companies said over 230 jobs,”Martin said. Those jobs pay between$30,000 and $60,000 a year.

Companies who need skilledmachinists include Pratt & Whitney ofNorth Berwick, which makes jetengines and recently announced it's

hiring 400 workers. Hussey Seating,also of North Berwick, is adding 70jobs, Martin said. Other businessesthat are hiring include those thatmanufacture medical devices,bioplastics, metal fabrication,

electronics, food products andtextiles, Martin said.

Workers ages 18 to 24 have thehighest unemployment rate, “yetmembers of our manufacturingassociation echo the concerns of theircounterparts all over the country; theycannot find a skilled work force to fillhundreds of thousands of jobs goingunfilled because of the lack ofcandidates,” Martin said. That'shampering business, she said.“Companies turn down work becausethey don't have the work force to fillthe orders.”

Part of the problem is that the publicdoesn't know what precisionmachining is. Martin said thetechnology is used to makespecialized parts for all kinds ofthings.

“If you are flying in an airplane (ordriving a car), you want to be sure theparts in the car or plane are perfect,”Martin said. “You can't say 80 or 90percent is good enough. It doesn'twork that way.”

A skilled machinist can go anywherein the world and get a good-payingjob, officials said May 1, unveiling anew program to lure Maine highschool students to that field.

The Maine Community CollegeSystem, the ManufacturersAssociation of Maine and Great BayFoundation have joined forces andcreated a new program, Future forME, Maine Community CollegeSystem President John Fitzsimmonssaid May 1 at a news conference.

The program next year will offer$4,500 scholarships to 28 highschool graduates.

“While some students graduate fromcollege with $200,000 in debt andvery little in job prospects, thesestudents will graduate with no debtand probably a $40,000 job,” saidCentral Maine Community CollegePresident Scott Knapp.

The Future for ME program will createtwo full-time community collegestaffers to work with students. Thosestaffers will visit high schools to talk tojuniors and seniors about what agreat career field precision machiningis, Knapp said. The high school visitswill begin this fall, he said.

Candidates will need high skills inreading, writing and math. “Youcannot come into this program withconsumer math. This is an algebra-based program,” Knapp said.

Across Maine, precision machiningemploys more than 50,000 workersand is a key export business,Fitzsimmons said. “There are over900 job openings in our state. Theindustry is facing a daunting

Continued from pg. 1 challenge of an aging work force.”

Offering scholarships to 28 soundslike a small number when consideringthe 900 job openings, Fitzsimmonsacknowledged, adding that thecommunity college system should beenrolling 300 to 400 to catch up.

The new program “is the beginning,”he said. “We are very excited aboutattracting students directly from highschool into this program and into theindustry.”

Precision machining courses areoffered at community colleges acrossMaine, but the Auburn program isone of the largest. That means Futurefor ME will be mostly centered on theLewiston-Auburn area.

According to Lisa Martin, executivedirector of the ManufacturersAssociation of Maine, 40 Mainecompanies were recently asked howmany job openings they had. “Forty

Dana Connors, president of the Maine State Chamber of Commerce,speaks during a news conference at Central Maine Community College onTuesday. "Manufacturing is very alive in Maine," Connors said. He andother officials announced a new program, "Future for ME," to enroll morehigh school graduates in precision machining technology, an industry thatoffers good-paying jobs and needs skilled workers.

Designing YourImpossible FutureWhy you need one and how to do it

Here is what a Predictable Future(PF) career goal looks like:

• Graduate from university andbecome an engineer;

• Get a promotion within two years,or get promoted two levels within fiveyears;

• Get a new job within one year, orbecome comfortable in my new jobwithin six months.

This type of goal is based onextending the present situationlogically into the future if all goes well.It focuses on the short to medium termand involves overcoming obstacles,learning and strengtheningprofessional competencies. The goalis clear and measurable. Attaining aPF will give you satisfaction and buildconfidence.

An Impossible Future (IF) goal looksmore like:

• Meet the needs of seriouswoodworkers and gardeners as oneof the leading mail-order and retailsuppliers of woodworking tools,gardening tools and cabinethardware (Leonard Lee, Lee ValleyTools);

• Better Leaders. Better World

(Leadership coach Robert Hargrove);

• A computer on every desk and inevery home (Bill Gates).

With an IF, you go beyond yourpersonal achievements to how youmight make a larger contribution toyour community and even the world. Itseeks to answer these questions. Whyare you doing this? What positivedifference can you make to others?An IF is emotionally compelling andself-energizing. It inspires you tochallenge yourself and go beyondyour own expectations. It speaks toyour deepest wish to accomplishsomething of value and give your lifemeaning.

At this point, I can hear you say, "ButI'm not Bill Gates or a multinationalcompany. This is not something thatapplies to me". My answer is thatevery life has value and meaning andevery person of whatever skill leveland experience has the ability toimagine a more positive and powerfulfuture for themselves if they try.

An Emerging New Paradigm

Changing the way we set personaland professional goals is based on anew paradigm called SocialConstructionism. In their book,

Appreciative Coaching: a PositiveProcess for Change (p.23), Sara L.Orem, Jacqueline Binkert and Ann L.Clancy describe it this way:

"Instead of seeing an objective,predictable and controllable universe,scientists in the 21st century see avastly different world based on thefindings of quantum physics and thenew sciences of chaos theory, self-organizing systems and complexitytheory... Integral to socialconstructionism is the notion ofindividuals as active, independentand spontaneous beings who,consciously or not, form images of thefuture toward which they then grow."

Dr. David Cooperrider, FairmountMinerals Professor of SocialEntrepreneurship at Case WesternReserve University and founder of theAppreciative Inquiry approach, saysthat to a far greater extent than isnormally acknowledged, we humanscreate our own realities throughsymbolic and mental processes. Everygoal has conscious and unconsciouslimits built-in by the person designingit. Many of these limits come frompeople's fears and negative thinkingrather than anything that could reallyhold them back. So "dreaming big"

can be a way to push past those self-imposed limits.

Designing an Impossible Future is notwishful thinking. It is a new way to setgoals that reflects recent scientificfindings about human strength andresilience. It is founded on the ideathat your reality is yours to create. Youcan construct a small, safepredictable future or something moremeaningful and challenging. YourImpossible Future will most likely havea longer time frame and oneImpossible Future can lead to another.

8 Steps to Your ImpossibleFuture

1. Start by taking stock of yourcurrent reality, but with a twist.

Instead of focusing on what is wrongor missing, look for the best of what isnow. Identify your current strengths.Reflect on your career high points,positive experiences andaccomplishments. Find similarities,themes and lessons across yourpositive experiences. What isworking well for you? What do youwant to keep? Describe in detail yourpositive core.

2. Become an explorer into yourfuture.

Leaders I coach understand the importance ofidentifying a solid career goal to give focus anddirection to their careers. It takes a stretch though tocreate an Impossible Future. This article outlines theconcept and value of an Impossible Future and gives youeight steps for designing one. Once you learn how to doit for yourself, you can do it for your organization.

What is an Impossible Future?

Robert Hargrove, in his book Masterful Coaching(pp.xiv-xvii), defines Impossible Future as an"extraordinary result...or transformational goal". It movesleaders beyond goals based on a predictable future ora little game -- beyond incremental change andcontinuous improvement -- to reinventing yourself toachieve more than you thought possible. Designing yourImpossible Future is about personal transformation. Itrequires imagination and an act of faith.

With your positive attributes andstrengths in mind, imagine your idealfuture in broad strokes. Generateimages of possibilities. What wouldsomeone who respects and loves youwant for your future? How would youexpress your highest and best self? Ifthere were no obstacles, what couldyou accomplish that could make apositive difference for you and yourcommunity?

3. Paint a detailed picture

Now add plenty of detail to yourfuture. Define it clearly as if you arenow standing in your ImpossibleFuture. Use present tense language.What does it look like exactly?Where are you? Who is there? Whatare they saying about you? What areyou doing? How are you feeling?Make it real in your mind. Remember,you are forming the image of yourfuture "toward which you will thengrow".

4. Pay attention to the language youuse.

Scientists today recognize that howwe use language creates our socialreality. Optimistic, possibility-generating language drives people totake action in a positive direction farmore than negative, critical,

cautionary approaches. This does notmean you ignore obstacles. You justthink harder about how to overcomethem.

5. Declare your future to others.

It is important to give voice andintention to your future. You need totell people where you want to go andwhat difference you want to make. Ifpeople know where you are going,they just might help you.

6. Look for aspects of yourImpossible Future that you arealready living.

If you have a clear vision of whereyou want to go, your brain willunconsciously look for opportunities tomove toward that vision. Doors willopen that you did not see before. It islikely that you have already started onthe path toward your future. It will giveyou confidence if you are able tonotice what progress you are makingnow.

7. Develop a broad action plan butleave room for experimentation.

Turn your Impossible Future into aplan with stepping stones but look foropportunities to experiment. The focusis to expand your capabilities andlearn new things. This will meanlooking at your beliefs and
