DIRECTOR ’S NOTES

What can one say when you are talking about a man who is considered the very best lyric writer and most adventurous composer in the musical theatre. Stephen Sondheim has given us so many wonderful theatrical adventures and tonights production is a celebration of his earlier works. Written over 30yrs ago, Side by Side by Sondheim, gives you a look at many of the big musicals he was instrumen-tal in creating. West Side Story, Gypsy, A Little Night Music, A Funny Thing Hap-pened on the Way to the Forum, Pacific Overtures, Follies and Company.

You may be sitting there thinking, I really do not know a lot of Sondheim’s music. So I invite you to read through the list of songs we will be performing tonight and you may be surprised just how much of his music you really do know. Sondheim, now 80yrs old, continued to write more lyrics and music. Shows like Sunday in the Park with George, Sweeney Todd, and Into the Woods just to name a few.

Sondheim’s music and lyrics are very challenging for a performer. Sondheim often weaves two melodies together and they fit perfectly. Then you have the words, and Sondheim loves to use a lot of words. Thank you to the cast of tonights show for taking on this challenge. Sit back and enjoy the music and lyrics Stephen Sondheim.

Holly PietenpolHolly is thrilled to be part of another production here at Memories! Many of her favorite shows are Stephen Sondheim works

and her love for Stephen is unending. She was last seen in The Christmas Schooner as Martha/Storyteller and before that performed a dream role, Maureen in UW Manitowoc’s production of RENT. Holly is a veteran of the stage having trained in London, Scotland and Ireland at the Gaiety School of Acting. Favorite roles include: Miss Mazeppa, Gypsy, Baker’s Wife, Into the Woods, and Shelby Spitfire Grill. She wants to thank her husband Anton for sacrificing his time with her for her love of theatre!

Lynn KlemmLynn is no stranger to the stage at Memories. She has been performing here for some 14+ years. Over the past 7 years as one of

the owner of Memories, she is thrilled to see the growth that has taken place in the dinner theater aspect of this facility that she loves so much.

Lynn’s favorite Memories’ roles include; Louise in Always… Patsy Cline, Sister Amnesia in Nunsense, Doris in Same Time Next Year, Louise in Wally’s Café and her performance in the musical review

Some Enchanted Evening. Side by Side by Sondheim has now been placed in a new category of the most challenging of all the musical productions that Lynn has been part of, but who doesn’t love a challenge. Lynn wishes to thank Joe for the opportunity of working with this very talented cast. Lynn would like to thank her husband, Bob, of 31 years, for his continued love and support of her crazy and demanding involvement in theatre. She would also like to thank the audiences for their support. It is wonderful to look out at the tables and see the faces of so many friends.

Pat ForknerPat’s performance roles are far too numerous to mention. She has appeared here at Memories in Mixed Emotions, Cemetery

Club, The Queen of Bingo, A Bench in the Sun and March of 2009’s production of The Spitfire Grill. Pat is always thrilled to be working at Memories, but particularly delighted to be working with Joe Feustel again. She also has the added good fortune to work with such a talented cast. When I grow up, I want to sing just like them.\

Bill KohlerBill has been doing theater so long that he can’t remember all the shows he has done. Most recently he has played Gustav in The Christmas

Schooner and Smudge in Forever Plaid. He is thrilled to be a part of this talented cast and working with Joe again. He owes all to his wonderful family, his lovely wife Susie, and his wonderfully understanding mom. I LOVE YOU BOTH! They say that behind every good man is a great woman. I am blessed with two great women.

All glory and Praise be to Jesus Christ.

T. C. Roberts Tom has always considered himself more of a writer than a performer, but when he was offered the opportunity to perform Stephen

Sondheim’s music he couldn’t say no, especially working with this fun cast. Tom is most well-known for playing Josh Baskin in Big: the musical, Sid Sorokin in The Pajama Game, and, more

recently, Roger Davis in RENT. He has only been in one Sondheim show in the past, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum (Hero), and has been chomping at the bit to perform more of his masterful work. You can also find him working amongst the tables at the Courthouse Pub in Manitowoc. Thanks to family, friends, and cast for making this show as fun as the music. Enjoy!

performances as an actor, music director, and orchestral musician.
