Advertised Prices for Specialty Crops at Major Retail Supermarket Outlets ending during the period of 08/22 to 09/031,2

Pumpkin Spice in August

Undeterred by raging hurricanes, record high temperatures, and epic wildfires, the first few ads for pumpkins appeared this week. There was also a smattering of ads for pumpkin spice foods and potted mums. Corn, berries, melons, squash, clementines, tangerines, grapes, and tree fruit were prominent. Local produce was well promoted, primarily from the Northern tier states. Face coverings were showcased among other school supplies.

Total ad numbers this week were 324,871, a 3% increase from last weeks 314,555. Last years total ad numbers for the same week were 21% higher than this year. This week, only 1% of retailers declined to publish a weekly ad due to Covid-19. The total number of ads broken out by commodity groups: fruit 195,436 (60% of all ads), onions and potatoes 18,743 (6%), vegetables 103,759 (32%), herbs 1,104, ornamentals 5,829, and hemp 617. The number of ads for organic produce was 47,787, 15% of total ads.

The following are the prices of major advertised items (3,000 plus stores) this week, compared to the same week last year. Significant increases in price for fruit this week included Fuji apples at 23%, cantaloupes at 23%, strawberries at 19%, tangerines at 16%, seedless watermelons at 16%, and yellow peaches at 10%. Significant decreases included seedless grapes (organic white and organic red at 26%, black at 14%, white at 10%), avocadoes at 17%, blueberries (18 oz at 13%, 1 pint at 12%), and pluots at 10%. There were no significant changes in price for onions and potatoes this week. Significant increases in vegetable prices this week included corn at 59%, yellow squash at 15%, and zucchini at 10%. Significant decreases included cucumbers at 36%, grape tomatoes at 25%, and Roma tomatoes at 12%.
