Introduction to NIDDCP • Iodine is essential micronutrient.
Required for
-optimal mental & physical development
-regulation of body metabolism .
• The disorders caused due to deficiency of nutritional iodine in the food/diet are called Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDDs).
• IDD may lead to
-abortions & stillbirths,
-goiter,
-cretinism & dwarfism,
-retarded mental & physical development
-deaf mutism, squint etc.

IDD SURVEY • During 2012-13

—Urine and Salt samples tested at State IDD Lab, Punjab
• 13147 Urine Samples (age group 6-12 yrs.) & 25622 Salt Samples have been tested by State IDD Lab & District IDD Labs, Punjab.
• Two Urine Samples contained Iodine content less than 100 ug/l (adequate levels).
• 827 Salt Samples contained Iodine content less than 15 parts per million.
• Result shared with districts.

• 20 Question booklet in Punjabi about common FAQs on Iodine Salt & Deficiency manifestations of IDD has been printed & distributed.

• Exhibition regarding importance of iodized salt and ill effects of IDD displayed
• Banners regarding importance of iodized salt printed & distributed to all CH & Sub-DHs

• Bulk SMSs for creating awareness about IDD among general masses were sent to mobile users.
• Radio Jingle regarding importance of iodized salt released through AIR.
• Competitions (essay, slogan writing, race, painting etc.) among school children done at district level.
• Seminars, Exhibitions & Awareness Camps to make people aware about importance of iodized salt
