a member’sthoughts

“If you want to be happy, set a goal that commands your thoughts, liberates your energy, and inspires your hopes.” Andrew Carnegie

I reflect back on my reasons for joining the NEC Chamber and the journey we’ve taken together so far. I began 2007 writing down my goals for the year in many categories and as I look back over those goals today…most of the categories, (family, spiritual, health) I could pretty much cover on my own…it just takes a little self-motivation and inspiration from others. However, my business and career goals were big and I realized that I needed to get out of my comfort zone to accomplish them.

A good friend of mine who had experi-enced great results for her business with the Chamber asked me to take a look… so I did and I joined right away. The Chamber has been significant in growing my busi-ness… but that’s not even the best part. I’ve met some really great people, gained friendships, & connected with other busi-nesses that provide awesome service. If you are looking to make a change, to network and meet new people, to grow personally and professionally…the NEC chamber is the place for you!

If you are stuck in life, in your business or career… ask yourself what you are truly passionate about? Where are you going to be in five years? Really think about that… and if you keep doing what you are doing today, are you going to be happy,

healthy, financially strapped or financially free? Those are some of the questions that I pondered when I started my own business with Arbonne, International. I quickly learned that if you want to get from where you are to where you want to be, you must set goals, write them down and review them daily.

Arbonne offers a pure, safe and benefi-cial product line that helps promote healthy skin and overall good health & well-being. I would love to share more about my company, the products and the incredible income opportunity with you. Arbonne has something for everyone ~ to learn more or to shop on-line with me, please visit my website www.kimdawes.myarbonne.com or email me at Kim Dawes at [email protected].

self-employed, a 23% increase since 19905. Women-owned businesses increased 23% between 1997 and 20046; Hispanic entrepreneurs have increased 30% since 19987, and African-Americans are the group most likely to start their own business8.

You can set your own hours . One of the main benefits of striking out on your own is flexibility. In a recent survey, between 85-94% of young women would take a pay cut to spend more time with their children9. It’s no surprise then that 46% of new women business owners left their jobs for the freedom to set their own hours10. Entrepreneurs can enjoy the flexibility of seeing their children in a school play or spending time with an aging parent.

You can rely on yourself . With job insecurity, flat wages, longer hours and

Today’s entrepreneurs are older (age 50+) and diverse (minorities and women are gaining ground). If you’ve ever thought about taking the leap, here’s why now is a great time:

You’re in good company . As the economy begins to improve, more than half of U.S. companies face an employee exodus as workers see new opportunities1. With raises below 4% for the fourth consecutive year2, and family-friendly programs like flex-time on the chopping block, employees have had enough – and many are striking out on their own.

You can play it safe . In today’s economy, you don’t have to give up your full-time job to become an entrepreneur. Consider ventures that you can start as a sideline while keeping your full-time job, such as providing a service, turning a hobby into a business, or through direct selling (person-to-person). Did you know that 55 percent of Americans have purchased goods or services through direct sales? That’s more than through TV or online shopping combined3.

You can provide a service. While the economy is constricting in some areas – like manufacturing – it is expanding in other areas, such as the service – providing industry. The Bureau of Labor Statistics calls the professional and business services group a “supersector” of the economy, and projects a 30% growth in jobs between 2002 and 20124. Many of today’s entrepre-neurs are service-providers.

You don’t need special skills. People from all walks of life can succeed as entrepreneurs. There are no required levels of educa-tion, experience, financial resources, physical condition, age or gender requirements. More than five million people are 50+ are now

decreased employee benefits, the appeal of going on your own has never been higher. Old entrepreneurs have a level of experience that makes them uniquely equipped for the job11. More than 65% of women starting businesses in the past decade learned the ropes as managers in big corporations12. No matter what your background or experience, you can turn your efforts into earnings by working for yourself.

Affairs to RememberGovenment Affairs

Mike Miller, Graydon Head & RitcheyChairman of Government AffairsWe the People

We the People, in order to form a more perfect union… the opening words of the Constitution of the United States of America; the document that makes we Americans different. The document that loudly proclaims that we have decided to think for ourselves, and have decided to govern ourselves in a more independent, less restrictive way. This is the foundation on which our society is based. The idea that many may effectively be governed by a few if we all get involved and pay attention.

Representative government: electing other people (actually directing other people) to make decisions for us. Decisions which are to be made in our best interests as the representatives understand those interests. Representative government is at the heart of our democracy.

Proper representation demands that the wishes of the many be properly conveyed to those few elected representatives so that matters are properly addressed… for we the people.

Communication is the key to proper repre-sentation. In order for us to make the appro-priate demands and to make our collective views and wishes known, we must be informed. We must have the appropriate opportunity for the exchange of ideas that lead us to the proper decisions. The North-east Cincinnati Chamber Candidates Night is one such opportunity.

The Northeast Cincinnati Chamber Candidates Night is an opportunity for the business community to see and hear candi-dates in a forum that is focused on business related issues. Questions are drafted with the business community in mind. Opposing candidates are given equal time on a level playing field designed to air out the impor-tant issues. The goal is to encourage the free flow of ideas and to flesh out problems so attendees can make knowledgeable, informed decisions at election time.

While there are no questions from the audience during the session, candidates will be invited to mingle with the audi-ence afterwards to address individual

concerns or questions. In the interests of fairness, questions are developed before-hand by a committee of the Chamber and are selected randomly during the evening. Questions are designed to address current issues favoring local governments as well as address anticipated future challenges.

Invitees include candidates for Mason City Council, Deerfield Township Trustee, Deer-field Fiscal Officer and Mason Municipal Court Judge as well as proponents and opponents of the Mason income tax credit ballot issue.

Konrad Kircher of Kircher and Handorf, LLC is coordinating the evening and welcomes your input at [email protected]. Candidates Night will be held the evening of October 23, 2007 at Cedar Village at 6pm.

I challenge you to get involved and become informed. With your involvement, we the people can make the NEC Chamber Candidates Night a Government Affair to Remember.

A “Topping Out” Ceremony is one of the construction industry’s oldest customs, celebrating the highest point of a building’s progress. As the highest beam gets hoisted, an evergreen tree and American Flag are placed on top.

Craig Lindner stated, “Mental illness impacts the lives of many people. It’s a privilege for our family to be involved with

Lindner Center Of Hope Getting CloserTo Opening Doors In MasonMental illness is the #1 public health problem in the country. Currently, psychiatry and psychology offices are overwhelmed with the acute need for appropriate mental health services. Our region is getting closer to being the home of a world class facility that will address this critical need both for our region and across the nation.

On August 3, 2007, the highest steel beam was lifted into place at the site of the new Craig and Frances Lindner Center of HOPE, scheduled to open its doors in the summer of 2008. The 94,000 square foot facility, located on 35 acres of wooded land in Mason, Ohio, will integrate the latest research and advances into individual-ized treatment plans and best practices. The “Topping Out” Ceremony is another reminder that the dream of offering hope and compassion to people and their fami-lies living with mental illness is yet another step closer.

this state-of-the-science center, which will deliver comprehensive, excellent care and will support and attract some of the best clinicians and researchers in the field.”

Construction is being led by Danis Foxx Builders, LLC. For more information about the Lindner Center of HOPE, visit: www.lindnercenterofhope.org or call 513.536.HOPE (4673).

Ribbon CuttingsLifeland Community Church & Carolyn F . Glosby, Attorney at Law Celebrate! On September 9th at 10:30 am, Lifeland Community Church held a Grand Opening of the church and its newly renovated, 4000 sq. ft. ministry center on 600 C. Reading Road in Mason, OH. Mayor Charlene Pelfrey joined Lifeland in celebrating by sharing words of encouragement and chal-lenge to remain involved in the community.

Lifeland’s Lead Pastor, Chad Fagerland, and his wife began the church in the living room of their home a little over 2 years ago. Since that time, the church has grown and has recently completed a 4000 sq. ft. reno-vation. Their official Ribbon Cutting Cere-mony was on September 4th sponsored by the Northeast Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce. In attendance were a number of Mason city officials, business leaders, local pastors, and Lifeland members.

It’s been a w o n d e r f u l ride for me both profes-sionally and p e r s o n a l l y thanks to y o u … o u r members . I will miss everyone!

Laurie Says Goodbye

I’ve enjoyed being able to help new members connect with other members and watch as they form new business relationships, and friendships that will last a life-time . That’s what it’s all about . The more people you meet, the more business you generate .

I’m also going to miss being 411 . You would not believe how

many people call us looking for phone numbers . I love referring Chamber members when a new resident or visitor calls us looking for someone that does heating & cooling or looking for a hotel to stay at during the tennis tourna-ment . We have the knowledge, and people know to call the local Chamber of Commerce for ques-tions they can’t get answered anywhere else . If we don’t have the answer we’ll find it .

I also want to thank everyone who volunteered to help with events . We can’t do it without you .

I want to wish everyone the very best in your businesses and family & friends .

Mason is a hot spot—literally! Temperatures reached 100 degrees and above in August, and over 100 new residents decided to make Mason their home. Clearly, August was crunch time for moving in before school started! Overwhelmingly, new residents cited Mason City Schools as the number one reason they moved to this community. That reasoning applied not only to parents with school-aged children, but also to pre-school parents—and even couples with no children now but anticipating a family in the future.

Four of the families I visited in August live in my neighborhood. The close proximity of these new residents has had many advan-tages! First, I have had the opportunity to follow up with these families. With most of the new residents I meet, I don’t usually get to check up on them weeks later to see how they are adjusting to their move. With these new neighbors, however, I have talked to them at the bus stop, had them over for dinner, and even helped them find a babysitter (my thirteen-year-old daughter is very grateful for that!). Second, I have asked them for feedback about the Basket program. They all commented on how much they love the big, blue tote bags. Those remarks only reinforce my excite-ment about upgrading our welcome bags this fall! My new neighbors also shared which materials grabbed their attention the most—not surprisingly, coupons for some-thing discounted or free win every time!

The best testimonial I have ever received came from a neighbor just a week after she received her welcome bag. As a mother of two children under the age of three, she was feeling overwhelmed with all she had to do—making appointments with doctors and dentists; researching preschools for her daughter; finding a vet for their new puppy; locating a dry cleaner; setting up a new bank account; getting the oil changed in her car—the list went on and on. Her solution? She emptied the contents of her welcome bag, organized all the magnets, pens, brochures, and coupons on her dining room table, and used the materials from the Community Basket to locate the busi-nesses she needed. She said that if those businesses are willing to spend money to welcome her to Mason, then those are the businesses that will earn her loyalty. That’s

My goal for the rest of this year is to continue building the program. I will continue to contact businesses that are members of the Community Basket to encourage their participation. Business SpotlightCorporate Wellness Significantly Reduces Health Care Costs

Five Seasons Sports Club Announces Corporate Program

BusinessWeek Magazine reports that some large corporations are enjoying as much as a 3-to-1 return on investment (ROI) on their wellness programs. Many of these programs are in direct response to the spiraling costs of health care. It is no wonder that increasing activity decreases benefit claims. The US Surgeon General says that a sedentary lifestyle is the number two cause of disease and fatality in the United States. It also reports 75% of all illnesses are preventable and can be attrib-uted to lifestyle related causes and that 53% of Americans are inactive.

“There are a lot of ways to get active,” said Thomas Deere COO of Five Seasons Sports Clubs. “The key is finding something you like and sticking with it everyday.” Five Seasons Sports Club offers Tennis, Swim-ming, Cardio, Group Exercise including Pilates, Yoga and Spinning as well as some less traditional options like Zumba and

Belly Dancing. “A good club will introduce you to a trainer with similar interests so you get the help you need to get started,” added Deere “The Five Seasons mission is to help our members improve the quality of their life through the fitness, social connections and relaxation programs that are right for them”

Let’s assume that you have a company with 2,000 employees. Assume you pay each employee on the average of $150 a day and on the average each employee takes 4 sick days per year. That means by years end, the company would pay out $1.2 million dollars, in totally unproductive pay. If a corporate health/fitness alliance program could decrease sick days by even 1 per year per employee, the company would effectively save $300,000 a year minus the expenses of the program.

Five Seasons announced a new Corporate Alliance Program in August. Companies participating in the program can benefit from custom programming, reduced dues and corporate events at and away from the

club. “We are thrilled with our new Five Seasons Corporate Alliance, “said Sindy Robbins Health Specialist of Children’s Hospital. “Our employees see it as an extra benefit and it will reduce our health care costs.” “Most importantly, if even one employee escapes a cardiac event or has more self esteem because they shed a few pounds it is truly invaluable,” Sindy concluded.

The unique needs of your business start with the unique needs of your most impor-tant people, your employees. The Five Seasons Corporate Alliance is designed to promote health and wellness to your entire company. Imagine results that lead to your company’s ability to increase morale, recruit staff, retain, increase productivity, reduce absenteeism, decrease turnover, alleviate stress and reduce health care costs. You simply cannot get a better return on invest-ment.

The Compass is the Chamber’s bi-weekly electronic newsletter. It goes to nearly 1,600 subscribers. We know that, on average, 36.5% of the recipeints open it, and 13.65% click-through or click open the various links associated with each issue.

According to the latest M+R Strategic Services study of five national nonprofits, newsletter open and click-through rates averaged 20 percent and 4 percent, respec-tively. Karen Matheson, co-author of M+R Strategic Services latest survey of e-news-letters, said these numbers are desirable1.

Considering those numbers, we can proudly state that our members are taking the time to stay up-to-date on the happenings of the Chamber. THANK YOU!

Automaton or Free Thinker? Why settle for a bank that can only offer you a limited array of programs, services and options? What happens to your business when their “solutions” don’t match your needs?

You don’t choose vendors based on pre-packaged one-size-fits-all products. You do business with creative partners who take the time to understand you and design solutions that match your specific needs.

Usable Information Not Product Pitches

National Bank and Trust Company doesn’t hire sales people and disguise them as bankers. We employ business experts and train them to research, find and create unique solutions to

real world challenges. Imagine the impact on your company’s growth and revenue if you added a

partner to your team who understands your industry, has a stake in your success

and has the ability to reach outside the box and

present a complete picture of your

options.

OurFocusIs You

It’s not just a catchy slogan; it’s an honest,

bottom line promise that we want you to hold us

accountable to. Take 5 minutes right now to call Richard Jones at 513-933-0821 and ask him how

he’s going to reinvent banking and make it work for you.
