Thamizh film ‘Chennai 600028’, from midnight till about 2.30 a.m., blasting the music on large speakers as the shoot was on.

Rakesh says he called up Abiramapuram police and while a patrol team landed at the venue it could not get the crew to pack up because it kept assuring the police the shoot was only for a short time.

Rakesh wonders if the film crew had valid permit

for the shoot and how such an event could be allowed at dead of night in a residential area.- Photo courtesy: Rakesh Raghunathan

n Letter section has been held over this week

How did Kennedy Street/s get this name? The two teeny-weeny streets that run off from the area

where Our Lady of Light Church is located?

Was there a Kennedy of royal blood or large whiskers who once lived in this area, once a scrub forest and small, muddled water bodies filled with water that flowed eastwards from the overflowing tanks of the plains of Teynampet and Mambalam?

Or was there a new-rich Mylaporean whose father had migrated from the rice bowl of Tanjore, built a large garden house in the Luz neighborhood and called that home ‘Ken-nedy Villa’ and this then gave the twin streets the name?

One Mylaporean who dabbles in local histories says that a community of Kannada-speaking herdsmen who tended to cattle or goats and supplied milk to the neighbourhood and lived in this area may have given rise to a corrupted version of the name.

We asked this of Vijaya Sridharan recently when we had long interviews with her. Mylapore Times is documenting local life histories for its archives, recording the lives and times of people whose threads run deep locally.

Vijaya is the great grand-daughter of Janakiammal who lived and owned many houses in and off Kennedy Street. So it was but natural to ask Vijaya how Kennedy Streets came to be. But she couldn’t enlighten us.

Maybe you can, if your family has been living in Luz since the late 19th century.

A place like Mylapore with a history that goes back, far, far back in time holds loads of social histories. But the stories of the landed, the honoured, the famous and the decorated get recorded in different ways.

This can only be a biased record of Mylapore. A marina-tion of partiality, I may call it. Because there are lots and lots of others whose lives also make a place and its life.

One of my Madras Auto Stories which I post on my social media page touches on the settlers in early Raja An-namalai Puram. A time when the banks of the Buckingham Canal was a rich swathe of greens and vegetables raised for local consumption. Once cultivation was abandoned, these plots turned into untamed wild vegetation. And to these parts in R. A. Puram, migrants drove their dozen-odd goats to graze. This went on till the neighbourhood was plotted and got packed with bungalows and in between, pocket houses of the migrants who did odd jobs or drove cars and autos like my story-teller.

Certain life stories get marinated well and are retold time and again. The histories of the famed advocates of Pelathope, of the fifty and more great minds of Edward Elliots Road ( now called Dr. Radhakrishnan Salai), the prominent Catholic families of San Thome High Road.

Do we get to read or hear of the social stories of Lala Thottam in Luz, or of Nochikuppam alongside the Marina or of the migrants of the Mandavelipakkam ‘kuttai’?

To mark Women’s Day, we chose to talk to a small set of

women, ordinary people who struck on their own through tough times to make it big in their lives.

A young nurse, a senior citizen who still cooks and sells home-made food, a woman who had made a success of a pharmacy and another who partners her husband to run a hugely popular Mess in this neighbourhood.

The feature appears in this issue of Mylapore Times. Read it. And do let us know of others whose stories must be told.

Rukmini Venkatraman, my mother who passed away on Sunday, February 23, at the

age of 92 at her daugh-ter Dr Sarojini Para-meswaran’s home in Kil-pauk, was for a major part of her life a resident of the Alwarpet-Abhiramapuram quarter of the city.

Born in a highly liter-ate family in Kerala, she

came to Chennai in 1945, when she married P. N. Venkatraman, a son of scholar V. Narayanan MAML, and Sarada, daughter of Justice P. R. Sundara Iyer, one of the most distin-guished of the legal luminaries of Mylapore.

Tiny, soft-spoken Rukmini then came to live in ‘Suprabha’, a two-storeyed house on Murrays Gate Road, a house shared by her husband, a bank officer, and his elder brother P. N. Sundaresan, the cricket correspondent of The Hindu.

She was a talented woman, trained in Carnatic music and blessed with a sweet voice, and academically brilliant—until the household responsibilities of a joint family that straddled Murrays Gate Road and Eldams Road meant she had to be content with completing Intermediate, the equivalent of today’s class XII.

Amma, who had learnt to play the veena in her teen years, surprised the family in her for-ties by acquiring some proficiency in the sitar.

She also took Sanskrit lessons well into her seventies, passing a couple of exams in the language. My father passed away aged 73 in August 1992, and Amma then took over as our sole parent, shepherding her six children, their spouses, grandchildren and great grandchildren with love, generosity and total impartiality through good times and bad.

She was one of the most popular members of the P. R. Sundara Iyer and R. Sivaram-akrishna Iyer families, two prominent families that produced many a celebrity in a wide range of fields.

Her son said she was very popular among her students for her dedication, simplicity, love and affection.

Post retirement, she was closely associated with innumerable religious, social and charita-ble causes. She is survived by four daughters and a son. The family can be contacted at 9940185572.

K. R. Rajaraman, aged 98 years, retired district revenue officer, government of Tamil Nadu passed away on February 6.

Some of the key posts he held during his service includes that of revenue division officer, Ariyalur, personal assistant ( general )

to collector, Tiruchirap-palli in the early seventies.

A passionate and com-petent astrologer, astrolo-gy was his passion and he did free consultations to many after his retirement. He was a key committee member of Samprokshan-am of Sri Marundeeswarar Temple, Thiruvanmiyur win the early eighties.

He was resident of Mylapore for more than two decades. The family resides at ‘Madhurams’, Balakrishna Street, Mylapore. Contact - 9841691799.

‘Tambura’ S. Venkataraman is how he was known in Carnatic music circles. For, he

accompanied scores of musicians, from the young to the big names across his long career in music.

This senior artiste passed away on Feb.23.

Born on Oct.10, 1927 in Umayalpuram in Thanjavur district to U. S.

Sundaresa Iyer and Valambal, Venkataraman soaked in music - his father was a vocalist, a music critic and a friend of music maestro Semmangudi Srinivasaiyer.

Venkataram studied at P. S. High School Mylapore, attended a course in physical educa-tion and went on to work as a P. T. teacher at P. S. School for some 30 years.

His biodata states that in 1948, he was casually invited to play on the sruti box at a harmonium concert at a local temple and that was his debut on a concert stage.

His music guru Rama Iyengar, a neighbour then encouraged him to go on stage regularly and thus began his long, distinguished music career. From K. J. Yesudoss to D. K. Pattammal, Mandolin U. Shrinivas to D. K. Jayaraman, Venkatraman accompanied the greats and travelled widely, in India and abroad, playing on the tambura at prestigious music festivals.

He is bereaved by three sons ( Kalyana Raman plays the mridangam) and two daugh-ters ( Girija plays the tambura).

R. Balasubramanian of Abiramapuram passed away on Dec.5.

He was born in Chennai on Nov. 29, 1935 in Chennai to Rangas-wamy and Saraswati. He entered the workforce at the age of 22 and in 1957, joined Philips India, where he worked until his retirement.

He married Vasantha in 1961 and had 2 sons. The family has lived at different places, all of them in Mylapore, and currently resides in Abhiramapuram.

The family said he was a keen Carnatic music rasika and enjoyed sport (especially cricket) and was also a voracious reader. “He was very passionate in discussing national and local politics with friends and relatives,” a relative said.

SMALL WOMEN, BIG STORIESIn connection with Women’s Day, Mylapore Times profiles four women of the neighbourhood whose lives tell different but positive tales.

Reported by Dheepthi O. J.

NADHIYA CATHERINE MARY

From living in a small, dinghy house in crowded Lala Thottam to renting a two-bedroom apartment in Luz, Nadhiya Catherine Mary has come a long way. With grit and perseverance, this young woman has come up in life after facing several challenges.

Says Nadhiya, “My father Devdass was the sole earning member of the family. He worked as a daily wage worker and used to earn Rs.200 or 300 a day. My mother Lily Mary would also work sometimes to make ends meet.”

Though her parents struggled financially, Nadhiya says they made sure to educate their children. Nadiya has three siblings (two sisters and a brother). “I studied in a government school in Royapettah. There were times when electric-ity would be cut for close to a week as we didn’t have money to pay electricity bills. And we used to sleep in a congested space.” However, the difficult times, Nadhiya says made her stronger.

“I used to do well in studies. Three of us sis-ters also used to sing in the choir in Luz church. Impressed by our performance, the church mem-bers offered to help us. “

Then, through scholarships provided by the church, Nadhiya completed her schooling. She later did a nursing course from the College of Nursing at St.Isabel’s Hospital in Luz.

At college too, Nadhiya faced a chal-lenge - of switching from a Tamil medium school. “Classmates used to make fun of me.” But Nadhiya did not lose hope and continued stud-ies. Soon she was employed at St.Isabel’s as

a nurse and began to support her family. Nadhiya then went on to clear Prometric exam

to find work at Saudi Arabia for a few years. “I cleared the exam in the first attempt itself,” she says proudly. “Well-wishers and friends promptly helped me with some two lakh rupees that was required to pay for the processing fee.”

However, she had to return to Chennai when her father passed away. She then joined as a quality executive at St.Isabel’s Hospital and she continues to work here. Nadhiya has successfully settled all her siblings. One sister has completed BCA (Bachelor of Computer Application) and is working in the admin department of a private company, and the other one is married. Her brother has completed a diploma in automobile technology and is employed. Ask Nadhiya what kept her going through the difficult times.

“I believe bad days are only temporary. I always had positive vibrations around me. Sofie Kurian ma’am (women’s group member of Luz church), the nuns at the church and my parents motivated and kept encouraging me to move forward.”

Now, this 33-year-old wants to support others who are struggling.

EASWARILosing her mother at

the age of 5, did not break the spirit of Easwari alias Alageswari. A resident of Venkatesa Agraharam Street, she was born in a village in Nagercoil. The 70- year-old Easwari has been running a small Mess ( food place) in Chitrakulam West Street, Mylapore for some 30 years now.

Says Easwari, “My mother was the only sup-

port for our family. She sold appalam and vadams and wove to earn a living. My father lived elsewhere and we did not receive much support from him.”

Though her mum’s passing was a setback for Easwari she gathered courage and continued the home business that her mother did. “I was fortunate that my mother taught me all the skills before she passed away in God.”

A firm believer, Easwari says she did not give up and continued to support her family through her younger days. Later, she started the Mess, serving simple home-made food. She saved money to settle her chil-dren (Easwari has one daughter and two sons). “My husband, who is a shastrigal also supports the family.”

“Many would discourage me and say that an old woman like me should sit at home and rest. But I wouldn’t bother as work was important to support my family.”

She says fetching water, clean-ing vessels and cooking gets tough at times. “But, I manage to do with the help of some of my clients.”

Easwari popularly called as Mami here has also worked abroad for some time. “Even though I’m uneducated, I have managed to work in New York and Washing-ton. I used to cook for families in Mylapore when they went abroad.”

She intends to continue working for a few more years. “Two of my grandchildren are yet to com-plete education. I believe one has to work until he or she is active.”

JAYANTHI MOHANAKUMAR

For Jayanthi Mohanakumar, opening a medical shop in Mylapore was all about tapping her skills and talent to its full potential. Born and brought up in Nallappan Street, she did her schooling at Lady Sivaswamy Ayyar Girls’ Higher Sec-ondary School, Mylapore and completed her graduation (B. A. Economics) from Queen Mary’s College. “After that, I learnt shorthand and typewriting and worked as a stenographer at a few companies.”

She took a break after getting married and had two kids. “Then, I realised that I had a natural inclination towards medicine as most of my relatives had a medical shop,” she says.

That was when she opened a medical shop on Kamarajar Salai (It has now been shifted to Norton Road, Mandaveli). “It took two years for me to get trained in this line. I used to refer books and learn about medicine from medical reps who visited the shop. I also learnt from one of my friends who ran a pharmacy.”

All this was made possible with the support from her family. “My husband, mother and mother-in-law would take turns to look after my two daughters.”

Initially, the 57-year-old says she found it difficult to gain regular customers. “As many shops offered discounts and online ordering facility, I found it hard to retain customers.” However, with her outgoing nature, Jayanthi built a big base of clients. She says, “If senior citizens visit our shop (Sri Iyappa Medical) I offer to help them. I also visit their houses and help administer their medicines.”

LATHA KRISHNANWaking up at 3.30 a.m., Latha

Krishnan, who manages the popular Gomathi Mess cooks hundreds of idli and vada, and lots of pongal as early as 6.30 a.m. From chopping veggies to cooking she does this all with the help of her husband Ramakrishnan. After all, the Mess has to cater to hundreds of hungry regulars. The couple has been running the Mess since 2004. However, the 50-something-old says, the job is not exhausting because “I love my job.”

Born in Thoothukudi, Latha schooled here. “I later learnt Hindi, shorthand and typewriting too.” After marriage, she shifted to Mylapore. “My husband used to run a share market business but that collapsed. To support the family, I had to take up this business.”

Says Ramakrishnan, “It came naturally to us as we were both passionate about food.” On days when the crowd is big, Latha says it does become stressful. “But we manage it patiently. Customers too have been very supportive. They understand our situation and wait for the food.”

“While I was at work, my mother-in-law and father-in-law took care of my daughter at home,” Latha says that has helped.

Ramakrishnan says his wife plays a vital role in running the business. “Her role is crucial. On days when she takes a break due to illness, we have had to cut a few items on the menu.”
