THE GREEN WAVEFebruary 2014, No 33

WELCOME TO OUR 3 NEW PARTICIPANTSThe Port of Gulfport , situated directly on the Gulf of Mexico, provides services for carriers and shippers serving the Americas. The Port’s central loca-tion translates into greater efficiencies for ves-sel operators and less intermodal mileage to U.S. distribution markets. As the third busiest container facility in the US Gulf, the port also maintains a bustling bulk and break-bulk ope-ration. A landlord port, the business interests consist of five principle marine-related busi-ness lines, and one non-maritime related busi-ness line.

It is an exciting time for Green Marine! The sixth period of self-assessment is in full swing, the Secretariat welcomes a new employee, the environmental program is attracting new members, Green Marine’s corporate image has been revamped, and the seventh GreenTech conference is packed with new features!

The Port of St. John’s is one of North America’s most modern and accessible supply and service centres. It is the primary offshore energy supply and service centre on the East Coast of Canada and a des-tination of choice for the cruise ship industry. And, true

to its roots, it is one of the most active fish-handling ports in the province of Newfoundland and Labrador. As a re-sult, the Port of St. John’s is a strategic transportation gateway and business hub in Atlantic Canada.

The Port of Indiana - Burns Harbor, founded in 1970, is one of three ports that are operated on Lake Mi-chigan and the Ohio River by the Ports of Indiana, a statewide port autho-rity. The Port of India-na – Burns Harbor is located in Portage, IN, on the south shore of Lake Michigan, just 18 nautical miles from Chicago. The port handles international ships via the Great Lakes connection to the Atlantic Ocean, and barges via inland river links to 38 states and the Gulf of Mexico.

Green Marine’s logo has been redesigned and the colours refreshed. The new shade variations create a depth perspective, the newly sized icon and text have a more balanced appearance, and the ship’s outline has been redesigned to have more impact. In addition to the corporate logo itself, other versions of the logo intended for the program’s partners and supporters have also been reworked, as has the certification seal intended for participants who have successfully completed the certification and verification process. This new logo is the first step in a complete overhaul of Green Marine’s communication tools. We are actively working at developing our new website to be posted on line this spring! If you are a Green Marine member and have not received the new logo, please contact Green Marine’s communications manager at 418-649-6004 ext. 302 or by e-mail at [email protected]. Thank you for supporting and promoting the Green Marine environ-mental program!

Green Marine is proud to say GreenTech 2014 will be its first carbon-neutral conference. Green Marine is seeking Planetair’s certification for GreenTech 2014’s carbon neutrality. With Planetair’s assistance, the conference’s organizers will quantify the event’s green-house gas emissions, identify opportunities to reduce that GHG, and then offset the conference’s climate impact with the purchase of carbon credits. You can help Green Marine offer a carbon-neutral event by becoming the conference’s Green sponsor. This exclusive sponsorship package ($2,500) will help to pay for the certification and carbon-offset costs. All of the relevant information is in the conference’s sponsorship plan.

Sponsorship Plan

Green Marine’s annual conference is always a great way to promote your sustainability commitment, show-case your products and services, and ensure great visibility for your organization. GreenTech 2014’s spon-sorship plan has been diversified. The addition of several new categories enables you to choose the level of commitment and type of visibility you want! You can sponsor a coffee break or meal or become the «wired» sponsor by facilitating Internet access for all of the conference’s attendees.

GREEN MARINE ENTERS ITS SIXTH EVALUATION YEAR

The evaluation phase is in full swing for Green Marine participants. Canadian and U.S. ports, ship owners, ter-minals, shipyards and Seaway corporations participating in the environmental program are reviewing in signi-ficant detail their environmental performance for the year 2013. To receive their certification, Green Marine participants must complete a specific process of evaluation, verification as well as publication of their annual environmental performance results in accordance with the new certification policy adopted by Green Marine in 2013. Summaries, signed by the participating company’s CEO, must be submitted to the Green Marine Secretariat by April 1st. The new 2013 self-assessment guides and summaries are now ready and available on line to facilitate this yearly evaluation process. Shipowners self-evaluation guide Shipowners summary

INDUSTRY SUCCESS STORIES

One of Green Marine’s founding participants, Fednav Limited, has received the inaugural Lloyd’s List North American Maritime Award for the Environment category. The award ceremony took place in Houston, Texas, February 19th. Lloyd’s List created this first-ever industry-wide awards event for the North American maritime shipping industry last fall. The awards complement the Lloyd’s List series of award ceremonies held annually in London (for the global awards), Greece, the Middle East, Asia and Aus-tralia. The Environment award recognizes the contribution by an individual, company or association from the maritime industry towards an improved outcome for the environment. Fednav sha-red the honour with the North American Marine Environment Protection Association (NAMEPA), which also received the award in the Environment category.

NGO Shipbreaking Platform, a global coalition of organizations seeking to prevent dirty and dangerous shipbreaking practices worldwide, has published a complete list of ships that were dismantled around in the world in 2013. End-of-life vessels contain toxic materials such as asbestos, heavy metals, PCBs and organic waste within their structures. Of the 1,213 large oceangoing vessels that were scrapped in 2013, 645 were sold to substandard beaching facilities in India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. However, other shipping companies are showing their seriousness about responsible dismantling as part of their environmental policies. For example, NGO Shipbreaking Platform noted that Canada Steamship Lines has taken the additional step of having its ships dismantled (and recycled as much as possible) within Organization for Economic Co-operation and De-velopment (OECD) countries only.

The latest beneficiary of the Prince Rupert Port Authority’s Community Investment Fund is the Prince Rupert Salmon Enhancement Society and Oldfield Creek Fish Hat-chery. Using the port authority’s contribution of $10,000, the volunteer group has created the Salmon Education and Stewardship Centre. The new facility consists of inter-pretive galleries that include a classroom and wet and dry labs to educate visitors of all ages. The Oldfield Creek Fish Hatchery is largely operated by a dedicated volunteer base, composed of college students, residents and professionals within fishery agencies. With a focus on re-establishing and sustaining Prince Rupert’s salmon populations, the Hat-chery and Society depend on local donations to fund their research and conservation efforts.
