How to make a sketchbook.Making yourself a sketchbook is pretty easy and the best thing is that you can choose what paper you would like to use and what size you would like it to be. You could use plain white paper or a mixture of plain, coloured and lined. You could also recycle old books, magazines or wrapping paper to make a cover. Here are the instructions of three different ways to make a sketchbook.

To make this simple sketchbook you need 6 pieces of A4 paper and a large elastic band or string.First, fold your pieces of paper in half. Once you have folded them in half, tuck them inside of each other to make a booklet.

Finally open the booklet to the middle page and lay flat on the table. To hold all your pages together carefully wrap the elastic band over all the pages into the centre fold OR use some string or ribbon to wrap around centre fold and tie in a knot.

Simple Stitched Sketchbook

To make this simple stitched sketchbook you need 6 pieces of A4 paper, an extra piece of paper for the cover, a ruler, a pencil and some cotton thread and a needle.

First, fold your pieces of paper in half. Once you have folded them in half, open each of the pages out and mark a small dot in the centre fold at 5cm and 15cm. Then use the needle to push a hole through each the dots you have made.

Next tuck all your pages inside of each other to make a booklet. Cut a long piece of thread and put it through the needle. Double it up and tie a knot in the end.

From the inside of the booklet put the needle though one of the holes and through all the pages until you come out of the cover. Leave around 10cm of thread with the knot on the end in the centre of the booklet. Then put the needle through the next hole on the outside cover and thread through the pages until it comes out through the centre page again. Repeat this two more times.

You need to finish with the needle in the centre of the booklet. Lastly, cut the needle off the thread and tie it with the 10cm knotted end that you left.

Mini Concertina Sketchbook

To make this simple stitched sketchbook you need 6 pieces of A4 paper, a pair of scissors, a ruler, a pencil and glue stick.

First, fold your pieces of paper in half along the longest side then cut along the fold lines so that you end up with 6 long pieces of paper.

Measure a 2cm strip along the width of each of the pieces of paper. Fold the paper in half to this line and then fold the paper over on the line so that you end up with a tab on each of the folded pieces.

Lastly, line up each of the pages so that the tabs line up with the next then glue them together.

Create a cover or title page for your sketchbook.Once you have made your sketchbook, you need to decorate the cover – this can be using whatever materials you like. If you have used some wrapping paper to cover your book then you should decorate the first page instead.

I decided to use a stencil and put text on my cover, using different

pens and pencils. I also have limited colours.

You could use paint, pencil, pen, stencils, printing, stamps, collage, stickers, doodles, photos…anything you like! Make it personal to you, your interests and a style of art you like.

A Level Fine Art Please find below a list of essential equipment required for A Level study in Fine Art. Do not worry if you are unable to purchase materials due to the current situation, I have listed some homemade recipes for creating paint which you will find on a PowerPoint titled ‘Homemade Paint’. Please aim to complete the ‘Yr12 Transition Project Journal’ during the months of May to July. Details can be found on the PowerPoint of the same name. Details are also listed below of a mini project to be completed during the months of July to August. This work is to support creative enquiry and to maintain skills which will set you in good stead for A Level study. Work should be handed in during the first Fine Art lesson in year 12. Students should spend an appropriate amount of time on each piece for a quality A Level finish. Rushed work will not suffice.

o TASK 1: Purchase of essential equipment- A3 Spiral-bound sketchbook A2 Portfolio Pack of assorted lead grade pencils Acrylic paints Watercolours Oil paint Paint brush set Oil pastels Chalks

o TASK 2: You are to develop a mini project of a personal theme. Consider basing your project on something meaningful to you such as family & friends, animals, landscapes, architecture, objects etc. Your mini project must consist of:

1. A selection of photographs 2. A series of drawings (five minimum) on different scales and using various tonal media. Use the grid

system for accuracy and work from your own photographs. 3. Two In depth written analysis on two favourite artists. 4. Two A4 recreations of your chosen artists work, exploring colour and techniques as your artists. 5. Five media experiments in the style of your artists and on different grounds (surfaces such as

paper, card, board etc) and also on different scales (A4, A3, A2 & A1). Be inventive with media and explore relief matter and mixing media for effect. Work on top of photocopies of initial drawings or trace from your drawings.

6. A final piece which links successfully with all your preparation work. Do consider scale and style for maximum impact.

All work completed in class next year and at home will form part of the coursework component. In September each student will receive a checklist for their first major coursework project to which the mini summer project will be added We look forward to receiving the completed project.

What?Create a visual art journal which reflects aspects of your own life and personality in a small A5 sketchbook or altered book.

How?Use a combination of drawings, paintings and text/words to illustrate the suggested themes using a range of materials, techniques and processes.

Why?To develop and refine your observation drawing skills by looking more closely at things around you that you see every day, and to explore skills in creating drawings from imagination.

To begin with you will need a sketchbook. You would have made one in the taster session, but if you are using a ready made sketchbook, try to use one that is no bigger than A5 in size to create your journal as this is a good size. It’s also just as easy to make your own - look at some of these examples for ideas. Just use whatever you have available at home. Check out the links and look on YouTube for ideas linked to handmade artist sketchbooks.

What will I draw?

Each double page will have a theme (we have given you 30 to start with)which should take you up to at least the Summer term. You can draw from direct observation, use your own photos or find images on the internet as inspiration. Look at the slides below with artists who use sketchbooks and journals.

You can add more pages and continue it over the Summer too, ready to bring back in September.

You can use small t it les using a relevant font as

a way to give context to your page

Use a range of different size drawings on the page and

add small images and boxes

Use annotation to write notes or add further

information about the things you have drawn

Page inspiration and layout ideas

You can write down the location, date and the t ime that you do

your page entry.

Think carefully about layout and composit ion. Some pages can be filled with images and others can have

lots of empty space.

Use more than one media or technique per double page. Try using different techniques, such as cross hatching, continuous line,

detailed tonal studies etc

Think about literacy when you

annotate your pages, and use

these to create a

flow and visual story which travels

across different pages.

Jose Naranja turns ordinary

notebooks into highly detailed works

of art. The artist uses watercolours, stamps, writing, elements of

photography and drawings to turn

each notebook into a one of a kind

masterpiece.

Naranja worked as an aeronautical engineer for many years but

eventually decided to quit and devote his life to art and travels. The

artist developed his passion for notebook art in 2005 when he discovered Moleskine pocket journals. As hard as it may be to believe,

Jose is a self-taught artist, but his skills are remarkable. So far the artist

has filled in 12 notebooks and recently has begun binding his own, to

make his art even more personal.

Frida Kahlo

Frida Kahlo's life was expressed through her work. A chronological look at her artwork provides an understanding of the events that changed her life: her passions,

motivations, disappointments, and desires. Paint ing was cathart ic for her, however, writ ing and keeping a diary also helped her to establish a relat ionship with herself, and to find

a way of expressing her afflict ions during the final 10 years of her life.

Kahlo found that writ ing, as well as paint ing, was useful not just for communicating with her family and friends—and also as a way of connecting with her own feelings, conveying her ideas on her art ist ic practice, and expressing her worries and pains, both physical and emotional.
