NabothChandiringastartedcarvingstoneasahobbywhileworkingforaTextileCompanyinChitungwiza,outsideHararein1989.Hesaidaftercarvingfor2yearsherealisedhewantedtosculptfull-time,andhadboththetalentandpassiontomakeithislife’swork.
“MyinspirationwasstirredbyartistslikeJoramMarigaandMaxwellChidora,andIreceivedconsiderabletuitionfromMarigasincewestayedinthesamearea”.
NabothalsohadthebenefitofaformalarttrainingatthePatersonArtCentreinHarare,andoncehehaddecidedtosculptfulltime,hereturnedtohishometownofNyangawheresomeofthemostbeautifulstonesinZimbabwearelocated.
Naboth’sdistinctivesculpturesinBlackSerpentine,oftenofmythicalbirdformshavefoundahomeingalleriesintheUnitedStates,CanadaandEurope,andseveralofhispiecesareinthepermanentcollectionoftheNationalGalleryofZimbabweinMutare.
ThedenseblackstoneandglisteningsheenthatissocharacteristicofBlackSerpentine,whichissourcedintheNyangaMountains,isNabothChandiringa’spreferredmedium.Shonamythology,biblicalstoriesandthebeautyofthemountainsencirclinghishomeiswhatinspiresNaboth.HisstylefusesthespiritualityofFirstgenerationsculptorsandthemorecontemporaryapproachtosculptingembracedbyThirdGenerationartists.
