NSS has promoted strong academic learning and sports excellence.

1994 - NSS founded and located at William AberhartHigh School.

2003 - NSS moved from William Aberhart to Ernest Manning.

2011 - NSS moved from Ernest Manning to WinSportleased space. The occupancy of leased space was to be temporary until a permanent location secured.
