Art Story: Every Picture Tells a StoryAn Introduction to Art for PreschoolersWednesday, November 6, 10:30 a.m.Thursday, November 14, 10:30 a.m.Saturday, November 23, 10:30 a.m.Free and Open to the PublicFor children ages 3 to 5 and their caregivers.

This program focuseson visual literacy and of-fers a preschool intro-duction to art throughpicture books and art-work in the galleries, and program includes asimple take-home craft.

Artist Sam Van Aken ponders the ineffable and the possibility oftransforming matter in a way that might be described as miracu-lous. He invites us to contemplate questions such as: how to repre-

sent (or, more accurately, present) that which is imagined or based onbelief? For MWPAI, Van Aken is thinking about weather patterns, and alter-ing them: what are atmospheric effects on the body and on the psyche? Ifthey are oppressive, can the atmosphere be altered to uplift the spirit?

Van Aken’s Sculpture Court Project, A Hole in the Sky, is comprised of twocomponents, Acadia and Smell ofa Storm, which attempt to createa new atmosphere or aura withinthe Museum of Art. For Acadia, hefills the Edward W. Root SculptureCourt with 10-foot weather bal-loons that are inflated with airfrom Acadia National Park, Mt.Desert Island, Maine. During thecourse of the exhibition, as theballoons deflate, the Museum willbe suffused with this sea air, likean inspiration, and the atmos-phere will be modified. For Smell of a Storm he creates conditions for an-other kind of atmospheric sensation, that of inducing the ecstatic aura thatprecedes seizures or migraines.

And perhaps most important to A Hole in the Sky, during the course of theexhibition, Van Aken would like to create above the Museum a punch hole(also called a fall streak hole), with a small plane in a kind of reverse-sky-writing process that is related to cloud seeding, the 20th century’s answerto weather modification. For Sam, it is a method to pierce the late-autumnor winter clouds that dominate Central New York so as to create an unob-structed connection between Earth and sky above, like a miraculous con-nection.

Sam Van Aken is Associate Professor at Syracuse University, where he ishead of the sculpture program. He is represented by Ronald Feldman FineArts, New York, and has exhibited his work internationally.

New, Funny andOdd Videos on View

The Museum of Art proudly announces the acquisition of Fragmentsfrom the Wheels of Ezekiel (nos. 13, 6, 10, and 8), by John Knecht, video artist and retired professor from Colgate University. These

Fragments are in digital video and presented on four flat-screen monitors,on view in the Cardamone Gallery through March 30, 2014. They are froma larger series featuring Knecht’s hand-drawn animations that are inspiredin part by the hallucinatory imagery described in the Book of Ezekiel.

Knecht’s imagination runs wild in these funny, odd, Fragments. He has astraightforward, even blunt, drawing style and uses bright colors that invitecomparisons to comics. He draws scenes based on his own life and memo-ries of growing up in Wisconsin, so there is an everyday-ness to his im-ages, but then . . . something weird happens to fly by or bounce around orchange into something else and you suspect you are no longer in Wiscon-sin, or even Kansas. Or perhaps you have simply pulled the proverbial cur-tains back far enough to see under the surface of appearances.
