Nanjing is the capital of Jiangsu province in eastern China and has a prominent place in Chinese

history and culture, having been the capital of China on several occasions. Its present name

means "Southern Capital" and was widely romanized as Nankin and Nanking until

the pinyin language reform, after which Nanjing was gradually adopted as

the standard spelling of the city's name in most languages that use

the Roman alphabet.

Lies on the south bank of the Yangtze River, Nanjing, the capital of

Jiangsu Province, is one of the most delightful destinations in China.

Known as the capital city of six or ten dynasties in ancient Chinese history, it has

a brilliant cultural heritage.

Modern Metropolis

Like most major cities in

the country, Nanjing is

developing rapidly. Great

changes have taken place

in the city. Modern

highways and railways

connect the city with

most major cities

throughout the country

and it is becoming a

sparkling metropolis akin

to Shanghai and Beijing

with skyscrapers, luxury

hotels, fashion shopping

malls, supermarkets and

highly-developed

economic zones

throughout the city.

Transport in the city is

very convenient with the

new metro service in

addition to taxis, public

buses, tourist special lines and other means of transport. Modern amenities in luxury hotels

make your stay a comfortable one. Dazzling shopping malls and department stores can be found

in the commercial areas of the city with stocked plenty of international brand names. The city is

also home to several colleges and universities and a large foreign population. The city is become

an international metropolis with new faces every day.

Transportation

Nanjing is the transportation hub in eastern China and the downstream Yangtze River area.

Different means of transportation constitute a three-dimensional transport system that includes

land, water and air. As in most other Chinese cities, public transportation is the dominant mode

of travel of the majority of the citizens. The city now has four bridge or tunnel crossings spanning

the Yangtze, which are tying districts north of the river with the city centre on the south bank.

Air

Nanjing Lukou International Airport is the “Gate” of Jiangsu Province, the third largest airport in

eastern China and one of main air hubs in the country. Currently, it operates over 130 air routes

to 54 domestic destinations and more than 20 international destinations. For passengers’

convenience, there are not only shuttle buses running between the airport and downtown area,

but also buses between the airport and nearby cities like Huai’an, Yangzhong, and Shuyang, etc.

Nanjing Flights

Train

Nanjing is an important meeting point of the country’s north-south and east-west railway trunks,

which connects northern, eastern and middle regions of the country. The passenger

transportation is handled at two railway stations: Nanjing Railway Station is operating regular and

partial high-speed trains and South Railway Station is operating high-speed trains.

Nanjing Train Schedule

Long-distance Bus

Centering on Nanjing, highways radiate to Shanghai, Huai’an, Hefei, Hangzhou and Nantong, etc,

which makes long-distance travel by bus very convenient in the area. At present, there are eight

main long-distance bus stations in Nanjing, operating buses to Shanghai, Beijing, Qingdao,

Hangzhou, Guangzhou and Yiwu, etc.

Subway

With its subway line 1 put into service in 2005, Nanjing became the 6th city in mainland China

having subway lines. Presently, the city’s subway mileage open to traffic is 85 kilometers (about

53 miles), consisting of line 1, line 2 and their extensions. By the end of 2014, the total length will

reach 240 kilometers (about 149 miles). By 2030, there will be 17 lines servicing the citizens.

Attractions

Nanjing has been the capital of several Chinese imperial dynasties. It has a variety of historical

and cultural heritage evident in its architecture like imperial mausoleums, old temples,

traditional garden buildings, and museums.

The Purple Mountain (Zijin Shan or literally Purple-God Mountain) Area covers half of the

attractions in this city's suburbs. It dominates the

northeastern skyline of the city. Some of the famous

attractions found in this area include the father of

China's great revolution Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum,

Xiaoling Mausoleum of the first Ming emperor, Zhu

Yuanzhang, and the temple of antiquity.

To the east of Dr. Sun Yat-sen's Mausoleum is the

well-known Linggu Temple. Built about 1,500 years

ago, Linggu Temple surrounded by aged but still

flourishing trees is claimed to be the best Buddhist

temple in the world. Also, Purple

Mountain Observatory and the planetarium on the

mountainside are famous attractions for science

gurus. Another place of interest in this area is the so-

called Plum Garden where the annual plum festival in

the city is held.

If one goes westward of the Purple Mountain area, another picturesque mountain called Mount

Qixia (pronounced as Kitsya) can be found. It is a popular destination for the locals in the area

especially during spring and autumn.

Found on the west side of the mountain (southeast of Nanjing Railway Station), is the

scenic Xuanwu Lake. The Xuanwu Lake is a former imperial navy training and recreation center

accessed only by extravagant aristocrats. Fishing game and boating are some of the recreational

activities in this area. Xuanwu Lake is a

must for your itinerary in this city because

the clustered sights are quite convenient

for visitors to see for a day.

One of the must-see places in the city

would be the area around the Qinhuai

River, which falls on the southern end of

the walled city. During the old days, this

riverside region had a bustling nightlife

where extravagant nobles, talents and

businessmen flock to the restaurants,

dance halls and whorehouses in this area.

In Chinese literature, it is famed as a place

for beauty queens and romance. Qinhuai River

Confucius Temple

Nowadays, Gongyuan Street (the

modern name of the riverside street)

has once again taken on the looks of

an ancient shopping area and is fast

becoming a busy scenic spot in the city.

Antique temples, shopping centers,

and restaurants surround Gongyuan

Street. This is a very beautiful area

because the landscape blends with the

cityscape. Other attractions in this area

include Confucius Temple (Fuzimiao),

Gong Yuan (palaces for people to take

part in the imperial examinations),

Ming walls, Zhonghua

Gate and Zhanyuan Garden. This area is reputed as the Luminous Pear of Jinling (former name of

Nanjing) for its fantastic night scene. We highly recommend you to visit this area in the evening at

around 7:00 p.m.

If one goes southward of the city area, crossing the South Railway Station, Yu Hua Tai - a favorite

place for Chinese patriots will be found. The historical park of Yu Hua Tai houses a monument

built to commemorate the seventy-two Chinese martyrs. If you will be more curious about

historical records, we recommend you to visit the Museum halls, which contain these pertinent

documents. The Yuhuashi (Rain Flower Pebbles) Art Festival (annual) is held here.

In the eastern part outside of Nanjing along the upper part of the Qinhuai River (the river that

crosses the city from northwest to the south) is Mochou Lake Park. Near the lake is The Memorial

Hall to the Victims in the Nanjing Massacre. The memorial hall contains documents and pictures

of Chinese people under the atrocities of Japanese soldiers during World War II. Time spent on

visiting this memorial hall will depend

on how much you want to learn about

the history of the local people under

the Japanese regime.

Besides, Nanjing Museum holding a

collection of some 2,000 first class

treasures of national and cultural

interest, theXuyuan Garden, a

relatively small exquisite southern

China gardening style garden and

the Yangtze River Bridge are also highly

recommended attractions of the city.

The shopping area near Xinjiekou, the

street near Hunan Lu and Shanxi Lu Zhanyuan Garden

Square, is a must for night owls. This is a commercial area and has a varied and bustling nightlife.

Dining--What to Eat

Duck Blood Soup

The name of this dish may sound odd

to foreigners who might wonder how

the blood and soup is combined.

Actually Chinese people do eat the

blood of duck, goose and chicken but

in a unique way. They collect the

blood of a freshly killed duck or goose

and stir, then seal and refrigerate until

ready to use. The result is blood cakes.

The soup is seasoned with salt, pepper,

and subtly spicy undertones. Simmer

gently for several minutes and serve

with eggs, noodles and caraway. This food is the top of all travelers' recommendations.

Gan Si (Shredded Bean-curd Sheets)

A refreshing cold dish made of Bean-curd sheets. The bean-curd sheets are cut finely into threads

with seasoning of sauce, sesame oil and vegetables shreds of bamboo root, mushroom, chicken

or meat. It has fine shreds and a tender taste. It can also be boiled in broth and served with other

meat shreds.

Pressed Duck

A legend goes that in China's Southern Dynasties (420

- 589) an emperor was besieged by enemies in the

imperial city. Soldiers guarded the city and fought

hard in bloody battles. Women made salted ducks

and wrapped them with leaves to preserve the flavor.

Ducks were packed into a large jar and delivered to

the soldiers. When the soldiers unwrapped the ducks,

they found the ducks pressed flat, thereby the name Pressed Duck.

The difference between Salted Soup and Pressed Duck is the taste. The duck meat of the first

style tastes fresh and tender while the latter tastes tight and pliable. Therefore, if you buy the

Salted Soup Duck, choose the one most recently prepared.

Dou Fu Nao (Tofu pudding)

This is a great breakfast-time soup dish made from tofu

(bean curd), mushrooms, coriander and chilli. The best

place to taste it is Liu Feng Ju.

Fried Spring Onion Pancake

This is a kind of fried pastry that is filled with shallot, meat

and other ingredients and usually covered with a pastry

crust. It is also a popular breakfast snack. The best place to

taste it is Liu Feng Ju

Salted Soup Duck

Autumn in Nanjing is a season of scented osmanthus blossom and the best time to make the

delicious Salted Soup Duck because ducks at this time are fat. The chef chooses well-bred ducks

and smears salt and spice on them to add flavors. The spice ingredients are a secret. Then the

spiced ducks are marinated in a sauce for two hours. Just before eating, the ducks are steamed. It

should taste fragrant, crisp and tender. The best restaurant to taste it is Jinling Restaurant near

Xinjiekou.

Nanjing 1912 - a place where the

youth could have a vibrant nightlife

Where is the liveliest place in Nanjing

after 10 p.m.? The local fashion elites

would reply, "Nanjing 1912." It refers

to an entertaining area in present

Nanjing. One could see the

Presidential Hall in this area where Dr.

Sun Yet-sen, the forerunner of China's

democratic revolution, had his

presidential office erected in the year

1912. Seventeen well-preserved

historical buildings from that period

and four entertainment squares can be

found in this area in today's Nanjing.

Nanjing Sports Park

The Nanjing Sports Park is one of the largest athletic venue projects ever completed in Asia. The

main facilities include a 60,000 seat stadium, 11,000 seat arena, natatorium, tennis center and

media centre. It was completed in 2005, by the Jiangsu Government for the 10th China National

Games – the biggest single sporting event held in China. The challenge was to create an iconic

development for the Games that would also leave a legacy; a “People’s Place, and a dynamic

destination point. The further challenge of a green field site meant an architecturally strong

precinct was required, to reflect the historical and cultural significance of Nanjing but it must also

become an integrated and harmonious part of the development of the city. It would also provide

the highest level of public amenities and activity, so that people wanted to go there, twenty four

hours a day.
