Music Video Analysis

An analysis of my three favourite music videos.

David Guetta ft Akon – Sexy Chick

• I feel that the lyrics relate to the images of the song. As they are singing about sexy chicks and there are loads of girls walking around in bikinis.

• Andrew Goodwin’s theory on lyrics says that the lyrics of a song help to establish a mood sense or subject matter. You can see this within in the video as the lyrics help the viewer to establish that the artist is singing about a girl and also that it is a feel good song with an upbeat tempo.


• Here are some examples of how the visuals fit in with the lyrics. The objective views of the girls bodies and them in bikini’s shows their fitness.


• In this video you can also see the strong difference within the representation of both the female and male dancers.

• In this video you can see that the women play no real role and are just there to look at so from this you can see that they are trying to aim the song and video at a young male audience. However there are also men in swimming stuff as well and although there are not as many as there are women it still may relate to a female audience as well.


• Here are some examples of representation within the video.


• The editing of this track is very fast paced and when looking at Andrew Goodwin’s theory you can see how it works as because this video is fast paced it ensures that the viewer will have to watch it more than once in order to grasp all of the images that it is trying to show.

• Also the fact that this video is fast paced it makes more sense that the video is fast paced to otherwise it wouldn’t fit with the song and there for the images wouldn’t fit with the track.

Kanye West - Heartless

• I like this music video as I feel that it is not something in which you see everyday as there are not a lot of half dressed women dancing around to the track while he is stood in the background singing.

• I also like this video as it is like watching an animation than a music video and this makes it more appealing to watch.

Kanye West - HeartlessHere are a couple of screen grabs just to show you some of the effects that have been used when creating this video in order to make it look like an animation.


• The narrative and performance of this video is really good as you can see that he is trying to tell a story as you watch the video as it is as if you are watching a cartoon. Having a music video like this allows the viewer to have more access to the performer than a live performance would.


• This video has a narrative as he is singing about a girl that has broke his heart and how she was heartless and when watching the video there are girls all around him but he just walks past them without a second look. This also relates to the lyrics of the song and so therefore also makes it easier for the viewer to understand.


These are just some of the girls in which he walks past as he only wants one girl and none of these other ones seem to compare or matter to him.

The Ian Carey Project – Get Shakey

• This video relates to the lyrics of the songs as is says “Baby get shaky after school” and in the video it is a group of kids that all start off in a lesson and then when it ends they are all outside in there uniforms dancing.


• This song fits into the dance genre when trying to categorise it. As this is the genre of the song it is upbeat and the editing is also quick paced.

• In this video is seems like there is a boys vs. girls dance battle going on as well as them all dancing to the music together and this also fits to the lyrics of the song.


Here we see both a boy and a girl dancing and it seems like they are having a dance off.
