Original Broadway production by Heidi Landesman, Rocco Landesman, Rick Steiner, M. Anthony Fisher, Frederic H. Mayerson, Jujamcyn TheatresOriginally produced by the Old Globe Theatre, San Diego, CA

Into the Woods was to have been presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials were also supplied by MTI. www.MTIShows.com

Once upon a time…. in York, Pennsylvania… a group of students and members of the York College campus community were preparing a production of Stephen Sondheim’s “Into the Woods.” Half-way into the project as the pieces were excitedly coming together, a metaphorical “Giant” called COVID-19 stomped all over the country. Just as the characters in Sondheim’s musical fled from the village to avoid being trampled, the campus community also dispersed, but the adventure into the woods continued...

What you see here is a tribute to the production that was interrupted – a culmi-nation of efforts from many individuals that were distanced and then re-directed through technology and determination. The graphic designs originally intended for advertising were adapted into this digital “program” which is intended to accompany the short video created by the cast, crew, and production team while distanced. The “program” includes everyone who planned to be involved in the YCP production, originally intended for April 30-May 2, 2020 in Waldner Performing Arts Center. The music in the video tribute is an excerpt from the Second Act Finale of “Into the Woods” that we compiled remotely, one at a time, with each person contributing something to the effort in their own special way.

“Sometimes people leave you Halfway through the woods.

Do not let it grieve you.No one leaves for good.

You are not alone. No one is alone.”Baker’s Wife, Act II Finale

About The Show“Into the Woods” won the 1988 Tony award for Best Score by Stephen Sondheim and Best Book by James Lapine. This musical masterpiece profoundly explores morality through a mingling of fairytales with stories to be told and lessons to be learned. With a sophisticated artistry blending tenderness and wit, Sondheim leads us on a journey to the darker side of fairytales where a childless baker and his wife, cursed by a wicked witch, discover magic beans that begin an adventure with a multitude of characters. Jack learns about the desire for material goods and the pain of lost friendship, Cinderella discovers the side-effects of wishing for

“happily ever after”, and Little Red strays from the path in order to gain persp- ective on temptation. Along the way, the audience learns that “witches can be right”, “giants can be good”, and “if the end is right, it justifies the beans.”

“Into the Woods” demonstrates that wishes often come with risks and tough choices. At the end of the journey, however, the power of community and shared sacrifice can ultimately bring forgiveness and brighter wishes for the future.

“Isn’t it nice to know a lot? (And a little bit...not.)” -Little Red Ridinghood, Act I, Scene 2

About The VideoThe power of community was truly demonstrated in our COVID-19 adventure into social distance. After it was announced that campus would remain closed for the full semester, and our full, live production could not be realized, we redirected our creative energies down a different path. We began with a piano track of Sondheim’s Act II Finale, then added a conducting track, then added 25 voices- from 25 different locations. Then we added inspiration from our production and graphic design teams with concepts from our show - and then finally added many, many hours of magic from the mixing and editing desk.

The end result is a six-minute video filled with love and dedication from a commu-nity of students, faculty, staff, and friends. It’s the journey that counts. (Some-times even more than the destination.)

“Into the woods, it’s time to go,It may be all in vain, you know.

Into the woods - but even so,You have to take the journey.
