A DANCE TO REMEMBER What probably caught the attention of the audience

who had gathered at MGR Janaki College’s annual day was the beautifully executed thematic dance presentation ‘ Dasavatharam’. The efforts the girls had made were evi-dent in the precise way in which the piece was presented.

Dr. Premeela Gurumurthy, vice chancellor, Tamil Nadu Music and Fine Arts University, Chennai was the chief guest at this event held at the college premises on Feb 21. She gave a thought provoking speech on the importance of culture and relevance of music in modern times.

The special guest Dr. Palani. G. Periasamy, chairman, Le Royal Meridien, distributed the proficiency prizes.

It was difficult to miss the soulful invocation to Lord Krishna by a group of kindergarteners at Kumara Rani Chettinad Vidyalaya’s annual day held at R. A. Puram recently.

One grave at the Quibble Island Cemetery which borders the Adyar Estuary’s waters in MRC Nagar often sports fresh flowers or has people standing by it in a reflective mood.

It is the grave of one of India’s best known come-dian actor, dancer and singer, J. P. Chandra Babu.

He passed away on March 8, 1974 but his fans remember him, his music and his performances to this day - and some of them stop by at this cemetery to offer flowers and say a prayer. On Thursday last, well-wishers had left flowers on the gravestone.

Recalls film historian Theodore Bhaskaran (now living in Bangalore) of the day the actor died, “I was working in Chennai and was getting home to Sastri Nagar when all along the way I heard Chandra Babu’s songs being broadcast on the radio in tea shops. Then, as I passed the Quibble Island Cemetery, I saw a small crowd. Chandra Babu was being laid to rest.”

Born Joseph Panimayadasan Rodriguez, Chandra Babu struggled to get a break in films but once he got recognised, he was a star - and he was paid as much or some times more than the reigning Tamil film stars of his day, MGR and Sivaji Ganesan.

He acted in about 75 films and was credited with introducing ‘Madras bhashai’ in films. But a broken marriage and the ironies of filmdom badly affected him and as two of his film productions failed, Chandra Babu’s fortunes dipped and his personal life darkened.

Recalls Ramya Mani, “My dad used to tell us that Chandra Babu’s house was on Greenways Road. And word on the street was that there was a long winding drive way leading to a mezzanine level into which Chandra Babu would drive his car, directly into the house. My dad and his friends, as young boys had waited near the house once or twice to catch a glimpse of him as the car drove in.”

That grand house was never fully built as misfortune hit the actor. And the story goes that a few people of the film world had to conduct Chandra Babu’s funeral and burial.

Says Joseph Raja, a fan of the actor, “Even today, books are being written on him. That is Chandra Babu. He was the first actor to speak the Madras bhashai in films.”

Adds arts journalist Janaki Srinivasan, “He was a natural dancer. His timing was perfect.”

Open Air Liquor Bar

The business of the TASMAC-managed li uor shop opposite Thirumylai M TS station in Mylapore has been the cause of law and order and civic problems for some years. Agitations by local units of political parties as well

as civil society groups, petitions by Mylapore’s MLA and letters in the media have not brought any change.

In recent weeks, clients of the li uor shop have begun consuming li uor in the open spaces around this shop because the bar that used to be located alongside the shop was shut down. This develop-ment has further worsened the situation here.

Residents of Justice Sundaram Road have heaved a sigh of relief - finally, this potholed road has been relaid. Sceptics of this area though wonder if a road re-laying job that is done inside two hours will really let the road stay good for a long time.

Meanwhile, in several areas in the neighbourhood, roads/streets are being relaid by the Corporation.

An official in Ward 173 says that 11 roads have been sanctioned so far. He says, “One road, Bhagirathi Ammal Street, R. A. Puram has been repaired and laid. We have started

work on Srinivasapuram First Main Road, only part of that road and Srinivasapuram First Street will be laid. We are yet to work on Srinivasapuram 2nd Main Road, 2nd Street and 4th Street, Robertson Lane, Salaiyar Street and R. K. Nagar First Main Road”.

As regards other roads in the area, he says a proposal for local area roads that are in bad shape will be submitted in the next financial year - after April 1.

An official at ward 123 says, “Bharathiyar Street, Sundarajan Street, R. A. Puram 6th and 7th Main Road, Subramaniam Street and Venkataraman Street have been laid. On Tuesday night, work started at Kapali Thottam, Pallaku Managaram (PM Nagar) and Justice Sundaram Road.

At ward 126, an official says that 2nd Trust Main Road, Mandavelipakkam has been laid. He says, “Road cut work ( meaning relaying only parts of road dug up for civic jobs) is going on at a few roads including Srinivasan Street, Sivaraman Street, Sadayappan Street and Adanjan Mudali Street. We hope to complete this work in a week”.

Well-known scholar, teacher, public speaker and writer Dr. Goda Venkateswara Sastry passed away on February 27. He was a resident of R. A. Puram.

Born in 1948, he belonged to Veginadu Brahmin family. He was the first son of Krishnaveny and Goda Narayanaiah.

He completed his post-graduate studies in mathematics and got a doctorate in Advaita Vedanta

from the Rashtriya Samskrita Samsthan. He was a Kramanta-Svadhyayi in Rg Veda and

studied the six angas of Vedas. He had undergone the study of Darsanas Nyaya, Yoga, Purva Mimamsa and Advaita Vedanta. He had also studied Veda Bhasyas of Rg Veda and YajurVeda.

He also had a firm grounding in the Samskrit sahitya. He had four Siromanis to his credit. He had taught the sastras to many disciples and guided many persons in their doctoral studies at various universities.

He also taught the Vedas, Veda Bhasyas and Sas-tras to his sishyas and to people who were interested at various places in Chennai – Sankara Gurukulam, Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan and Sankara Vihar. He did this over the past 25 years.

Apart from the Vedas and Sastras, Dr. Goda Venkateswara Sastry was a Devi upasaka. He had the Purna Diksha from Br. Injikkollai Jagadeeswara Sastry, a doyen in Sri Vidya. He has given diksha to many disciples and guided them. Many books in Sri Vidya written by him have been published.

He had authored many books in Vedanta and other allied sastras. Some of the titles were – How to stop

Ageing: A Vedic Approach, Dasamahavidya Rahasyam – an original work on the worship of the Divine Mother, Moksha Swarupa Vicharam – an Advaitic point of view on liberation, Durga Sapta Sloki, Advaita Siddhi – A Tamil translation and Sri Tyagesa Maharathotsava Varnana slokas: English and Tamil translations.

He was also decorated with many titles – among them the ‘Advaita Vedanta Pracharaka Mani’ by Sri Sankaracharya of Kanchi Kamakoti Mutt and ‘Vedanta Chudamani’ by Sri Jagadguru Badari Sankaracharya Samsthanam, Sakatapuram.

He had retired as an officer from Reserve Bank of India, Chennai and had worked as director, Viswamitra Maharshi Vedic Research Centre, Madipadu, Andhra Pradesh till Dec. 2005.

K. S. Parvathy (Pattu), aged 87 years, passed away on March 6. She was the wife of late

K. S. Krishnamoorthy and was a resident of Mylapore since her birth.

Parvathy is survived by her son K. Sundararaman, daughter Saroja Krishnamur-thy and their families.

N. Ramaswami, a long-time resident of

Mylapore, passed away at his residence on First Street East Abhirampuram on January 27.

Ramaswami, fondly known to his generation of friends and family as Ramu, was born on May 1932

in Koothur and grew up in a house on the banks Cauvery in Mayavaram. He exhibited compelling talent in Carnatic vocal music at a young age and was trained by Mayavaram Ponnusamy Bhagavathar and Arivaram Lakshmanan Iyer.

In his teens, he competed in a Carnatic vocal competition and came second to none other than Dr. M. Balamurali Krishna. He started performing on All India Radio in his teens. During his late 20s, just before his marriage to his wife of 60 years Kamala, he moved to Madras. His opportunities at AIR came to an end around 1962-63, during the Sino-Indian war, when airtime became limited only to professionals.

Yet, Ramaswami’s passion, engagement and support of music persisted until the end of his life even though he never took to performing again. Over the decades, Ramaswami and his wife Kamala regularly hosted numerous students of music who came from afar to learn playing the violin from Lalgudi Jayaraman (to whom the Ramaswamis were related), and from the maestro’s children, Lalgudi Vijayalakshmi and Lalgudi GJR Krishnan.

In the past decade, they also opened their doors to students who came to learn ghatam from vidwan Ghatam Suresh who became nothing less than their surrogate son. Ramaswami’s friends knew him as a kind, calm and non-judgmental man - he was always well-dressed and went on evening walks with his friends in Nageswara Rao Park.

In his bright blue kurta and matching shawl, with his ‘Thevar Magan’-styled moustache and the thin, curly long hair falling on his shoulder, mridangam vidwan J. Vaidhyanathan was indeed the man of the evening.

Inside him, emotions were welling up - with a tear rolling down his face when he went down memory lane.

On Tuesday evening (March 6), Carnatic music

vidwans, family and friends and rasikas gathered at Raga Sudha hall in Luz to celebrate a special occasion – the Sangeet Natak Akademi decorating the Alwarpet resident Vaidhyanathan with an award, the nation’s highest that is given to the country’s artistes.

The award was presented to 43 eminent artistes (in music and in dance) by the president of India in January and Vaidhy or JV, as close friends call him was among the artistes who were honoured at Rashtrapathi Bhavan, Delhi.

Tuesday’s event was ideated by kanjira vidwan B. S. Purushotham, who frequently performs alongside Vaidhyanathan. “Artistes who accompany the main artiste at concerts rarely get atten-tion and respect and we were keen that Vaidhyanathan

must be given due recogni-tion,” said Purushotham.

Felicitating the star of the evening were mridan-gam greats Umayalpuram Sivaraman, T. K. Murthy who is in his 90s and is Vaidhyanathan’s guru and Srimushnam Raja Rao, violin vidwan T. Rukmini (who is in her 80s and has accompanied Vaidhyana-than’s father, the late vocalist and guru D. K. Jayaraman on his India and foreign tours),

actor Y. Gee. Mahendra, concerts promoter Vedanth Ramanujam and senior vocalist Vijay Siva.

These guests took turns to touch on Vaidhayanathan’s unique style of playing the mridangam, the imprint he leaves at a concert and the impact he makes on rasikas.

Vaidhyanathan recalled his early days when his father woke him up at 4 a.m. to start practice sessions, his father’s oft-repeated advice ‘to work hard’ and of the long hours of learning he had under guru T. K. Murthy, who did not bother about fees and did not mind teaching for four or five hours at a stretch and of his special regard for his aunt, the famous D. K. Pattammal (“I sought her blessings

before every concert and before every tour I made and she always wished me great things in life.”)

He also made it a point to remember members of his family, especially his wife who had helped him grow and manage his busy career and he had a spe-cial gift for the man who repairs his mridangams.

It was an evening when many other well-wishers greeted Vaidhyanathan. Among them was playback singer Vani Jayaram who had a special word and a ponnadai for him.

Short versions of konnakol and nadaswar-am music opened the event, lending a different touch to it. The konnakol concert was by Bangalore-based B C Manjunath and the tavil concert was by Thirupoongur T. G. Muthukumaraswami and Sivapuri T. R. P. Ramamurthy.

Condition of saleswomen and men at retail stores

We observe that the sales girls and boys working in local textiles stores and provision shops are not provided with stools or chairs to relax if there is no business inside. These people tell us that they are supposed to stand for 10 to 12 hours in the shops. Imagine the plight of young women who have to address personal and health issues.

The power of ‘G’ on the number plate of a car ostensibly belonging to a government officer was seen on Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai, Mylapore on March 2 afternoon.

This car was parked on the road between Savera Hotel and New Woodlands Hotel and inspite of the demand from Traffic Police to move out or be hauled up, the driver of the car challenged the police.

Kallukkaran Street and the parallel street (which is opposite the temple) have not been relaid for years.

Venkatasamy Street must be relaid too

Mylapore Times had reported on Chennai Corporation’s plans to relay streets / roads in the Mylapore neighbourhood.

Venkatasamy Street which is opposite Apollo Pharmacy and directly leads to San Thome High Road needs attention. This being a link street, the vehicles using it are many and traffic is high and the road is in bad shape.

This road was dug up to lay water pipelines but repairs were not done.

Chennai Corporation must relay this street.

Cloth store parks vans on street, disturbs residents

We live on Seethammal Main Road and we are facing problems posed by the parking of vans that belong to a private cloth store here.

When our letter was published in the past in this newspaper, the owner of the cloth store moved out his vehi-cles but he has gone back to his old ways now. He does not seem to care about local residents.

Woes of cooking gas customers

On booking for a refill of cooking gas cylinder, we are charged high even today. In addition, we have to pay Rs.150 annually for checks of the cylinder tube, for possible gas leakage and any blockage in burner. This in an additional burden on consumers.

Also, the gas cylinder delivery man demands Rs.20 for every delivery. Why must we pay him when he is paid a salary?

I have been reading and re-reading a document that Sandhya Sridhar mailed me this past week.

It is to do with issues on local wards, grassroots governance and basic issues that affect people in our neighbourhoods.

Sandhya Sridhar is part of an informal collective of south Adyar residents, mostly young women who have realised that being detached from everyday issues that make or break the lives of residents of a neighbourhood has contributed to weak local governance and insulated administration.

The group has realised that most people who reside in areas like Adyar live in their own world and are content to murmur and swear when their street lights do not burn or their roads are not relaid properly.

This group has come to know that most people are completely ignorant of local governance and politics. It also admits that they too lived in cocoons.

So their group which is called ‘Voice of People’ has decided that there is something positive that can be done now that local elections - elections to elect people at the ward level to the city council - have to be held.

The group conducted a survey - partly online, partly on the ground - to understand issues in the neighbourhoods.

Its focus has been four wards in zone 13. Just now, a study of Ward 181 has been documented.

The document looks at the civic and social structures in this area. It lists issues that need to be underlined. It also records the response of people to the survey.

Sandhya and her colleagues hope they can create a platform for ward councillors, residents and officials to interact, build an online/offline space that will detail local projects/tenders/complaints/ success stories. Create a Smart Ward.

The group has a lot on its hands. Most importantly, how can it trigger pro-activeness among residents and sustain the endeavor?

From my personal experience, I have realised that most citizens are content to carve and feather their lives in their houses or apartments, complain aloud when things go wrong on their street or in their colony or raise a voice occasionally.

The thin and fragmented community groups rarely keep the focus and limp along.

Our MP, MLA and councillors need to be engaged and audited. Our state agencies must be made transparent and accountable.

To do this, we need a strong citizens group.

I. Adhavan, a class VII student of the Chennai High School at Eldams Road, will be flying to the USA and will tour the NASA facility there.

This student was declared the winner at a science competi-tion held by the Rotary Club of Madras East in association with the Corporation of Chennai in the city in early February.

K. Revathy, the principal of the school says, “Adhavan has always been interested in science.

He would scan the newspapers every day and cut out interesting science articles. He was selected as the winner from almost 420 students across 70 Corporation schools. Another student from our school R. Sriram too made it to the final round.”

Mylapore MLA, R. Nataraj complimented Adhavan and his teachers for the achievement.

Revathy says Adhavan’s father is a painter and his mother is a homemaker. “They really struggle to make ends meet,” she adds.

Adhavan will be one among eight students who will be taken on a fully-funded trip to NASA.

National Aeronautics and Space Administra-tion (NASA) oversees the civilian space programmes of USA.
