MADRID - Senior executives of theinternational labels' body IFPIdemanded immediate action tocrack down on CD piracy at apress conference in Madrid onApril 24, which marked the endof a two-day visit to Spaindesigned to step up what SonyMusic Europe president PaulBurger called "the war on thiscancerous criminal disease."

In IFPI's European executive com-mittee's first formal visit to the coun-try, IFPI chairman/CEO Jay Bermanmet under-secretary of state for justiceJose Maria Michavila and other Span-ish government officials.

The IFPI visit was timed to coincidewith Spain's six-month presidency ofthe EU.

"There are three reasons why wechose Madrid for this quarterly meet-ing," explained Burger. "First, there is

clearly an absolute explosion ofpiracy in Spain. In the 18months I have held my currentposition, piracy in Spain hasdoubled from 15% to 30%,reaching 50% in the case of cur-rent hit records. Secorid, toshow our solidarity in this fight.And third, our mission is to call

on the [Spanish] government to contin-ue to fight for new legisation [...] to stoporganised crime from stealing thelifeblood from our industry."

Viva has purchased The Box, for anundisclosed amount (estimated by aDutch newspaper to be around euros 18million) from media entrepreneur andpublisher Maarten van den Biggelaarand US company Liberty Media, eachof whom owned 50%.

The acquisition follows Viva's re-cent moves into Hungary, Poland,Switzerland and Austria.

"Rap and techno, which are not genuine musicalexpressions, will of course be excluded from any pub-lic subsidies."

It is an almost anodyne sentence, and it snms up ina nutshell what France's National Front is about. Thiswas taken from the party's manifesto on the official website of the extremist right-wing racist party, whose can-didate Jean-Marie Le Pen caused an earthquake inFrench and European politics by reaching the finalstage of the presidential elections.

It is not the right place here to discuss the reasonswhy this has happened (and, as a Frenchman, it doesnot make me feel too proud), but it might not be such abad thing if it opens the eyes of a few people in terms ofwaking up to what it means to be a part of a democra-tic system.

The issue here is not about subsidies, of course-thereal question is that, for the National Front, rap or tech -no represent the lowest end of culture and a degrada-tion of France's purity.

Rap is a musical genre and a social expression whichhas developed in France out of disfranchised areaswhere-surprise, surprise-immigrants from Africahave settled. It is that multi -racial, multi -culturalvision of France that Le Pen's supporters so despise.Meanwhile, techno, in the minds of the members of theNational Front, is associated with drugs and gay people,representing today's civilisation's decadence.

In recent history, non -democratic regimes haveattacked two areas that embody democracy-freespeech on the one hand and arts and culture on theother.

As westerners used to living in peaceful democracies,we tend to take too many things for granted. Any gov-ernment or party which attacks culture, especially someof its most popular expressions, is byessence suspect-and dangerous.

In that regard, the NationalFront is probably the most odiousand infectious disease that democra-cy can be affected with. And it is theduty of all democrats to stand andsay, as the Spanish Republicans didin the 1930s, "No pasaran". Hopingthat this time, they will, indeed, bestopped before reaching power.

NRJ blames cuts on frequency sharingby Kai R. Lofthus

OSLO - CHR network NRJ Nor-way is blaming the country's fre-quency -sharing arrange-ments for the laying off ofa combined total of 11staffers at its stations inStavanger and Trond-heim.

The April 23 announce-ment of the layoffs followsa revision of Norway'smedia legislation on Jan-uary 1, whereby allbroadcasters sharing a frequencywere given the legal right to haveat least some daytime airtime eachday between 06.00 and 18.00.

At both its Stavanger andTrondheim outlets, NRJ is forced toshare the frequency with otherbroadcasters, and will now have to

do so at peak times."[Frequency sharing] reduces

our ability to compete, and dimin-ishes the opportunity to increase

our ratings which inturn has an effect onour future turnover,"says NRJ Norwaymanaging directorRichard Mazeret. "It'sdisappointing that thishas lead to staff redun-dancies during thisrecession."

Frequency -sharinghas been imposed in Norwaybecause of a shortage of FM fre-quencies. "In no other countrywhere NRJ is based have we expe-rienced such a low level of under-standing among local authoritiesregarding commercial radio," notesMazeret.

Mazeret argues that frequencysharing is "confusing" NRJ's listen-ers, and adds that although herespects market diversity and wel-comes competition, he believes that24 -hour, single -operators "wouldultimately increase competitionand programming quality."

Under the slogan "Don't 'MuchNRJ" the network has been appeal-ing directly over the air for the localradio authority not to hand itsafternoon daypart over to compet-ing broadcasters.

Despite the layoffs, Mazeretsays NRJ will continue to expandwithin Norway. "NRJ has alwaysoperated with a long-term andexpansive view in Norway," hesays. "It's incredible that theauthorities want to make thingsmore difficult by interfering withour stations like this."

AIM addresses copy protection concernsby Juliana Koranteng

LONDON - UK indie labels bodyAIM is examining the use of CD -encrypted technology with a view tomaking recommendations about itsuse to its 650 members.

AIM has formed a steering groupto look into the issue. Its first meet-ing is scheduled to take place in thefirst week of May.

"We felt it was time to try andtake a view on this," says GavinRobinson (pictured), managingdirector of AIM's commercial arm,Musicihdie. "That's because it's notso much a technology problem, but acultural one. It's the fact that peopleare going to use the technology insuch a way that we need to investi-gate."

So far, the majors have taken the

lead in the use of copy -protectionsystems, which prevent consumersfrom making digital copiesof their purchased CDs.The leading systemsbeing used by the majorsare Sony Electronicskey2audio and Cactus DataShield by Israel -based Mid -bar.

Musicindie's Robinson says thatAIM-whose member labelsaccounted for 23% of the UK albumsmarket and 30% of the singles mar-ket in 2000-cannot stay out of thedebate.

The AIM steering group willreview all the encryption systemsavailable and invite their creators todemonstrate their respective mer-its. The group will also negotiate thebest rates to pay for the copy -protec-

tion technology.Additionally, it will invite retail-

ers, who have beenreporting con-

sumers' complaintsabout the new systems,

to express their views. TheEuropean division of entertain-

ment retail body GERA recentlycalled on record companies to bemore open about their use of copy -protection technology.

"We want to address all sides ofthe argument," says Robinson. "Wehelp a very wide community, so wecan only say what we believe to bereasonable or a better way of doingthings."

Robinson also believes theremight be scope to link up on thematter with IMPALA, the Europeantrade body for independent labels.

Conference questions radio's roleby Jon Heasman

LONDON - Radio's status asthe pre-eminent medium forbreaking new music wasquestioned by new researchand some high -profile speak-ers at the UK Radio Acade-my's Music Radio conferencein London on April 18.

Research on the record -buying habits of British 15-44year -olds commissioned forthe conference by EdisonMedia Research revealed that,among the 501 people ques-tioned, only 23% cited radio asthe factor that most influ-enced their last CD purchase,compared to 35% for TV(including TV advertising),which emerged in the poll asthe top media for creatingawareness of new music.

That statistic was backedup by the views of RCARecords A&R consultantSimon Cowell, who hasbecome better known recentlyfor his role as a judge in thehighly -successful UK TVseries Pop Idol. Interviewed by

Sony Music UK VP communi-cations Gary Farrow, Cowell-who has A&R'd acts such asWestlife, Robson & Jeromeand Power Rangers-said that"TV is more important for mykind of records, because theyrely on emotion-and it'smuch more difficult to createemotion on the radio."

Cowell defended the PopIdol concept, saying that "any-thing that gets four millionpeople into the [record] shopshas got to be good for the[music] business." He alsoslammed artists such asGeorge Michael and EltonJohn, who have criticised PopIdol, for "sneering at anyonewho has been given the oppor-tunity to succeed."

Another speaker whobelieved that radio's role inbreaking new music has beenexaggerated was Piers Mor-gan, the editor of UK tabloidThe Daily Mirror, who deliv-ered one of the conference'sSoapbox sessions. "Newspa-pers are a damn sight moreimportant than radio sta-

tions," he claimed, saying hewas surprised that record com-panies didn't attach moreimportance to getting coveragefor their artists in the showbizcolumns of papers such as hisown and The Sun. Morgan alsolamented the lack of "fun" and"danger" in the modern-daymusic industry, observing that"a once -rampaging business"had now been "neutered."

Among the awards handedout at the conference, long -serving 95.8 Capital FM/Lon-don breakfast show presenterChris Tarrant was presentedwith the Radio Academy/PRSAward for Outstanding Con-tribution to Music Radio.Receiving his award, Tarrantmade one of the day's mostpassionate speeches, pleadingfor stations like Capital totake a few more risks withmusic and adopt a broadermusic focus. Criticising theuse of focus groups and musicresearch, he asked: "Can westop playing eight seconds ofsongs down the phone to littleold ladies?"

MADRID - Some 10months after planswere first announced,a multinational Latinmusic label called Sun-nyluna Records hasbeen launched bySpanish music con-glomerate GVM,Miami producerEmilio Estefan (pic-tured) and Sony MusicEurope.

Madrid -based Sun-nyluna, which aims tolaunch and promoteLatin artists, isfinanced 60% by GVM, withEstefan's Crescent Moon labeland Sony Music Internationalsupply the remaining 40% ofequity.

Initial target markets areSpain, Latin America and the ,US, but Sony Music Europe

president Paul Burger saysthat "Sony's ambition isto work with Sunnylu-na artists and sell themworldwide. We are veryproud to be working inSpain with CrescentMoon and with GVM,Spain's most presti-gious independentlabel. Sunnyluna is avery important cadre ofcommitted artistic tal-ent."

Burger says thatSony has no specialstrategy for Latinartists in Europe, andadmit there is no magic

formula. "Each artist is differ-ent, but singing in Englishmakes a difference, as you cansee with our number one Euro-pean airplay and sales artist,Shakira," he says.

The label has alreadysigned four artists: Puerto

Rican pop singer Shalim,whose self -titled debut wasreleased in February; Peru-vian singer/songwriter GianMarco; female trio MSM, thelatest incarnation of theMiami Sound Machine; andTexan rock band Vallejo.

Domingo Garcia has beennamed as manager of thelabel, which will be run byrepresentatives of the threeowner companies.

GVM CEO Luis Merinosays the committee will consistof "three of the five of us here,"referring to himself, GVM gen-eral manager Ignacio Iglesias,Estefan, Burger, and CrescentMoon managing directorMauricio Abaroa.

Sony will handle distribu-tion, manufacturing and mar-keting everywhere but Spain;where those functions will beperformed by GVM parentcompany Grupo Prisa.

ON THE BEATOCR'S Kiss FM DEBUTS IN SPAINMADRID - Onda Cero Radio (OCR) launched its newAC/Gold network Kiss FM in Spain on April 13. Thenetwork includes more than 50 stations, including oneacross the border in Andorra. Kiss FM replaces OndaCero Masica, which ceases to exist as a network. KissFM director Marc Vicens says: "We are aiming at over25s with classic easy pop hits of the past two or threeyears with some oldies thrown in." First-day listeningincluded tracks by The Police, Fleetwood Mac, Alejan-dro Sanz and Rosana. OCR is wholly owned by tele-coms group Telefonica.

SONY GERMANY'S DOMESTIC DIVISION TAKES SHAPEBERLIN - Managing director of Sony Music Enter-tainment Germany, Boris Lithe, has announced thatthe company's new Domestic Division (M&M, April13) will comprise four sub -divisions: Columbia, Epic,MOR artists and affiliated labels, which will all sharea single promotion department. Ralf Kotowski hasbeen promoted to general manager of Columbia,Domestic Division, while Volker Neurnfiller joins thecompany as general manager of Epic, Domestic Divi-sion. Tanja Merz and Bettina Exner will jointly headup the MOR division. Tessy Schulz will be responsiblefor co-ordinating the division's affiliated labels includ-ing X -Cell, Four Music, Pirate Records and KA2.

GRANDE NEW AFYVE PRESIDENTMADRID - Carlos Grande has been elected presidentof Spanish labels' body AFYVE, the Spanish affiliateof IFPI, replacing EMI Recorded Music presidentRoberto "Chacho" Ruiz. Grande has been director ofAFYVE for 27 years, and will continue in that role.His appointment breaks a nearly 50 -year long tradi-tion whereby AFYVE presidents have been recordlabel presidents elected on a rotation basis. "It wasdecided that in terms of the external representation ofSpain's record industry, it was better to have AFYVEin the hands of a professional independent," explains -Grande, who chairs an eight -strong executive commit-tee. His appointment is for a maximum of three years.

Rix FM gains on public rivalby Johan Lindstrom

STOCKHOLM - Swedishcommercial Hot AC networkRix FM has achieved itsbest ever audience figures,partly due to the fact thatthe MTG Radio -owned sta-tion has been broadcastingon two frequencies in Stock-holm since earlier this year.

According to the latestofficial audience surveyfrom RUAB, Rix FM nowhas a daily reach of10.3%-or 781,000 listen-ers-distancing itself fromits commercial competitorsNRJ and Mix Megapol,which are down respective-ly to a 7.4% and 6.9% reach.

Rix Morronzoo, Rix FM'sweekday morning show, hasgained 46,000 listeners,while its afternoon program-ming has surpassed that ofpublic broadcaster SR's

CHR outlet P3 for the firsttime ever.

While still trailing P3overall, the latest surveyshows that, for the firsttime ever, Rix FM is morepopular than among the 15-24 age group than its publicrival.

Local stations promotes musical diversityby Joanna Shore

PARIS - Independent localand regional commercial sta-tions are "important to thediversity of the French radioscene in 2002," according toa new survey carried out byindependent local radio bodySIRTI and airplay monitor-ing service Yacast.

The report finds that Frenchradio is in a healthy state as faras the variety of music beingplayed is concerned.

"The different formatslead to diversity in program-ming," says SIRTI presidentPhilippe Gault. "The radio

scene is diverse and respondsto the public's expectations."

The survey was based onthe number of differenttracks aired on 25 stationsthroughout the countryfrom 05.00 to midnight dur-ing the second half of 2001.

Of some 14,000 differenttitles broadcast during theperiod in question, 87%were played by indepen-dent local stations radiostations. Over 60% of the14,000 titles were playedexclusively by the localradio sector.

The survey also showedthat local broadcasers aver-

aged 82% new music,whereas national networkradio played only 59% con-temporary tracks.

Among the eight nationalcommercial networks sur-veyed-including FunRadio, Skyrock and RFM-national CHR network NRJcame out as the station withhighest level of rotations.

Seventeen out of thenation's 120 local or region-al stations surveyed aremembers of SIRTI. Theyinclude Paris -based Oui FM(rock) Radio Voltage (CHR)and Hit West (CHR) inwestern France.

SMG PROFITS TAKE A TUMBLE

LONDON - UK media company SMG, which ownsrock station Virgin Radio and holds a 29% stake inScottish Radio Holdings, has blamed the recent adver-tising downturn for a fall in its profits. According topreliminary results for 2001, pre-tax profits beforeone-off costs and losses sustained in online venturesamounted to £36 million (euros 58.5m), compared to£59 million in 2000. EBITDA was down to £65.7 mil-lion from £78.8 m in 2000. "Although the timing of anupturn in advertising remains unclear, we have confi-dence in our strategy and we are monitoring theprospects for regulatory relaxation closely," says SMGchief executive Andrew Flanagan.

Europe gets in on the DVD actionAs DVD-V music videos soar in popularity, a sea changeis taking place. Most releases initially originated in the USand were rejigged for international markets. But asJuliana Koranteng discovers, the past year has seen sev-eral European labels and content providers developtheir own music DVD-V programmes with internationaland local content.

n terms of sales, the audio CD isgoing through a tough time.Internet -based music is still seekinga hit in the form of a revenue model.And the traditional music video, on

bulky VHS tape, appears to havenever reached a Platinum sales status.

The video version of the DigitalVersatile Disk (DVD-V) looks set toinject new life into video music enter-tainment, especially as most new CDreleases are accompanied by a DVD-Vversion. According to Frank Brunger,VP of international marketing andsales for Warner Vision International(WVI), Warner Music International'saudio-visual unit, the DVD-V hasachieved in five years what the CDplayer did in eight and the VCR in 13.

"The DVD-V player is the fastestgrowing consumer electronic hard-ware of all time," he notes. Andalthough growth has been spurred bythe huge demand for DVD-V movies,the music -video sector is catching on(see chart).

Since last October, UMI has had adedicated DVD-V department thathandles all aspects-from conceptthrough manufacturing to marketingand distribution-for both back andfrontline catalogues.

However, the labelwas confident Westlife's popularity would guarantee a huge uptake.Produced in-house by the label, the DVD is a recording of the band'sconcert at The Point in Dublin on March 31, 2001. It was releasedin November 2001, in time for the Christmas rush. As a fun ele-ment, the different sections of the content are linked by 3 -dimen-sional graphics. In addition to the concert performance, the produc-tion contains a 17 -minute feature about the recording of the band'slatest album World of Our Own. The two -disc release isbased on the 2001 Exciter album, which was supported by afive -month worldwide tour. Scheduled for a May 27 release, OneNight In Paris offers Depeche Mode's two-hour 18 -song gig atthe Palais Omnisports de Paris Bercy, France, on one disk. How to produce and release a DVD-VOlivier Robert -Murphy, UniversalMusic International's VP DVD,hates "vanilla" music DVDs. Inhis view, a vanilla DVD lacksimagination as the content ofVHS music video is simply trans-ferred on to the new digitalformat with very few changes.

For him, a new format callsfor more vision. "It brings youcloser to the artist and offers asmany creative possibilities asthere are artists," he tells M&M.

In addition to creative insight,however, the practical process ofproducing music DVD-V (digital ver-satile disk -video) calls for more par-ticipants, time, and content materialcompared to the production of itsanalogue VHS counterpart.

Based on interviews withindustry experts, M&M gives astep-by-step guide to the vari-ous tools, skills, and technologyneeded to produce a musicDVD-from the thinking, throughthe design, manufacturing, mar-keting, promotion to distribution.By Juliana Koranteng.

Pre -productionrequirements

Experts agree that a VHSmusic production can takebetween three to six weeks,from concept to manufactur-ing. The DVD, on the otherhand, requires about threemonths. By the time produc-tion kicks off, the label willcertainly have cleared the necessaryrights. For each title, a label needs tobudget for £5,000-£20,000 (euros 8,150 -32,600) for the authoring alone (seebelow). UMI's Robert -Murphy estimatesthat a music DVD can cost between£7,000 and £60,000 per title from themaster recording to the final product.

The participants

The artists, man-agement and thelabel devise andselect the content,which could bespecially createdor based on liveperformances.Also participating

are the video/DVD producer, the con-cert's producer, an executive producerand a music producer from the label,the video's director, and the recordingstudio that mixes the audio for sur-round -sound. Also required is some-one to handle the menu graphics anddesign. Various testers, including

In addition to filming the acts in sur-round -sound and high -quality video,the labels and managers request orsuggest that artists put aside extratime for bonus features, such as film-ing documentaries, interviews, rarebehind -the -scenes footage and perfor-mance shot at varied angles. TheDVD producer delivers the content onDigital Betacam master disks to exec-utives supervising the project at thelabel or commissioning company. "ForDVD releases, we will decide whatthe potential international sales arelikely to be and then commission anoutside authoring studio," WVI'sEvans explains. "The commissioningis likely to be done by the repertoireowner. If it's an artist from one of ourUS labels, the DVD will often be

Expertise required in anauthoring studioAbbey Road Interactive (ARI), thenew -media unit of the world-famousrecording studio Abbey Road, was thefirst UK authoring house to make amusic DVD-V. It was Queen-Greatest Flicks I and II in 1997. "Lastyear [2001] was really the year themusic industry twigged on to DVD,"says ARI creative director SamanthaHarvey. "Our teamwent from 17 to 22."Her staff includesthree producers whomanage the individualprojects and ensurethe different activitiesmeet deadlines. ARI isone of the authoringstudios that also offersdesign services withseven designers whowork out what the con-sumers should findwhen operating their

DVD players. Two softwareengineers work on theDVD-Rom interactive ele-ments, such as websitelinks. And because the soft-ware is multimedia, theengineers will test the con-tent with the same preci-sion required for testingcomputer games. Four peo-ple directly handle theauthoring and encoding.And a quality -control executiveensures the DVD (sent back on a mas-ter Digital Linear Tape) for the label'sapproval meets all the requirements.

Test copies made from the DLT mas-ter are sent to the authoring studio,dedicated testing companies and thecommissioning company (e.g. thelabel) to ensure there are no errors or

player -compatibility prob-lems. All testers file reportson their findings. If theyfind any glitches, theyinform the commissioningcompany, which returns acopy of the findings to theauthoring studio to resolve.WVI's Evans explains whymeticulous testing is vital:"One title we produced wastested and approved by the

testing centre and the authoring stu-dio, but a problem was discoveredafter a consumer complained.Apparently, the authoring studio hadput the surround -sound channels inall the wrong places and the testingcentre had failed to notice." A solu-tion, Evans advises, is to involve theaudio engineer who worked on theoriginal recording in the testingprocess.

Manufacturing

Once the approved content on theDLT is signed off, it is glass masteredfor the mass reproduction to begin.Some multinationals operate theirown replication plants. UMI has onecalled UML (Universal Manu-facturing & Logistics) in Hanover,Germany. Sony Music operates itsDADC plant in Salzburg, Austria.The labels' affiliation to some ofEurope's biggest replication plantscan sometimes cause conflicts. "When

Tiziano breathes life into Italian industryby Mark Worden

Tiziano Ferro, the 22 -year -old R&B/pop singer -songwriter whose impressive debut has been asource of comfort for executivesthroughout Italy's beleaguered record industry,is now the subject of a European promotion cam-paign. His debut single, Xdono, which sold100,000 copies in Italy last summer, isalready clocking up impressive results in France,and EMI has high hopes for the album, RossoRelativo, which is due for foreign release inMay. Fabrizio Giannini, EMI Italy's head ofA&R, says, "This project is a European priorityfor EMI and it's rare for a new artist to receivethis kind of treatment."

Ferro (pictured) himself tells Music & Media: "I'mamazed by the speed with which things have hap-pened in France, as it can be a tough market forItalian artists, while Spain tends to be easier. I thinkthe fact that [France has] more of an R&B culturethan Italy meant that they might have been readyfor an artist like me. I think that could also explainwhy Italian labels were slow to sign me."

Giannini is confident that Ferro, whosedebut album has sold 160,000 units in Italysince its release in October, will be a major bor-der breaker. "The album had a simultaneousrelease in Switzerland, where it has gone gold,while Xdono, has already sold 20,000 units inFrance and is number 9 in FNAC's sales list. Asfor Germany, we'd like to get him to open for theforthcoming Kylie Minogue tour, while we seeSpain, for which a Spanish version of the albumhas been recorded, as a potential launch pad for

Latin America." This is a territory that Gianniniknows well, having worked with one of Italy'smajor exports, Laura Pausini, when he was atWarner. "Tiziano is certainly up there in termsof talent," adds Giannini, "he's one of the mostimpressive artists I've come across in 10 years."

Ferro's sudden success is all the more surpris-ing considering he was rejected by several labelsbefore signing to EMI Italy. The artist was discov-ered by the veteran husband and wife team ofAlberto Salerno and Mara Majonchi. SaysMajonchi: "We were impressed by Tiziano's abilityto communicate with an audience. We asked himto join us and we proceeded to work hard on every-thing, including his physical appearance, gettinghim to shed 30 kilos with a special diet. In additionto being creative, he's also very determined."

R&B is certainly a key element for Ferro, whohas been called "the Italian Craig David". Yetthere is also a strong dose of romantic melody, inthe Pausini and Eros Ramazzotti mould.According to Luca Viscardi, head of music at theCHR network, RTL 102.5 Hit Radio, Ferro shouldstick to the latter if he wants to enjoy mega salesabroad. Viscardi comments: "We played the firstsingle, Xdono, all the time, while the second, theraunchier L'Olimpiade, wasn't as popular. Histhird single, the romantic ballad, Imbranato, onthe other hand, has just been amazing: we'veaired it extensively since January. It's the perfectmelodic pop that foreign audiences kind of expectfrom Italy. An Italian R&B artist like Zuccheromay achieve respectable sales abroad, but it's thePausinis and the Ramazzottis who sell in hugequantities."

Jon Baker moves Forward!by Malang Kang

Adelante is the latest project frommusic visionary Jon Baker (pic-tured). The former CEO and founderof Gee Street Records (Stereo MC's,PM Dawn, Gravediggaz), which hesold to V2 in 1999, describes the dubfusion of Jamaican, Latin andCuban influences on the collective'sself -titled album as the "TransglobalSoul Movement". Recorded for hisnew indie Forward! Recordings, thealbum is released through EpicFrance on April 30.

Among performers onthe album are BobMarley's son Ky-mani,alternative reggaemanFarenheit, DominicanRepublic singer Karuand Italian reggae musi-cian Alberto d'Arcola.Sung in English,Spanish and Jamaicanpatois, with nods to different peri-ods of reggae music, the culturally -rich album was co -produced byItalian composer Michele Vicino(Gypsy Kings) and Carlos Bess(Wu -Tang), and masterminded byexecutive producer and A&R him-self, Jon Baker. "This music has avery broad crossover appeal butstill maintains its integrity," hesays. "But I'm not pretending to bea purist about it, either. It is truly`global' without ending up as mar-ginalized world music."

Baker could have releasedAdelante in the US or UK, but

opted for France. Says Baker: "Isaw a renaissance happen herefive or six years ago. As far as I'mconcerned, France has the mostexciting music coming out ofEurope at the moment." ThierryChassagne, managing director ofEpic Group France adds, "Francehas always had a precursor onworld music and Adelante is a pri-ority for us. The music is orientedaround party and celebration-aquality project with a realcrossover potential."

The first cut off thealbum is Fire Burn, fea-turing Ky-mani, whichwill come out in thesummer. A tour startedat the end of April andcontinues through thesummer in France andthen Europe. AntoineGouiffes-Yan, interna-tional marketing man-

ager for Sony Music France,states: "We're going to monitorFrance closely and adapt ourinternational strategies according-ly, starting with Germany andItaly. Adelante is the perfectcrossover project, not just for areggae or an urban youth audi-ence-there's a track for every-one." Adds Chassagne, "Wealready have strong interest fromother territories. Before, we onlysold records in France, but todaythere is also music that travelsacross frontiers-and-not only pro-jects from the US or England."

CULTURE VULTUREThe Nortec Tijuana mix of 1 GiantLeap's My Culture (PalmPictures/UK) is a mixture of clat-tering percussion, symphonicbreakdowns and booming bassend. Thanks to the tunefulness ofthe original and Nortec's willfullyeccentric approach, this version isamongst the best of this latestseries of remixes of 1 Giant Leap'srecently released album.

ABSOLUTELY NOTHING

Luke Slater's Nothing At Alltaken from latest album AlrightOn Top (Mute Records/UK), is an

interesting mixture of analoguesynth sounds with an undeniable'80s feel and a pure pop construc-tion-easily the most commercialtrack he's released. Of the remixes,King Unique's Chocolate Orange isa dynamic take with somber riffingand a twisted, squeezed slice of thevocal repeated mantra -style, plusan army of percussion and somewell-timed drops.

URBAN SOU N DSCAPESDan Butler is the writer/producerbehind the aptly named SketchesOf The City by Square City(Pagoda/UK). Saturation featuresa syncopated groove and wistfulharmonics while Urban Wildlife isminimal, pleasantly strange andrelentless. Mental Pull features amelancholic, meandering pianopart that floats in and out of themix and Guided By Robots soundslike Kraftwerk mixed with earlyVangelis. Taj recalls the interior ofa church with its soaring organsounds and sense of space whileEnter The Light again sees Butlermaking good use of split harmon-ics on a track featuring a ghostlyorchestration reminiscent ofSergio Leone. Closing tracks,Farewell To The City, A Walk OnThe City Plains and Kin completethe journey. Although it is oftensaid correctly that dance musicand albums are a bad fit, SketchesOf The City is an excellent effort.

African, half -German 29 -year -old singer grew up inBerlin before relocating to Stuttgart, one of thecentres of German hip -hop and home of her labelFour Music. Denanlane's first step into music wasappearing on German hip -hop outfit Freundeskreis'sophomore album Esperanto, released in 1999, alsothrough Four Music. Although Denalane citesAmerican music including soul, R&B, jazz and hip -hop as her main influences, she expresses heridentity as a German by singing in her native tongue,coining the phrase "Afro-Americano-Germanic" todescribe her work. "It's very good quality soul, almostblues, actually," says Frank Nordmann, head ofmusic at Urban station Jam FM in Berlin. "But I'msure it will be difficult to add it to the rotation lists ofmainstream radio, and we don't have enoughstations here with the appropriate format. ATB's You're Not Alone (Kontor), an excellentcover of the old Olive hit (RCA), stages a recov-ery this week to climb from five to three. Olive'soriginal version peaked at nine on the DanceTraxx chart in May 1997. The ATB updatedebuts on dance charts in Italy and the CzechRepublic this week.

Colombia's pride and joy Shakira moves upfive notches to seven with Whenever, Wherever(Epic). The track is performing very well ondance charts in Scandinavia, where it tops bothFinnish dance charts at the moment.

Ferry Corsten's Punk (Tsunami) jumps from15 to eight, making it an extraordinary weekfor Dutch repertoire-three tracks within thetop 10 come from the region, includingMad'house's Dutch singer Buse at number two.

4 Strings's Take Me Away (Liquid), climbsback up the chart from 33 to 15, thanks toentries in Denmark, Norway and Belgium.Meanwhile, fellow French act Shakedown's AtNight (Naive) moves up to 18. The track enjoyssuccess in the same countries as 4 Strings, aswell as in Italy.

UK -signed German act TimoMaas' (pictured) Shifter(Perfecto) debuts at 29-thehighest new entry of the week.And British Jive Records' danceimprint Pepper has recentlydiscovered Sylver's Turn TheTide (BYTE), which enjoyed astint on the Dance Traxx chart

in the summer of 2000. Recent success in theUK could help the track return to the DanceTraxx Top 40 real soon. Also, R.O.O.S.' InstantMoments (Basis Beat), a Dutch floorfiller thatpeaked at six just before Christmas 1997, isbubbling under and could re-enter the chartafter more than four years.

US Christian rock-ers P.O.D.'s Youth OfThe Nation(Atlantic) comesinto the EuropeanRadio Top 50 at 46this week, as thehighest new entry.The track has beenpicked up by sta-

tions such as rock outfit Delta Radio in Kiel,Germany, CHR station Europe 2 in Franceand CHR station NRJ in Sweden. "This is afantastic tune, Linkin Park style, which isincredibly popular at the moment," enthusesNRJ Sweden's head of music Fredrik Severin.

"They played in Stockholm in February, for400 people, and they were great. I myself likeLinkin Park and Limp Bizkit, and this song iscompletely right just now. Listeners are notput off by the fact that they are a Christianband, although if they had been political, itcould have been a problem."

He adds: "Carola is a Christian and she isthe most -played Swedish artist on the radiohere. But it seems that the record companydon't want to bring up the band's religion inSweden-they feel it wouldn't give them any-thing extra. I suppose rock artists are meantto live a cooler life-sex, drugs and rock'n'roll."He says that the band's religion was neverseen as problematic when playlisting the song."I don't judge a song by its lyrics or what opin-ions the band might have, but the whole song."

There Goes The Fear, the firstsingle off the album, came out inthe UK on April 15. Released as aone-track CD single and a two -track 10 -inch single, both formatswere deleted on the day of release.Some 50,000 units were shipped,of which 26,000 were sold by end ofplay on April 16. It entered atnumber 13 on M&M's EurochartHot 100 Singles.

The instant deletion was part ofa wider plan to kick-start theDoves' campaign in continentalEurope and the rest of the world."We have focussed on the UK up tothis point," says Kevin Brown,international director for CapitolUK. "We are hoping it will open updoors in Europe which have beenclosed to Doves."

The continental European cam-paign proper kicks off next monthand comprises a tour taking inGermany, Holland, France andItaly. "Release dates will be tai-lored according to the various ter-ritories," reports Brown.

The Last Broadcast took eightmonths to record was produced bythe band themselves, with addi-tional input from Primal Screamproducer Max Heyes and NewOrder collaborator Steve Osborne.

"We recorded it in variousplaces around Britain," says theband's singer Jimi Goodwin. "Man-chester, Brixton-and we hiredsome cottages in Cumbria becauseit's cheaper and, with not havingto watch the clock, you can experi-ment. Everyone brought in songsfrom home-no jamming. Wemucked in with each other's songsand added to other people'sdemos-Doves is a proper three-way street, not one writer."

"With their second album itreally is a journey," commentsAlex Jones-Donelly, editor of musicpolicy at UK public CHR BBCRadio 1, which B -listed the singleon its release. "The expectationand interest from people is therebecause they discovered [the firstalbum] and weren't bombarded byrecord company hype. But it's adifferent game for them now-they've been discovered, so theirgame has to rise."

Doves have played 20 arenashows with Travis in the UK andare rehearsing for a UK tourbeginning April 29 to co-incidewith the album release. The tourwill preceed the band's jaunt tocontinental Europe.

They will then be heading out tothe US at the end of May hoping tocapitalise on their nascent populari-ty and positive press coverage there."I think that gigging will be ourbiggest tool in the States or any-where," says Goodwin. "We lovegigging out there, and they're veryappreciative."

Ritz 1035 sacks all its presenterswho departed Ritz 1035 last year afterjust a few months as its managingdirector.

The AM station's "seven or eight"freelance presenters were sacked byWinter following the distribution of anunofficial press release to the industry.

However, it is anticipat-ed that The Box's interactivity willexpand significantly following itstake-over by Viva, whose new jointventure channel in Germany withAOL Time Warner, Viva Plus, fea-tures a high level of audience partic-ipation, with viewers able to use thechannel's internet, SMS, WAP, e-mail and telephone services to votefor what goes on air.

"The Box's business model offersmany ideas for expanded interactiveservices and products, which couldwell be an advantage in the contextof future broadband and mobile sys-tems," says Viva Media CEO DieterGorny (pictured).

2001 was the first year The Boxhas been profitable, with revenuesof euros 4.33 million. The channel-which is not related to Emap's UKmusic TV channel of the same

Meanwhile, in the wake of itsacquisition of by MTV last year,TMF is also set to become moreinteractive, in a bid to differentiateitself from MTV Holland.

"At TMF the viewer will beking, while at MTV you will findyourself entertained," says MTVHolland's head of programmingand production Marjory VanMackelenbergh.

TMF will experiment with view-er interaction via the Internet,broadband and mobile phones. "We

think the Dutch audience is open forsomething new," says Van Macke-lenbergh. "There's a very activecommunity at TMF."

The new MTV Holland, mean-while, will focus on Dutch -speakingpresenters and local content. "Manyof TMF's VJs will move over toMTV, which will be in presented in

Dutch or will make use of subtitles,"says Van Mackelenbergh.

While TMF will target 13-34 yearolds, MTV will aim its output at anolder 18+ audience. "It [MTV] willresemble the programming of theGerman MTV2 Pop with 75% 'popmeets style' and 25% mainstreamrap, dance, and trance," explainsVan Mackelenbergh.

The new MTV programming willbe launched in collaboration withnational CHR station Radio 538with a live open air show in Amster-dam on April 30.

TMF is currently the marketleader in Dutch music TV in Hol-land with a 0.7% share, while MTVHolland accounts for 0.4% and TheBox stands at 0.3%.

Sony Music suffers small downturn in profitsLONDON - Sony Corp.'s music division posted a5% growth in revenues at $4.83 billion (euros5.4bn) for the financial year ending March 312002, while its operating income fell slightly by1.6% to $152 million.

Close to 70% of the music divsion's revenueswere generated by Sony Music EntertainmentInc. (SMEI), which covers the world outside ofJapan, with the remainder coming from itsJapanese music activities. In a statement, thecompany notes that if taken on a US dollarbasis, SMEI sales decreased 4% and operatingincome by 20%.

Best selling albums for the period includeDestiny's Child's Survivor, Shakira's LaundryService, Michael Jackson's Invincible andJennifer Lopez's J. Lo.

Sony Corp explains that the decline inoperating income was the result of "ongoing

restructuring activities-including thereduction in the number of worldwideemployees, the rationalisation of digital mediainitiatives and portfolio investment, and thesettlement of certain significant industry -widelitigation."

In the statement, Sony adds that "the benefitof aggressive worldwide restructuring and costreduction initiatives partially offset the drop inoperating income," revealing that during thefiscal year, total restructuring charges reached$68 million.

For fiscal year 2002-2003, Sony Corp.forecasts that its music division will see "animprovement in operating income throughfurther implementation of restructuringinitiatives," and "an increase in sales as aresult of the strength of the new releaseschedule."

EMI Recorded Music has established a newglobal marketing structure, operating under thedirect control of EMI Recorded Music vice-chairman David Munns. Dutch dance distributor Moxmusic wasdeclared bankrupt on April 16 after six years ofexistence. The company distributed vinyl from anumber of labels to specialist dance music shops.General manager Frank Bos will now take upthe same position at Dutch dance label ID&T.

Manager director of Kirch-owned music andtalk station 100.6 in Berlin, George Gafron hasresigned, giving rise to rumours that the stationmay be up for sale. US media company ClearChannel is the hotly tipped as a buyer. Gafronhas also resigned as managing director of TVBerlin, also owned by the troubled Kirch familycompany, and will concentrate on his other job aseditor of Berlin tabloid newspaper BZ.

UK music retailer HMV Group has unveiledthe prospectus for its initial public offering on theLondon Stock Exchange, listing an indicativeoffer price of 190p -220p per share. The flotation isnow set for May 15. About 70% of HMV shares willbe offered to the public; most of the remainder willbe split between equity stakeholders EMI andventure-capital group Advent International.
