HORSIN’ AROUND SEPTEMBER 2014

HorseSense 4.6Ah, the Memories! The Back to the Bricks/Flat Rock Tour/Roush Open House/Heroes Banquet/Woodward Dream Cruise/Mustang Memories and Blue Oval Blast Car Shows are now a memory. But what memories! What a 50th Birthday Party! It was truly a dream come true to be a part of all of the above crammed into one week. We had a record MCMM turnout at the Back to the Bricks on Saturday, Aug. 16, with several members also participating in the pre-Bricks cruise events. Amado Ardeo and I took in the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant tour and a second tour of the Prototype Assembly Plant after having won a raffle prize for that event. Later on Thursday, I met up with Stan Bentley and Quentin Levitte at the Roush Open House and checked out another car show outside, and the museum inside at Jack’s little store. Friday evening, several of us met up with Barb and Steve Hernden (friends from Charlevoix and a MCMM sponsor - Ad on page 3) at the MOCSEM-sponsored Ford Heroes Banquet, held at the Ford Event & Conference Center, in Dearborn. In attendance were well over 400 guests, plus over 60 team members from Ford, both past and present. MOCSEM President, Mike Rey, John Clor, and Ford’s Dave Paricek, Mustang Chief Engineer, MC’d the event. The team members from Ford then assembled at a long Heroes table where they signed autographs, talked, and had photos taken with the 400+ guests. It lasted just past midnight! What a Party, and an honor to meet and talk to so many current and past members of the

Ford Motor Company that has both small and large parts in the Mustang over the past 50 years. Saturday was Ford’s Mustang Alley in Ferndale. They announced over 900 Mustangs were in attendance. Time was taken to leave a little bit of rubber on Woodward in the afternoon (along with a few others). Sunday was a fabulous end to a great week with the MOCSEM Mustang Memories Car Show at the new venue and it was terrific. We had quite a group there and several of us helped out with same day registration. All cars entered received an award plaque and a stunning goodie bag. How do you beat over 1200 Mustangs and Ford Products in one place? The month ended with the Blue Oval Blast in Grand Ledge or the BridgeFest Car Show in Bridgeport. WHAT A MONTH! As the Great Lakes Stampede approaches, please make sure you keep your Sept. 20-21 open to help. We will meet at Nexteer around 2:00 pm on Saturday, for set up, than assemble on Sunday morning around 6:30 to get ready for the show.

Meeting Date Correction: Membership meeting is on Sept 15th at daVinci’s Resturant, Frankenmuth, at 7:00 PM. See page six for details. Show workers, please be prepared to review your areas one last time.

American Gasser hosted the August MCMM Membership MeetingOur August meeting on Monday, the18th, was held at American Gassers, 8175 Gratiot Road, Saginaw, at 7:00 PM. Our hosts provided pizza and beverages, gave us a tour of the shop, and showed us their latest custom drag car creations as well as their plans for the future. A shortened club business meeting preceded the tour. We thank our hosts for the meeting location, tour, and the chow. It was a learning experience where we found that American Gassers is more then just.... Gassers!

HORSIN’ AROUND SEPTEMBER 2014

The Mustang II, as the lead paragraph states, was also a winner back in 1974. When the “II” was launched, it was a true savior of the Mustang brand. In the early 1970’s, the Mustang had grown larger and heavier, and along with these changes, came slower sales. The Mustang II was the right car at the right time - just as in 1964-1/2 - as it was perfect for the need for a more fuel-efficient, yet sporty car. The Gas Crisis hit about two months after the “II” was introduced, and sales skyrocketed! First year sales in 1974 were 385,993, which were almost as good as the original, 1965 Mustang (418,812). The Mustang II launched with a four and a six cylinder engine, the first Mustang without a V-8. Ford fixed that in 1975 with a 302 V-8. Later, the Mustang II was the first Ford, in 1978, to call the V-8 a 5 Liter, as the company converted to metrics. Caesar’s 1978 King Cobra was offered only for the one year. A Cobra II version was offered in 1976 and 1978, So his car is on the rare side.

MCMM Members will have their own judging of our personal Mustangs and

Ford / Lincoln / Mercury /Shelby / other Ford Brand products. Our cars, like last

year, will be judged by members of the Mustang Owners Club of South East

Michigan. Five award trophies will be given out.

Classes will be the same as the non-member attendees. This allows us to be judged

by the same criteria as the non-member attendees and will give you an idea of what

your car rates by the judges. The judging form will be given to you to put on your car

with the widow card. It starts with 100 points, in six categories, as follows:

Body & Paint: 25 points; Trim, bumpers & Top: 15; Glass & Lights/Lens: 10; Wheels

& Tires: 10; Engine Compartment: 20; and Interior: 20 points. Deductions from the

100 points are made for condition, cleanliness and other factors on the judging sheet.

During the judging period, you’ll need your hood, windows, and top up (on

conv.). They can be put down, if desired, after the judging.

While this is optional for MCMM members at a cost of $10 per car., we hope you

will take part in support of the efforts of the club. The proceeds will go towards the

show income, with the expectation that we will be able to make a strong contribution

to the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, as in the past.
