FOR THE HONORARY DEGREE OF DOCTOR OF SCIENCESTERLING BROWN HENDRICKSThe lives of all of us in the State of North Carolina and in the Limited States ofAmerica have been enriched in every way because of your screntific ability andunremitting efforts.Born in Texas, Dr. Hendricks studied successively at the University of Arkansas,Kansas State Agricultural College, and the California Institute of Technology. Afterwork at the Geophysical Laboratory of the Carnegie Institution of Washington andthe Rockefeller Institute of Medical Research, he entered the United States De-partment of Agriculture in 1928. There he still serves as chief chemist in thePioneering Research Laboratory for the Mineral Nutrition of Plants.The list of his prizes, fellowships, and awards is a litany to a life devoted to theservice of science and of mankind. Chemist, mineralogist, geologist, agronomist,plant physiologist, physicist—his breadth of interest and versatility of accomplish-ment make him a type almost unknown since the advent and growth of modernseience.Dr. Hendricks, your contributions to your country and the welfare of mankindbring honor to all of us.
