Members of Helsby Golf Club enjoyed a super evening – anda lovely Chinese Banquet – at the Fortune Palace inDelamere on Sunday evening.

The star guest was Ethan Smith (age 6) – along with his mumAndrea and dad Nicholas – who was presented with his ownpowered wheelchair by Alan Lee on behalf of the Helsby GolfClub Powered Wheelchair Appeal.

Ethan attends Greenlees School in Wallasey and he lovesanimals especially horses, zebras and rats! (He has 2 pet ratscalled Harvey and Maisie.) Ethan likes playing out but hasbeen limited so was looking forward to his new chair whichwill give him independence. He has 2 sisters Brook aged 4and Faith aged 1. He was accompanied by his mum Andreaand dad Nicholas.

BLACK & WHITE EVENING 3rd December 2011



A very enjoyable evening was had by all – super food, excellent disco, fun quiz & raffle with great prizes – and two poweredwheelchairs were presented to Robyn Jarvis and Tabitha Salmon.

Tabitha, aged 12 from Ellesmere Port, was accompanied by her Mum, Sarah and her brother, Sebastian when she waspresented with her powered chair by the President, the Captain and the Ladies’ Captain.

Robyn, aged 9 from Great Sutton, was presented with a special lightweight manual wheelchair. She attended the eveningwith her Mum Leanne, Nan Pam, Auntie Jane and friend Julie. Robyn gave a lovely thank you speech after which shepresented a cheque for £640 to the Wheelchair Appeal. She had raised the funds by having a cake sale at school and hadcompleted a sponsored walk with her family from Great Sutton to Chester AND BACK! in her wheelchair. Robyn is a verygenerous young lady who has asked that her old wheelchair, which she has really looked after, be given to another little girlwith special needs. Many thanks and congratulations to Robyn.

Supporters of the Powered Wheelchair Appeal spent last Saturday (9th April 2011) packing shopping bags for customers atthe Tesco Store in Helsby.

Sheila Fenwick and Karen Fozard led the 3 teams of volunteers who raised £605.10p for the Appeal.

One very kind lady also offered to donate her brand new powered scooter to the Appeal and a local businessman asked formore details of the Charity as he is interested in supporting the Appeal.

The committee would like to thank the Captain, Bert Dyson and the volunteers below who worked very hard on the day andall the supporters who put money in the buckets.

SPRING DANCE 16th April 2011

A very enjoyable time was had by all who attended the 2011 PWA Spring Dance.

At the start of the evening, three more powered wheelchairs were presented to the following children:-Declan Price aged 7 from Runcorn, who attended with his Mum Laura, her partner Phil , his brother Callum, aged 3, andboth sets of grandparents. Declan loves the comic cartoon characters Spiderman, Mr Fantastic and Ben 10. His new chairwill give him more independence and enable him to play more sport at Chesnut Lodge School where he takes part in tabletennis, Bocchia and is learning to play wheelchair football.Taylor Roberts aged 14 attended with his adopted mum Honor Harvey. He attends Meadowside School in Birkenhead. Helikes using his computer and his favourite is Postman Pat. His new chair will give him more independence and help him leadhis already busy life of going to swimming club on Tuesdays, horse riding on Wednesdays, Boys Brigade on Fridays andSunday School on Sundays.Ariella Byrne was supposed to receive her new chair but has gone to USA for an operation which will help prevent hercondition from getting any worse. The funds for her operation were raised by the Cauldwell Children’s Charity. She willreceive her chair at the Wheelchair Classic.

The evening was also attended by Tayler Farr and her parents. Tayler received her wheelchair at the Black & White Nightlast December. She came to say ‘thank you’ to everyone. She enjoyed herself immensely dancing to the disco with the otherladies and a very enjoyable time was had by all.

The 29th Wheelchair Classic was held at Helsby Golf Club on Thursday 9th June 2011.

184 players competed in the golf competition and a great day was had by all.

In the evening, 5 youngsters from the North West were presented with their Powered Chairs by the Captain, the Presidentand the Ladies’ Captain. They were joined by two club members, Roddy Snedden and Steve Johnson, who represented theMerseyside Electrical Trades Association which had raised £6,500 for the Appeal over the last 3 years and who presented aspecial chair to Megan Sanderson from Sandbach. Ariella Byrne received her scooter and James Dunn, David Clayton andJacob Cannell received their chairs. This brings the total number of chairs presented in the last 28 years to 288.

There then followed the presentation of the trophies to the competition winners by the Captains.

The winners of the men’s competition were Brian West and Doug Tate and the runners up were Dave (Digger) Fletcher andGeoff Marsden.

The winners of the Ladies Competition were Linda Malkin and Dami Diamond and the runners up were Janet Richards andVal Pritchard.

Franc Cunniffe and his sidekick Steve (Cunniffe) held a very lively auction to raise further funds for the Appeal.

The day raised in excess of £16,500 which all goes towards the provision of Powered Wheelchairs for children with specialneeds. The committee would like to thank all the supporters, many of whom very generously donated a tremendous array ofprizes for the competition, the auction and the raffle and who made it such a great day.

At this year’s event, Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal celebrated smashingitsr £1m landmark fundraising target exactly 28 years after the appeal began.

Representatives of the appeal presented their 288th wheelchair to a teenager fromSandbach.

Megan Sanderson, 13, suffers from a rare disability which makes it difficult for her to sit upin a normal wheelchair and she was presented with a specially made powered wheelchairto allow her to enjoy life with more independence and greater mobility.

During the annual event, where 184 players competed for trophies and prizes in amassive golf tournament, four other children from Bebington, Warrington, Liverpool and Denton were also presented withtheir tailor-made wheelchairs.

This year’s MEGA Day didn’t enjoy the best of weather for the golf but it still managed to provide a lot of fun andentertainment.

Most importantly we saw two powered wheelchairs presented to two more children.

Mark Jones, aged 14, from Upton by Chester is very keen on all sports. He enjoys watching golf and has his own set ofclubs. He is also a Liverpool fan. He is a volunteer worker for a charity called Spin, for which he has won awards.

Will Jenaid, aged 13, attends Chesnut Lodge School, Widnes. He plays wheelchair football for Everton but supportsManchester United. He is another young man who is benefiting from the after school sports club organised by MarkEccleston, the paralympian who teaches at Chesnut Lodge.

The golf competition was won by Alan Jarvis, Martin Mann, Phil Davies and entertainer Danny Roman.

In second place were Steve Johnson, Roddy Sneddon, Jeff Hughes and entertainer Billy Myers.

In the evening, we all enjoyed the brilliant entertainment laid on by the MEGA folks with a superb mix of song and comedyprovided by Joe Wall, Ged Ryan (Dr Beat), Hal Nolan and Larry White.

Thanks to everyone who helped make this another success for the Powered Wheelchair Appeal with more than £1,000raised.

Congratulations and many thanks to Keith O’Neil who has raised about £1,500 for theAppeal.

Keith O’Neil, a past member at Helsby who now plays at Sandiway, competed in theGreat North Run in September on behalf of the Powered Wheelchair Appeal. He wassuccessful in achieving his wish to complete the course in less than 2 hours whichbettered his time of last year.

Charity Bag Packing in aid of the Powered Wheelchair Appeal

Supporters of the Powered Wheelchair Appeal spent Saturday 5th November 2011 packing shopping bags for customers atthe M&S Simply Food Store at the Coliseum, Cheshire Oaks.

A total of £504.16 was raised for the Appeal

The committee would like to thank Bert Dyson and the volunteers below who worked very hard on the day and all thesupporters who put money in the buckets.

HELSBY PWA WINS 2011 YOUR CHAMPIONSAWARD

Nov 2011FOR the 24th year in a row, the Trinity Mirror/ScottishPower Your Champions gala awards night has honoured the unsungheroes and heroines of the community.

This year’s glittering ceremony took place on Friday night at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Chester and guest of honour wasOlympic gold medallist Tessa Sanderson.

The biggest award of the night, for the Champion of Champions, went to the Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appealwhich has raised more than £1m to provide powered wheelchairs for hundreds of children with disabilities.

The event concluded with a specially made film* about the work of the Helsby Golf Club Powered Wheelchair Appeal whichwas screened before appeal officials Bert Dyson MBE and Penny Ainsworth were greeted with a standing ovation as theymade their way to the stage to collect their Champion of Champions award.
