1 N5 2020 HELPFUL NOTES Ad Hoc Simulator Training (B777) Aloha! Well, I’m back earlier than expected. I was unpleasantly surprised to be the very first candidate to be rostered for the brand new N5 sim session for 2020. This is a new training event devised during this COVID era as many of us are not very current. The session is supposedly no jeopardy and “no threat” and is not scored in TPMS – and really, it was. But still, take that for what it’s worth. I figured it’d be worthwhile writing up something so you know what to expect as I hadn’t a clue. I’ll just copy the email my sim partner and I were sent by J.T. (the current FTM) describing the upcoming session: Dear colleague, Some of you will be aware that we are implementing a new N5 simulator. The session is designed as no threat training that will not be scored in TPMS (though it will be recorded as to contents completed). The objective is to enhance the currency of our pilots in normal line operations and to give some exposure to areas of our operation highlighted as being subject to high event rates, or perceived to be high on our list of threats. In brief, the contents will be: LOFT performed from HKG – KHH (approx. 1.5 hours block time) followed by – Scenario-based training – an option of the Following: Unreliable Airspeed event on Take Off Engine Fail after V1 OEI ILS approach and Missed Approach Manual handling – (Circuit) Discontinued approach (Within 1000 feet of MA Alt or above MA ALT) False Glideslope capture Smoke and Fumes (High speed return) Low fuel contents (High speed return) Windshear Students choice of training items above or own request You have been assigned the first sessions; to be run over this week. AsnotedfromthebriefingpackageandtheemailsentfromtheFTM,thenextportionoftheN5consistsofYOUgettingtochooseWHATyouwanttobrush-upon.Youcanselectamongsttheprovidedoptions–orevensomenotlisted.It’salljusttrainingandexposure.Wewantedtoseeanexampleoffalseglideslopecapture–butthesimwasnotprogrammedforthis(gofigure)sowewereunabletovisitit.Intheendwedidanairspeedunreliableexerciseaftertakeoff(ondeparture)andcarrieditouttoasuccessfullanding.Wealsodidadual-enginefailureAutoland(whichisNOTonthelist).Andfinallywedidahighspeedreturnduetosmoke/fumesinthecabin.It’stasterchoiceandyoucanselectwhateveryouwishsoIwon’tgointoanydetailshere.It’sallgoodfunandjusttogetyoubackintoflyingshape.That’sit.AsyoucanseetheN5mostlyconsistsofaLOSthatfeelslikeanRT/PC.Havefun.ThelastN5wasin2015solet’shopewedon’tseethisagainforanother5years.Stayhealthy&safe.Allpau.Aloha!
