The Virgin Australia Melbourne Fashion Festival is renowned for discovering and showcasing emerging Australian fashion design talent.

The Festival’s National Designer Award is Australia’s most prestigious fashion award fostering excellence in the fashion industry. The Festival is a champion of emerging Australian design talent and this esteemed annual

Award is testament to this.

The Award encourages excellence within the Australian fashion industry, acknowledging designers in their first five years of business who excel in

creative design, fashion innovation, high quality manufacturing standards, unique style and the potential to contribute to the future growth of

Australian fashion.

The National Designer Award winner will receive a high value business development prize pack designed to acknowledge the designer(s) significant

contribution to the Australian fashion industry, reward them for their creativity and excellence in design, and importantly provide resources to

assist the label's development into the future.

• The label has been established forless than five years;

• The label has been available atretail for at least 18 months;

• The collections are available for commercial sale in Australia;

• The business is financially sustainable;

• The designer/s has not previously won the award under a different label name

• The label demonstrates the potential to make a positive contribution to the future growth of the Australian fashion industry; and

• The application complies with the Conditions of Entry below.

The National Designer Award is open to fashion designers and fashion partnerships where the main place of business is based in Australia. Applicants will be judged on

the extent to which they meet the following judging criteria:

SELECTION CRITERIA

Any application or acceptance to be a part of the Festival’s National Designer Award is at the sole responsibility of the applicant and the Melbourne

Fashion Festival Ltd. will be indemnified of any risk or claims.

The judging panel’s selection decisions are confidential and final and no correspondence will be entered into. The Festival will not provide critical

analysis or feedback.

ROUND ONE – CAPSULE FOLIOApplicants are required to submit a ‘capsule folio’ of work, in hard and

soft copy, to be reviewed by the judging panel. The capsule folio submission must include the following elements:

• Profile of the label, outlining background and history, designerbiography, current stockists and business plan details;

• A 200 - 400 word design statement detailing the creativerationale of the 2017 Autumn/Winter collection;

• Six (6) A4 pages with sketches or images of the 2017 Autumn/Winter collection; and

• Six (6) photographs/images or look book showing examples ofpast work.

ROUND TWO – PRESENTATION & INTERVIEWA shortlist of applicants will be chosen as finalists to compete in the second stage of judging. This involves an interview with the National Designer Award judging panel.Applicants are required to present six (6) key looks from their Autumn/Winter 2017

collection. At the conclusion of the second stage of judging the winner is determined.

• Applicants are encouraged to limit their submissions to A4 size• The folio must be provided in hard copy and soft copy on a USB and

include an application form;• All sketches and photographs are to be clearly labelled with designer(s)

name(s);• Applicants are required to pay an administration fee of $66.00 inc GST

(payable by EFT);

FURTHER REQUIREMENT

All finalists and unsuccessful applicants will be notified via email in December 2016. Round 2 judging will take place in February 2017, and the winner announcement will take place during the Festival in March 2017 as

well as David Jones instore event. Finalists are required to attend these events in person, in Melbourne.

Once notified, all successful applicants will be required to work with the Festival and their appointed production and PR agencies to prepare:

• A fashion presentation to industry and media on inJanuary 2017;

• Media and PR opportunity fulfilment• Winner Announcement event staged during the Festival

on 1 March 2017

Finalists located outside of Victoria will be furnished with interstate return flights for the above judging round attendances. The Festival will not insure or pay freight or customs charges for collections sent to the

Festival by the successful applicants.
