Attendance at the world’s biggest exhibition for glass and glass processing, is seen as a must for any serious professional in the industry. The Ritec ship is available for anyone attending the show as an exhibitor or visitor with

In a report it has published, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) it was also argued that £17 billion of public money spent by LEPs ‘needed to be accounted for’.It calls on LEPs to ‘place small businesses at the heart of their plans for local economic growth’.

This is the first report of its kind and it stresses small businesses cannot be ignored as the economic recovery continues.

The FSB believes that LEPs are the right vehicle to deliver local economic growth across England but stresses that the voice of small businesses needs to be better represented within LEPs.

SMEs have been responsible for four in five (84%) jobs created in the private sector between 2010 and 2013, and represent almost half (48%) of private sector turnover. However, the report finds that large businesses are perceived to have most influence within LEPs.

Two in five (39%) local authorities and two thirds (67%) of FSB representatives surveyed felt that large businesses exert the greatest influence over LEPs.

The research finds that many LEPs would be better placed to maximise local growth opportunities if they consulted more effectively with the small business

community, particularly around procurement support. Three quarters (77%) of small businesses want LEPs to offer procurement advice as part of their business support package, but only a quarter (25%) of LEPs are planning to offer this kind of service.

While it is important for LEPs to reform their strategic role, the FSB wants to see them become more effective at providing the advice and services small businesses need.

“LEPs are crucial to delivering local economic growth across England,” admitted John Allan, National Chairman, FSB. “While some have done a good job of reaching out to the small business community, others need to up their game.”

“Small firms will ultimately be the ones creating most of the jobs and prosperity in the private sector, so it is absolutely essential that they are at the heart of all LEPs thinking and plans.”

Owner of a solar panel business has been fined for safety failings after two brothers fell through fragile roof not identified as a riskBrynley Perrett, 37, suffered a compression fracture of his back and sternum in the incident at Llan-y-nant Farm, near Trellech, Monmouthshire, in June, 2013. His brother, Anthony, was fortunate to escape injury after both had fallen 15ft.

They were installing solar panels on a building at the farm on behalf of Andrew Green, trading as Green Park Power. He was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found there was no equipment or measures in place, such as nets or scaffold edge protection, to prevent or mitigate a fall.

Cwmbran Magistrates’ Court heard that Green

failed to make an adequate assessment of the risks of working on a fragile roof and did not take sufficient action to reduce those risks. He pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined £4,500 and ordered to pay costs of £1,500.

“Both brothers were fortunate not to have suffered far more serious injury in this easily avoidable incident,” stated Steve Richardson, HSE Inspector, speaking. “Had nets, or other safety measures, been installed then the fall risk would have been significantly minimised and the likelihood of injury reduced. Working on a roof can be dangerous, with falls accounting for more deaths in the construction industry than any other type of incident. The risks are well known, and guidance is freely available outlining how to work safely at height.”

Mr Richardson went on to explain that the onus was on Green to ensure the safety of those in his employment but he had failed to do so. “Those in charge of the work must be properly qualified and competent to ensure that the work is carried out safely,” he concluded.

Further information about working safely at height can be found on the HSE website: www.hse.gov.uk/falls.

The downturn is behind us and the good times mean we can relax - wrong! As Michael Gannon found out when he attended Everglade Windows’ Customer Conference.Held at its headquarters in Perivale, West London, this was a second conference in a year organized by the trade fabricator. While the first had concentrated on what turned out to be the successful launch to its installer customers of the Air aluminium bi fold and sliding door system, this one in September offered advice on how to manage the businesses in a more favorable trading climate.

Entitled ‘Upsell in the Upturn’, the conference might have been guilty of being a self-congratulatory exercise. After all Everglade itself has been able to grow throughout the recession, not made anyone redundant and seen both its PVC-U and aluminium business more then hold its own in challenging market conditions.

As its Operations Director, Yogesh Gopal, explained to the audience: “The market looks a lot more positive with installers working flat out.”

Sales of Air had been “encouraging” and there was an improvement in the PVC-U range with more choice of colours and Secured by Design for its hardware (SBD) for windows. Everglade has worked closely and

beneficially with Kommerling to achieve significant improvements. It has been Kommerling’s oldest customer in the South East for over 15 years. Working together, the two have been getting across the message that a window is more than just a window. The range Everglade can offer to its installer customers now can claim to have the highest quality in terms of security, energy ratings, and comfort to the end user. Added to this, Kommerling profiles are now lead free.

Where the conference diverged from what could have been an afternoon sales speech, was in what followed.

Andy Ball of Balls2Marketing explained that post-recession can offer more challenges than during one. This may come as a surprise but according to a Plimsoll report, 34% of window manufacturers were at risk of failing at the start of an upturn.

The reasons are more obvious than having to batten down the hatches in the bad times.

For example, businesses can be slow to deal with a spurt in demand after a long and flat period, especially if staff have been laid off. Failing to deal with more enquiries and sales can and is, compounded by materials and skills shortages. Debt levels may increase and while still in a highly competitive market, margins can come under threat.

Using social media to best effect was explained jointly by Sarah Ball and Jemma Bradley from Ball2Marketing.Social media has opened a whole new way of communicating with potential customers and acquiring new business. For example on Facebook, over 750 million log in every day and women over 55 years of age often use Facebook for purchasing products. It may come as a surprise but already 48% of tradesmen win new business via social media and that architects are using Twitter and Facebook for conveying their views on products and systems.

There are an estimated 200,000 different search

engine platforms with industry professionals and trade people opting for Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In. At the end of what proved to be a presentation that offered some surprising aspects, one could only agree with the assessment made by Sarah Ball: “social media is now an integral part of business.”

The conference also dealt with the matter of health and safety at work. Everglade’s Sailesh Chudasama pointed out that the government was looking to exempt 3.1 million self-employed from health and safety legislation that currently applies to them as long as it did not deal with actual work that could endanger life.

It is clear that events like this organised by trade fabricators, can offer enormous assistance to installers by dealing with matters that deal with more than just what can be sold but the value that can be provided to customers in a more general way.

As many people are aware, sourcing hardware products that will be displayed either near the coast or in highly populated industrial areas can be very difficult, as brass or zinc based products pit and tarnish very quickly due to the salt in the air. This is particularly evident in areas within a 25 mile radius of the coast, or within 5 miles of high populated industrial areas.UAP are constantly looking for ways to improve their ever expanding product range, and have developed Nanocoast® hardware - a range of door hardware products that are specifically designed for the coast. Nanocoast® products are made from 304 grade stainless steel, and have also been salt spray tested to

ASTM B117 for 2,000+ hours. Not only do UAP offer an industry first lifetime coating guarantee on all Nanocoast® products, and you can have confidence that the products will not pit, rust or corrode no matter what environments you put them in, the products are also extremely competitively priced.

You may wonder why UAP have taken the decision to use 304 grade stainless steel, instead of 200 grade or 316 grade stainless steel which some competitors use. As Ben Jennings, Marketing Manager at UAP, explains, “the reason for us using 304 grade stainless steel is simple - it gives the products the best corrosion resistant without being too expensive. The 304 grade is an austenitic stainless steel which contains 18% chromium and 8%

nickel, and has low carbon content, giving excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments, and good resistance to oxidation. It is this 8% nickel content which gives the corrosion resistance at the coast.”

“Downgrading the stainless steel quality to a 200 series grade stainless steel means that even though they have similar mechanical and physical properties to the 304 grade, there is decreased nickel content. The nickel is replaced by manganese which results in weak corrosion resistance, and high carbon content leaves the stainless steel susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. On the other hand, the 316 series grade would dramatically increase the prices of the products even though the corrosion resistance only

slightly increases, with a nickel content of 10%. 316 it shares similar characteristics to 304 grade stainless steel in resistance to oxidation and durability, and you would usually use 316 when you need a higher resistance to solutions such as sulfuric acid and chlorides at high temperatures. In this sense, you can see why it seemed illogical not to use the 304 grade to produce our products.”

Ben continues, “So far, we have released three fully suited colour match ranges into our Nanocoast® range; Mirror Polished Stainless Steel, PVD Gold and Satin Stainless Steel. The range includes door knockers, door viewers, letterplates, door handles, numerals, hinges, letterplate shrouds, identity slots, and our newly introduced pull handles and round door knobs.”

Nanocoast® products provide you with true quality, and the competitive prices make them exceptional value for money. Why take the risk with other products which have the potential to rust.

Recently, UAP Ltd have extended their Window Restrictor range by adding Fixed End Window Restrictors. These window restrictors are ideal for anyone that offers door and window security in their shop. Their design means that they cannot be unlocked by a user, making them ideal to be used in hospitals, schools, mental institutions and hotels, and for times when you what to make sure that the window will not be fully opened. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROPSA), over 4,000 children in the UK fall out of windows and injure themselves each year.

These are not only babies, but are children up to 15 years. This just emphasises how important window restrictors are in the home and are a great way to take child safety measures. Consumers are constantly looking for devices to help protect children, and the fixed end window restrictor is a perfect

opportunity to make additional sales, especially if you already sell into places such as nurseries and schools.

Ben Jennings, Marketing Manager at UAP Ltd, says, “Our Fixed End Window Restrictors are more durable and effective than other restrictors on the market. They can withstand over 100kg of weight as opposed to the industry standard of 50kg of force.”

The cable on the window restrictor is 20cm in length, and allows a window to open up to 10cm. This means that rooms can safely be aired, without the possibility of the window being pushed out any further.

Not only will this protect your customer’s pets and children from falling from the window, but they are an adding window security device as the cable is made from hardened steel and very difficult to cut, as thus prevents intruders from gaining entry

via the most common burglary method, the window.

Ben continues, “In order to allow consumers to colour match their window restrictors to their window handles and other furniture, we have launched our Fixed End Window restrictors in six different finishes! This includes White with a white cable, Brown with a brown cable, Black with a black cable, PVD Gold with a black cable, Chrome with a black cable, and Chrome with a transparent cable.

GLASS & GLAZING INDUSTRY GLASS & GLAZING INDUSTRY Friends and family are no longer the top source of information for buyers of windows and doors finds new consumer research carried out by Swish Window and Door Systems. “We believe this is the first time that websites, search engines and social media has taken the top spot from asking our nearest and dearest,” says Jon Skinner, Joint Managing Director for Swish Window and Door Systems who funded the extensive research. “The gap is likely to widen as more information is made available online. With family and friends

backing up research already done on the internet.

“We asked what sources respondents would use to get information about windows. The three top answers were 67 percent of people research online, while 59 percent ask

friends and family. 40 percent of those polled said they used the installer as an expert for information. Adverts on TV, radio and magazines were also given as a source of information, but are much less important.”

Investing in the research is part of its commitment to supporting Swish authorised installers. Working alongside a research specialist we carried out an extensive programme with a combination of in-depth interviewing, focus groups and high volume research to show trends.

“This results from the research is vital for our investment in the high profile Swish windows and doors product brand. GLASSTEC

GLASS & GLAZING

This month we see the biggest show on earth for glass and glass processing being held in Düsseldorf, Germany and with the latest topics being discussed by the leading lights of the sector.

THe fuTure Of gLaSS in cOMing yearS

Glass Technology Live (GTL) in Hall 11, is organised by Professor Stefan Behling and his team at the Institute for Building Construction at the University of Stuttgart, and is one of glasstec’s marquee events and always draws huge crowds.

Products about to emerge in coming years are on display here, usually including the highlights from the various fields of application, and always with a focus on architecture. For example, one of the eye-catchers from the 2012 Facade and Construction theme was a window integrated into glazing without any visible framing.

In 2014, the highlighted themes at this special show, which covers about 2,500m2, will fall under the title Intelligent Glass and include the areas Intelligent Building Envelopes, Facade + Energy (Solar), Innovations in Glass, and Glass Design.

Consequently, some of the innovative exhibits awaiting visitors will represent sectors such as light directing, translucent glazing, composite elements in facades, glass and OLEDs as well as light and thin glass for architecture and displays.

cuTTing eDge TOPicS

A high calibre trade symposium will accompany Glass Technology Live.

Embedded right in the exhibition space, a series of lectures on cutting edge topics will be presented there. All trade

fair visitors may attend this event free of charge.

Recognised presenters from leading research institutes, associations, companies and architecture firms will discuss in-depth a range of topics. Just like the special show, the symposium will hone in on the future of the glass industry.

The Symposium programme will be dedicated to a different theme on each day of the trade fair.

cOncenTraTeD infOrMaTiOn

Directly adjacent to Glass Technology Live, glasstec visitors will find the Façade Center, featuring glass focused content geared toward facade designers, construction engineers, architects and the glass processing trades.

It consists of exhibitor presentations in Hall 11, innovative facade mockups at the nearby GTL special show and the Professional Center Glass + Facade, which offers information presented by institutes and associations.

A new component of the Facade Center

will be European Facade Network’s efnMobile [sic] where students – along with the University of Applied Sciences in East Westphalia-Lippe – will create facade models live and offer facade consulting.

arcHiTecTure cOngreSS

Thanks to its broad range of glass products for use in architecture, glasstec attracts a large number of architects and building designers.

In addition, the supporting programme caters to this target audience by offering the Architecture Congress sponsored by the partners, Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen (Chamber of Architecture of North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Technical University Delft, as well as by Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences.

Architects, structural engineers, climate engineers and facade designers will meet at the Congress Center East (CCD Ost) of the Düsseldorf Exhibition Centre on 22 October, the second day of the trade fair. The title of this year’s Congress is Glass 5.0 – Design, Function, and Emotion.

Presenters will include renowned architects, e.g. Graham Dodd/Arup Fellow, Winy Maas/MVRDV and Paolo Cruz/University of Minho. The event is certified as professional continuing education (AKNW – 4 lessons for architects and interior designers, IK-Bau NRW – 4 time units). The admission fee is €49 and includes a glasstec ticket for two days.

ScienTific cOnference

The science and technology oriented ‘engineered transparency’ conference specifically addresses target audiences from the research and development as well as the construction and implementation communities.

The latest trends and developments in the structural use of glass will be discussed, which means the event will

GLASS & GLAZING

The recession may be fading but it damaged glasstec, the world’s biggest exhibition for glass and glass processing. Show Director, Birgit Horn, tells MyTradeTV Editor, Michael Gannon, why it is bouncing back. For any first time visitor from the UK to continental shows, the sheer scale of the exhibitions can be overwhelming. The second impression can be how advanced and sophisticated the products, systems and services are on display, manned by staff who never seem challenged by the numbers visiting, or from where they come from in the world.

Enormous stands are the order of the day, housed by massive halls that tend to go on and on. This is the image that was made on this trade editor when he made his first visit in 1998 and for the most part, this is as true now as it was then. glasstec takes place on 21-24 October in Dusseldorf, Germany, offering

professionals the latest developments in glass and glass processing with almost all the big players having an impressive presence.

There is no doubt that that the international recession had a bad impact on the event and when the Show Director, Birgit Horn, took over in 2009, the timing was an unfortunate one. Visitor numbers dropped and the exhibition contracted and the optimistic hopes for solarpeq – the solar part of glasstec – were dashed by the German government slashing the feed-in-tariffs rates; something the UK government followed.

These two factors left an obvious mark on how glasstec performed. “We had an industry that was not operating at anything like full capacity with government policies that did serious damage to a burgeoning solar industry that glasstec was representing and encouraging,” Birgit Horn told MYTTV.

Steps were taken in 2010 when the event was reduced by one day which may have partly accounted for the drop in attendance. Two years ago, glasstec was a success

in many ways but was having difficulties in keeping visitors figures up and 43,000 attended in that year.

Hopes for 2014 have reflected the state of play in the industry as it now finds itself.

Birgit Horn hopes to have as many visitors as last time and the exhibitors have remained at about the same number which was 1,162 in 2012. There is no solarpeq, which had some 100 exhibitors at its height but many will have solar systems on display.

Unlike many shows in the UK, glasstec is a truly international event – 66% of its exhibitors are from abroad and 62% of visitors arrive from outside Germany. The UK figures in the top 10 of both exhibitors and visitors to glasstec.

Another positive factor is the satisfaction levels with 95% of visitors saying they were ‘satisfied’ and most importantly, given the dire economic situation prevailing even in 2012, 94% stating they were likely to return.

Hoping this might occur is not good enough and Ms Horn acknowledges this. “Our team has been putting in lots of work to make glasstec more accessible. We know that a trade show is a knowledge platform and must give extra benefit to the visitors”.

Time has to be a crucial factor for any visitor, even though Dusseldorf is only one hour’s flight from London. The organisers have established an industry guide on its website – www.glasstec-online.com – and there is also a ‘trend compass’ that shows which exhibitors are displaying products and services connected with specific themes.

One example that Ms Horn pointed to was so-called ‘thin glass’ that is being developed to meet the expanding demand for triple glazing and its practical requirements.

glasstec has also been renowned for its additional events, especially its conferences and this year is no exception. The ‘Glass Technology Live’ special show has been organised by Professor Stefan Behling and his team from Stuttgart University.

With these and nine massive halls to visit, one day is hardly enough. “If you want to be successful, you have to take up to two days to get that additional insight into products and suppliers”, advised Ms Horn.

For further information, visit the website: www.glasstec-online.com.

MACO

It’s taken a lot of work and late nights to get the NFAs into the position they today. What started out as an online experiment has turned into one of the most talked about ongoing industry events this year. All thanks to support from most areas of the industry. These past few weeks have been an immensely proud time both for the whole NFA team and myself. We have all worked very hard, and continue to work hard, to make sure the whole experience with the NFAs is as simple and fun as possible. We don’t always get everything right, but we always work to improve anything we can. So to see so many of the finalists showing off their finalists logos all over their social media accounts, websites etc is a fantastic feeling for all of us. We have even had some tell us privately that they are adding the logos to their regular newsletters and literature.

Some of the numbers we’re getting are incredibly impressive. At the time of me writing this, we have passed the 900 registered users mark. These 900+ people have all either nominated, voted

or done both. Can any other industry awards claim to have such a massive level of engagement? It is also worth saying that the figure of 900 continues to rise on a daily basis. I expect that number to top the magical 1000 mark before too long.

I am also proud to say that the number of votes cast in this phase have already surpassed the total number of votes cast in the whole voting phase in 2013! We’re not sure what the final number will be yet, but we can sure that it will be impressive. Every single vote counts therefore and if you haven’t yet taken part, this is your chance to do so.

I don’t want to ramble on too much, so I think I’ll call it a day right here. I want to say a massive thanks to all those who have taken part in some way, thanks to the sponsors which help make this happen, thanks to all the magazines that have decided to cover the NFAs this year and a big thanks to the NFA team that continues to help build this revolution in how we reward the best in our industry.

To all the finalists, good luck!

The Liniar PVCu range is designed and extruded by HL Plastics in Derbyshire, the heart of the UK. Launched in 2008, the last six years have seen the Liniar system become one of the industry’s market leaders, due in no small part to its innovative approach to product design and development.Social media is a critically important part of Liniar’s marketing strategy as it enables us to reach out to, and engage with, followers of our brand on a personal level.

We try to aim for ‘fun with a serious intent’ – our Twitter feeds include corporate news such as our latest press releases, images from events we’re attending and latest product news, mixed in with humourous stuff we’ve seen, as well as conversational tweets with suppliers, customers and homeowners.

Having grown our Twitter followers from 300 to over 1,100 in less than a year, we’ve found it extremely valuable for responding quickly to requests for information and networking with people both within, and outside of, the fenestration industry.

One of our followers created the hashtag #LoveLiniar last year, which we like to use wherever possible!

Installers also love to show off their work on Twitter and we’ll always re-tweet a good photo, so it helps them to get exposure too. Our in-house testing robot, Mark II even has his own Twitter account (@Liniar_robot), and is proud to be followed by the creator of R2D2!

Video is also a big focus for us as it enables us to show people exactly why they should use Liniar; so we’d encourage

installers to subscribe to our YouTube channel to see installation and sales videos. We also use Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ to a lesser degree; we think it’s important in this day and age to have a presence on the main channels to make the brand more accessible to a wider audience and give people more opportunities to get in touch with us.

Being a finalist in the category ‘Composite and Panelled Doors 2014’ for the National Fenestration Awards 2014, is further testament to the passion and commitment that is within Britdoors Group. Who are Britdoors Group? We are a UK manufacturer who designs and manufacturers all types of doors, including glass-reinforced polyester (GRP), thermoplastic composite doors, timber core composite doors, fire doors and solid timber doors.

Over the past 20 years we have sold more than 2 million composite doors to customers within numerous

sectors, including Retail and Trade, Distributors, Affordable Housing, Housebuilder and Main Contractor. Established in 2012 by acquiring market leading, trusted brands Homesafe Doors, Securidor and JCK Joinery, we can cater for all your external and internal door needs.

We are amongst a small number of UK companies with; the choice of so many different door products, the capacity to manufacture customised doors in-house and intellectual property rights linked to key aspects of our products, including colour skins, flush-glazing and fixing features.

Why vote for Britdoors Group? It is rare to find a UK door manufacture which specialises in all sectors, nor one sole provider who can cater for all interior and external door needs. Britdoors Group is that small minority that stands out proudly in a crowded marketplace, able to cater for multiple project, door and client requirements. Due to these reasons we think that Britdoors Group is a worthy contender to win the category ‘Composite and Panelled Doors 2014’. We also want to give our customers the pride of being associated with award winning doors.

Clement are renowned for their innovative research and development programme, over the years the Group has been the vanguard of ideas in the steel window industry. In response to the new Part L Regulations that followed the Kyoto agreements, Clement EB24 system was the first residential steel window to provide elemental compliance to the new regulations.

Not content with achieving great thermal performance, the Clement team went on to design another first, that being the multi-point locking system providing compliance to BS7950.

The organisation continues to headline new product development and the Management ensure that a substantial budget is set aside every year for the improvement of their range of products.

Clement have a well-deserved reputation for supplying quality windows and doors. An example of this is the thickness of paint which is applied to

every window and door manufactured. The industry standard called for is 60 microns on all flat surfaces…Clement generally provide at least 100.

Not only are Clement steel windows beautiful with their elegant slim frames but they are also recognised for being incredibly environmentally friendly. All Clement steel windows and doors are made from recycled material and due to the sheer strength of hot dip galvanised steel the life expectancy is expected to be the same as the building that the windows are being fitted into!

The company has been manufacturing for 13 years, combining high grade aluminium with precision engineering, and has a proven track record in providing quality, functional and stylish products that are built to last.

The superiority of the Origin product is proven by an industry leading 20-year manufacturer’s guarantee and the fact that the company has been awarded the prestigious ISO 9001 certification for excelling in its operations as a result of its rigorous quality checking procedure.

Origin is continuously looking for new ways to support its trade partners, and has designed and developed a unique ‘Your Lead Time, Not Ours’ (YLTNO) service to completely remove lead times. In an industry where trade customers typically wait 6-8 weeks for delivery, they

can now dictate when they want the doors delivered.

Origin is the only company in the world to offer this service, which means it can manufacture and deliver high quality bespoke doors more quickly and efficiently than anyone else in the market. Not only this, but a 100 per cent record has been maintained for delivering this promise.

Origin also runs free product training for all of its trade agents to maintain high service levels, share product knowledge and best practice. Sales training run by Origin helps trade agents achieve a higher lead conversion rate, improve performance and grow their businesses.

Digital specialist The Consultancy has celebrated 10 years in the industry by launching its new mobile-responsive website. The company, which develops design software and websites specifically for the window and door industry, underwent their first re-brand earlier this year resulting in an image overhaul and new website.

Richie Thornton, Director of The Consultancy, said: “We are constantly striving to offer the best services and products for our clients, so much so we are sometimes guilty of forgetting our own brand in the process. We ensure every project for our customers is completed to the highest quality, which means our own work can be sometimes put on the backburner. It’s a bit of the cobblers’ shoes syndrome!

“With the new website and re-brand we really feel that less is more. We wanted to give The Consultancy a sleeker more simplified look, which would be instantly recognisable to our clients.”

The Consultancy has had a successful year; on top of a 30% increase in turnover, the company has expanded its premises and is currently recruiting new web developers.

Richie added: “With another successful year under our belts, we felt it was time to focus on our own image and how we could improve our brand.”

The website is currently experiencing a 20% increase in traffic with 70% of visits looking at the portfolio page.

Richie continued: “We have been getting great feedback from the website and hits on www.theconsultancy.co.uk

have been increasing month on month.”

Alongside being fully mobile-responsive the website now offers a portfolio of The Consultancy’s clients including its projects for Door-stop, Solidor and

Deceuninck. The site also includes a live blog which is regularly updated with news and events.

Richie, continued: “The blog is something we’ve really enjoyed doing, especially in the run up to the FIT Show, we’re hoping it will give our clients and readers the chance to see a bit more of what goes on behind the scenes and also learn more about our staff.”

Specialist bi-fold door hardware manufacturer and supplier, Debar has teamed up with Kaye Building Suppliers to push their products through to the commercial sector. KBS extrude and supply an innovative, fully integrated range of facade products for curtain walling, doors, windows and low rise glazing systems for commercial applications and decided to stock Debar product range because of their simplicity and ease of fabrication for their customers.

Derek Hodson, General Manager for KBS commented, “We decided to stock Debar hardware because of its straightforward use of fitting and also how it complements our own extruded system.

We take all Debars’ product range with the exception of the track and rollers, but only because we produce our own.”

Derek continues, “In the commercial sector, we can sometimes experience very complex applications and it has been fantastic to have Debar on-hand to offer us sound technical advice and support when we have needed it.”

Graham Fawthrop, Managing Director for Debar said, “We have been working closely with Kaye Building Supplies for a while and because of the relationship, we now consider the commercial sector more when reviewing our product’s technical development.”

Debar offer a wide range of bi-fold hardware products including a new heavier duty lock; Debar Robus Lock, a range of bespoke handles and

Synseal is launching the Performance Hardware range of window and door handles for exclusive use with the company’s Legend, Shield and SynerJy 70mm PVC-U systems. The new Performance Hardware range includes inline or cranked espag window handles with 20mm or 40mm pin lengths according to system use and lever/lever, lever/pad or inline lever/pad door handles, all available in a choice of 5 finishes: Polished Gold, Polished Chrome, Satin Silver, White and Black.

A unique Synseal decorative design with common features between the window and door handles creates a complete and matching suite of products. The Performance Hardware range has been meticulously tested to meet and exceed industry standards which is reflected in the guarantees on offer – a ten year mechanical guarantee as well as a five year coatings guarantee on plated finishes and a ten year guarantee on powder coated finishes.

The new range is high end quality in construction, designed and sourced by Synseal to ensure a competitive price point for fabricator customers and as large quantity stock levels are available at Synseal in all finishes and sizes, a robust

supply chain is always in place to deliver the products they need.

Synseal will continue to partner with some of the leading hardware suppliers in the country because they can offer customers a wide variety of hardware choices, some of which offer a recognised consumer brand. However, the new Performance Hardware range reflects Synseal’s ongoing strategy to provide a true one-stop-shop supply option for fabricator partners, which includes high quality insulated glass units from Global Glass and now a complete range of hardware options.

Mark Frain, Synseal’s Hardware Category Manager, is delighted to launch this new exclusive range: “Synseal consults with its fabricator partners on a regular basis and the issue of differentiation in hardware is something we have been discussing with them for a while. Our customers understandably want products no-one else has access to at a price that allows them to remain competitive, without any compromise on quality. The devil is always in the detail and after many months of hard work and a rigorous testing programme we have now developed the ultimate solution – the Performance Hardware range.”

“Synseal fabricators that want to be able to offer something completely different to the fabricator down the road can now choose Synseal’s Performance Hardware range, safe in the knowledge that manufacturers using other profile systems won’t be able to follow in their footsteps,” continues Mark. “It’s not often that you can say you genuinely have something completely different to offer your customers which makes sound business sense, but it is pleasing to announce that we are now in that enviable commercial position.”

The Philip Morant School and College in Colchester, Essex, is using transom door closers from Alpro Architectural Hardware. The school is a high achieving 11- 18 academy that was rated as ‘outstanding’ in its last Ofsted inspection. The Alpro closers have been fitted on doors manufactured by Essex-based IDF Aluminium Ltd. Major works at the school have seen the creation of a vestibule, a 715 square-metre steel tapered trellis canopy and a new main entrance between two existing buildings using curtain walling. A space which had previously served only as a route between buildings has become an integral part of student activities.

Alpro’s overhead transom closers used on the school doors are a means of hydraulically controlling the opening and closing of an aluminium door. Features include dual closing speed to allow

flexibility, three levels of spring strength and 90-degree hold open facility. Builders and glaziers benefit from the ability to adjust the latching and closing force according to the weight and height of individual doors as well as type of usage. Fine-tuning to accommodate the exact needs of a pupil and staff user base is all-important in a school application.

Transom closers are contained within the transom header bar of a door. They are therefore well suited to use in premises where attention is being paid to aesthetics as is the case at Colchester where the current works will see the canopy feature a screen-printed gable end fabric designed by the school’s art teacher. Philip Morant School and College is also using door handles from Alpro’s Impressionist range which are manufactured from 304-grade stainless steel and are specified widely for their functionality and visual appeal, in this case complementing the school’s dark green livery.

Keith Parry, Sales Director at Alpro, said: “Our transom closers are designed

for durability and have been tested independently at 250,000 double-action cycles. They have been used at the universities of London, Portsmouth and Liverpool, and we’re pleased to have extended our work now into secondary education.”

IDF Aluminium specialise in the design, manufacture and installation of aluminium doors. The door solutions are designed for use in commercial and public sector environments where usage may be high but maintenance costs must be minimised.

The company has 30 years’ experience in the shop front and commercial door market. IDF Aluminium ensure a quality service by designing and fabricating all of their doors and shop fronts in-house with no use of sub-contractors. The client portfolio covers transport, local government, healthcare and education from schools through to universities.

Hardware distributer VBH is reporting great successes with the greenteQ stainless steel pull handle series. The range was developed by VBH head office in Germany, where doors are commonly fitted with key operated (wind-up) locks and pull handles have long been used in place of a lever handle set.VBH (GB) invested in stock in January this year and can now deliver most of the nine basic designs from their main Kent warehouse. All greenteQ Pull Handles are manufactured from hard wearing 1.4301 austenitic stainless steel (grade 304-A2), which provides good resistance to weather- and pollution-associated corrosion. There are options of 90° or 45° projection, and with standard or extended legs.

VBH advise that, depending on the design selected, the handles are available

from 300mm–1800mm high and can be used either singularly or in pairs on many door materials including composite, PVCu, timber, aluminium and glass.

More door manufacturers than ever are offering their customers more choice in terms of door style and operation in a bid to differentiate their products from the norm, thus achieving a higher value sale. This in turn leads to further options of locking system and furniture. Where pull handles were once the preserve of

commercial doors they are now being specified on many domestic installations in the UK and Ireland.

VBH Area Sales Manager Jan Zammit states ‘It’s important for anyone involved in sales to be provided with a steady stream of top quality, competitively priced products that are available from stock. We’re extremely lucky at VBH (GB) that not only do we have our own greenteQ products that have been developed specifically for the UK and Irish markets, but there is also a huge range of products developed by our colleagues in Germany that we can bring into our market. The stainless steel pulls are a prime example of this and are proving a huge success with my customers.’

The greenteQ Pull Handle series features in the latest greenteQ and VBH PVCu catalogues which can be requested by calling VBH Sales on 01634 263300. Alternatively, the catalogues can be downloaded from www.vbhgb.com.

The German greenteQ range can be explored at www.greenteq.info.

Avocet Hardware says its recent distribution deal with Duffells will “delight mobile locksmiths and installers alike”. The addition of Duffells, one of the UKs leading distributors of locks, as an Avocet distributor, means that minimum orders on its ABS snap-secure locks are no longer required and that any orders placed prior to 6pm will be delivered the very next day. Furthermore, the partnership will lead to free delivery on all orders over £100.

Raymond Pearce, Avocet’s head of sales for its ABS range, said: “No matter how good your product, your marketing or your sales team, everything is reliant on distribution. Good distribution can make a company, while bad distribution will quickly ruin reputations”

“Ever since the Jain family rescued Avocet in 2012 everything has been geared towards returning the company to the pinnacle of the market and cementing its position there.”

In order to achieve this, the Jain family have invested heavily in Avocet, in particular in stock levels and warehouse facilities, while seeking to strike up distribution deals that strengthen its penetration across the UK.

“Securing a long term partnership with Duffells has been a priority since day one and we are looking forward to working together to ensure our distribution differentiates us from the competition in the same way that the quality of our ABS snap-secure lock already does,” added Raymond.

Initially, the distribution partnership will see Duffells stock and sell Avocet’s ABS snap-secure lock, which is the only retrofit product on the UK market that meets both BSI’s TS007 3-star rating and Sold Secures SS312 Diamond accreditation.

Alex Kuness, a director at Duffells, added: “This is a great partnership for us. ABS is proven to be the best retrofit Euro cylinder lock on the market, and when you combine that with the levels of stock

Avocet has available I am certain demand will be huge – especially when you consider so many other manufacturers are struggling to get stock in.”

“On top of that, the removal of a minimum order level means locksmiths can order any amount they need and know, no matter where in the country they are, that the product will be delivered the very next day.”

For additional information on Avocet Hardware and its ABS snap-secure lock visit www.avocet-hardware.co.uk or call 01484 725601.

The Liniar design team have re-written the rule book with their innovative patio range – engineering in features such as a built-in decelerator and ModLok™, the patented Liniar Multi Point Lock to name but a few. Offering homeowners reassurance, the multi point lock is Yale branded and comes with a 10 year mechanical warranty. The Liniar patio door is a real stand out product. It has an effortless opening mechanism and thanks to the revolutionary multi-wheeled ‘air glide’ system, the Liniar sliding patio door feels like its floating on air.

The patio door range can achieve a U value of 1.3 W/m2K when fitted with a double glazed unit, and can be triple glazed for those high spec installations. You’ll be able to enjoy a warmer and quieter home as well as lower energy bills.

The latest innovation to the range is the thermally broken aluminium low-threshold option. It creates a seamless entrance and exit, complete with an integral ramp it is ideal for family homes or where wheelchair access is required.

Ultra-low, the Liniar threshold measures just 24mm at its highest point, with a gold or silver hard wearing anodised finish, which perfectly complements the door hardware. Tested to the requirements of Part M the thermally broken low threshold improves the overall thermal performance for the full perimeter of the door.

It can be used on 2, 3 or 4 pane patios and is suitable for use on restricted access sites via a mechanical joint assembly.

GLASS & GLAZING

Composite doors are big news. According to recent reports they are one of the key growth areas in the installer market, alongside double-glazing, and foiled finishes and colours. And with the UK economy buoyed by a rapidly improving housing market and falling rates of inflation, it’s a fair assumption that composite doors will continue to demand attention from all quarters – no more so than from hardware manufacturers. My Trade TV spoke to Christopher Burrows, head of UK sales at Avocet Hardware, to find out what they’re doing to ensure their product offering matches market demand.

“The thing to remember about the rise and rise of composite doors is that it’s not unexpected. Like the vast majority of new developments in this sector, they were introduced, and have grown slowly, but steadily, over a number of years before achieving the prominence they enjoy today.

This process has happened time and again across a range of different products, and is currently happening with triple glazing, which is at the early stages of the development cycle here in the UK. What this means to us as hardware manufacturers is that we have time to get prepared – either through the adaption of existing products or the development of new ones.

Take our 3D butt hinge as an example. It is PAS024 compliant, has Secured by Design approval, can hold up to 150kg on three hinges, is available in a huge range of colours, which means there truly is an option for every interior, and, of course, doesn’t require face fixed flag fixings.

It’s also the only truly active 3D butt hinge available for composite doors in the UK, and it can be actively adjusted in

three dimensions without needing to reset the door position. And because the product is so simple to adjust the only tool an installer will need is an Allen key.

Of course, me telling you how great the hinge is is one thing, but it always sounds better coming from someone impartial – so here’s what Daryl Cashmore, operations director of Nationwide Windows recently said about the hinge: “We’ve been using Avocet’s 3D hinge for close to two years and in that time not one of our installers has had a bad word to say about it. Meanwhile many of our supply only clients have been quick to praise the level and ease of adjustment, highlighting it as a real benefit. Put simply, the 3D hinge is the best and easiest to use on the market.”

To say we’re proud of the 3D hinge would be an understatement of massive proportions. It is though important to note that it’s only one element of the Avocet Composite Door Hardware Package – a suite of high quality, Secured by Design approved products that have been developed specifically to meet the growing demand for composite doors.

Other products in the package, include Affinity door handles, Affinity face fit door knockers, Affinity letter plates, and the ABS snap secure cylinder lock – the only retrofit lock on the market with Sold Secure’s Diamond stand and the TS007 3-star kitemark. And such is our confidence in them, the package is offered with a £2,000 security guarantee, which means that if a break-in occurs as a direct result of one of our products being at fault then we’ll provide £1,000 to replace the door and £1,000 in compensation to the homeowner.

When it comes to composite doors, it’s fair to say we are the cub scouts of the industry in terms of being prepared. And you can guarantee that when triple glazing reaches its potential we’ll have the products and distribution in place to ensure we are ready for that as well.

Hardware supplier VBH has added monkey tail espag handles and dummy casement stays to the greenteQ range of door and window furniture.VBH advise that greenteQ’s Monkey Tail has been designed specifically as an espagnolette handle, rather than modified from an existing casement fastener and that window manufacturers and end-users receive a number of benefits as a result.

To eliminate the unsightly machining marks associated with the modification of casement fasteners, the backplate is a bespoke precision cast component. This also provides the product consistency necessary for modern window production lines. The handle’s ‘Lift to Turn’ function prevents handle droop on top hung sashes and guards against external manipulation. Full key locking is provided by the working cylinder.

To complement the Monkey Tail handle, there is also a non-handed greenteQ Monkey Tail Dummy Casement Stay. This is a purely decorative item that fits to the bottom of the opening

sash to replicate a casement stay and peg, thus completing the ‘traditional illusion’.

Gary Gleeson of VBH commented ‘Everyone appreciates the comfort and benefits of high performance modern windows with their thermal efficiency and security features. However, many end users desire a traditional appearance to windows that current contemporary handles cannot provide. The answer to this is the greenteQ Monkey Tail espagnolette handle, which works with the latest security espagnolettes and shootbolts and is an ideal product to fit to timber and the decorative and coloured PVCu windows that are so popular now.’

Both the handle and stay are finished in hard wearing Antique Black powder coat and are covered by the 10 year greenteQ guarantee.

“If you mention lock-snapping in conversation, the chances are the vast majority of people will know what you’re talking about. What’s more worrying is that an ever increasing number of people now know someone directly affected by it.

But the most worrying aspect of all is that when you tell people the hard facts about lock-snapping, every last one of them will be left shocked and stunned. And that’s because the facts make extremely unpleasant reading.

Today, millions of homes across the UK are at risk of lock-snapping attack because the Euro cylinder lock that is fitted as standard on all uPVC and double glazed doors can be snapped in a matter of seconds.

And to give you an idea of the extent of the problem, many police forces freely state that over 50 per cent of all break-ins can be attributed to lock-snapping.

When you realise the scale of the problem you would think that everybody in a position to do something about it would be reading from the same song sheet and making sure everything that possibly could be done to stamp it out, would be. Shockingly, they’re not.

• Insurance companies still insist on replacing snapped locks with like-for-like products, a practice that puts burgled homes back at risk

• A host of lock manufacturers confuse the picture by claiming their products are snap-proof or snap-secure when tests categorically show they aren’t

• Numerous products boasting the British Standards Institute’s TS007 3-star certification for snap-secure locks – a standard that is meant to provide peace of mind – have been proven unable to withstand a lock-snapping attack carried out using tools that can be purchased freely and cheaply on Amazon.

When you lay out the facts like this they truly are scandalous.

And that’s before you take into account that national TV programmes like This Morning have broadcast incorrect information about lock-snapping and how to stop it as fact.

One of the main reasons for the shocking situation we find ourselves in, and the lack of anything resembling a cohesive plan to turn things around, is that lock-snapping has long been seen as a geographical problem, with certain areas affected more than others. The argument being put forward that publicising the issue will only exacerbate the problem across the entire country.

But I can’t think of one person who would prefer to be kept in the dark about a security aspect of their home that is in fact a major security risk.

Thankfully certain elements of the media are slowly coming round to this way of thinking, with the BBC’s Watchdog Test House and Crimewatch Roadshow recently airing informative pieces on lock-snapping.

Incredibly there is a solution, but for some reason it hasn’t been welcomed with open arms, which when you consider everybody is aware of it is perhaps the most unbelievable aspect of the whole lock-snapping debacle.

Sold Secure was established by Northumbria and Essex police in 1992 and given Home Office backing. Its aim was simple – to reduce the risk of crime through the assessment of security products. Today it is administered by the Master Locksmiths Association (MLA) and amongst its various standards is SS312 Diamond accreditation.

This is the most robust testing process on the market and is continually updated. If a lock carries this standard it is snap-secure. And what’s more, manufacturers have to resubmit their products for testing every 12-months to ensure they can be tested against the latest lock-snapping techniques.

If everyone took this on-board and advertised the fact then lock-snappers would quickly be stopped in their tracks, a move that would make homes across Britain far more secure.”

Mark Davies of Mirfield having his locks upgrade by Andy Townend of Doortique Limited (r) and Sean Hellawell of Huddersfield Lock & Key (l).

Home security is high on most people’s agendas, but unbeknown to many, millions of UK homes are at risk because of a serious deficiency in a product we all see as providing a barrier between burglars and our possessions – the trusty old lock. Raymond Pearce, technical and operations manager for Avocet Hardware, talks to MyTrade TV about the fight against lock-snapping.

On Saturday 22nd March, Mark Davies and his long-time girlfriend, Ruth Harrison went out for a romantic meal at their favourite restaurant, but when they returned to their West Yorkshire home they found their locks had been snapped and Ruth’s most prized possession, a Mini Cooper that matched her hair colour, had been stolen from their driveway.

And to rub salt into the wound, Mark’s insurance company stated that it would only replace the snapped locks with like-for-like replacements – meaning his and Ruth’s home would be left as at risk as it was before the burglary.

“What really irritates me is that had we known our locks were at risk of being snapped so easily then there is absolutely no doubt we would have upgraded them a long time ago,” said Mark.

“But it wasn’t until Avocet Hardware read our story in the local paper and contacted us to offer a free upgrade to their ABS snap secure locks that we did some research. We were absolutely staggered to find out about the scale of the lock-snapping problem and the fact it is something that the British public isn’t fully aware of.”

“Everyone from the police to the media and right through to the insurance companies, who are simply replacing snapped locks with like-for-like replacements, should take it on themselves to inform the British public of the danger and let everyone decide for themselves if they want to take steps to properly secure their homes.”

“I, for one, am extremely angry that it took our home being burgled and our possessions stolen for us to find out the truth about lock-snapping.”

Raymond Pearce of Avocet added: “Like Mark says, everyone needs to pull together, and this should start with insurance companies who need to provide incentives for those upgrading their doors to snap-secure solutions or, at the very least, ensure homes that have been broken into have at-risk entry points upgraded to a suitable standard of lock.”

Avocet Hardware was recently announced as NHWN’s primary sponsor for security products for 2014 / 2015 – a partnership aimed at helping secure local communities through a process of education, promotion and incentivisation.

The company also manufactures the ABS snap-secure lock, which has Sold Secure’s SS312 Diamond accreditation. For additional information visit www.homesecurityandsafety.co.uk or call 01484 725601.

The MACO AR App developed over the course of a year in the lead up to FiT 2014 really has started to change the way in which we look at the world of door locks. We are also incredibly proud to announce that it is also finalist for a very prestigious technology award! The App is downloadable from the Apple App store or for Android users, Google Play store with Windows 8 users now included.

The whole thinking behind the App was along the lines of ‘How do we help our Fabricators and Installers grow their business?’ Educating the homeowner came up time and time again. Rather than just choosing a gorgeous colour door with matching handles, how to we get them to think properly about what’s going on inside the door, what makes it secure, weather tight, how can they ensure it lasts a lifetime and is still operating trouble free for years to come. How do we guarantee that the products used are approved by their home insurance companies and that they have Police Approved hardware for additional peace of mind and how do we begin to create brand loyalty, how do we get them to come back for more or recommend the installer to others?

We want you to get as excited as us with regards to the possibilities the AR App opens up. Every MACO user is encouraged to download and use it as much as possible. Imagine taking this handy tool into the homeowner and leaving it with them to explore whilst carrying out the survey. Let them view the 3D graphics, watch the HD videos and read the news on this simple to use App. Encourage them to download it too so that they can view again at their leisure, perhaps showing

friends and relatives which in turn could mean more business through recommendations.

Used alongside current sales aids we see this MACO AR App as a powerful tool. Not forgetting that this smart App also allows you to download and replay the content on own showroom media or at trade counters.

In fact due to its growing supporters so far, MACO has just reordered another 3 pallets of presentation boxes to distribute to anyone wanting to use the App within their business.

We already see our Distributor partners issuing copies to their sales teams to show the features and benefits of our locks. We have Fabricators using the content in their showrooms and we have Installers using it alongside the MACO Secure Plus scheme to sell the benefits of our products within their installations.

‘’I know that many months were spent on the creation of the app, especially all those 3D features, and it is clear to see that hard work. Is it useful and is it worth including in future demonstrations? Yes. It serves a purpose and it is that which makes anything in this world valuable, having a purpose. Hats off to the guys at MACO who worked on this, it’s a great effort!’’ – GlazingBlogger

Feedback has been very encouraging and so positive that we are already working on the next chapter for the MACO AR App.

Presentations by MACO to sales forces, Installer networks or on a one to one are welcomed, please contact us to arrange a suitable date and time.

WINDOWS

One of the UK’s longest-standing VEKA fabricators has undergone a dramatic rebranding, better reflecting its focus on window projects as opposed to general building contracts.

The original company, based on Borough Road in Darwen, had traded for over 40 years and worked with VEKA for almost 30. Now named Darwen Windows, the team is keen to continue offering the same level of quality, service and fast turnarounds that first established its success.

MD, Bill Ainsworth, explains: “We’re excited to have unveiled a brand new website that guides visitors through the range of work Darwen Windows undertakes.

Whether it’s doors, windows, a conservatory, or all three, customers can be confident of our experience and expertise, especially after checking out the photos of completed work on our new Facebook and Twitter profiles.”

“The new logo’s great and really reflects the streamlining that’s taken place within

the company. Of course, our offering to customers will maintain the same high standards we’ve always upheld, and we look forward to welcoming new business under the umbrella of Darwen Windows.”

Bill recalls working with VEKA since the early 1980s, when profile was still imported from Germany prior to advent of the Burnley plant.

“We look forward to continuing what must be one of the longest relationships with VEKA of any UK fabricator, as we know that our customers appreciate the levels of quality and service available.”

“With a name like VEKA behind you, the opportunity to grow your business is always there – and we certainly have aspirations for expansion.”

Contact Darwen Windows on 01254 706 101 and check out their new website at www.darwenwindows.co.uk.

New from market-leader Schueco UK Ltd is AWS 70 SC, an insulated, outward-opening window that delivers Schueco ‘build quality’ at an economical price, providing a perfect solution for new and replacement windows in houses and apartments, light commercial buildings, local authority properties, schools and clinics. With a depth of 70 mm, slim sightlines from 63.5 mm (outer frame/vent) and a choice of five vent profiles offering optimum cost/size/weight options, Schueco AWS 70 SC is ideal for the fenestration in punched openings, ribbon windows and curtain walling.

The system can accommodate double- or triple-glazed units and achieves a typical ‘U’ value of 1.5 W/m2K with 1.0 W/m2K glazing units, which makes it compliant with Document L. In addition, a WER up to ‘A’ is an option.

There is a choice of standard or heavy-duty stainless-steel friction hinges, together with multipoint locking for large vents. The window has opening limiters and its PAS 24 rating means that it offers a high level of security.

Importantly, the window’s versatility in use is matched by the ease with which it can be fabricated. Using only the minimum number of profiles, it is possible to manufacture a wide variety of sightlines, sizes and weights from slim-line to heavy-duty.

Profiles can be pre-rolled or customer-rolled and Schueco’s tried-and-tested T-cleat and corner technology ensures strong joints that will last. Corner joints, which may be crimped or nailed, further benefit from a special metal adhesive.

There is a projecting sill option and profiles may be specified with different colours on the inside and outside faces. 90o and variable-angle connections mean bay windows can be easily accommodated and the system is also fully compatible with Schueco ADS 70 doors.

Hinges precision-fix to profiles obviating the use of packers, while ISR stainless-steel fabrication screws combined with profile location points in all hardware components, result in increased throughput and pin-point accuracy every time.

The 2014 conference for Everglade Windows on 18 September kicked off with how customers can make more money as we come out of recession. “It’s easy to think that being busy is always a good thing,” explains Everglade Windows’ Sales Director Jay Patel. “But making the most of these new opportunities is important.“We know it’s a combination of choosing the right product mix and using the latest marketing tools that helps customers win more business and make more profit. So we set out to cover a wide range of topics at our recent customer conference.

“Customers take a day out from their businesses to attend the conference so we tackle issues that make a real difference to them. While it is good news that the economy has turned a corner, this upturn can bring other stresses and strains on businesses. As sales rise so can snags and outstanding monies, and that can squeeze cash flow. Historically it’s a time where companies can falter, so discussing potential strategies to avoid the pitfalls is useful for businesses looking to stay ahead.

Everglade Windows is the longest standing Kommerling fabricator in the South East. At the conference it demonstrated how companies can add margin with its new high specification for PVCu. It has enhanced security through Everguard hinge protection. The video showed the enhanced security Everglade PVCu window outperforming the most stringent security test PAS 24 by almost twice the standard requirements. There’s a bigger range of colours in shorter lead times. AluStar, the new aluminium clad system for Kommerling’s PVCu windows was also launched, giving all the benefits of PVCu with an external aluminium finish.

The conference took place in the aïrzone at Everglade Windows HQ. It has six full sized high performance lift and slide and bi-fold aïr doors. This was the first time some customers had seen them up close and they were impressed by the style and engineering.

“Added support with Window Designer’s online ordering system for aluminium was also demonstrated,” says Jay. “We are one of the first fabricators to offer this for aluminium and there was a lot of interest at the demonstration.”

As always Sailesh rounded off the seminar with a trip through changes in

Health and Safety. Keeping customers ahead of new legislation always proves to be a popular component of the annual conference.

Fifty customers joined the Everglade Windows’ team for the afternoon event. After the seminar customers were able to talk to suppliers including Kommerling, Solidor, GT Products and Balls2 Marketing.

As people were talking, the aïrzone was transformed into a dining room and the fantastic Everglade Windows’ hospitality was on display. The highly successful day ended with customers, invited guests and the Everglade team sharing a delicious buffet of Indian food.

One way to ensure your product sells well is to ensure that it meets a need that has yet to be fulfilled. It’s an approach that Bison Frames used when developing its Genesis vertical slider and as sales and growing awareness of what it has to offer prove, it’s more than paid off.

Mark Tetley of Bison explains more. “The accepted wisdom in the industry is that listed buildings and properties in conservation zones are out of bounds for PVC-U windows. We always thought that was very unfair – both for us as an industry and for homeowners looking to invest in the most thermally efficient and low maintenance windows they can. So when we were approached by a customer wanting them to develop a PVC-U vertical slider they could use in their Grade II

listed property, we were more than happy to accept the challenge.”

The resulting product is the Genesis vertical slider. It was developed using rapid prototyping following extensive input from the planning officer involved in the building project to ensure that it met all his requirements. It uses traditional timber jointing methods rather than the usual 45 degree PVC-U welds and has a low sheen finish to meet the planning officer’s requirements. There is a deep bottom rail, run-through sash horns and an optional Georgian Astragal bar. The window has period look high security cam locks and sash buttons and comes in a complete range of authentic woodgrain and heritage coloured foil options.

Proof that the window meets the need was evident almost immediately – the Genesis was accepted for use in the

Grade II listed building that had started the project.

Mark concludes, “The fact that the Genesis was accepted for use in the original building as well as numerous further buildings is proof that the market was waiting for a product like this. We’re delighted to be fulfilling the need!”

Newton Abbot based Fab Frames Ltd are the latest trade fabricator to take on board the Solidor slab, as they look to promote the merits of a better composite door to their customer network in the South West of the country.Having previously bought in imported GRP/paint finished doors, Mike Taylor and the team at Fab Frames were being increasingly asked for a Solidor composite door and felt that they had to response to overwhelming customer demand. Just seven months on and the company have now grown sales to 60 door slabs per month, harnessing the 17 different colours and woodgrains inside and out, among other key product features.

Fab Frames was established in 1998 and is one of the largest trade frame manufacturers in the South West, manufacturing 500 frames a week with

a customer focused attitude and ability to offer enhanced levels of support both on-site and through their customer support function. Composite doors have now become their fastest growing product range thanks to Solidor and they have recently added the interactive Door Designer facility to their website at www.fabframes.net to further continue the momentum.

Mike Taylor, managing director of Fab Frames commented: ‘The decision to change to Solidor was an easy one given the number of requests from our customers. Just 7 months on and our decision has been vindicated as the product is superb as is every element of support that we get from them and subsequently, our sales growth has been incredible.’

Lee Williams, sales director of Solidor concludes: ‘Fab Frames is an important customer for us and strategically supports the South West region. It’s now clear that both consumers and trade customers are asking for a Solidor by

name and with good with good reason, we have so many USP’s that other door companies simply can’t match.’

Solidor have just launched Solidor TV on their consumer-facing website, with three videos covering security, the ‘Sounds Like a Solidor’ campaign and the recent ‘Solidor’s 7 Step Journey’, showing the process from enquiry through to installation. The TV channel within the website is also supported with the company’s very own YouTube channel at www.youtube.com/user/SolidorLtd, where there’s also an additional video showing the unique composition of their solid hardwood core based composite doors. The videos have been proving to be particularly popular for both installation companies and consumers alike, helping to further highlight the many and unique features that set their composite doors apart.

The security video shows a determined thief attempting to break in through a Solidor front door and giving up after 2

minutes unable to break the lock, get past the hinges, nor get through the solid timber core. The ‘Sounds Like a Solidor’ video goes on to take you through the full manufacturing process, detailing key product features and highlighting all the Quality Management processes on the way.

The latest ‘Solidor’s 7 Step Journey’ video takes consumers through the ordering process from the Solidor website through to online design, installer visit, measurement and survey, quote, manufacture and finally to installation. It’s re-assuring video for consumers helping them understand what happens throughout the sales, manufacturing and installation process.

Gareth Mobley, managing director of Solidor Group comments: ‘It’s important for us to continue to market our unique products in innovative and engaging ways. Consumers are now asking for a Solidor by name, testament to our brand and highly regarded product design.’

Distinction Doors, the UK’s leading supplier of GRP composite doors, has just announced a partnership with The Folding Sliding Door Company, who utilise the Fold N Slide hardware range, to offer fabricators and installers a unique GRP composite bi-fold door package.Distinction Doors’ Marketing Manager Chantel Roach says, “The combination of the quality and innovation of our One Lite bi-fold door plus the quality of the overall package is very exciting and we are delighted to be launching it onto the market.”

As Chantel says, Distinction’s One Lite GRP composite bi-fold door offers outstanding quality and innovation. This is particularly evident in the door’s track. It uses an inline, out of sight system with concealed running gear. This makes it water-resistant as well as incredibly resistant to attack – the door meets BS 6375 standards and is PAS24 proven. What’s more, the door’s tracking uses stainless steel with sealed bearings for maintenance-free, trouble-free use, eliminating the operational quirks often associated with lesser bi-fold doors.

One Lite is available in white and a variety of wood stain options with future plans to offer buff/buff or buff/white for

customers choosing to finish and manufacture the doors themselves.

The bi-fold door sets will be manufactured by Distinction’s project partner The Folding Sliding Door Company and will be delivered in kit form (pre-prepped and ready-made) direct to the customer

for easy assembly/installation on-site. Chantel says, “We know from our longstanding relationship with The Folding Sliding Door Company that the team has the same commitment to quality as we do and we’re delighted that they will be responsible for manufacturing and supplying this product offering.”

The addition of GRP composite bi-fold doors to the Distinction Doors’ range is a positive move in response to the growing market and will allow homeowners to benefit from the low maintenance, trouble free performance and elegant aesthetics that GRP composite doors can offer and further complement Distinction’s standard GRP door range.

The quality of Distinction’s GRP composite doors is renowned in the industry. The innovative features and elegance of its One Lite GRP composite bi-fold door means the company looks set to extend this reputation to a new area.

The composite door has very quickly become a commodity product in the UK. Imported by the bucket load from Asia the buzz surrounding the fibreglass entrance door has often reached fever pitch over recent months. Every bell and whistle has began lavishing such doors…… long handles, short handles, knobs, any RAL colour you desire, extra seals, extra locks and so the list goes on. The trouble is that all these components are readily available and it is not long before all trade suppliers have jumped on the latest trend hoping this will unlock greater sales and the holy grail of prosperity for their business and themselves. The real evidence of this can be seen when picking up copies of the composite door brochures of the key trade suppliers.

‘The door ranges are nearly always identical, the hardware is always nearly identical, the glass designs are nearly always identical and often the very images in the brochures themselves are duplicates.’

This certainly captures the views of the MD of Dual Aspect Glass, Jeremy Town. Jeremy adds ‘I think it is fair to say that key trade suppliers of composite doors offer a very similar standard commodity package. The real danger with this is how to compete and retain sales with such an oversaturated standard market offering. If a customer can buy the very same product down to the finest of details from 100’s of different sources the trade supplier is entering in to a world of longterm problems in my view. Margins will be squeezed on an ongoing basis and retention of customers will become increasingly difficult.’

Dual Aspect Glass is a market leader in the supply of decorative glass for

composite doors and water based coating technology. The company is convinced that there is a strategy for trade composite door sales that offers retention of important customers, increased profitability and individuality. Jeremy comments ‘there is a solution to these issues and a far more progressive and innovative way to approach the market which we are keen to pioneer’.

‘When it comes to decorative glass for composite doors we can offer exclusive designs to our customers that will not be available from any other source’.

‘The money that they spend on marketing such exclusive ranges is then well spent as their customers have to be loyal and return to source for purchase as the offering is unique and not readily available. This also means that the trade supplier is not having to constantly concede on margin as he is bombarded with talk of cheaper prices from his competitors.’ In addition Dual Aspect are bucking the trend by offering bespoke brochure design by a professional independent designer with high quality,

fresh and new images throughout.

We are determined to work closely with our customers to offer them marketing support that is not simply from a template but exclusively designed for them.

The brochure design is of the highest quality and this combined with brand new glass designs begins to give trade suppliers their own distinctive identity.’

Jeremy concludes ‘We also have an ace card up our sleeve to benefit trade suppliers. We offer nearly all decorative glass styles including zinc triple glazing, fusion and resin bevels but we offer these products for up to half the price of our competitors. We also have new and patented decorative glass technology that is only available from us and is incredibly cost effective. These products can be viewed at our newly launched tablet friendly website ‘www.dualaspectglass.com’. So if you need exclusivity, greatly improved margins and fresh marketing we are here to help.’

The VEKA UK Group has unveiled the next coveted product in the Imagine suite.Following the launch of the sought-after Imagine Bi-fold Door - which set new standards in the industry - the team is proud to present the Imagine French Door.

Colin Torley, Sales and Marketing Director explains: “We showcased the Imagine French Door at the FIT Show and we were pleased at the overwhelming

response it received. Visitors to the stand were full of praise for the look and operation of the Imagine French Door. The system has a seamless, stylish flush finish - which really caught people’s attention. There is no obtrusive central pillar or false mullion, the doors simply close neatly together and lock securely. The design, security measures, flexibility and even a robust insurance guarantee for the end user all combine to make it another world-class product from The VEKA UK Group.

“With our customers in mind, we designed this system to offer simple fabrication and fitting. It has a range of installer-friendly benefits, including fully-adjustable hinges, 2D adjustable lock keep and the option of a mechanically-jointed outerframe.

“With its unique flush finish, the Imagine French Door is a stunning alternative to traditional French Doors and is available in a wide range of colours and woodgrains from the popular Variations colour range.

“Like the Imagine Bi-Fold Door, the Imagine French Door has been designed ‘from scratch’. There has been no compromise on hardware as The VEKA

UK Group teamed up with ERA, one of the country’s top names in locks and security mechanisms, to design an exclusive range of hardware including hinges, locks and handles.

“Profile and hardware will be available from The VEKA UK Group, so that customers can benefit from the simplicity of a single-source supplier and can enjoy excellent lead times.

“PAS 24 and Secured by Design can be achieved on standard doors with no modification required and these energy-efficient doors are also triple-glazing ready. With triple glazing, the system can achieve U-values below 1.0.

“As with the Imagine Bi-Fold Door System, the Imagine French Door is available with a choice of three threshold options: standard, low threshold (Part M compliant when used with ramps) and ultralow internal room divider.

“These doors are backed by the ERA Five Star Guarantee, which we’ve found to be a major selling point for discerning homeowners, offering up to £5000 worth of benefits.”

Phoenix Doors, part of MASCO UK Window Group Ltd, has increased its manufacturing space and invested significantly in new production machinery to take the company’s GRP composite door manufacturing capability to the next level of growth. This includes an SCM CNC Tech Z2 52D machining centre, which joined two existing single-bed units at the company’s enlarged GRP composite door manufacturing site in August. An additional edge bander is due to be delivered later this year.

Capable of prepping two doors in tandem, the Tech Z2 adds greater precision and flexibility to their weekly production capacity, increasing this by up to 50% on current levels. This additional capability also allows for more planned maintenance across the entire composite door manufacturing operation.

“With the strength of the MASCO Group behind us, we are continuing to invest in machinery, systems and people to deliver the best possible products and customer

service,” comments Haydon Statham, Phoenix Doors’ Sales Director.

“The new CNC machining centre is an important investment for us as we continue to grow, while giving us the ability to meet shorter lead times,” he continues.

“An added benefit is that it also gives us seamless continuous production without any downtime. Autumn is traditionally a busy time for us, so the new CNC’s arrival is particularly timely as we gear up

In response to its sustained growth, Phoenix Doors now employs two full-time service engineers looking after machinery at its PVC-U door panels and composite door facilities. Expansion into a fourth unit at its Bluntisham site has also enhanced its production capabilities.

Haydon adds: “Investment, driven by the Group, is continuing to propel us forwards, increasing our responsiveness to new opportunities and the confidence factor for our customers. As the complete door solution company for the retail replacement market, it’s vital to stay ahead of the game.”

A bold red composite door from Hurst Plastics has been used to make a stunning entranceway on a property which features in a major home renovation TV series. In the brand new series ‘The 100k House: Tricks of the Trade’ which airs on BBC Two on Tuesdays at 8pm, property experts Kieran Long and Piers Taylor help owners on very tight budgets to transform their unsuitable properties into dream homes.

Couple Ronnie and Nicky Smith bought their 1950s bungalow in High Wycombe three years ago, but the layout was impractical for family living. With a modest £49,000 renovation budget and the expertise of TV architect Piers

Taylor, the couple have used imaginative design solutions to overhaul their property and create a fantastic family home for themselves and their two young children.

As part of the ambitious project, the couple moved the front door to the side

of the property and fitted the contemporary Bohemia Eclipse composite door from Hurst Plastics. The door, features Hurst’s ‘Brilliance’ decorative glass and architectural hardware to make a bold, modern statement.

Homeowner Ronnie Smith said: “This has been an exhausting project but we are really proud of the end result. We never dreamed this house could look so good. We now have a beautiful and practical four bed family home with plenty of space for the children. And the Hurst composite door provided the perfect finishing touch. It’s the first thing people notice when they arrive and we’ve had some really positive comments about how great it looks. The design of the door looks like a giant smile, so we call it the ‘happy door’ - it’s a very fitting nickname after such a huge renovation!’”

Mark Atkinson, Sales Director at Hurst Plastics, added: “We were delighted to supply our composite door to Ronnie and Nicky. They have completed a fantastic transformation and the door really complements their lovely new home.”

Hurst’s Bohemia collection of composite doors is a designer selection of door styles, unique colours and architectural hardware with a modern edge. Like all Hurst composite doors, it combines the highest levels of security and weather performance with enviable good looks.

The Bohemia Collection features in Hurst’s latest composite door brochure. For further details on this brochure or to request a copy, please contact the Marketing department on 01482 790790 or visit www.hurst-plastics.co.uk.

Truedor from IG Doors is now available to order on-line, and Richard Kirman Sales and Marketing Manager for the company’s trade division tells us why crossing off the latest milestone in their development plan is such a big deal for them and their customers.“Ordering on-line is a must for composite door suppliers in today’s modern market; it is the way the industry operates and is very much on the wish list of all the people we have spoken to since we launched Truedor. With our on-line ordering system now live it gives our customers the flexibility to operate their businesses at times which suit them; they are not dependent on our sales office to place their orders, they can do that at any time”.

“We know that making the on-line ordering system live is going to be a great boost for our customers, and for ourselves; when we set out to launch Truedor we were very clear on a number of things – we would have an outstanding product range, and we would make customer service the kingpin of our offering. Having the on line ordering system is very much a part of the customer service offering”.

DiaLOgue

“We know from the feedback we are getting that we have got our product range and our service levels exactly as our customers want them; the dialogue we have had with them from the start about what they expect from us will continue to ensure that we maintain those standards, and will enable us to continue to talk to them about what else they would like from us in the future. This dialogue with our customers is essential for success in the long term; we want to develop a loyal customer base which is with us for years to come, and we fully recognise that loyalty is a two way thing”.

SHaring THe benefiTS Of OrDering On-Line

“A part of this loyalty will come through sharing the rewards generated by our on-line ordering system. We believe that on-line ordering is a win-win for us and our customers, and we recognise that we should share the benefits of this. The fact is if our customers order on-line and pay on-line then that saves us time and we should share those savings with them rather than keeping them for ourselves. That’s why we are offering all of our customers a £10 discount when they order on-line and a further £10 discount

when they pay on-line. It is a part of our customer ethos; it has to be a partnership to succeed in the long term and hopefully offering these discounts shows that we are serious when we say this. It is a tangible sign of us giving something back to our customers where we both benefit.”

£50 Off yOur firST On-Line OrDer

“There is also a first order discount of £50 available, and we would urge all of our customers, existing and new, to take advantage of it. It will give them the opportunity to see just how simple the ordering system is to use, how versatile the product range is, and just how well the customer service and delivery system we have implemented works to support them once their orders have been placed”.

“Developing the on-line ordering system is a key milestone in our development plan; it brings us even closer to our customers and is the last of the major developments we need to support them in the market. There are going to be many more developments of course; additional products, more marketing support for trade, and more marketing support to the consumer through our relationship with George Clarke. It is a really exciting time ahead for us and for our customers, and with the market of Composite Doors still growing what better time to join with us to maximise the business opportunity that brings”.

Fabricators can now achieve the requirements set out by Secured by Design with three doors from aluminium systems company, Jack Aluminium. It’s thermally efficient TD68 standard hook lock, anti-panic and Mag Lock doorsets have achieved the PAS 24 security standard and a BM TRADA Q-Mark certification under the Enhanced Security Door Scheme, which complies with the Police initiative to reduce crime by incorporating crime prevention measures at the design stage. The TD68 suite of three doors incorporates a thermally broken threshold to help achieve a U-value of 1.7 W/m2K, which makes it ideal to specify and install where there are busy, high footfall areas. The anti-panic and mag lock doors are designed as a solution for hospitals, schools, hotels, apartment

blocks and a whole range of public sector buildings where lock tampering and forced entry are potential weak points for unauthorised personnel.

All doors were tested were in large sizes; Single doors to 1250 wide and 2350 high and where the double door was tested it was 2400 wide and 2350 high.

Jack Aluminium concentrates on designing cost effective solutions for commercial fabricators to make and sell, so the doors were designed to cut out the extra costs associated with labour intensive processes and wastage.

Sales and marketing director, Jeff Pearson says: “Early on in the business we made the decision to focus on the commercial market.”

“We spoke to customers about some of the main issues they face when specifying products and energy efficiency and security were mentioned time and time again. We initially designed the TD68 to be an economical, thermally efficient aluminium door with the lowest U-value possible and it has been extremely successful for customers.

“We continued to listen to customers and responded with the TD68 Pivot Anti-Panic Door which features a unique low threshold and rebate to prevent tampering by means of a wire under or over the door leaf. The TD68 Mag Lock Door was designed next to withstand forced entry on common entrances.

“Investing to test our door suite to PAS 23 and 24 standards enables fabricators to manufacture a range of doors using our technical manual and their own in-house quality procedures as Secured by Design approved products.”

CE MARKING

GLASS & GLAZING

Build Check, UKAS accredited Notified Body for CE Marking for windows and doors, is still being asked about CE Marking from companies yet to comply with the new legislation brought in on 1 July 2013. “We suggested earlier this year that up to 80 per cent of companies may not be complaint with the law, and we don’t see this improving,” says CE Marking expert and Technical Director at Build Check Richard Bate.

“Certainly there is still a significant number who have not started the process. But the biggest problem for companies is how to keep up to date with CE Marking legislation.”

Even people who hit the deadline last year may not have updated their CE Marks. Changes to hardware may have a knock-on effect to safety device testing; different glazing options can affect thermal transmittance; and switching

window systems requires updating the Declaration of Performance. For example companies may have started advertising A or A+ energy rated windows this year, and upgrades like this need to have a separate CE Mark.

In direct response to the growing problem for many companies, Build Check Publications has added a full advice centre around The Oracle to help keep visitors and subscribers legal and up to date with Building Regulations and changing legislation. Step by step guides show how to comply and useful information will help keep companies on the right side of the law. The website also has a sign up for companies to receive latest advice bulletins to alert them to the latest issues.

“The new system is designed to make the management of CE Marking much easier for companies,” adds Richard. “Having check lists and advice on The Oracle will mean companies have one place where they can get everything they need. Subscribers can even store all their

company information and Declaration of Performances for their CE Marked products on their own dedicated page of the website, keeping them in the public domain in accordance with the regulation.

“We are already hearing about companies installing windows in commercial applications that are being asked for evidence of CE Marking. Now we’re seeing some companies receive visits from Trading Standards. One year on we believe it’s only a matter of time before the first cases come to court.”

To keep up to date with the latest information on CE marking go to www.buildcheckpublications.co.uk.

Build Check Publications has added lots more support and advice for subscribers to The Oracle, its popular online fenestration resource. The home of The Oracle, www.buildcheckpublications.co.uk now includes a complete service to fabricators, installers and glass unit manufacturers to keep their CE Marks current.Build Check Publications has added a full advice centre around The Oracle to help keep visitors and subscribers legal and up to date with Building Regulations and changing legislation. This is particularly important for CE Marking as minor changes to a window or door specification can require a new Declaration of Performance. The Oracle makes it much easier to update product

information quickly. Subscribers can even store all their company information and Declaration of Performances for their CE Marked products on their own dedicated page of the website, keeping them in the public domain in accordance with the regulation.

Subscribers can use The Oracle’s U-Value calculator to work out the performance of windows and doors and there is also an acoustic calculator for windows. The website includes CE Mark templates with step by step advice and guidance to help subscribers complete

their own CE Marks simply and cost effectively.

Richard Bate, Technical Director at Build Check says: “The new website will continue to evolve with advice and information added constantly. Subscribers will receive industry updates and reminders on changes to regulations and important news, so they are always up to date.

“Many people believe that getting products CE Marked is a one off job, but any changes to product supply or specification must be reflected in the CE Marking documentation. That’s why we have added the extra services to The Oracle.

“The website also includes advice and downloads written in response to customers frequently asked questions. Visit The Oracle advice centre at www.buildcheckpublications.co.uk.”

For leading glass processing specialist TuffX, ensuring customers can achieve greater sales has always been an important part of business relations. Building working partnerships with customers remains a priority for the company which has seen record sales increasing year on year for the last 3 years, since moving into the purpose built 55,000 sq ft expansion in Knowsley, Merseyside.

Senior management at the company took the progressive approach to customer satisfaction by developing support literature as well as online marketing tools that customers can adapt individually, all of which have been positively received.

Ensuring that the consumer can grasp the technical merits of the glass products available to them has left customers impressed, as they have reaped the benefits of improved sales generation.

Customers state that the POS tools have been extremely beneficial when approaching homeowners, who have been impressed by the performance

figures and quality standards offered. Many believe that these have helped to secure the final sale.

Supporting customers with powerfully persuasive marketing initiatives continues to be one of the most important aspects of the business relationships that the TuffX team develops.

As most business sectors have been gearing up for some time to embrace the speed and accessibility of online presence, TuffX has focused on providing customers with initiatives that will help to generate positive sales results.

In respect of the Ambience conservatory glass roofing range, customers can take advantage of three marketing support tools. Glass samples and product brochures with simple product data emphasise the benefits of each glass type available in the portfolio; whilst the website www.ambiglass.co.uk can be individualised by each customer and used as an online marketing tool.

The TuffX main site www.tuffxprocessedglass.co.uk has all technical data and statistics readily available regarding the processed glass options manufactured by the company for all sized contracts. This has been specifically tailored for projects that must meet the requirements of architects and specifiers.

Graham Price, Managing Director comments, “Accreditations and industry standards count for nothing if the customer and end user do not understand their benefits. We believe our support tools help to reflect our quality standards.

Graham concludes, “With an array of European accreditations and a vast choice of customer support initiatives we provide complete product confidence which is reflected with our positive sales record.”

Free samples are available from the company by calling 0845 3 400 200. Alternatively, please visit the websites www.ambiglass.co.uk or www.tuffxprocessedglass.co.uk for more information on the range of glass products available.

Glass hardware specialist Bohle Ltd has added a new all-glass balustrade system to its wide range of balustrade products.

The Bohle EasyMount Vario is an all-glass, adjustable, balustrade channel, fully tested to BS 6180:2011. Supplied in 2.5 metre or 5 metre lengths, EasyMount Vario features a unique, patented, sliding base shoe, which permits quick and easy alignment of the glass panels, typically with up to 40mm of adjustment. Using a simple, reusable tool the glass is adjusted leaving the balustrade panels perfectly vertically aligned.

EasyMount Vario can accommodate glass thicknesses from 12mm to 31.52mm, in both toughened and laminated glass.

Compared to similar systems, the simple yet aesthetic design of EasyMount Vario can reduce installation times by around 30% and most importantly, when working at height it can be adjusted from one-side. This can potentially save the additional costs and risks associated with hiring lifts or scaffolding.

A wedge version of the system called EasyMount Fix has also been launched, sharing the advantages of the Vario system and offering a simple, low-cost solution to all-glass balustrade installations. For more information on the EasyMount system call 0800 616151 or visit www.bohle-group.com.

Sealing and bonding glass-to-glass installations with silicone products can be messy and time consuming.

Now Bohle Ltd has launched a clear adhesive bonding tape called Duplocoll® which is fast, clean and easy to apply. Duplocoll® is perfect for applications such as all-glass partition walls, furniture and shower cubicles. It works with a range of materials such as wood, aluminium, plastic, ceramic or glass and because it has a refractive index almost identical to glass it is virtually transparent. Supplied in 12 metre rolls, in three widths; 5mm, 7mm and 9mm, for glass thicknesses ranging from 8mm to 12.76mm; Duplocoll® is resistant to ageing and UV radiation and does not impact on the appearance of the installation.

Duplocoll® not only bonds, it also seals, damps, isolates and protects glass-to-glass joints, easily compensating for manufacturing or installation tolerances and tensions. It is also anti-microbial and

resistant to chemicals and softeners. The viscoelastic adhesive film distributes uniformly across rough surfaces and is highly resistant to splitting. Glass-to-glass installation is made even easier with the optional Bohle applicator tools, which are designed to apply Duplocoll® at just the right pressure over a range of standard glass thicknesses. For further information including samples call free on 0800 616151 or visit the Bohle website, www.bohle-group.com.

Independent IGU manufacturer, Padiham Glass Ltd, has been in business for over 30 years and in that time has adapted to meet the challenges of an ever-changing, yet always demanding fenestration industry. Their latest product development hails a new era for the company and shows that they are committed to listening to the needs of their customers, and to exploring alternative avenues of business.

Pyrotherm Insulating Glass™ is Padiham Glass Ltd’s brand of fire-rated insulating glass units and they are proud to announce that earlier this year (2014) they became fully certified to attestation level one for the manufacture of fire resistant IGU’s.

In addition to becoming a licensed partner of CGI International this year, which has enabled them to stock and process CGI’s

Pyroguard™ fire-glass products, Padiham Glass Ltd identified a specific gap in the market to manufacture fire resistant insulating glass units for both commercial and new build applications.

Speaking about their latest product innovation, Anthony Clarkson, Managing Director of Padiham Glass Ltd, commented that although getting accreditation hasn’t been an easy process, it has been worth it. “What makes this new brand, Pyrotherm Insulating Glass™ even more important in our regulation-heavy industry,” said Anthony, “is the fact that we can provide test evidence and certification for various combinations of impact resistance and insulation. Going through this process has deepened our industry knowledge of specific building regulations relating to fire safety and we feel that gives us a definitive edge over our competitors.”

The benefits of Pyrotherm Insulating Glass™ are hard to argue with. With lead

times starting from between five and seven working days, Padiham Glass Ltd can supply fire resistant units quickly but without compromising on quality. They can also provide test evidence on request which is supported by a knowledgeable technical support team and offer a UK delivery service as well.

To find out more about this innovative product range or to discuss your requirements please call Padiham Glass Ltd’s Fire Glass Solutions division on 01282 774124. Alternatively you can fax your requests to 01282 687345 or email [email protected].

Europe’s leading low-E glass has now been made better than ever with the launch of the next evolution of the acclaimed PLANITHERM TOTAL+ from Saint-Gobain Glass. The new PLANITHERM TOTAL+ has an increased g-value, making higher WERs more achievable, and also an even more robust coating to maximise manufacturers’ yield and reduce associated losses.

The g-value is stepped up from 0.71 to 0.73 thanks to the use of SGG’s new lower-iron PLANICLEAR float substrate and further

enhancements to the coating, giving not only higher solar gain to contribute to WER banding but also improved aesthetics through its greater transparency.

For IGU manufacturers, its improved magnetron coating has greater mechanical strength and scratch-resistance, reducing the wastage from accidental damage and so helping to achieve higher yield ratios.

Saint-Gobain Glass Marketing Manager, Susan Lambeth said: “This new PLANITHERM TOTAL+ not only gives higher WER performance, including the ability to deliver the new A+ band more easily, but also greater efficiencies to our customer, the IGU manufacturer. PLANITHERM

TOTAL+ is one of the core elements of the residential window industry so we know these developments will be welcomed by many.

“Saint-Gobain Glass has always been a world leader in magnetron coating technology, as well as the development of all kinds of advanced glazing and this latest evolution will be a major factor in our retaining this lead.”

PLANICLEAR, which forms the substrate of the new PLANITHERM TOTAL+ was launched earlier this year as a lower-iron glass, giving higher light transmission and solar gain without the price-exclusivity of a specialist full low-iron product.

PLANITHERM has been a residential market leader for over 12 years. As well as undergoing constant evolution to retain that lead, the brand has been strongly supported by TV consumer advertising and in the trade by its unique Planitherm Installer Network and extensive marketing support material.

An increased consumer demand for personalised and individual products has led to a sharp rise in Hurst Plastics’ Direct Digital Glass printing (DDG) technology. The company has reported that orders for its personalised glass designs have quadrupled in the last three months. The clever technique, which is exclusive to Hurst Plastics, can reproduce any image directly onto glass to create a truly unique entrance door.

“There is a real appetite for personalised products with homeowners now using them widely to individualise their properties,” says Mark Atkinson, Sales Director at Hurst Plastics.

“Our unique digital glass printing service allows installers to create a completely bespoke glass design for a customer’s front door and bring an individual touch to their home. No longer restricted by standard glass designs, homeowners can use any image they want to create

something really personal as an entrance into their home,” he adds.

National fabricator Dunraven has been working with Hurst for nearly a decade and has recently supplied a series of personalised glass designs to its customers. Ryan White, Group Marketing Manager at Dunraven, says: “We were seeing an increase in demand for more intricate glass designs which were impractical to create using traditional methods. We had a sample of Hurst’s printed glass made up and it was fantastically received by customers. The positive feedback prompted us to actively sell the product and we are anticipating more demand from customers as the technique catches on with them.”

Dunraven has created a selection of completely unique glass designs for its domestic customers. The designs have been supplied both as a single glazed unit and within a complete Hurst door.

Intelligent printing technology recreates the image onto a piece of glass, which is then fitted into an existing door or a new Hurst door panel. The glass is fully guaranteed and is weather and UV fade resistant.

Dunraven was established in 1978 and now employs more than 500 staff. The company - one of the top 10 fabricators in the UK - fabricates and delivers around 2000 products per week. Hurst supplies a selection of moulded, feature and flat PVC-U door panels to Dunraven. The Bridgend-based fabricator chose Hurst as a key supplier because of Hurst’s strong heritage, competitive prices, comprehensive guarantees, short lead times and superior product quality, which virtually eradicated the warping issues that had plagued Dunraven with previous suppliers.

Once again TuffX brand ambassador David Price, has garnered another successful victory over his latest opponent Yaroslav Zavorotnyi. In June this year, the heavyweight champion took care of business by defeating the 39-year-old Ukrainian journeyman in a 10 round unanimous decision fight which took place at the Sport and Congress Center, Schwerin, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Alemania, Germany. The final judges’ scores were 97-93, 98-92, and 100-90.

Price appeared to hurt Zavorotnyi with a body shot in the 3rd round and a hard right hand to the head in the 7th. He was able to see the punches coming all night, and so could brace himself for the

occasional hard shots that Zavorotnyi landed in the fight.

David’s promoter Kalle Sauerland is now interested in stepping the 6’8” Champion up a class by placing him with a top 10 contender for his next fight in Liverpool, with Sauerland’s goal being for Price to beat the top 10 contender by the end of the year.

“It would be good to come up against someone in the top 10 world ratings and Pricey is already in the top 10 of the WBC rankings himself.” Sauerland said to espn.co.uk.

The TuffX ambassador has recently beaten the following contenders: Yaroslav Zavorotnyi, Ondrej Pala and Istvan Ruzsinszky.

Currently the WBO has the following heavyweights ranked in their top 10: 1.

Dereck Chisora 2. Andy Ruiz 3. Deontay Wilder 4. Tyson Fury 5. Christian Hammer 6. Kubrat Pulev 7. Mike Perez 8. Charles Martin 9. Bryant Jennings 10. David Price. It is expected that either Charles Martin or Christian Hammer will be the next potential opponents for David to fight .

Graham Price, Managing Director at TuffX comments, “Our customers have shown a real interest in David’s matches and are keen to watch his progress. Supporting him in his challenge for the titles is proving to be a very positive move for all of us.”

One of the UK’s leading independent manufacturers of high performance insulating glass units, insulating spandrel panels and suppliers of processed furniture glass for both the commercial and domestic markets, Padiham Glass Ltd has recently returned to CENSolutions for its wide range of certification services. CENSolutions is widely recognised as the leading consultancy and test facility for the window, door and glazing industries and as it continues to extend its scope of services, so its customer base continues to expand.

Padiham Glass Ltd has come back to CENSolutions for its quality service, extended scope and fair prices as Sales Director, Wes Clarkson, explains: “Padiham Glass Ltd is committed to supplying quality products that exceed customer expectations but to do this we

need to work with suppliers that give us the right support for the right price.

“We have worked with CENSolutions before and found their service and advice to be second to none. We were particularly pleased though to learn that they had extended their scope to include the facilitation of certification of Fire Glass Units, through their partners ER Certification & TÜV Rheinland Nederland, because Fire Glass Solutions is a brand new division we’ve just opened.”

“As with all of our other divisions, we want to ensure we are supplying our customers with the very best products that meet and even exceed current legislation. We pride ourselves on our honest and approachable service and CENSolutions offers exactly the same to us.”

CENSolutions was set up to demystify the certification process and provide straight forward, plain English advice for a competitive price so we’re pleased this formula is giving Padiham Glass Ltd peace of mind so they can concentrate on what they do best – supplying quality glass products for the commercial and domestic markets.”

Inferior imitations of RENOLITs world-leading exterior foils are appearing in the UK market. Primarily laminated on cladding and roofline products, these foils will fail when exposed to weather and sunlight, causing problems for installers and home owners alike.

In recent months, a growing number of RENOLIT customers have made the company aware that these products were being installed in the UK and marketed as suitable for exterior application. Having weather tested samples of these components in their in house laboratory to DIN EN513 (as specified in RAL 716), the results prove that these films are completely unsuitable for exterior use. In their tests the products failed to achieve even 1300 hours of artificial weathering before displaying unacceptable signs of colour variation, which is considered to equate to less than 2 years exposure in a UK climate, with the samples then

becoming almost completely destroyed in the equivalent of less than 3 years (see photo 1). Furthermore, customers of RENOLIT have provided photos of UK installations using this type of foil that have experienced full product failure, reportedly within two years of installation (see photo 2).

RENOLIT therefore recommends that fabricators and installers check the source of their foiled products before installing at a customer. This will prevent costly repairs in the near future and damage to both their own and the industry’s reputation.

The increasing popularity of foiled building components has been well publicised, as home owners become increasingly aware of the opportunities to improve their property with realistic woodgrain designs or fashionable solid colours rather than just plain white pvc-u. As the inventor and world’s largest manufacturer of these exterior laminates, RENOLIT has been at the forefront of this growth and all indications are that this trend

will continue to grow over the coming years.

Exterior laminates are continually exposed to the environment and require specific components within their formulation to be able to withstand weathering and degradation over time. At RENOLIT they extensively test all exterior laminates, both internally and externally

to ensure real performance targets are achieved. All RENOLIT EXOFOL effects are manufactured and tested in accordance with the accepted industry standard - RAL 716, which requires a minimum performance of 10,000 hours of artificial weathering (equating to over 10 years in a UK climate) without excessive colour fade or visual defects.

THe cOMPany

The RENOLIT Group is an international leader in the manufacture of high-quality plastic films and related products for technical applications. This independent family-owned business, which has been setting benchmarks for quality and innovation for over 65 years, now employs a workforce of approximately 4,500 employees at more than 30 production sites and sales entities.

The GGF expressed no great surprise at The Energy and Climate Change Committee’s report into the Green Deal in which they brand the policy a “disappointing failure”. The Committee qualified their comment by adding that cost to customers was too high and the terms of the deal created uncertainty for providers. The Committee however has recommended offering homeowners discounts on stamp duty or council tax in exchange for making energy-efficient home improvements.

A combination of financial, communication and behavioural barriers has meant that the Green Deal has been slow to attract customers. Green Deal finance is, in principle, an attractive proposition, but the high interest rates attached to the loan, were putting off potential customers as many homeowners are able to find

cheaper finance mechanisms elsewhere. DECC’s communication strategy has been confusing and has often conflated different energy efficiency schemes. As a result, the Government has struggled to drum up support even amongst those households that could benefit most from a Green Deal loan.

Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive commented, “We have been lobbying for some years that the Government has to find incentives to encourage homeowners to make their homes more energy efficient. Since the outset of Green Deal and ECO, the GGF has been in talks with Ministers and Government officials on the problems of the scheme. Time and again we stressed that the Green Deal was too complex and lacked the incentives to make it attractive to homeowners. So this week’s report is no surprise.”

Tim Yeo MP, Chair of the Energy & Climate Change Select Committee said:

“Stamp duty discounts and variable council tax rates could be used to broaden the appeal of energy efficiency improvements and make them even more of a money saver for households. Extra incentives certainly need to be considered.”

Nigel Rees concluded, “Green Deal may have failed but it is imperative that new incentives, schemes and initiatives are a part of the Government plans to improve the UK housing stock, save homeowners costs on fuel bills and reduce carbon emissions.”

Last week, Nigel Rees, GGF Group Chief Executive attended the launch of the Get Britain Building 2020 Delivery Plan which makes the case for using construction as a driver of jobs and growth and includes a range of recommendations for the next Government, covering the period 2015 to 2020.At the launch, it was mentioned that the Construction Industry is bigger in revenue than the aerospace and car industries added together and the campaign and this latest report has gained cross-party support. The 2020 Delivery Plan outlines how best to deliver new housing and infrastructure projects that would result in 200,000 new jobs in the construction sector - according to the industry’s

leading organisations including the Glass and Glazing Federation.

As a co-signatory of the Get Britain Building Campaign the GGF joins the Modern Masonry Alliance, Federation of Master Builders, Home Builders Federation and Builders Merchants Federation who represent the major players in the construction and housing industry from the manufacturers and suppliers of building materials, right through to both the large and small construction companies.

Nigel Rees commented, “It’s important for the GGF to get fully behind an industry wide campaign such as ‘Get Britain Building’. We have been involved since the launch of the campaign in 2009 and we completely endorse this recent report which proposes a comprehensive range of solid recommendations to help growth and jobs in the sector.”

The report is designed to steer the Government in 2015 to 2020 to deliver

a robust 5 year plan for the construction industry. The report’s core purpose is to help the Government meet its objectives on; reducing unemployment, growing local and national economies and decreasing carbon emissions over the next five years and beyond.

Nigel Rees added, “As a significant part of the overall construction industry, all companies in the glass and glazing sector should support the recommendations made in this report. It stands to benefit everyone in the supply chain if the next Government accept and implement the delivery plan outlined. Of course there will be many challenges ahead but also big opportunities as highlighted in the 2020 Delivery Plan.”

The Get Britain Building 2020 Delivery Plan is available to view download from the Get Britain Building Website http://www.getbritainbuilding.co.uk/default.asp.

CENSolutions has been celebrating 10 years in business this year and as its 11th birthday approaches, it gives Joint Managing Directors Mike Gaillard and Wayne Rogerson a chance to reflect on how their company and the certification industry has changed in the last ten years. Longevity and security are something that matter to most of us when choosing a supplier – whether it be a builder for a new extension on your house, a fabricator supplying your windows and doors, or a hardware company supplying your handles. Certification is no different. Most reputable window companies and sealed unit manufacturers want to work with someone they feel they can trust and having a good heritage helps give customers that peace of mind.

CENSolutions was set up because we could see there was a gap in the market for an expert but friendly approach to help companies adhere to current legislation and provide their regular audits and certification to prove compliance on an ongoing basis. There were a few other companies to choose between for this service at the time, but many in the

market told us they were expensive and were not offering value for money, with poor advice and slow response times.

graDuaL grOwTH

We set about employing some agents so that CENSolutions could provide a local service to window and glass companies of all sizes.

As more companies saw we were offering something truly different, more enquiries came in and it became clear we would need to recruit a nationwide network of agents across the UK and Ireland. We now have 8 agents and are currently looking to recruit two more – one in Scotland and one in the South of England.

We also have three members of the team that are office based to manage enquiries as well as conducting the EN 1279:6 Periodic testing we offer in-house.

CENSolutions has gradually increased its scope of services over the years and now offer a complete package including: CE Marking; Secured by Design (with our partners Wintech and ER Certification); CMS Quality Marks; Level 1 Attestation for panic devices and fire resistant IGUs; BS EN 1279, EN 14351, BS 6375, EN 12210, EN 1026, EN 1027, EN 1627-30 and/or PAS 24-2012, EN 12150, EN 14449 and other fenestration related European Standards.

THe LargeST SuPPLier Of cerTificaTiOn

With this extended scope has come an extended customer base and we believe we are now the largest supplier of certification in the window, door and glass industries. We set out and continue to offer a plain speaking and straight forward approach. Keeping up to date with industry standards to ensure you have the most up to date certification at all times can be a hassle if you don’t really know the details of the standards and which sections apply to your business. This hasn’t been helped by the

fact that there is so much misinformation in the market – some of it even coming from other certification suppliers.

Luckily there are plenty of businesses that are still trying to do the best by their customers and stay ahead of legislative changes well ahead of the deadlines for change. In the last ten years we have obviously seen a few key amends including the introduction of energy ratings, lowered u-values and more recently mandatory CE Marking. CENSolutions has played an instrumental role in helping customers through all of these changes and beyond with ongoing audits and free of charge advice to answer any ad hoc queries.

In more recent years we have made the effort to become more active members of the industry – for example through our involvement with the GGF – Mike is a Chairman of the IGU Manufacturers group, and Wayne is involved with the Window/Door and Conservatory group.

ceLebraTe gOOD TiMeS

CENSolutions has celebrated its 10 year milestone in style with its attendance at the FIT Show; position as a finalist in the G13 Awards; sponsorship of the industry networking event PIGS; support of the Triple Glazing event and Trading Standards Conference as well as its charity efforts raising over £3000 for the National Kidney Federation by doing the National Three Peaks Challenge.

We have enjoyed the last 10 years doing what we do and we’re looking forward to working with our existing, and hopefully more new customers, in the next 10 years.

The GGF has long argued for a reduced rate of VAT for energy efficient windows and doors, from the current 20% rate to a 5% rate – to bring energy efficient glazing into parity with other energy saving products. A significant number of GGF Members who manufacture, supply and install conservatories have found that homeowners wishing to build conservatories on their properties are being hampered as a result of the change of ownership of private sewers. The GGF has developed industry guidance which outlines best practice for installing conservatories or extensions in cases where building work may go near to a sewer. Given the absence of a water companies’ code of conduct, the GGF is campaigning for this guidance to be adopted by the water companies, in order to provide clarity for consumers who wish to extend their homes.

Glazerite installers have smashed all past records in the 2014 Network VEKA awards, walking away with more than half the entire trophy table including UK overall champion. As well as Aberdeen-based Thistle Windows and Conservatories taking the national trophy again, Glazerite customers took no fewer than six of the organisation’s ten regional awards, as well as Best Newcomer and 13 of the 30 Regional Finalist positions.

Glazerite Director Jason Thompson said after the awards: “We never thought they could beat last year’s grand slam but they have. Every one of them has done superbly and we are very proud to have been a part of their success.”

“We have always been 100% supporters of Network VEKA and all our member customers and these results are a clear endorsement of that support.”

Thistle marked its first full year of partnering with Glazerite with its lucky 13th trophy win, taking both the National top spot and the all-Scotland regional trophy, also reinforcing its clear lead as Network VEKA’s most prolific trophy winner ever.

Three members retained the regional title for at least the second year: Goliath Homeworld for the Midlands, Shane Howells for the West and KJM Group for the South. Cheadle Glass celebrated its first full year as a member with the North

West title, while Prestige Glazing went one better on last year’s finalist nomination by taking the trophy for the East. Best Newcomer title went to Frames Conservatories Direct of Bury St Edmunds.

All the trophies were presented by Network VEKA brand ambassador Steve Davis at a special ceremony and gala dinner at the Eastwood Hall Hotel, Nottingham.

This is the first year the awards have been held separately from the organisation’s formal AGM.

Last year, Glazerite customers took four of the ten regional trophies as well as the newly established award for promoting the Network VEKA brand and ten of the 30 finalist slots.

Glazerite Windows Ltd is VEKA’s largest UK trade fabricator and a prominent Network VEKA member, with a reputation for unsurpassed customer service as well as a comprehensive product range.

The company offers a fully nationwide service based on manufacturing units in Northants and Greater Manchester and a distribution hub in Bristol.

GLASS & GLAZING

By now everybody is no doubt familiar with the Ice Bucket Challenge craze which has been sweeping the world, and which has seen the likes of David Beckham, Lady Gaga and even Barack Obama participate. The industry’s own personalities have also played their part, and none more so than one of the UK's leading window and door manufacturers, Nationwide Windows.Following their nomination to complete the challenge, which involves pouring a bucket of iced water over one’s head and nominating three people to do the same, Nationwide Windows decided to go one better. As well as making their £3 donations by text, the company’s Managing Director, John Whalley, and Commercial Director, Adrian Pavey raised additional funds in house, with a very tempting proposition for employees.

Adrian explains: “As with everything we do, we decided that if we were going to get involved, we had to go all out to achieve the best result.

So once we received our nomination we contacted all staff members and promised that we would increase the number of ice buckets with every donation. This proved so popular that we quickly realised standard buckets would not be sufficient. You’ll have to watch the video to see the result, but let’s just say employees really got on board.”

John adds: “That we raised almost £200, on top of our text donations shows how much our employees had invested in the charity fundraising. Although the chance of seeing myself and Adrian soaked with icy water no doubt helped. We divided this money between the two charities affiliated with the Ice Bucket Challenge in the UK, Motor Neurone Disease Association (MND) and Macmillan Cancer Support. We’d like to thank everybody who donated, and offer our best wishes to the three companies we nominated to take the challenge, Eurocell, Holloseal and Cleartherm.”

Watch Nationwide Windows complete the Ice Bucket Challenge at: http://youtu.be/igriacafH0e.

The Ice Bucket Challenge has indeed taken the world by storm with 2.5 million uploads to Facebook alone. This phenomenon has raised massive awareness of motor neuron disease which affects about 8000 people in the UK alone and social media been ‘saturated’ with videos of people finding more and more inventive ways of completing the challenge. The MD of Padiham Glass Ltd, Anthony Clarkson, completed his Ice Bucket Challenge on Tuesday 2 September 2014 and

nominated some fellow industry players to take part. Unfortunately, one nominee had already completed his challenge (Andy Jones of Edgetech) however Paul Williams of Northern Express Glass and Richard Hickson of Saint Gobain UK have graciously accepted and will complete in the coming days.

“I’ve made my donation to Cancer Research,” said Anthony, “because it is a charity that’s close to my heart and that of my family. Supporting the charity of your choice is important.”

The completed challenge follows hundreds of other people from the fenestration industry who have taken part, and shows that Padiham Glass Ltd is aware of its responsibilities to the community and understands the importance of giving back.
