Case, with directions on howto make your own, check out:"Christer's Wardian Case".Christer lives in Sweden, butthe principles he uses can beapplied in Illinois as well.

_wardian_ case.htm

A "Wardian Case" is a selfcontained greenhouse thatlooks like a large aquarium onlegs. It has a lid and usually afan, and can be used to growsmall plants in an area, oftena living room. The enclosurehelps keep the humidity highwith breezes (supplied by thefan), creating a microclimateof rainforest, the home ofmany of our orchids.

The size of Christer's casae is34" x 18" x 26". He hasconstructed a frame of 25mmaluminum, with sides andback fo glass. The bottom isthicker glass (6mm). Thedoor opens from the top andis hinged.

The case is watertight to adepth of 2 inches. You willsee why below.LightHe uses four fluorescentlights, two of which are Grolux 25w and two Aquastar25w 10.000Kelvin. (I don'tknow the second type but Iwould be two regularfluorescent bulbs would dothe trick)Ventilation

Ventilation is proided by a 12vfan (probably one of the smallplastic types available from ahome improvement center.)The case is not airtight andthere a small slits at thedoors, which allows for intakeof fresh air and "leaking" ofstale air.

HumidityThe reason the bottom needs

to be airtight is that the fottomis filled with pebbles and thefan blows over the wetpebbles which keeps thehumidity between 60 & 85%.WateringChrister used a wateringsystem from Gardena thatmists the plants one minuteevery three hours during thedaytime.Christer recommendsreainwater but he cannotsame much and recommendsusing a reverse osmosis filter.TemperatureSummer temperatures inSweden can reach over

32C(90F) [sounds like Illinois, right?] During the hot weatherhe turns off two inflorescentbulbs to get the temperaturedown to 17C (63F) nights andabout 25-26C (77-79C) duringthe daytime.

Comments, suggestions orquestions can be addressedto christer.carlson@home oruse the link at the web page.

Comment from Barb:Each of the headingsdescribed in this article are

issues that you would need toconsider in your own growingset-up, whether it is in aWardian Case, basement, porch, window sill, orgreenhouse. Think aboutwhich of the techniques usedin this samll Wardian Casecould be used to improve yourown crowing conditions.

A Blonde walks into a bank in New

York City and asks for the loanofficer. She says she's going toEurope on business for two weeksand needs to borrow $5000. Thebank officer says the bank will needsome kind of security for such aloan, so the Blonde hands over thekeys to a new Rolls-Royce parked onthe street in front of the bank.

Everything checks out, and the bankagrees to accept the car as collateralfor the loan.

An employee drives the Rolls into thebank's underground garage andparks it there.

Two weeks later the Blonde returns, repays the $5,000 and the interestewhich comes to $15.41. The loanofficer says, "We are very happy tohave had your business, and thistransaction has worked out verynicely, but we are a little puzzled. While you were awasy we checkedyou out and found that you are amultimillionaire. What puzzles us iswhy would you bother to borrow$5000?"

The Blonde replied," Where else inNew York can I park my car for twoweeks for 15 bucks?"

Finally, a "Smart Blonde" joke!

Big Rocks

One day an expert in timemanagement was speaking to agroup of business students, and, todrive home a point, used anillustration those students will never

forget.

As he stood in from of the group ofhigh powered overachievers he sai,"Okay, time for a quiz". Then hepulled out a one-gallon, widemouthed Mason jar and set it on thetable in front of him. Then he

produced about a dozen fist sizedrocks, and carefully placed them, one at a time, into the jar. When thejar was filled to the top and no morerocks would fit inside, he asked, "isthis jar full?"

Everyone in the class said, "Yes".Then he said, "Really"?

He reached under the table and

pulled out a bucket of gravel. Thenhe dumped some gravel in andshook the jar causing pieces ofgravel to work themselves down intothe space between the big rocks. Then he asked the group oncedmore, "Is the jar full?"

By this time the class was on to him."Probably not, " one of themanswered. "Good!" he replied. Hereached under the table and broughtout a bucket of sand in the jar and itwent into all of the spaces leftbetween the rocks and the gravel.Once more he asked the questions,"Is this jar full?"

"No!" the class shouted. Once againhe said, "Good." Then he grabbed apitcher of water and began to pour itin until the jar was filled to the brim. Then he looked at the class and

asked, "What is the point of thisillustration?"

One eager beaver raised his handand said, "The point is, no matter

how full your schedule is, if you tryreally hard you can always fit somemore things in it!"

"No," the speaker replied, "that's notthe point. The truth this illustrationteaches us is: If you don't put the bigrocks in first, you'll never get them inat aiL" What are the 'big rocks' inyou life? Your children; your lovedones; your education; your dreams;a worthy cause; teaching ormentoring others; doing things thatyou love; time for yourself; yourhealth; your significant other?

Remember to put these BIG ROCKSin first or you'll never get them in atall.

If you sweat the little stuff (thegravel, the sand) then you'll fill yourlife with little things you worry aboutthat don't really matter, and you'llnever have the real quality time youneed to spend on the big, importantstuff. So, tonight, or in the morning, ask yourself this question: What arethe 'big rocks' in my life? Then, putthose in you jar first.

Good growing! Winter istought for windowsills andlights. Watch for critters, and keep the humidity up.As the day get longer, startfertilizing more toencourage those good fatenew leaves and roots.

Leo's RoadtripTo IndianapolisThe weekend before Thanksgiving Itook a carload of plants to theIndianapolis Orchid Show. Theshow was held at their local botanic

garden near downtown. It was arelly nice small scale show. Theyonly had about 12 displays but thequality of each was really quite good.Woji Krilunis had in his display anumber of species I had never seenbefore in cultivation. Another

member, who name escapes me,had 3 of the plants in his displayreceive Certificates of Cultural Merit.

One was a Cattleya with over 50flowers on it--a huge plant, immaculately grown.

All the displays were really niceINCLUDING the 10S dispaly. Thanks to Paul Passine and Lois

Cinert, who made the trip down, andBarb Bennett, Rich Unger, DianeNielson, and Sherry Maloney whosent plants down with either me orLois. Paul showed up with a vanload of magnificently flowered vandaand ascocenda hybrids, hungerplants, several were over 3 feet tallwith huge spikes of great big f1owers-hot pinks, dark blues, and everycolor in between. Without his

contribution our display would havebeen nice but very ordinary. Paulreceived TWO Best in Class

trophies--one for a huge VandaPompimol and the second for aPaph. Spicerianum with at least 30flowers on it. Congratulations Paul!!!

I am really happy to say that I havebeen getting better response fromthe members about helping with theaway shows. Thank you one and all.It is a fun time; I use these shows to

go visiting. After setting up onFriday, Lois and George Cinertheaded right home (they areunapologetic moming peopleD. Pauland I hooked up with an old friend ofmine from Indianapolis, had dinnerand a beer before heading out.Sunday, I made a stop at theHoosier Orchid Company. They areon the Northwest side of town. Leon

showed me around and managed torelieve me of my orchid allowance forthe next three months. Then we

gathered at the garden for teandown. Even Tom Franczak made

the trip down. Afterwards a few ofus found a little Chinese restaurant

in a strip mall that had very authentic(read that "flaming hot chilies")Hunan cooking. My meal was greatand quite spicy. Tom orderedsomething with no hot peppers in it-as a result his food was awful. You

cannot have good Chinese cookingwithout ginger, garlic and hot chilepeppers. We teased Tom endlessly.Did you know you can make Tombreak out in a sweat by talking aboutChiles? It was a fun little trip.

The next away shows that the 10Swill be attending are:Minneapolis--January 28-30.Madison, WI--February 5-6Lansing, MI--February 26 & 27Bettendorf, IA--March 18-19Des Moines, IA--March 25 -26

So, if anyone out there want to joinme for a road trip, give a call; theyare fun. The society will pick up yourgas expense and sometimes lodgingfor the more distant shows. I want tothank Sue Carlson in advance. Shehas volunteered to handle at least

one of the Iowa shows. Anyone elsewho would like to tag along or wouldwant to lead a trip, give me a call.Thanks---

In November there was a bit ofmisunderstanding with somemembers and the staff of theChicago Botanic Gardenregardingthe use of the circle forparking, unloading plants, andreturning later to load them backup. This was a cause forconcern to us and, as I foundout, to the Garden also.

The Garden encourages itsmember societies to use itsfacility. This includes monthlymeetings during which membersare able to bring in plants fordisplayand sale. We are able touse the circle for drop off. Get atoken at the guard gate. Driveback; park inthe circle, butc!onot block the crosswalk to thenew garden area. This mustremain open. You may takeenough time to bring your plantsinto the building. You must thenmove your car to the generalparking area. Unpack andarrange your plants after youreturn. If yo need help with yourboxes as you unload, carts areavailable, and the securitypeoplewill help you locate them.If yo have a handicappedparking permit, ask at the guardgate for the location of closeparking. Onsome days spacesmay be available near thebuilding. Our privileges at theGarden are the same .aseveryone elses'. No more! Noless!

After the meeting, the gate willbe raised at 3:00pm to makepickup easier. I will call to

remind them several daysbefore each meeting.

As the us of the Garden haschanged and increased over thelast few years, athey have madeadjustments to our relationship. We are both trying to be goodfriends. and good neighbors. Ifyou have complaints orsuggestions about anythingregarding use of the Garden, please call me.. We want this tobe a good relationship that isadvantageous to all of us.
