Termination of FGM ---NARRATIVE REPORT April 2014- March 201

    Intro!"ction

The year started with a full plate of activities that run throughout the year. The major activities

were the fgm education program of seminars to boys and girls as well as to adult groups on the

reality and consequences that FGM brings to the entire society. We are happy to announce that

requests for fgm seminars increased tremendously this year as a result of which the project has

moved to Kericho iosece! this to us is a sign that the impact of our efforts is felt in the

community. The facilitators in the field! directed by r. "r. #phigenia did e$cellent wor% to meet

these requests. The second &'("# of the project! i.e the construction of )(bundant *ife +entre,

is also progressing well -"ee photos.#eminar$%

/nstitutions and organi0ed groups continue to request for fgm seminars in their areas. Many such

seminars were held in 1a%uru! 1gong and Kericho ioceses with two new areas of Mau 1aro%

and 2omet. The seminars were as usual given to local leaders li%e the chiefs! church and village

elders! pupils and students of primary and secondary schools both boys and girls. (t the close of

the seminars participants are always dismayed by what they learn about FGM. The 3ideos that

are show are particularly effective in bringing the reality of FGM to the audience. We have seen

big men weep and leave the room where the 3 is being shown before the show is over. Many

of these people become our best ambassadors on the ground.

"eminars to students will &OME INTO effective in the ne$t generation when these children do

not ta%e their children for fgm. /n the meantime! we shall wor% for cooperation between the

adults we teach! the administrators! the media and especially the churches.

We also loo%ing forward to the completion of the (bundant *ife +entre so as to reduce

operational costs for much of our training needs and to train especially infl"ential a!"lt$ from

    Recommen!ation$

    • There is need to spread our wings to cover larger areas of Kenya where FGM is rampant.

/t means need for more facilitators and more resources. (bundant *ife +entre will assist

    very much in this.

    • There is need of research on the changing shapes of FGM used by proponents of FGM.

This will help identify the methodology that can be used to address this issue.

    • There is deed for application of new technology.

    • More finance is needed to give more intensive and longer duration adult seminars

    • More facilitators to be traine;d so as to move into the more remote parts of the country.

    • There is need of ministering to spiritual and psychological of FGM survivors and their

    families.

    • We have learnt that some tribes will end fgm only when the whole clan accepts. This will

need new strategies of manyatta by manyatta approach. This will be slow but hopefully

efficient in the long run. (n individual will is ostraci0ed if he changes alone.

    Way forward:

Abundant Life Centre: For Kenya and Africa:

/t was projected that the first phase of (bundance *ife +entre would be complete by February

675@ and be operational by May 675@. 3arious factors forced the board to change contractorsand this slowed down the construction. Few wee%s ago! the construction has ta%en momentum

and roofing is underway. This will allow other interior functions to run concurrently hopefully

much faster to allow it to be operational the soonest possible.

The management board hopes to introduce income generating activities that will supplement the

running costs of the centre as well as push the centre towards its financial selfAsustainability.
