The space shuttle and its crew of six will departthe International Space Station late Sunday night. They worked to repair one of the space station’s airpurifiers and straightened out the suits that wereused in four spacewalks. The final spacewalk of themission, on Friday, completed the US portion ofstation construction. Now that the spacewalks areover, Mission Control told the astronauts they “canbask in the glow of a job well done.”

Shuttle pilot Gregory Johnson said it will bebittersweet to leave. He and his crewmates installeda $2 billion physics experiment at the orbitingoutpost, as well as an extension pole and a platformfull of spare parts. “It’s been a fantastic mission,”Johnson said in a series of news interviews. “It’s thesort of mission that astronauts dream of having.”

Johnson said he and his colleagues are spendingtheir final hours at the space station doing“everything we can do to help the space station outbefore we return to Earth.” The station is so bignow, he said, that sometimes he takes a wrong turnand finds himself in the wrong chamber.

Endeavour is scheduled to return to Floridabefore dawn Wednesday, 16 days after blastingoff. After Sunday night’s undocking, Johnson willguide Endeavour through a victory lap around thespace station. He said he’ll try to maintain a good

TechCrunch point-ed out a posting on thejobs page titled “Soft-ware Engineer, DesktopSoftware” at Face-book’s recently-openedSeattle office

The descriptionreads: “The desktopsoftware team is a newteam at Facebook basedout of Seattle, WA. Wewill be working on newproducts that we expectto deliver to millions ofusers’ computers to helpmake their entirecomputing experiencemore social. Facebookis seeking experiencedsoftware engineers inSeattle to join thisteam.”

Interestingly en-ough, Facebook isbuilding this team forthe desktop before iteven has an iPad app.The lack of the iPad appis also curious con-sidering Facebook’siPhone app is the mostdownloaded applicationof all time.

Could Facebook bebuilding a desktop app?

Possibly, but Tech-Crunch notes that it“doesn’t seem to makea lot of sense given theirstated (over and overagain) commitment toHTML5 and that beingthe key driver for whythey don’t have an iPadapp.”

Last fall, FacebookCEO Mark Zuckerbergaddressed the absenceof an iPad app.

“iPad’s not mobile,”he said. “I don’t meanto be rude to Apple. iPadjust isn’t mobile in thesame way [an iPhone]is.”

It’s unclear whetheror not Facebook willeventually cave andbuild an official iPadapp. For now it seemswe might see anincreased emphasis onthe desktop.

More sleep may cut kids’ risk of obesityDUNEDIN, 29 May—Youngsters

who do not get enough sleep on aregular basis are more likely to beoverweight, a new study has found.

Conversely, when children gotmore shut-eye, they had a reductionin body mass index (BMI) and asignificant drop in their risk of beingoverweight, the researchers found. The investigators also found lowerBMIs resulted from differences in fatmass (not any effect on fat-free mass, such as muscle), indicating that poorsleep has negative effects on bodycomposition.

In conducting the study, RachaelTaylor, a research associate professorin the department of human nutritionat the University of Otago in Dunedin,New Zealand, and colleaguesfollowed 244 children from the age of3 years to 7 years. Every six monthsthe children’s weight, height, BMI

and body composition were measured, and their sleep and dietary habits wererecorded. The children also woreaccelerometers (devices that monitorbody movement) to assess their levelof physical activity. Additional factorsknown to be associated with BMI inkids were also taken into account, such as the children’s birth weight andtheir mother’s level of education andincome. The study, published online26May in BMJ, revealed that the childrengot an average 11 hours of sleep perday. Those who consistently slept less, however, had an increased risk ofhaving a higher BMI by the time theyturned 7 years old. On the other hand, among 3- to 5-year-olds, each extrahour of sleep per night was linked to areduction in BMI of 0.49 and a 61percent drop in the risk of beingoverweight or obese by the age of 7.

OAKLAND, 29 May—Whether or not awoman will developdiabetes during pre-gnancy can be predictedup to seven yearsbefore she evenconceives, new res-earch suggests. In thestudy of 580 ethnicallydiverse women, in-vestigators found thatroutine evaluations ofblood sugar and bodyweight — long beforepregnancy—could helpdetermine those atgreater risk for thecondition, according tothe report published inthe 26 May onlineedition of the American

Journal of Obstetrics &Gynecology.

Gestational diabetesmellitus is a complicationof pregnancy that causesglucose intolerance andcan increase the risk forpreterm delivery andcesarean sections. Thiscondition, which occursin as many as 7 percentof pregnancies in theUnited States, can alsolead to health issues forthe affected babies laterin life, such as obesity, diabetes and metabolicdisease.

In conducting thestudy, researchers at theKaiser Permanente Di-vision of Research in

Oakland, Calif, foundthat women who hadknown risk factors fordiabetes and heartdisease (such as highblood pressure, highblood sugar and beingoverweight) prior toconception were also atgreater risk for ge-stational diabetes.

In fact, having highblood sugar levels andbeing overweight madewomen 4.6 times morelikely to developgestational diabetes thanother women who didnot have those riskfactors, the investigatorsfound.

BoE chief economist says Bleak years ahead for BritainLONDON, 29 May—Britain faces a “bleak time”

over the next two years due to low economicgrowth, the Bank of England’s chief economistsaid Saturday.

Spencer Dale indicated that interest rates wouldrise this year. They were held at a record low of0.50 percent this month, as anaemic British growthoffset surging inflation. Britain’s central bank hasheld the rate for more than two years.

“I think the next year or two will be a relativelybleak time. I think we have relatively hard timesahead,” Dale told the BBC.

“I am not confident about the strength of therecovery, particularly in terms of the weakness wesee in the household sector and the implications

Why fathers have post-natal depression

Toronto couple defend move to keep baby’s sex secret

Mr Stocker and Ms Witterick saythe decision to keep Storm’s sex asecret was “a tribute to freedom”.

Men can feel the stress and responsibility of father-hood weighing heavily on their shoulders.— INTERNET

LONDON, 29 May — AGloucester man has beenacquitted of murdering hissix-month-old daughter, after saying he had hadpost-natal depression. Thecase of Mark Bruton-Young has put the issue ofmen who struggle to copewith becoming fathers inthe headlines. One out ofevery seven new mothershas post-natal depression— but, according to theFatherhood Institute, oneout of every 10 fathers aredepressed both before andafter their baby is born.

The peak time for fa-thers’ depression isthought to be betweenthree and six months afterthe birth. Like women, theycan struggle with the hugelife changes a baby brings, says Fatherhood Instituteresearch head AdrienneBurgess. ”Hormones, lackof sleep, increased respon-sibility and general lifestresses can apply to menjust as much to women,”

she said. “And if their part-ner is depressed, then menare more likely to be too.”Men and women whohave pre-existing mentalhealth problems are moreat risk of developingdepression after the birthof a child.

But a father’s depres-sion can begin during preg-nancy, when relationshipsare already changing.Fathers can feel left outwhile their partner is thefocus of increased atten-tion. Association for Post-natal Illness counsellor LizWise says: “Women canfeel they do things best,

like changing a nappy orfeeding.

“They can be quick tocriticise their partners andtake over. “They don’tthink about how it couldundermine a man’s confi-dence. —Internet

TORONTO, 29 May — A Torontocouple are defending their decision tokeep their infant’s sex a secret in orderto allow the child to develop his or herown gender identity. Kathy Witterickand David Stocker have been widelycriticised for imposing their ideologyon four-month-old Storm.

The family were the subject of arecent profile in the Toronto Star news-paper. In an e-mail, Ms Witterick wrotethat the idea that “the whole world mustknow what is between the baby’s legsis unhealthy, unsafe, and voyeuristic”.Ms Witterick, 38, and Mr Stocker, 39,

have also been criticised for the mannerin which they are raising their two sonsJazz, five, and Kio, two.

The boys are encouraged to choosetheir own clothing and hairstyles —even if that means wearing girls’ clothes— and to challenge gender norms. Jazzwears his hair in long braids, and theboys are “almost exclusively assumedto be girls,” Mr Stocker told the TorontoStar.

The child’s grandparents do not knowStorm’s sex, the Toronto Star reported, and have grown weary of explaining thesituation, but are supportive.—Internet

Open champion.Top seed and defend-

ing champion Nadal madeit through to the fourthround with a 6-1, 6-3, 6-0win over Croatian quali-fier Antonio Veic in a cen-tre-court mismatch.
