In a report it has published, the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB) and the Centre for Local Economic Strategies (CLES) it was also argued that 17 billion of public money spent by LEPs needed to be accounted for.It calls on LEPs to place small businesses at the heart of their plans for local economic growth.

This is the first report of its kind and it stresses small businesses cannot be ignored as the economic recovery continues.

The FSB believes that LEPs are the right vehicle to deliver local economic growth across England but stresses that the voice of small businesses needs to be better represented within LEPs.

SMEs have been responsible for four in five (84%) jobs created in the private sector between 2010 and 2013, and represent almost half (48%) of private sector turnover. However, the report finds that large businesses are perceived to have most influence within LEPs.

Two in five (39%) local authorities and two thirds (67%) of FSB representatives surveyed felt that large businesses exert the greatest influence over LEPs.

The research finds that many LEPs would be better placed to maximise local growth opportunities if they consulted more effectively with the small business

community, particularly around procurement support. Three quarters (77%) of small businesses want LEPs to offer procurement advice as part of their business support package, but only a quarter (25%) of LEPs are planning to offer this kind of service.

While it is important for LEPs to reform their strategic role, the FSB wants to see them become more effective at providing the advice and services small businesses need.

LEPs are crucial to delivering local economic growth across England, admitted John Allan, National Chairman, FSB. While some have done a good job of reaching out to the small business community, others need to up their game.

Small firms will ultimately be the ones creating most of the jobs and prosperity in the private sector, so it is absolutely essential that they are at the heart of all LEPs thinking and plans.

Owner of a solar panel business has been fined for safety failings after two brothers fell through fragile roof not identified as a riskBrynley Perrett, 37, suffered a compression fracture of his back and sternum in the incident at Llan-y-nant Farm, near Trellech, Monmouthshire, in June, 2013. His brother, Anthony, was fortunate to escape injury after both had fallen 15ft.

They were installing solar panels on a building at the farm on behalf of Andrew Green, trading as Green Park Power. He was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) after an investigation found there was no equipment or measures in place, such as nets or scaffold edge protection, to prevent or mitigate a fall.

Cwmbran Magistrates Court heard that Green

failed to make an adequate assessment of the risks of working on a fragile roof and did not take sufficient action to reduce those risks. He pleaded guilty to a breach of the Health and Safety at Work etc. Act 1974 and was fined 4,500 and ordered to pay costs of 1,500.

Both brothers were fortunate not to have suffered far more serious injury in this easily avoidable incident, stated Steve Richardson, HSE Inspector, speaking. Had nets, or other safety measures, been installed then the fall risk would have been significantly minimised and the likelihood of injury reduced. Working on a roof can be dangerous, with falls accounting for more deaths in the construction industry than any other type of incident. The risks are well known, and guidance is freely available outlining how to work safely at height.

Mr Richardson went on to explain that the onus was on Green to ensure the safety of those in his employment but he had failed to do so. Those in charge of the work must be properly qualified and competent to ensure that the work is carried out safely, he concluded.

Further information about working safely at height can be found on the HSE website: www.hse.gov.uk/falls.

The downturn is behind us and the good times mean we can relax - wrong! As Michael Gannon found out when he attended Everglade Windows Customer Conference.Held at its headquarters in Perivale, West London, this was a second conference in a year organized by the trade fabricator. While the first had concentrated on what turned out to be the successful launch to its installer customers of the Air aluminium bi fold and sliding door system, this one in September offered advice on how to manage the businesses in a more favorable trading climate.

Entitled Upsell in the Upturn, the conference might have been guilty of being a self-congratulatory exercise. After all Everglade itself has been able to grow throughout the recession, not made anyone redundant and seen both its PVC-U and aluminium business more then hold its own in challenging market conditions.

As its Operations Director, Yogesh Gopal, explained to the audience: The market looks a lot more positive with installers working flat out.

Sales of Air had been encouraging and there was an improvement in the PVC-U range with more choice of colours and Secured by Design for its hardware (SBD) for windows. Everglade has worked closely and

beneficially with Kommerling to achieve significant improvements. It has been Kommerlings oldest customer in the South East for over 15 years. Working together, the two have been getting across the message that a window is more than just a window. The range Everglade can offer to its installer customers now can claim to have the highest quality in terms of security, energy ratings, and comfort to the end user. Added to this, Kommerling profiles are now lead free.

Where the conference diverged from what could have been an afternoon sales speech, was in what followed.

Andy Ball of Balls2Marketing explained that post-recession can offer more challenges than during one. This may come as a surprise but according to a Plimsoll report, 34% of window manufacturers were at risk of failing at the start of an upturn.

The reasons are more obvious than having to batten down the hatches in the bad times.

For example, businesses can be slow to deal with a spurt in demand after a long and flat period, especially if staff have been laid off. Failing to deal with more enquiries and sales can and is, compounded by materials and skills shortages. Debt levels may increase and while still in a highly competitive market, margins can come under threat.

Using social media to best effect was explained jointly by Sarah Ball and Jemma Bradley from Ball2Marketing.Social media has opened a whole new way of communicating with potential customers and acquiring new business. For example on Facebook, over 750 million log in every day and women over 55 years of age often use Facebook for purchasing products. It may come as a surprise but already 48% of tradesmen win new business via social media and that architects are using Twitter and Facebook for conveying their views on products and systems.

There are an estimated 200,000 different search

engine platforms with industry professionals and trade people opting for Twitter, Facebook and Linked-In. At the end of what proved to be a presentation that offered some surprising aspects, one could only agree with the assessment made by Sarah Ball: social media is now an integral part of business.

The conference also dealt with the matter of health and safety at work. Everglades Sailesh Chudasama pointed out that the government was looking to exempt 3.1 million self-employed from health and safety legislation that currently applies to them as long as it did not deal with actual work that could endanger life.

It is clear that events like this organised by trade fabricators, can offer enormous assistance to installers by dealing with matters that deal with more than just what can be sold but the value that can be provided to customers in a more general way.

As many people are aware, sourcing hardware products that will be displayed either near the coast or in highly populated industrial areas can be very difficult, as brass or zinc based products pit and tarnish very quickly due to the salt in the air. This is particularly evident in areas within a 25 mile radius of the coast, or within 5 miles of high populated industrial areas.UAP are constantly looking for ways to improve their ever expanding product range, and have developed Nanocoast hardware - a range of door hardware products that are specifically designed for the coast. Nanocoast products are made from 304 grade stainless steel, and have also been salt spray tested to

ASTM B117 for 2,000+ hours. Not only do UAP offer an industry first lifetime coating guarantee on all Nanocoast products, and you can have confidence that the products will not pit, rust or corrode no matter what environments you put them in, the products are also extremely competitively priced.

You may wonder why UAP have taken the decision to use 304 grade stainless steel, instead of 200 grade or 316 grade stainless steel which some competitors use. As Ben Jennings, Marketing Manager at UAP, explains, the reason for us using 304 grade stainless steel is simple - it gives the products the best corrosion resistant without being too expensive. The 304 grade is an austenitic stainless steel which contains 18% chromium and 8%

nickel, and has low carbon content, giving excellent corrosion resistance in a wide variety of environments, and good resistance to oxidation. It is this 8% nickel content which gives the corrosion resistance at the coast.

Downgrading the stainless steel quality to a 200 series grade stainless steel means that even though they have similar mechanical and physical properties to the 304 grade, there is decreased nickel content. The nickel is replaced by manganese which results in weak corrosion resistance, and high carbon content leaves the stainless steel susceptible to stress corrosion cracking. On the other hand, the 316 series grade would dramatically increase the prices of the products even though the corrosion resistance only

slightly increases, with a nickel content of 10%. 316 it shares similar characteristics to 304 grade stainless steel in resistance to oxidation and durability, and you would usually use 316 when you need a higher resistance to solutions such as sulfuric acid and chlorides at high temperatures. In this sense, you can see why it seemed illogical not to use the 304 grade to produce our products.

Ben continues, So far, we have released three fully suited colour match ranges into our Nanocoast range; Mirror Polished Stainless Steel, PVD Gold and Satin Stainless Steel. The range includes door knockers, door viewers, letterplates, door handles, numerals, hinges, letterplate shrouds, identity slots, and our newly introduced pull handles and round door knobs.

Nanocoast products provide you with true quality, and the competitive prices make them exceptional value for money. Why take the risk with other products which have the potential to rust.

Recently, UAP Ltd have extended their Window Restrictor range by adding Fixed End Window Restrictors. These window restrictors are ideal for anyone that offers door and window security in their shop. Their design means that they cannot be unlocked by a user, making them ideal to be used in hospitals, schools, mental institutions and hotels, and for times when you what to make sure that the window will not be fully opened. According to the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (ROPSA), over 4,000 children in the UK fall out of windows and injure themselves each year.

These are not only babies, but are children up to 15 years. This just emphasises how important window restrictors are in the home and are a great way to take child safety measures. Consumers are constantly looking for devices to help protect children, and the fixed end window restrictor is a perfect

opportunity to make additional sales, especially if you already sell into places such as nurseries and schools.

Ben Jennings, Marketing Manager at UAP Ltd, says, Our Fixed End Window Restrictors are more durable and effective than other restrictors on the market. They can withstand over 100kg of weight as opposed to the industry standard of 50kg of force.

The cable on the window restrictor is 20cm in length, and allows a window to open up to 10cm. This means that rooms can safely be aired, without the possibility of the window being pushed out any further.

Not only will this protect your customers pets and children from falling from the window, but they are an adding window security device as the cable is made from hardened steel and very difficult to cut, as thus prevents intruders from gaining entry

via the most common burglary method, the window.

Ben continues, In order to allow consumers to colour match their window restrictors to their window handles and other furniture, we have launched our Fixed End Window restrictors in six different finishes! This includes White with a white cable, Brown with a brown cable, Black with a black cable, PVD Gold with a black cable, Chrome with a black cable, and Chrome with a transparent cable.

We believe this is the first time that websites, search engines and social media has taken the top spot from asking our nearest and dearest, says Jon Skinner, Joint Managing Director for Swish Window and Door Systems who funded the extensive research. The gap is likely to widen as more information is made available online. With family and friends

backing up research already done on the internet.

We asked what sources respondents would use to get information about windows. The three top answers were 67 percent of people research online, while 59 percent ask

friends and family. 40 percent of those polled said they used the installer as an expert for information. Adverts on TV, radio and magazines were also given as a source of information, but are much less important.

    GLASS & GLAZING

This month we see the biggest show on earth for glass and glass processing being held in Dsseldorf, Germany and with the latest topics being discussed by the leading lights of the sector.THe fuTure Of gLaSS in cOMing yearSGlass Technology Live (GTL) in Hall 11, is organised by Professor Stefan Behling and his team at the Institute for Building Construction at the University of Stuttgart, and is one of glasstecs marquee events and always draws huge crowds.

Products about to emerge in coming years are on display here, usually including the highlights from the various fields of application, and always with a focus on architecture. For example, one of the eye-catchers from the 2012 Facade and Construction theme was a window integrated into glazing without any visible framing.

In 2014, the highlighted themes at this special show, which covers about 2,500m2, will fall under the title Intelligent Glass and include the areas Intelligent Building Envelopes, Facade + Energy (Solar), Innovations in Glass, and Glass Design.

Consequently, some of the innovative exhibits awaiting visitors will represent sectors such as light directing, translucent glazing, composite elements in facades, glass and OLEDs as well as light and thin glass for architecture and displays.

cuTTing eDge TOPicSA high calibre trade symposium will accompany Glass Technology Live.

Embedded right in the exhibition space, a series of lectures on cutting edge topics will be presented there. All trade

fair visitors may attend this event free of charge.

Recognised presenters from leading research institutes, associations, companies and architecture firms will discuss in-depth a range of topics. Just like the special show, the symposium will hone in on the future of the glass industry.

The Symposium programme will be dedicated to a different theme on each day of the trade fair.

cOncenTraTeD infOrMaTiOn Directly adjacent to Glass Technology Live, glasstec visitors will find the Faade Center, featuring glass focused content geared toward facade designers, construction engineers, architects and the glass processing trades.

It consists of exhibitor presentations in Hall 11, innovative facade mockups at the nearby GTL special show and the Professional Center Glass + Facade, which offers information presented by institutes and associations.

A new component of the Facade Center

will be European Facade Networks efnMobile [sic] where students along with the University of Applied Sciences in East Westphalia-Lippe will create facade models live and offer facade consulting.

arcHiTecTure cOngreSSThanks to its broad range of glass products for use in architecture, glasstec attracts a large number of architects and building designers.

In addition, the supporting programme caters to this target audience by offering the Architecture Congress sponsored by the partners, Architektenkammer Nordrhein-Westfalen (Chamber of Architecture of North Rhine-Westphalia) and the Technical University Delft, as well as by Ostwestfalen-Lippe University of Applied Sciences.

Architects, structural engineers, climate engineers and facade designers will meet at the Congress Center East (CCD Ost) of the Dsseldorf Exhibition Centre on 22 October, the second day of the trade fair. The title of this years Congress is Glass 5.0 Design, Function, and Emotion.

Presenters will include renowned architects, e.g. Graham Dodd/Arup Fellow, Winy Maas/MVRDV and Paolo Cruz/University of Minho. The event is certified as professional continuing education (AKNW 4 lessons for architects and interior designers, IK-Bau NRW 4 time units). The admission fee is 49 and includes a glasstec ticket for two days.

ScienTific cOnferenceThe science and technology oriented engineered transparency conference specifically addresses target audiences from the research and development as well as the construction and implementation communities.

The latest trends and developments in the structural use of glass will be discussed, which means the event will

    GLASS & GLAZING

The recession may be fading but it damaged glasstec, the worlds biggest exhibition for glass and glass processing. Show Director, Birgit Horn, tells MyTradeTV Editor, Michael Gannon, why it is bouncing back. For any first time visitor from the UK to continental shows, the sheer scale of the exhibitions can be overwhelming. The second impression can be how advanced and sophisticated the products, systems and services are on display, manned by staff who never seem challenged by the numbers visiting, or from where they come from in the world.

Enormous stands are the order of the day, housed by massive halls that tend to go on and on. This is the image that was made on this trade editor when he made his first visit in 1998 and for the most part, this is as true now as it was then. glasstec takes place on 21-24 October in Dusseldorf, Germany, offering

professionals the latest developments in glass and glass processing with almost all the big players having an impressive presence.

There is no doubt that that the international recession had a bad impact on the event and when the Show Director, Birgit Horn, took over in 2009, the timing was an unfortunate one. Visitor numbers dropped and the exhibition contracted and the optimistic hopes for solarpeq the solar part of glasstec were dashed by the German government slashing the feed-in-tariffs rates; something the UK government followed.

These two factors left an obvious mark on how glasstec performed. We had an industry that was not operating at anything like full capacity with government policies that did serious damage to a burgeoning solar industry that glasstec was representing and encouraging, Birgit Horn told MYTTV.

Steps were taken in 2010 when the event was reduced by one day which may have partly accounted for the drop in attendance. Two years ago, glasstec was a success

in many ways but was having difficulties in keeping visitors figures up and 43,000 attended in that year.

Hopes for 2014 have reflected the state of play in the industry as it now finds itself.

Birgit Horn hopes to have as many visitors as last time and the exhibitors have remained at about the same number which was 1,162 in 2012. There is no solarpeq, which had some 100 exhibitors at its height but many will have solar systems on display.

Unlike many shows in the UK, glasstec is a truly international event 66% of its exhibitors are from abroad and 62% of visitors arrive from outside Germany. The UK figures in the top 10 of both exhibitors and visitors to glasstec.

Another positive factor is the satisfaction levels with 95% of visitors saying they were satisfied and most importantly, given the dire economic situation prevailing even in 2012, 94% stating they were likely to return.

Hoping this might occur is not good enough and Ms Horn acknowledges this. Our team has been putting in lots of work to make glasstec more accessible. We know that a trade show is a knowledge platform and must give extra benefit to the visitors.

Time has to be a crucial factor for any visitor, even though Dusseldorf is only one hours flight from London. The organisers have established an industry guide on its website www.glasstec-online.com and there is also a trend compass that shows which exhibitors are displaying products and services connected with specific themes.

One example that Ms Horn pointed to was so-called thin glass that is being developed to meet the expanding demand for triple glazing and its practical requirements.

glasstec has also been renowned for its additional events, especially its conferences and this year is no exception. The Glass Technology Live special show has been organised by Professor Stefan Behling and his team from Stuttgart University.

With these and nine massive halls to visit, one day is hardly enough. If you want to be successful, you have to take up to two days to get that additional insight into products and suppliers, advised Ms Horn.

For further information, visit the website: www.glasstec-online.com.

    MACO

Its taken a lot of work and late nights to get the NFAs into the position they today. What started out as an online experiment has turned into one of the most talked about ongoing industry events this year. All thanks to support from most areas of the industry. These past few weeks have been an immensely proud time both for the whole NFA team and myself. We have all worked very hard, and continue to work hard, to make sure the whole experience with the NFAs is as simple and fun as possible. We dont always get everything right, but we always work to improve anything we can. So to see so many of the finalists showing off their finalists logos all over their social media accounts, websites etc is a fantastic feeling for all of us. We have even had some tell us privately that they are adding the logos to their regular newsletters and literature.

Some of the numbers were getting are incredibly impressive. At the time of me writing this, we have passed the 900 registered users mark. These 900+ people have all either nominated, voted

or done both. Can any other industry awards claim to have such a massive level of engagement? It is also worth saying that the figure of 900 continues to rise on a daily basis. I expect that number to top the magical 1000 mark before too long.

I am also proud to say that the number of votes cast in this phase have already surpassed the total number of votes cast in the whole voting phase in 2013! Were not sure what the final number will be yet, but we can sure that it will be impressive. Every single vote counts therefore and if you havent yet taken part, this is your chance to do so.

I dont want to ramble on too much, so I think Ill call it a day right here. I want to say a massive thanks to all those who have taken part in some way, thanks to the sponsors which help make this happen, thanks to all the magazines that have decided to cover the NFAs this year and a big thanks to the NFA team that continues to help build this revolution in how we reward the best in our industry.

To all the finalists, good luck!

The Liniar PVCu range is designed and extruded by HL Plastics in Derbyshire, the heart of the UK. Launched in 2008, the last six years have seen the Liniar system become one of the industrys market leaders, due in no small part to its innovative approach to product design and development.Social media is a critically important part of Liniars marketing strategy as it enables us to reach out to, and engage with, followers of our brand on a personal level.

We try to aim for fun with a serious intent our Twitter feeds include corporate news such as our latest press releases, images from events were attending and latest product news, mixed in with humourous stuff weve seen, as well as conversational tweets with suppliers, customers and homeowners.

Having grown our Twitter followers from 300 to over 1,100 in less than a year, weve found it extremely valuable for responding quickly to requests for information and networking with people both within, and outside of, the fenestration industry.

One of our followers created the hashtag #LoveLiniar last year, which we like to use wherever possible!

Installers also love to show off their work on Twitter and well always re-tweet a good photo, so it helps them to get exposure too. Our in-house testing robot, Mark II even has his own Twitter account (@Liniar_robot), and is proud to be followed by the creator of R2D2!

Video is also a big focus for us as it enables us to show people exactly why they should use Liniar; so wed encourage

installers to subscribe to our YouTube channel to see installation and sales videos. We also use Facebook, LinkedIn and Google+ to a lesser degree; we think its important in this day and age to have a presence on the main channels to make the brand more accessible to a wider audience and give people more opportunities to get in touch with us.

Being a finalist in the category Composite and Panelled Doors 2014 for the National Fenestration Awards 2014, is further testament to the passion and commitment that is within Britdoors Group. Who are Britdoors Group? We are a UK manufacturer who designs and manufacturers all types of doors, including glass-reinforced polyester (GRP), thermoplastic composite doors, timber core composite doors, fire doors and solid timber doors.

Over the past 20 years we have sold more than 2 million composite doors to customers within numerous

sectors, including Retail and Trade, Distributors, Affordable Housing, Housebuilder and Main Contractor. Established in 2012 by acquiring market leading, trusted brands Homesafe Doors, Securidor and JCK Joinery, we can cater for all your external and internal door needs.

We are amongst a small number of UK companies with; the choice of so many different door products, the capacity to manufacture customised doors in-house and intellectual property rights linked to key aspects of our products, including colour skins, flush-glazing and fixing features.

Why vote for Britdoors Group? It is rare to find a UK door manufacture which specialises in all sectors, nor one sole provider who can cater for all interior and external door needs. Britdoors Group is that small minority that stands out proudly in a crowded marketplace, able to cater for multiple project, door and client requirements. Due to these reasons we think that Britdoors Group is a worthy contender to win the category Composite and Panelled Doors 2014.
