Local and Seasonal
Almost all retailers opted to publish an ad this week, with just under 2% of regularly reported stores opting to withhold ads due to the Covid-19 crisis. Though ad numbers were on the low side, grocers had plenty to offer. TN tomatoes, NJ blueberries, MO greens, WI zucchini, MI green beans, OH cabbage, and TX cantaloupe were just a few of the seasonal, locally grown ripe for the picking at stores. Organic produce was exceptionally well promoted this week. Gladiolas were very popular in floral departments.
Total ad numbers this week were 310,402, a 2% increase from last weeks 303,882. Ad numbers this week were 25% lower than this week last year. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 197,518 (63% of all ads), onions and potatoes 16,268 (5%), vegetables 95,291 (31%),herbs 721, ornamentals 604, and hemp 879. The number of ads for organic produce was 53,314, 17% of total ads.
The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included only red cherries at 47%. Significant decreases included nectarines (white 28%, yellow 17%), blueberries at 25%, peaches (yellow at 19%, white at 16%), strawberries (organic 19%, conventional 10%), Hass avocados at 14%, and mangos at 10%.
