Singapore as a Global R&D Hub

• Established strong base of R&D capabilities • Academic Medical Centres (National University Health System, and

SingHealth/Duke-NUS Medical School)

• Industry-oriented research institutes in A*STAR that straddle the spectrum from fundamental science to applied research

• Globally-competitive research-intensive universities (National University of Singapore (NUS) and Nanyang Technological University (NTU)




Singapore as a Global R&D Hub

• Built up a robust network of international collaborations e.g. • Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE)

– Institutional-level collaborative research that brings together Berkeley, Cambridge, ETH Zurich, Hebrew University, MIT, Shanghai Jiaotong, TUM, NUS and NTU.

• Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR)

– E.g. Collaboration with University of Southampton’s Marine and Maritime Institute in marine and offshore

– E.g. Collaboration with RIKEN on life sciences, biotechnology and material science





• Growth of public-private research partnerships • Industry Alignment Fund has catalysed formation of joint labs such as the

with notable companies such as iCarsClub (raised $70M of follow-on funding)

• Early Stage Venture Fund supported more than 30 Series A startups, with successful exits such as Brandtology ($31M) and YFind Technologies ($15M)

• Emergence of unicorns1 that are locally based or founded by Singaporeans (Garena and Razer)

• Singapore ranked 10th in the world (and 1st in Asia) in the Global Startup Ecosystem Report 2015

Seeks to catalyse innovative ideas and research in Singapore that can positively transform the experience of ageing in Singapore through 3 key research thrusts, (i) lengthening of health span; (ii) productive longevity; (iii) ageing in place

National Innovation Challenge on Active and

Confident Ageing

Individual Research Grant Supports basic and translational clinical research that are relevant to human health and wellness, as well as research into the causes, consequences, diagnosis, prevention and treatment of human diseases

Young Individual Research Grant YIRG is a sub-category of IRG, and a first step for new investigators to a first independent national level grant



Urban Solutions and Sustainability (USS)


To develop a sustainable and liveable city through integrated solutions for Singapore and the world
