Assignment 1: Write a 500 written analysis of representation of age and social class. You must make reference to the micro areas of mise en scene and camera, using appropriate terminology. In the Sit Com, ‘People just do nothing’, we can see that it is set in a modern day, poverty and lower class filled London. It is a comedy show set out to show the stereotypes, which are showed through the various different characters within the show. The episode I watched (series 2 episode 1) revolves around the every day life of people of similar social class as the characters in the show.

This episode in particular shows a christening which the characters themselves, due to their ‘idiocy’ and for comedic sense to the show, they call it jus a “Christian”, in context this would be said “You’re going to be Christian’d Angel.” Most of the characters are also unemployed, except for Chabuddy who is self-employed and owns his own business, which it seems he keeps changing since due to his stereotypical character of an illegal immigrant setting up business in England, he doesn’t seem to be very successful in what he does. The other main event going on during the episode is the competition between ‘Decoy’ and ‘Beats’, both competing to be the godfather for their friend ‘Grindah’s’ Daughter, Angel. We can also see another stereotype during this as we can notice the ethnicity of Angel doesn’t match with her parents, and only with Decoy’s ethnicity. This is also a stereotype within their culture, Decoy has obviously had the child rather than who everyone blindly thinks is the actual father, ‘Grindah’. This is hinted a lot, for example when Beats asks Decoy why he is always there for Angel and Decoy simply replies with “I dunno I just am…”, obviously he knows, as well as Michelle, Angel’s mother when she says to ‘Grindah’ that maybe they shouldn’t have Decoy as the father as it would jut be “weird”. ‘Grindah’ is completely blind to the fact that Decoy is blatantly the kid’s actual blood related father, this says a lot about their social class since cheating is a stereotype which is quite popular within this lower class of social class.

Another social class representative which I also mentioned before would be illegal immigrants. People of Britain constantly complain about them coming over to the country and taking all the potential jobs which are running short. A stereotype well known throughout England is the illegal immigrants and their many businesses which you can find all over Britain, though mainly in England.

Chabuddy is that stereotype’s representative within this show, and clearly shows that stereotype, in quite a comedic way. He lacks the skills a normal business man would have, and instead just takes to bigging himself up when talking to Michelle, for example saying things such as “Oh yeah I can do anythin’ man.” And putting himself out there, almost as if he is willing to sell you anything he possibly could, just for him to make a bit of money. Even in the end once he fails to produce a T-Shirt for Michelle which she likes, he takes to going round to another shop which sells shirts, buying them from there and returning to sell them the new shirts which he hadn’t even made himself, obviously for profit. This says quite a bit about his social class, and he really does represent the social group he is in well, as well as being a generally funny character to watch.

The use of camera and mis-en-scene could be used to represent the social classes of the characters. Mainly towards the beginning of the show, whn the camera is looking around them with the high-rise flats, the high rise flats could actually represent their life and how they’re trapped into that life with no escape, or ven if there is an escape, it would be really hard to do so. The high-rise flats tower over them and surround them, enclosing them in the estate in which they live in, it is kind of like a cycle of their life, they are born in the estate, like a zoo, grow up in the estate and live the exact same life as their parents, trapped in this estate, surrounded by the same people, family and high-rise flats. The camera angles throughout the show are usually looking down on the characters, as well as a few shots like the scenes where they are rapping, the camera looks more hand-held, since it is very shaky, this could represent their lifestyle, and financial situation as it is very unstable, shaky, like the camera. When we see the camera looking down on the characters, we can imagine the camera as us, and as we are right now watching these characters, looking down on their social class, which in fact they may be trapped in.

All the characters mix in well with the others despite being a drug addict, possibly showing that they are all of the same social class, though for different reasons, some are on drugs, some are cheaters and others are just your stereotypical modern day ‘chav’ like figure. Overall their social class is all really low and they are obviously, quite clearly not in the best of financial situations due to various hints throughout the episode, looking like they barely managed to make the ‘Christianing’ possible.

Assignment 2: Task 1: Prepare flat plans for a new college magazine, to include a front page and contents page. Task 2: Create the front page of the magazine using Photoshop and a downloaded font from DaFont.com.
