MissionThe mission of the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music is to provide the finest musical education to the aspiring professional performer as well as to children and adults who desire cultural enrichment or musical self-fulfillment.

HistoryFounded in 1899, the Conservatory is the oldest nonprofit independent music school in Wisconsin, housing an extensive music library and offering private lessons, class instruction, and performance opportunities. For over a century, the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music has seen and taught the likes of:

PHilosoPHyThe Wisconsin Conservatory of Music provides musical experiences to students from age four months through senior citizen, both amateur and professional. Our work to develop creative, artistic individuals enhances life in southeastern Wisconsin by providing exceptional performances and nurturing generations of innovative, inspired and visionary citizens.

The Conservatory strives to provide an environment in which individual students can thrive and grow. The Conservatory is committed to tailoring each student’s instruction to his/her individual needs, abilities, interests and learning styles. Helen Bader recital HallThe Conservatory presents hundreds of intimate concerts in the Helen Bader Recital Hall, also popular as a wedding and reception venue. Hailed as one of the finest small performance spaces in Milwaukee, this “jewel box” ballroom features superior acoustics ideally suited for student recitals as well as chamber music, small ensembles, and faculty concerts.

Expert, award-winning faculty give instruction through lessons, classes, ensembles and concerts encouraging students to play at a very high level and guiding them to become well-rounded musicians.

LESSONSLessons at the Conservatory provide students with the opportunity to hone their skills one-on-one with a highly skilled teaching artist. Private lessons allow students to work on their individual strengths and refine their technique, further improving their skill as a musician.

CLASSESClasses at the Conservatory encourage learning through participation in a group setting. Meeting new people and participating in student collaboration help students grow as musicians.

ENSEMBLESEnsembles at the Conservatory allow students the chance to take what they have learned and perform with other students. Collaborating, creating and performing music with others allows students to see their skill in action while learning even more, helping to round out their experience at the Conservatory.

MUSIC THERAPYMusic therapy uses music, in all its forms - creating, singing, moving, and listening - within a therapeutic relationship to achieve many non-musical goals and to address the physical, emotional, cognitive and social needs of individuals.

CONCERTSThe Conservatory provides students the opportunity to perform and compete in concerts that will drive them to excel and improve upon their growing skills as a musician. Concerts are held at various venues across the state as well as the beautiful and historic Helen Bader Recital Hall located inside the McIntosh|Goodrich Mansion.

ABOUT EARLY CHILDHOOD MUSIC EXPLORATIONS The Conservatory’s Music Explorations curriculum was developed by our team of early childhood specialists to address the specific needs of each stage of development. Our program develops fine motor, gross motor, social, listening, and sequencing skills all while giving kids a solid foundation for a lifetime of music making. Students explore singing, playing rhythm instruments, and moving to the music.

MUSIC EXPLORATIONS CLASSESFor 12 weeks children will explore instruments and singing with their peers and families while:

ABOUT SUZUKIThe Suzuki Method is rooted in the philosophy that music education can be as natural as an infant learning their native tongue. The Conservatory Suzuki program for violin, viola and guitar combines specialized, individual lessons and group instruction with Suzuki-trained professionals where students learn from and with their peers.

Suzuki study can begin as early as age 4 (3-year olds accepted at instructor’s discretion). Students progress through the curriculum sequentially at their own rate, regardless of their grade level at entry.

The collaboration of parents is essential to the Suzuki philosophy and the success of the students. Our program includes ongoing parent education and active participation of parents who serve as the home teacher throughout the week.

SUZUKI LESSONSPrivate lessons are an essential component of the Suzuki program, together with participation in group lessons. Lessons are available in packages of 30-, 45-, or 60-minute durations. Active parental participation with the child’s lessons, classes and daily practice is an important part of the Suzuki philosophy.

ABOUT JAZZ INSTITUTEThe Conservatory Jazz program is one of the oldest and most successful programs in the country. Beginners, advanced players and hobbyists alike sound like professionals under the expert mentoring of our world-class teaching artists. Students will study jazz improvisation and theory, play with combos and big bands, and get individualized attention as they play the music of the jazz greats. Renowned jazz alumni of the Conservatory include: Lynne Arriale, Gerald Cannon, Rich Germanson, David Hazeltine, Brian Lynch, and Dan Nimmer.

JAZZ LESSONSWork individually with expert faculty to refine your instrumental technique, deepen your improvisation skills and become a stronger player.

JAZZ CLASSES & ENSEMBLES The Jazz Institute offers straight-ahead and Latin jazz combos at all experience levels for middle school, high school and adult musicians. Placement interviews ensure that ensembles consist of players with similar abilities. Classes are open to everyone.

Middle and High School Jazz ProgramThe Conservatory offers a new class and combo package conveniently scheduled to provide a thorough educational experience for students. Jazz Foundations for middle-school students and Materials of Jazz for high-school students are comprehensive classes that cover Jazz history, theory, style and performance practice, ear training, and improvisation techniques. PHILOMUSICAPhilomusica String Quartet is the quartet-in-residence at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music. True to their name, philo (love of ) + musica (music), violinists Jeanyi Kim and Alexander Mandl, violist Nathan Hackett and cellist Adrien Zitoun formed in 2008 in order to create an outlet for sharing and expressing their love of chamber music. Each member brings a wealth of experience as versatile performer and educator to the group. Entering full force into their seventh season, the energetic and critically acclaimed Philomusica Quartet continues to delight their growing audience with jewels of the string quartet repertoire.

PROMETHEUS TRIOThe Conservatory’s resident piano trio returns for a 15th remarkable season to continue their tradition of presenting masterworks sure to enthrall classical music lovers. Critically acclaimed year after year, Prometheus Trio brings undeniable energy and superb artistry to each and every performance. All concerts are held in the Helen Bader Recital Hall in the McIntosh|Goodrich Mansion at 1584 North Prospect Avenue.

WE SIXFrom hard bop to world beats, original compositions to soulful standards, the We Six jazz sextet explores the full range of jazz in their straight-ahead style. A consistent favorite at festivals and clubs, this group currently is in its 13th season of residency at the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music where the members teach and perform regularly in concert.

ABOUT THE MCINTOSH|GOODRICH SOCIETYNamed for the first families to reside in our Prospect Avenue home, the McIntosh|Goodrich Society is a new association for the Conservatory’s principal benefactors. Members of the Society sustain the Conservatory with fundamental operating support that ensures the highest quality music education for our community. As a group, the Society annually provides a reliable foundation on which to build successful and growing educational programs, scholarships, community programs, partnerships, and so much more.

In 2014, the Conservatory observed 80 years of operation in this location, an event we celebrated by naming our new society after those who literally built the Conservatory’s foundation. Charles Lyon McIntosh (1850-1910) completed construction on the mansion in October 1904 and it served as a residence for his family until 1921. William Osborne Goodrich (1863-1956), a devoted music patron, purchased the building that year and lived in the home until 1934 when he leased, and later sold, it to the Wisconsin Conservatory of Music.

The Conservatory has a magnificent history of providing exceptional musical experiences to the community since 1899. This legacy includes famous performers, noted pedagogues…and a mansion whose stately elegance and grandeur have become a metaphor for the musical excellence within its storied walls. Today’s Conservatory touches the lives of hundreds of people from the heart of Milwaukee to Racine, New Berlin and Port Washington.Becoming a special member of the McIntosh|Goodrich Society not only supports the Conservatory’s programs, but also gives you membership in a philanthropic social community. festival of trees & MusicNovember 13-23, 2014Featuring dozens of live performances, the Festival of Trees & Music transforms the Conservatory’s historic McIntosh|Goodrich Mansion into a wonderland replete with thousands of lights, sparkling trees and stunning décor for children of all ages.

Thousands will visit over the course of the festival. Enjoy trees decorated by local artists and performances showcasing many Conservatory and local musicians, as well as community partners. Last year’s 11-day festival featured performances by students from UWM Peck School, Boys and Girls Clubs of Greater Milwaukee, Milwaukee Children’s Choir and many more.

Custom-decorated Christmas trees will be auctioned during the festival in support of the Conservatory’s community music education programs. They will be available just in time for Thanksgiving and the holiday season.

Saturday, April 18, 2015SWING! is the Conservatory’s signature annual gala. This year the gala will take place on Saturday, April 18, 2015 at the Hilton Milwaukee City Center. The proceeds support the Conservatory and its programs in Milwaukee schools and community settings throughout the metro area and provide financial aid and scholarships for talented Conservatory students.

Join us for an “Unforgettable” evening of “Puttin’ on the Ritz” with dinner, dancing and an exciting silent auction. The Conservatory Big Band will perform the biggest hits of the era in the historic Crystal Ballroom of the Hilton Milwaukee City Center with crooner sensation Michael Andrew headlining the evening.
