The 9th-10th Commandmentspages 103-108

1. Write the Ninth or the Tenth Commandment. The Ninth Commandment.

You shall not covet your neighbor's house. What does this mean?

We should fear and love God that we do not scheme to getour neighbor's inheritance or house, or obtain it by a showof right, but do all we can to help him keep it.

The Tenth CommandmentYou shall not covet your neighbor's wife, workers, animals,or anything that belongs to your neighbor.

What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do not force or enticeaway our neighbor's spouse, workers or animals, but urgethem to stay and do their duty.

2. What is coveting?

1 Kings 21:1-16 [Ahab and Jezebel conspired to get Naboth’s vineyard even after Naboth had said, “no.”]Joshua 7:1-21 [Aachan had a sinful desire for the spoils of war that were supposed to be given to God.]Matthew 14:3-4 [King Herod had taken his brother’s wife.]2 Samuel 11:2-4 [David wanted Bathsheba even after he was told she was Uriah’s wife.]

Coveting is a sinful desire for something God does not want us to have.

3. What is God forbidding when he says “obtain it by a show of right”?

Micah 2:1-2 Woe to those who plan iniquity, to those who plot evil on their beds! At morning’s light they carry it outbecause it is in their power to do it. They covet fields and seize them, and houses, and take them. They defraud peopleof their homes, they rob them of their inheritance.Luke 20:46-47 “Beware of the teachers of the law. They like to walk around in flowing robes and love to be greetedwith respect in the marketplaces and have the most important seats in the synagogues and the places of honor atbanquets. They devour widows’ houses and for a show make lengthy prayers. These men will be punished mostseverely.”

God says that even if something is technically legal, but morally wrong, it’s still a sin.

4. Why do we have two commands about coveting?

James 4:1 What causes fights and quarrels among you? Don’t they come from your desires that battle within you?Mark 7:21–22 For it is from within, out of a person’s heart, that evil thoughts come—sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, greed, malice, deceit, lewdness, envy, slander, arrogance and folly.

Coveting is a subtle sin. Noone can tell if we’re coveting except us and God. Coveting poisons our own hearts andleads to other sins.

5. Passage - How might coveting lead to other sins?

1 Timothy 6:10 For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wanderedfrom the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs.James 1:14–15 but each person is tempted when they are dragged away by their own evil desire and enticed. Then, after desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, gives birth to death.Genesis 3:6 When the woman saw that the fruit of the tree was good for food and pleasing to the eye, and alsodesirable for gaining wisdom, she took some and ate it. She also gave some to her husband, who was with her, and heate it.2 Samuel 11:1-17 [David’s sin of coveting Uriah’s wife led to adultery and murder.]

Sinful thoughts lead to sinful actions. When our sinful thoughts are in control, they lead us into sinful actions.

6. Passage - What does God want for us instead of coveting?

1 Timothy 6:6–7 But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we cantake nothing out of it.Proverbs 3:5–6 Trust in the LORD with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; in all your wayssubmit to him, and he will make your paths straight.Psalm 145:15–16 The eyes of all look to you, and you give them their food at the proper time. You open your handand satisfy the desires of every living thing.Ecclesiastes 2:24 A person can do nothing better than to eat and drink and find satisfaction in their own toil. Thistoo, I see, is from the hand of God.

God wants us to be content with his gifts and to trust him for everything.

7. How do the ninth and tenth commandments serve as a guide for us?

Luke 12:15 Then he said to them, “Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in anabundance of possessions.”1 Timothy 6:8 But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that.Hebrews 13:5 Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said,“Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”a. God wants to watch out for all kinds of greed and to be content.

Genesis 13:1-12 [Abraham unselfishly allowed Lot to choose the best land for himself.]Colossians 3:5 Put to death, therefore, whatever belongs to your earthly nature: sexual immorality, impurity, lust, evil desires and greed, which is idolatry.Philippians 2:4 not looking to your own interests but each of you to the interests of the others.

b. God wants us to be concerned for others.

8. Write one of the even numbered commandments.

The Second Commandment. You shall not misuse the name of the Lord your God.

What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do not use His name tocurse, swear, lie or deceive, or use witchcraft, but call uponGod's name in every trouble, pray, praise and give thanks.

The Fourth Commandment.Honor your father and mother, that it may go well with you

and that you may enjoy long life on the earth. What does this mean?

We should fear and love God that we do not dishonor or angerour parents and others in authority, but honor, serve and obeythem, and give them love and respect.

The Sixth Commandment. You shall not commit adultery. What does this mean?

We should fear and love God that we lead a pure and decentlife in words and actions, and that husband and wife love andhonor each other.

The Eighth Commandment. You shall not give false testimony against your neighbor.

What does this mean?We should fear and love God that we do not tell lies aboutour neighbor, betray him or give him a bad name, butdefend him, speak well of him and take his words andactions in the kindest possible way.
