Premiering at National Glass Centre, Constructions is a mid-career solo exhibition of new work by Jeffrey Sarmiento, supported by a publication and an international tour.

Jeffrey Sarmiento’s sculptures utilise glassmaking technologies both ancient and modern to express the complexities that underpin cultural identity.

Create:Digital – Part of Northern Design Festival 2013 5 October – 10 November

As part of the Northern Design Festival, Create:Digital presents the work of twelve designers combining creativity with digital technology to produce innovative products. The exhibition will feature pieces formed using a range of processes from 3D printing to coding.

Create:Digital highlights surface, jewellery and product design that pushes the boundaries of new manufacturing techniques and recognises the role of digital data in our lives.

Featured designers include Michael Young, Interaction Research Studio, Dominic Wilcox, Silvia Weidenbach and Timorous Beasties.

Colin Rennie Digital-Glass Interface 23 November – 5 January

HAN is a distinct Chinese character referring to one of the oldest dynasties in China and is associated with a period of knowledge, production and wealth. With Dutch designer and innovator Gijs Bakker as their Creative Director, HAN Gallery supports and promotes Eastern designers whose work links contemporary design and ancient culture.

An exhibition showcasing new work by Colin Rennie, Programme Leader for BA(Hons) Glass and Ceramics. Paying homage to the age of enlightenment, Colin’s work is experimental. It explores the singular pursuit of an idea or dream, whilst considering the relationship between our understanding of the digital world and the physical object.

Colin’s work blends 3 dimensional modelling and analysis with traditional glassblowing skills and techniques, creating work which is both modern and nostalgic.

Stories of Glass in Sunderland Permanent Exhibition

Free Glass Making Demonstrations

On loan to National Glass Centre for one year from the National Museums of Scotland, this exhibition showcases 74 pieces by 54 different artists from the Dan Klein and Alan J. Poole Collection. Dan Klein was elected Professor of Glass and Ceramics at the University of Sunderland in 1996 and continued to work for the Glass and Ceramics department until 2007. This impressive selection presents the work of some of the leading British Studio Glass artists, outlining the progression of the British Studio Glass Movement from the 1960s through to today.

Our Glass Making and One-to-One Glass Blowing Experiences offer everyone the opportunity to try their hand at blowing their own glass object, no matter what their skill level.

Sunderland has a rich heritage of glass making that dates back to 674AD. Benedict Biscop, founder of the twin monastic settlements of Wearmouth-Jarrow, brought skilled craftsmen from Gaul to create the first stained glass window in England for St Peter’s Church, Monkwearmouth. Using compelling personal stories from local people and striking audio visual display, this interactive exhibition charts the origins, growth and legacy of glass making in the City.

Our amazing daily glass blowing, lathe and flame working demonstrations are free and run throughout the day. Experience the heat of our 1000 degree furnace and watch our expert glass making team craft stunning pieces before your eyes. You can even have a go at making something yourself with our glass blowing experiences.
