A YEAR ago, I wrote about not making resolutions thatwould surely vanish down a rabbit hole of unattainable goals.Instead of looking forward to a new year, I looked back at theold year to remember people I would miss that had passed onto glory. Though I didn’t know them, their presence in theworld brought me enjoyment or inspiration. The response tothat column was heartening, as several readers told me aboutpeople they missed. And this year, I have even more to writeabout.

December was tragic, when a day apart Carrie Fisherand her mother, Debbie Reynolds, traveled to a galaxy far,far away. Carrie Fisher was noted for her role as Princess

Leia in “Star Wars.” I admired her more for her writing thanfor her acting. After writing the screenplay version of herbook “Postcards from the Edge,” she became one ofHollywood’s most sought-after script doctors.

At age 19, Debbie Reynolds learned to dance so well inonly three months that she was able to match Gene Kelly andDonald O’Conner step for step in “Singing in the Rain” —still my all-time favorite movie musical.

In 2016, we lost three people who were so well knownthey were recognizable by a single name, Prince, Ali andArnie. I was never part of the Prince phenomenon. Raising a

did.If I had the talent to write the music and lyrics to just one

song, it would be Leonard Cohen’s “Hallelujah.” There is notraditional religion in the lyrics of that song. Instead, theycome from a place of great pain; from belief turned sour foranyone who has sat in a chair and glowered at God and asked,“How come you parted the Red Sea but didn’t cure this onelittle person of cancer?” Cohen became part of the HallelujahChorus in 2016.

W.P. Kinsella wrote about baseball with the passion thatElizabeth Barrett Browning wrote about love. His book,“Shoeless Joe,” became the movie “Field of Dreams.” I canbe channel surfing and come upon this film and watch it tothe end no matter where it is in the story. “If you build it, theywill come,” and, “Go the distance,” have taken their placesamong Hollywood’s most memorable movie lines. Kinsella,a Canadian, ended his life under Canada’s assisted dying leg-islation.

Earl Hamner created “The Waltons” television programfrom his book “Spencer’s Mountain.” It was family entertain-ment that that didn’t belittle any member of the family theway so many sit-coms of his era did. It was significant to mebecause it covered a time frame during the Great Depressionand World War II that mirrored my own growing up years. Itssignature sign off with the Walton family members saying“goodnight” to each other was repeated in millions of homesacross the country.

J.M. Barrie said this about charm: “If you have it, you

A short list of people I’ll miss as we head into the New Yearfamily while earning a living took precedence over popmusic. Yet I recognized his talent as a musician.

Muhammad Ali angered and irritated me through much ofhis career, and not just because he was a draft dodger, but hispure talent at his sport finally won me over, as it did much ofthe world. Simply put, he was the greatest.

Arnold Palmer impacted his sport more than any golfer. Isaw him in person. Standing on a tee box he corkscrewed hisbackswing and uncoiled himself into a golf swing of suchthunderous power you expected the ground around him to bescorched. The electricity emanating from him when hehitched up his pants and looked down the fairway could havelit up a metropolis. He was the king.

David Bowie created an alternative universe with some ofhis music. He populated it with the original “Major Tom,”John Glenn, a hero who served his country in so many waysthat he would get my vote for any Heroes Hall of Fame. Inmy mind, I see them irrevocably intertwined with Glennbeing Major Tom “sitting in a tin can/far above theworld/Planet Earth is blue/and there’s nothing I can do.” I’llmiss them both.

I saw my first National Hockey League game at the oldDetroit Olympia Stadium on Grand River Avenue. GordieHowe generated the same intrinsic electricity that ArnoldPalmer did. He was bigger, stronger, faster, meaner and moretalented than anyone else on the ice. At age 51, he played inall 80 games for the Hartford Whalers in the World HockeyAssociation. The Gordie Howe hat trick – one goal, one assistand one fight in a game — exemplified how he combinedpower and finesse. Number 9 was simply the best at what he See GERVASE page 10RE

don’t need to have anything else; and if youdon’t have it, it doesn’t much matter whatelse you have.” Surely he was speaking aboutNancy Reagan, whose copious charm wascombined with beauty, grace and devotion. She joined the Gipper in March.

Atticus Finch is one of my favorite fic-tional characters, both in books and movies. He was the creation of Harper Lee in “ToKill a Mockingbird.” Her next novel wasn’twell received. No matter. When you’ve writ-ten a masterpiece, who cares what anyonesays?

Sadly, a couple of apples fell from my ownfamily tree. I’ll miss them both. Of course, Imiss the many friends and family memberswho are gone — one in particular, whosedeath taught me that when you lose someonewho is very close to you, you understand thatlove is forever. It is a hard way to learn animportant lesson, but it’s one that sooner orlater comes to all of us.

contingent creditors, and persons who may otherwise be interested in the will or estate, or both, of PATRICIA JANE STE-PHENSON, also known PATRICIA SHAT-TUCK STEPHENSON.

A PETITION FOR PROBATE has been filed by ROBERT STEPHENSON in the Superior Court of California, County of MONTEREY.

The Petition for Probate requests that ROBERT C. STEPHENSON be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent.

THE PETITION requests the dece-dent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court.

THE PETITION requests authority to administer the estate under the Indepen-dent Administration of Estates Act. (This au-thority will allow the personal representa-tive to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give no-tice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the pro-posed action.) The independent adminis-tration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority.

A hearing on the petition will be held in this court as follows:

Date: February 22, 2017Time: 9:00 a.m.Dept.: 13Address: Superior Court of Califor-

nia, County of Monterey, 1200 Aguajito Road, Monterey, CA 93940.

If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written ob-jections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney.

If you are a creditor or a contin-gent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative ap-pointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general per-sonal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate

Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law.

You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or ac-count as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk.
