Help students recognize the connection between this learned behavior and other learned behaviors in our lives, including the learned behavior we are studying Communication Assist the students to make the connection that these differences in Learned Communication Styles significantly affects the Communication Process and Effective communication. Begin the process of stimulating students to realize that their own learned way of communicating is NOT the one and only correct way to communicate. Slide 12 Men Learned how to use the urinals in the mens bathroom they dont really remember how, why or when. But deep down we all know it is all because: MAMA SAID! Slide 13 How many other things have we accepted as natural in our lives which are not natural actions but LEARNED actions? Is How we Communicate one of those? Think About It. Slide 14 Neither way is right! Neither way is wrong! Each is just the way that group learned to go to the bathroom. Be careful when you criticize others when they do things differently than you do them. Be Very Careful of Judging them. Be ESPECIALLY Careful when it comes to Communication Styles and Rituals. Different cultures have different ways just because they are different doesnt mean they are wrong, just different. Just because we do things our way, doesnt mean our way is right. Is there Really always just ONE way to do things? Slide 15 Go ahead and laugh, ladies. You have a very similar example of a Learned Action. Be sure to listen to that lecture, FEMAL BATHROOM ETIQUETTE. BUT, please remember the purpose here is NOT to explain male or female bathroom etiquette. My purpose is to lead you into considering that there are many aspects of our lives that are not really natural to us, but are actually learned behaviors. My concern is that we then use this idea and apply it to different LEARNED communication styles and how the affect communication between different groups, including men and women. jwf
