NA64: Search for dark sector physics in missing energy events !

Approved in March’16 for the A´->inv decay search with e- beam.

The proposed NA64++ research program is significantly extended by the inclusion of searches for dark sector physics, new sub-GeV states coupled to leptons and/or quarks , new symmetries …with leptonic (e,μ) and hadronic (π, K, and p) beams at the CERN SPS.

Goal to explore theoretically interesting parameter space !ε  ∼ 10-6 ‒ 10-3 ; mA´ ~ sub-GeV range (e.g. two-loop GUT interaction) Two runs in 2016: focus on the A´ parameter space suggested for (g-2)μ anomaly.!Growing activities, high intensity/sensitivity experiments in JLab, SLAC, FNAL,…. !Large literature, many recent theoretical and experimental results. !

Proposal for experiment at M2 beam of NA: •  clean 150 GeV µ- beam •  initial µ state can be tagged with BMS. A study is needed. Test run at M2 beam would be useful: •  π/µ < 10-(5-6) purity? •  initial, final µ state tagging purity? •  trigger rate? •  calorimeter hermeticity?

18. Summary !

•  The proposed searches of dark sector physics in missing-energy events with leptonic and hadronic beams at CERN have unique sensitivity and are highly competitive to similar projects. Some of the proposed experiments (on Zμ, KL->inv, X of 8Be) has never been done before.

•  The search for dark photons at NA64 could continue till LS3 in order to accumulate 1012 – 1013 eot and to cover significant area of the A´ parameter space. The X from 8Be excess could be studied in 2017 run with possible continuation in 2018. The use of H4 line is crucial.

The runs till LS2 will provide better understanding of background, rate capability and improved sensitivity for other light particle search. •  The opportunity to perform the search for Zμ and other light states

coupled to µ with the M2 muon beam at CERN is rather unique. For optimal design of the setup a study of the M2 BMS performance is needed to see whether it meet the NA64 requirements. A test run at M2 in 2018 would be useful.

•  To evaluate background level and sensitivity of the π0, η,η´, KS KL->

invisible decay searches measurements of the yield for the neutral meson charge-exchange production are required. This could be done at a π, Κ beam during a short run at H2, H4, H8.
