NATIONAL PARKS IN CROATIA

Brijuni• Brijuni are beautiful islands and National Park in the Adriatic Sea.

• the two largest islands are Big Brijun (7 km2) and Little Brijun (1.7 km2)

• Brijuni are famous for the Brijuni meeting on 31st July 1995 when the Croatian President, Franjo Tudjman and some army generals agreed to the final military plan that resulted in the liberation of the Croatian territory.

Kornati• National Park Kornati includes many

splendid islands in central Dalmatia, west from Šibenik, in Šibenik-Knin County.

• It was declared the National Park in 1980 and then were placed under protection

• There are as many as 89 islands that attract tourists from all parts of the world

• Land part of the park is privately owned

Krka• Krka is also national park in Croatia,

known for its many lakes and waterfalls• it was proclaimed a national park on

January 24, 1985.• it’s interasting that hydropower plant

Jaruga below the waterfall Skradinski buk is the second oldest hydropower plant in the world and the first in Europe. It was built on 28th August 1895, just three days after the world's first hydroelectric power plant at Niagara Falls

Mljet• The Island of Mljet is particularly

important for preservation of plants• There are large oak and pine forests • Saplunara and Blace on the eastern end

of the island, with excellent sandy beaches and forest of Aleppo pine and pine are especially protected

Paklenica• the Paklenica karst river canyon is a

national park in Croatia• it is located adjacent to Starigrad,

northern Dalmatia, at the southern slopes of Velebit mountain, not far from Zadar

• the most attractive and most valuable parts of South Velebit are surely the impressive canyons of Velika Paklenica and Mala Paklenica

Plitvice Lakes• The Plitvice Lakes are probably the oldest

national park in Southeast Europe and the largest national park in Croatia

• the national park is world famous for its 17 lakes arranged in cascades

• through different climatic influences and the large difference in elevation within the protected area, a multifaceted flora and fauna has been created

Risnjak• is a mountain in the Risnjak National Park, in

Gorski Kotar, Croatia• the name of the massif probably comes from

„ris”, the Croatian word for lynx• the vegetation is very diverse• thirty different plant communities have been

recorded, of which the most common are beech and fir forests which go up to 1240 m

• the highest peak of Risnjak mountain is "Risnjak" or Veliki Risnjak at 1528

North Velebit• the Northern Velebit National Park covers

109 km2 of the northern section of the Velebit mountain, the largest mountain in Croatia

• the park reserve is protected and visitors cannot pass through except on designated trails

• inside the reserve there are the Visibaba (Galanthus) botanical reserve

• the peak Zavižan (1676 m) is located within the park
