London is a truly global city: it is home to eight million people from all four corners of the globe speaking more than 300 languages.

The city is made up of vibrant boroughs and neighbourhoods, each with its own unique features and communities. In London, world-renowned landmarks and department stores are often only around the corner from quirky markets, small boutiques, designers’ studios, the latest restaurants and bars, theatres, and thriving arts and performance spaces.

What makes Camberwell so special? For over a century, this small College (1,600 students) with a big reputation has been at the heart of a bohemian community that encourages inventiveness, collaboration and curiosity. The College sits beside the South London Gallery in one of the city’s most vibrant, urban boroughs – a lively, friendly place brimming with artists’ studios. Come to Camberwell and you will notice a strong set of values – of equality and fairness, of respect and tolerance, and a real sense of place and connection with the world around us. The College has an extensive range of professional workshops and facilities, including a Digital Media Centre, one of the largest printmaking centres in the UK, open access ceramic, wood, metal and plastic workshops, and various specialist darkrooms, processing rooms and photographic studios. Camberwell is currently undergoing a major upgrade which will see new facilities including a modern lecture theatre, on-site accommodation and library open in 2017.

Chelsea’s handsome, neo-Baroque exteriors hide a multicultural mix of students and staff, a world-renowned art and design library, and cutting-edge facilities. These include a digital print studio, an audiovisual editing studio, specialist equipment for textile design (knitting and sewing machines, looms, digital and screen printing workshops, and print and dye facilities), a foundry and 3D workshops in casting, ceramics, metalwork, and woodwork. Chelsea is also home to London’s largest open-air gallery which hosts all sorts of events from film screenings to large scale installations, with international artists exhibiting alongside current students. Chelsea’s students enjoy views over the river Thames, and a special relationship with their next-door neighbour, Tate Britain, the UK’s national gallery of British art from 1500 to the present day. Chelsea is one of the University’s smaller Colleges with 1,400 students, and it has a long and distinguished history going back more than a hundred years.

Our Colleges

Central Saint Martins Generations of internationally renowned artists, designers and performers – individuals whose work has defined or transformed our times – began their creative journeys at Central Saint Martins (CSM). After 150 years, CSM now has an award-winning home in a vast refurbished Victorian granary at the heart of London’s developing cultural quarter of King’s Cross, with further classrooms and studios in two other sites: Archway and Richbell Place. The College’s workspaces are the backbone of its courses, providing a place for students to make and create. These include workshops for casting, ceramics, digital printing, fashion, jewellery, knitting, letterpress, metal, painting, photography, post-production, weaving and woodwork, amongst other resources. With nearly 5,000 students, CSM has a palpable creative energy, which drives its close working relationships with the creative industries. Its shows, exhibitions, events, publications and research outputs make it a major force. The College best suits independent, risk-taking students who embrace the freedom of self-direction.

London College of FashionLondon College of Fashion’s rich heritage, and responsiveness to changes in design practice, has positioned it as a leading global provider of fashion education. Known worldwide as a centre of excellence and the proving ground of big names like Jimmy Choo, Paul Austin and Linda Bennett, the UK’s only specialist fashion college works hand in glove with its industry partners to prepare students for a successful career in fashion. LCF’s 5,000 students study across six campuses throughout London, from Shoreditch to Oxford Circus, and follow a range of programmes in fashion design, marketing, merchandising or fashion management. Footwear and accessories students study at the renowned Cordwainers College, also part of LCF. London College of Communication (LCC)works at the cutting edge of new thinking so its students are ready to launch their careers and define the future of the creative industries. Located in a busy part of London, LCC lists the London Eye, the Southbank film, art and theatre complex, and Shakespeare’s Globe amongst its near neighbours. Its 5,000 students take full advantage of the outstanding facilities of this unique institution, which include photographic and TV studios, darkrooms, interactive media and animation suites, broadcast and print newsrooms as well as specialist printing, printmaking and letterpress workshops. LCC’s teachers make it their mission to meet the real needs of the communication, media and design industries. For LCC, getting ahead means getting immersed – students are often commissioned to work on live briefs for major companies such as Nike (graphic design for clothing), The National Trust and Nokia. The College is also proud to house a selection of famous archives and special collections, including those of filmmaker Stanley Kubrick.

About us

The warm, close-knit community spirit of historic Wimbledon, our smallest College with just 1,100 students, is integral to its success in producing outstanding graduates of fine art, and theatre and screen design. An easy 15 minutes by train from the centre of London, its well-equipped studios, workshops and exhibition spaces are surrounded by leafy open spaces. Wimbledon’s range of specialist facilities include metal, wood, print, dye, costume, and technical arts and special effects workshops, as well as an animation suite, darkrooms, a sound studio, a film and video studio, and green screen facilities. The recent renovation of the 150-seat theatre to incorporate sound and film studios, along with the opening of a sustainable studio building has further enhanced the facilities there. Students comment that the College is far enough away from the centre of London to have space in which to think and work, but close enough to be able to access London’s rich cultural life.

You are likely to be an art, design, fashion, communications or performance major, with a strong background and interest in these areas. You will:– study with local degree students for one,

two or three terms

– be fully integrated into your course and UK student life

– get an intensive, fast-paced and immersive learning experience, delivered through individual and group work, crits, projects, seminars and lectures, as well as visits to museums, galleries and studios

– study exclusively within your chosen subject area, taking classes that are assigned to you in order for you to develop specialist technical skills within your chosen field

– spend time working independently and be quick to adapt to a more conceptual way of learning that is likely to be quite different to what you are used to. You will have more freedom within your programme and will be expected to develop, explore and build your own ideas and creative thought processes

– be given a flexible timetable which might change from week to week

– have the opportunity to enhance your time at UAL by joining a three-week European Art History module that includes a guided study trip to Berlin

If you are accepted, our Course Directors will determine whether you are most suited to join Year One or Year Two of your chosen course. Study Abroad students are not invited to join Year Three, as much of this final year is taken up with personal projects and research

European Art History: London & BerlinStudents joining an integrated Study Abroad programme at any UAL College have the option to take the European Art History module at the start of the autumn term or end of the spring term.

Based at Chelsea College of Arts, this module offers you the opportunity to learn about the art, history, environment and culture of London and Berlin through an intensive three-week programme of lectures, visits and discussion groups.

Your learning will be enhanced by a four-day, guided study trip to Berlin. This visit will add a new perspective to your Study Abroad experience, giving you greater insight into the development of European society through art and design.

You are likely to have a strong interest in art, design or fashion and will have taken a number of classes in these areas. You will possibly be from a Liberal Arts background but most definitely be strongly motivated, ready for an educational adventure and looking for a study experience that:

– is designed exclusively for Study Abroad students

– has smaller class sizes

– is delivered through a style of study that you may be familiar with from your home institution (the teaching approach is similar to that employed in US universities)

Summer courses vary in length depending on the College, and are a great opportunity for undergraduate students who cannot study for a full semester or year. We have programmes both for students who have already completed a year or more of full-time study in their specialist area, and for those with little or no experience in the specialism they will be studying. Summer courses provide an intensive experience of practical projects, individual tutorials, workshops and often include visits to places of interest…experience the best of London!

Study Abroad students also have a variety of private accommodation options, available all year round.

Praed Street apartmentsThese privately rented, shared apartments are located just a ten-minute walk from Marble Arch and one of central London’s most popular shopping destinations, Oxford Street. Underground and mainline rail station Paddington is also a short walk away.

Each spacious apartment is made up of shared twin or triple bedrooms and comes equipped with the following facilities and features: –fully-furnished kitchen–living room with flat-screen TV–weekly cleaning service including a linen change

Homestays and house sharesHomestays are a popular choice among students looking for an authentic taste of British life, with host families based in good residential areas within Zones 2 and 4 of the London transport network. A weekly laundry service is available within family homes, and students have a choice of three meal plans:

–bed and continental breakfast–half board: bed, continental breakfast and evening meal–self-catering: room only with use of family kitchen

House shares are ideal for students looking for a more sociable and independent experience. Each house can accommodate between three and eight residents with shared facilities including a kitchen, living room with TV, dining room, one or two bathrooms and in the majority of properties, a garden with patio. Students have a choice of single or twin room shared with another student of the same gender.

All shared properties are located in the Docklands area within Zone 2 of the London transport network.

Hotels Many Summer Study Abroad students choose to stay in a hotel within easy reach of their College and the attractions of central London. They are also a popular choice among family and friends coming to visit students during their time in London. The Study Abroad team can provide advice on suitable locations.

UAL halls of residence Accommodation is guaranteed at a hall of residence (dorms or apartment) if you apply for a place by our deadline. University of the Arts London provides high-quality self-catering accommodation in halls of residence across the capital. Almost all rooms have their own shower and toilet and share a kitchen.

Our students tell us they feel very safe at the University, and your safety is our top priority. As a result, all our halls of residence have:

– Closed-circuit television (CCTV) inside and outside the building – Secure entry, for example by fob or card – Staff available and contactable 24 hours a day

Costume StoreThe Costume Store is a development in west London, opposite North Acton underground station (Central Line), accommodating students in 654 single, en-suite rooms in flats and 76 large self-contained studios.

The Costume Store has the following facilities:

Summer Study AbroadIn addition to The Costume Store and Will Wyatt Court, students joining a Summer Study Abroad course can apply to the following three UAL halls of residence: –Cordwainers Court–Don Gratton House–Sketch House

The Social ProgrammeThe Social Programme is entirely run by students, for students, and offers a year-round programme of social events, campaigns and community projects. See page 31 for details.

Will Wyatt CourtLocated between vibrant East London and the cultural highlights of the West End, students at Will Wyatt Court enjoy the atmosphere and accessibility of a central London location. This purpose-built, high-quality student accommodation is situated close to Old Street underground station in Zone 1. There are 514 single rooms, each with en-suite facilities, internet and phone connection. Flats are shared by up to eight residents and have well-equipped kitchen and lounge areas.

Will Wyatt Court also offers the following features:

Across UALEvents The University hosts a diverse schedule of events throughout the year; from summer degree shows and various exhibitions across a range of subject areas, to seminars and workshops.

SupportThe Student Services team offers professional, confidential, and free advice to UAL students. The team can help if you have practical or personal concerns while you are in London. Amongst their many services, they provide support for people with disabilities, a counselling service, health advice and a chaplaincy service.

Students’ UnionAs a Study Abroad student, you will automatically become a member of SU Arts: University of the Arts London Students’ Union. SU Arts runs student bars, organises social events and parties, runs sports clubs and societies, and provides representation for students. Joining in can be a great way to make new friends. They can also provide you with details of the latest student discounts!

The Social ProgrammeUAL hosts an award-winning social programme that runs events in every hall throughout the year. The events are organised by Social Reps – fellow students who live in halls with you. They organise a wide range of activities, from movie nights and study sessions to secret tours of London. You can also go on discounted trips around Europe to visit galleries and museums, and experience a different culture.

UAL Social organise competitions and discounted nights out to some of London’s best nightclubs, as well as food festivals, craft nights and fancy dress parties.

There are regular cross-halls events and parties giving you opportunities to meet people from across UAL – all events are free or very low-cost, so everybody can take part.

Student life Your Study Abroad experience


Exclusively for Study Abroad students Welcome Days and Social EventsStudents arriving from outside the EU in September and January can book a free airport collection service to take them to their accommodation.

And to help you settle in, we organise a fun and informative welcome programme to introduce you to College life and London, as well as key personnel and services. Many of you tell us it helps to meet other students ‘in the same boat’.

Study Abroad tripsA number of our programmes offer the opportunity to join guided study trips to Continental Europe. At LCF, the Paris trip is an integral part of all Study Abroad programmes and is included in the tuition fee. Students on the Free Elective Semester Programme at CSM have the option to join a trip to Amsterdam towards the end of their stay. At Chelsea, the European Art History module, which includes a tutor-led study trip to Berlin, is a mandatory part of the semester programme. This module is also open to students on an integrated programme at any UAL College or available as a Summer Study Abroad course. Students joining Chelsea’s Summer Study Abroad course – European Interior Design: London & Milan – will go on a four-day study trip to Milan as part of their programme.

Studying abroad is an exciting time, and we want you to have the best possible experience at UAL. The University offers an array of events and support services to help you settle in, make connections and become part of the wider UAL community. And with London waiting to be discovered, you’ll never run out of things to see and do. What’s more, UAL’s dedicated Study Abroad team is on hand to provide day-to-day support, guidance and advice throughout your time here.


Teaching and credit transferTeaching at UAL Teaching at all the Colleges is practice-based, and is delivered in a variety of ways, including individual and group tutorials, projects, industry briefs, seminars, lectures, and museum, gallery and studio visits. Feedback on studio-based project work takes place through discussion with your fellow students as well as tutors, while some courses make use of more formal written work.

Integrated students will find we place a strong emphasis on individual autonomy. You will spend much of your time independent of teaching staff. You will not usually find ‘classes’ as you know them but instead, you will be given the support you need to direct your own study, take creative risks and develop confidence. You will take between two and six mandatory units while you are here, depending on which course you choose and how long you stay.

Semester courses provide a structured learning experience and students receive extensive support during their studies, meeting regularly with the specialist staff responsible for their course. At Central Saint Martins, students enrol onto a minimum of two mandatory modules, and choose from a range of electives to suit their study needs. Students at Chelsea take a minimum of three mandatory modules and choose one of two pathways in line with their interests. At London College of Fashion, students apply to one of three pathways made up of a combination of mandatory and elective modules.

Semester programmes all provide the opportunity to join a guided European study trip.

Whichever programme you choose, our faculty (or ‘teaching staff’ or ‘tutors’ as they are called in the UK) are also practising artists, designers and communications professionals in their specialist fields. The quality of their teaching has been officially recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency, the UK’s quality watchdog for Higher Education.

Your advisers may ask to see a copy of the course handbook, which describes the academic content and structure of the courses. These are not currently available online but we can email one to you if you ask us to.

UAL also uses virtual learning environments, as well as other technologies, to provide resources, information and communication tools.

The credit system at UAL All BA degree courses at University of the Arts London are credit rated. You are awarded credit points when learning is successfully assessed and you have completed a learning unit. The smallest units in the scheme have 20 credit points and each individual credit point normally equates to 10 hours of learning. Learning occurs in three ways: there is taught or tutor-directed learning, learning through access to School and College facilities, and self-directed study and learning time.

Assessed work includes project work, preparatory materials, your log and written assignments, and other work as appropriate. 120 credits are available for each year of study (generally 40 credits per term), and in order to gain an honours degree, 360 credits must be obtained in total.

Record of study At the end of your time here, we will provide you with a record of study and achievement, which gives details of the units you have studied with the number of credits, and your UAL letter grades.

Financial aidAll six Colleges of University of the Arts London are Title IV registered. Eligible students who are enrolled on a Study Abroad programme here can continue to take out financial aid via their home institution. However, Study Abroad students are not eligible to receive US Federal or private loans through our institution. Should you wish to take out a US loan, please contact the Financial Aid team at your home institution. UAL is able to enter into a consortium agreement and this should be arranged via your home institution. Contact [email protected] with further questions.

UAL Scholarships(exclusively for Study Abroadstudents)UAL Award for Study AbroadUniversity of the Arts London makes four awards of £1,500 each academic year, to support Study Abroad students with their applications to our Colleges. UAL Study Abroad Awards are given to outstanding students who have been accepted onto a Study Abroad programme at UAL.

Candidates will be required to submit a blog post of 250 words and five photos or a one-minute video, introducing their home institution to a UAL student who is going to Study Abroad there. We expect award holders to have the potential to make an exceptional contribution to the worlds of art, design, fashion, media, communication or performance.

External ScholarshipsThe Benjamin A Gilman International Scholarship Program The Gilman Scholarship Program offers awards for undergraduate Study Abroad and was established by the International Academic Opportunity Act of 2000. This scholarship provides awards for US citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study or intern programmes worldwide.

BUTEX (British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association)

BUTEX awards a number of scholarships to students studying abroad for either a semester or for a whole academic year. The value of each scholarship is £500.

Applicants for the scholarship can either produce a picture or poster promoting Study Abroad, or submit an essay application responding to a question set by BUTEX.

The application deadline for students planning to Study Abroad in the 2017/18 academic year is 15 June 2017.

5Determine eligibilityYou need to have completed at least one year of undergraduate-level study.Your grade point average (GPA) should be 3.0 or above with the following exceptions:

– 2.8 GPA or above for eight-week summer schools at London College of Fashion (LCF)

– no GPA requirement for five-week summer schools at LCF

If teaching is not delivered in English at your home institution, you will need to have an IELTS score of 6.0 or above, with some courses requiring 6.5, 7.0 or 7.5

The IELTS requirements for London College of Fashion are 5.0 for Fashion Design, Fashion Media and Communication, Styling or Footwear pathways, and 6.0 for Fashion Business Pathways. At this stage you must also ensure that your home institution will recognise your studies in London. Please contact us if you need a copy of the course handbook which contains detailed descriptions of the academic content and structure of each course.

7Prepare and submit supporting evidenceAll our courses require some sort of supporting evidence, for example a portfolio, showreel or piece of written work. This should be submitted via a file-sharing site or as an attachment to your application. Please do not send original work.

Art, Design, Fashion: a portfolio of 20-25 images. The work you include should show breadth, and demonstrate your creative thinking and personal research, progressing through stages to a finished piece.

Additional info for applicants to Fashion at CSM:

You should demonstrate your fashion research and creative process skills; sketchbook imagery which shows the origin of ideas displayed in your portfolio; and the progression through design stages to a finished piece.

Acting and Directing: a recent performance in which you have taken a significant role.

Film and TV: extracts of your film projects, with a short written film analysis.

Sound Art: examples of your original sound work.

All other courses: three pieces of written work appropriate to the specialist area.
