Hello my funky fellows !Ganz schön kalt geworden da drau-ßen! Da macht man es sich am besten mit einer Tasse Glühwein und ein paar Plätzchen im Warmen gemütlich. So lässt sich dann auch entspannt auf das vergangene Jahr zurück blicken, es ist ja wieder ne Menge passiert...Im April ist ein wichtiger Charakter unserer Szene verstorben. Zwar hat Albert Hofmann niemals eine Platte veröffentlicht oder ein Festival veran-staltet- jedoch hat seine Entdeckung des LSD die gesamte Psychedelic Bewegung begründet. Doch auch ohne den guten Doktor war der Sommer ziemlich trippig und konnte mit durchaus amtlichem Wetter und einer Reihe hervorragender Festi-vals überzeugen. Was sich auf den Erwachsenenspielplätzen musika-lisch und sonst so getan hat, könnt ihr in unserem großen Jahresrück-blick nachlesen. Apropos Musik: Noch läuft unser Producer Contest, wir sind also weiterhin gespannt auf eure Sounds! Was ist sonst noch passiert? Ach ja, meine Wenigkeit, Roberdo, ist zur Redaktion hinzu-gestoßen. Neben Musik und Party dreht sich bei mir alles um Fotogra-fie, Reisen und Surfen.Wir wünschen euch eine gute Jah-resendzeit, frohe Weihnachten und einen rauschenden Start ins neue Jahr!

In April an important character of our scene passed by. Albert Hof-mann never released any track neit-her organized a festival- but his dis-covery of LSD originated the whole Psychedelic movement. But also without the good doctor it became a very trippy summer with quite nice weather and some wonderful festi-vals. What happened on the adult playgrounds around the globe in general and in a musical point of view, you will find in our big end-of-year review. Apropos music: Our Producer Contest is still running, so we are looking forward for your sounds! What else happened? Well, my humble self, Roberdo, joined the editorial team. Beside music and party its all about photography, tra-veling and surfing in my life.We wish you an excellent end-of-year time, a merry X-Mas and a kicking start into the new year!

Ein musikalischer Trend, der sich schon im Vorjahr deut-

lich abzeichnete ist vollends zum Durchbruch gekom-men: Techno war ein ganz großes Thema. Deutlich zu hören war dies auf den Alter-native Floors von Festivals und Parties: Oft unterschie-den sich die DJ Sets hier nur

End-of-year: The time of short days and frosty temperatures in the northern hemisphere, the time of busy shopping streets in the cities and the time of end-of-year reviews in the media. So also I leaned back with a cup of hot tea and recalled the year 2008. Furthermore I asked some musician colleagues for their opi-nion on this topic. How did the music develop? Which releases and newcomers were the most promising ones and why? And how did the labels react against the ongoing difficulties on the music market?

A musical trend which already sho-wed during the previous year has come to an entire breakthrough:

Also habe auch ich bei einer guten Tasse Tee das Jahr 2008 Revue passieren lassen und außerdem ein paar Musikerkollegen um ihre Statements zu diesem Thema gebeten. Was ist musikalisch so passiert, welche stilistischen Entwicklungen gab es? Welche Veröffentlichungen und Newcomer waren wirklich bemerkenswert und warum? Und wie reagierten die Labels auf den anhaltend schwierigen Musikmarkt?

noch dadurch von denen auf rei-nen Techno Veranstaltungen, dass sie nicht von Vinyls sondern von CDs gemixt wurden. Es sei den, sie wurden von DJs wie Gianni Viti-ello oder Marcus Carp aufgelegt, die ursprünglich aus der Trance Szene kommen, dann jedoch zum Techno wechselten und nun mit die-ser Musik wieder auf Trance Festi-vals gebucht werden. Nun gut, Pro-gressive Trance hatte von je her eine gewisse Nähe zu Techno, da ist es irgendwo logisch, dass es früher oder später zu gewissen Überschei-dungen kommt. Aber was ich inte-ressant finde, ist die Tatsache, dass auch Musikerkollegen und Labels, die eigentlich für herzhaften, schnel-len Psy Trance bekannt sind, mitt-lerweile eine Affinität zu Techno entwickeln. Es ist wirklich erstaun-lich, wer plötzlich alles auf diesen Sound abfährt!

Vor diesem Hintergrund ist es denn auch nicht wirklich überraschend, dass meine Musikerkollegen insbe-sondere jene Newcomer und Veröf-fentlichungen als besonders bemer-kenswert ansehen, welche den aktu-ellen Trend zum Techno repräsen-tieren. Gabe wurde immer wieder als besonders innovativ gelobt, wie auch das Projekt Velkro des gleichen Künstlers, der sich zuvor u.a. mit dem FullOn Act Wrecked Machines einen Namen machte. Auch das stark technolastige aktuelle Per-fect Stranger Album gilt bei vie-len als herausragende Veröffent-lichung des Jahres.

Well, at least Pro-gressive Trance always had a certain connection to Techno so its kind of logical development that there are some overlaps now. But what was very interesting for me is the fact, that even many of those DJs and labels, who are well known for their rather twisted psychedelic sounds, now have an affinity for Techno. Its really astonishing how many people dig this sound now!

Against this background its not really surprising that especially those newcomers and releases are held to be remarkable and outstan-ding, which represent this current trend for Techno sounds. Gabe and Velkro were applauded again and again for

ihre Musik selbst vermarkten.

The most of the cool trance labels are already dead. We have now 10 albums released, but never more than 2 on one label, because the labels don´t last

long enough. Some acts already started their own labels, this maybe an answer to this trend.

By the way: This act just released two chilly Drum’n’Bass tracks a few days ago… Another promising act from Israel is AKD who delivered some very deep and atmospheric Trance tracks. Not really a newcomer but nevertheless popular like never before was Nee-lix, who also broke new grounds with his last album by getting inspi-red from songwriting. Friends of faster sounds were pleased espe-cially by Krunch, Toxical and Phobia. All together FullOn developed into the direction of Pop music, unfortu-nately at the expense of the psyche-delic moments. Quite some people criticized the resulting superficiality and a lack of deepness.

Was mich echt ankotzt sind die Künstler, die Geld für ihren Auftritt oder ihre Veröffentlichung sehen wollen und ihre Musik an gecrackter

Software geschraubt haben, für die sie niemals bezahlt haben! Diese Leute geben der Musikindustrie nichts zurück und sollten kein Geld verdienen!

What makes me sick is that a lot of the Artist are asking money to perform their live-acts or dj-set on parties with music made from »cracked pro-

grams« or illegal music downloads which they never paid for, so why should they earn money when they don‘t put any

money back to the music industry.

Analog zur Musik, die mehr und mehr auf den Körper und nicht mehr auf den Kopf zielt, hat sich auch die Szene verändert: Es wurden weniger lächelnde Partybesucher gesichtet, die Atmosphäre häufig als „kühl“ beschrieben. Schon lange besteht unsere Szene nicht mehr nur aus Freaks sondern auch aus einer ganzen Reihe Men-schen, die sich an den üblichen Nor-men und Werten der westlichen Gesellschaft orientieren. Aber ich will euch jetzt nicht dem üblichen Gelaber über den Spirit langweilen, der immer mehr flöten geht. Denn letzten

Abwechslung war immer ein Teil von Psy Trance und ist der Grund, warum es die

Szene nach all den Jahren immer noch gibt. Neue Einflüsse halten das Genre am Leben und eröffnen

Endes sind wir uns in einem einig: Die Leute, die auf Trance Parties kommen tun dies immer noch um Spaß und einfach eine gute Zeit zu haben. Das zeichnet unsere Szene nach wie vor aus und macht sie zu etwas besonderem!

Besorgniserregend ist hingegen die Situation jener, die uns mit unserer essentiellsten Droge versorgen: Die Musiklabels sind stark vom anhal-tenden Trend zum file sharing und Raubkopieren betroffen. Selbst bei großen, etablierten Labels reichen die Einnahmen aus CD Verkäufen oft gerade noch aus, um die Produktion zu finanzieren. Als Reaktion darauf wird immer mehr Material nur noch digital im Internet veröffentlicht, was einerseits die Produktionskosten mini-miert, andererseits jedoch die per-fekte Vorraussetzung für file sharing schafft: MP3s... Was auf CD veröffent-licht wird, muss wirklich etwas qua-litativ ganz besonders hochwertiges sein. Hinter der Einführung des neuen Mediums „Compact Stick“ steht die Idee, das Release mit zusätzlichen Tracks, Bildern und Videos anzurei-chern und so attraktiver zu machen. Andere sehen im klassischen Musik-markt gar keine Zukunft mehr und plädieren für eine lizenzfreie Veröf-fentlichung der Musik, da die Künst-ler ohnehin nur noch durch Auftritte Geld verdienen können.

Bei all den neuen Trends und Ent-wicklungen im Jahre 2008 ist und bleibt eines entscheidend: Hauptsa-che ihr hattet eine gute Zeit!

Musikstil und ich liebe es, meine Zeit auf einem Festival zwischen knallhartem Tran-

ce und eher langsamen Beats zu verbringen... Im Endeffekt ist ein Trance floor der beste Dance-

floor und verschiedene Arten von Musik bedeuten Abwechslung, das sollte nicht als Störung der Trance

Szene gesehen werden..

Psy Trance has always been the most open minded and tolerant dance music genre, and I just love to be able to spend my festivals in between the trance may-hem and some low beat stuff... After all, a good trance dancefloor is the best dancefloor and having different

styles of music is fun and refreshing, not something to be seen as an intrusion to the trance scene.

atmosZwar wurde Thomasz Balicki während des vergangenen Jahres auf vielen Festivalbühnen gesichtet und rockte zahllose Partys rund um den Planeten, jedoch blieb es in Punkto neuer Veröffentlichungen sehr ruhig um den schwedischen Meister des Progressive Trance. Um so erfreuter fielen die Reaktionen aus, als kürzlich verschiedene Gerüchte von einer offiziellen Ansage bestätigt wurden: Es wird noch vor Ende des Jahres ein neues Atmos Album geben! Kurz vor seinem Paragliding- Urlaub in Indien erwischte ich ihn für ein Interview...

Wie schon das erste Atmos Album wird nun auch „Tour de Trance“ auf Spiral Tracks erscheinen. Aber auch sonst gibt es Parallelen zu jenem sensationellen Debüt: „Das neue Album ist im Prinzip in die gleiche Richtung produziert wie mein erstes, Headcleaner. Was diesmal jedoch grundsätzlich anders ist, ist die Tatsache, dass ich nicht die Standard- Trance Sounds verwendet habe, die man sonst von meinen Produktionen kennt. Ich habe die

gleiche Art von Songs wie auf dem Headcleaner Album produziert, jedoch mit Minimal, Electro House und Techno Elementen gearbeitet. Anstatt viele Delays und Effekte einzusetzen ist das Arrangement diesmal eher trocken.“ Für Atmos ist es als Produzent essentiell, sich stets weiter zu entwickeln: „Es mag ja sein, dass ich schon vor 8 Jahren meinen eigenen Sound gefunden habe, aber man muss im Kopf behalten, dass man sich als Musiker ständig weiter entwickelt! Wenn ich an dem Sound kleben geblieben wäre, den ich vor 8 Jahren produ-ziert habe, dann wäre ich heute ver-mutlich einer dieser „Dinosaurier“... Anstatt immer wieder Old School Sachen zu machen, habe ich mich diesmal auf den aktuellen Sound bezogen“.Dabei versteht Thomasz Balicki seine Musik nach wie vor als Trance. Für das nächste Jahr plant er mit einem Nebenprojekt auch ein paar stilistische Abstecher in andere Genres, was dann jedoch zunächst inkognito geschehen soll.Doch nicht nur vom Sound her ist „Tour de Trance“ auf der Höhe der Zeit: Als eine der ersten Veröffentlichungen wird dieses Album außer auf CD auch auf dem neuen Medium „Compact Stick“ erscheinen. Diese USB Sticks bieten deutlich mehr Speicherplatz als eine CD, welcher für zahlreiche Extras genutzt wird: 5 zusätzliche Songs, 1 Remix von The Delta, Videomaterial von der Samothraki 2003 mit bisher unveröffentlichter Musik sowie Bild-schirmschoner und hochauflösende Wallpapers zum ausdrucken. Atmos, der in seiner Jugend übrigens von

deutschen Heavy Metal Bands begeistert war, kommentiert dieses neue Medium so: „Ich bin ein großer Filmfreund. Aber ich habe kaum Filme gekauft, bis die DVD auf den Markt kam. Mit den vielen Extras wie Interviews, alternativem Ende usw. war es plötzlich attraktiv zu sammeln. Das gleiche könnte für Compact Sticks gelten: Ich denke, wenn man den Leuten mehr gibt als eine CD, die jeder brennen kann, werden zumindest einige wieder Interesse bekommen, das Release auch zu kaufen.“Zum Abschied gibt uns Atmos ein Zitat der Beastie Boys mit auf den Weg: „Sei aufrichtig zu dir selbst und du wirst niemals stürzen!“

Thomasz Balicki has been seen on many festival stages and rocked countless parties around the globe in 2008 but concerning new releases it got pretty quiet around the Swedish master of Progressive Trance. The more euphoric the reactions became when lately various rumors were confirmed by an official announcement: There will be a new Atmos album before the year ends! Just before he left to India for a paragliding holiday I caught him for an interview...

Just like the very first Atmos album also “Tour de Trance” will now appear on Spiral Tracks. And there are more parallels to that fantastic debut, which was ahead of its time in 2000: “The new album was basi-cally written in the same direction

as my first album Headcleaner. The only thing that is really different is that I did not use the standard Trance soundscapes that you are used to hear in my songs. So I wrote the same kind of songs I used to do on Headcleaner except it has a Minimal / Electro House / Techno soundscape. Instead of using a lot of delay and effects I made a pretty dry arrangement.” As a producer it is essential for Atmos to develop his style: “Maybe I found my style 8 years ago. That’s one thing but you have to remember that as a musician there will be a time when your soundscape changes again, which means that if I would stick to produce my music as I did 8 years ago, I would probably be one of those “dinosaurs” right now... My approach was to write the music I like, write the music I am known for, but instead of doing it the old school way like Trance should sound, I did it and recorded it more analogue and made it sound like the popular Techno from today.” Thomasz Balicki still regards his music to be Progressive Trance. He also plans some experiments in other genres for the next year using a moniker but wants to keep incognito then.But not only from the style of sound “Tour de Trance” is up-to-date: As one of the very first releases it is published not only on CD but also on the new medium “compact stick”. This USB stick features distinctly more space then a CD does. So this version of the album will contain a

lot of extra material: 5 additional tracks, 1 remix by The Delta, a video from Samothraki festival 2003 which also includes unreleased music, screen savers and wallpapers that you can print out in poster size. Atmos, who listened to German Heavy Metal bands in his youth by the way, comments on on this new medium: “I compare it to one thing: I used to be a movie freak and I still am. But I did not buy a lot of movies until the DVD came out. Der Umzug von Amsterdam nach Rotterdam im vergangenen Jahr bedeutete eine große Inspiration für Joshua Gablan: Sein neues Album “The Machine” reflektiert den Vibe die-ser Stadt, die nach dem zweiten Weltkrieg komplett neu aufgebaut werden musste und sich zu einer sehr außergewöhnlichen Metro-pole entwickelte.Und so ist auch der Sound auf dem Album eine neue Mischung aus Full On und Dark. Einige interessante Tracks sind in Zusammen-arbeit mit dem Berliner Act Ectogasmics und der befreundeten Gothic Band Sophya ent-standen. Joshua liebt es, in der Nacht zu spie-len und tags zu tanzen, daher sind die Pro-duktionen, die er bereits auf zahlreichen Dan-cefloors des Planeten präsentierte, stets hart und treibend. Inspiriert wird er von Künstlern wie Absolom, Penta, Human Blue oder Digi-tal Talk aber auch durch Filme oder Jam Ses-sions. Wenn Joshua neben dem Musikprodu-zieren, einem Teilzeitjob und dem Herumtou-ren noch Zeit findet, steht er auf Snowboarden oder es sich einfach mit seinen Lieben gemüt-lich zu machen.

Moving from Amsterdam to Rotterdam one year ago meant a big source of inspiration for Joshua Gablan: His upcoming album “The Machine” reflects the vibe of this city which had to be constructed completely new after the second world war and became a very extraordinary metropolis.

And so also the sound you will find on this album is a new crossover style between Full On and Dark, including some experimental collaborations with Ectogasmics from Berlin as well as the befriended Gothic band Sophya. Joshua loves to play during the night time and dance during the day, so the style he already presented on many dancefloors around the globe is always hard and steady. He gets inspi-red by artists like Absolom, Penta, Human Blue or Digital Talk but also movies and jam sessions are a source of inspiration for him. If Joshua finds some time beside producing music, a part time job and touring around he likes snowboarding and just having a relaxed time with his beloved ones.

Der Anschein der ultra-liberalen Drogenpolitik, den die Nieder-lande auf ausländische Besucher oft machen, trügt: Seit dem 1. Dezem-ber sind Magic Mushrooms dort illegal. Das Verbot ist Folge einer aktuellen politischen Entwicklung. Was viele nicht wissen: Sporen und Mycel, der Grundstoff der Pilze, sind weiterhin legal käuflich.

Die christlich orientierte Regierung wirft schon seit längerem einen arg-wöhnischen Blick auf bewusstseins-verändernde Substanzen, welche die Menschen zu philosophischem Den-ken anregen und vom Glauben an die Bibel abbringen. Nach der Illega-lisierung von Ephedra Produkten (oft in Herbal Ecstasy enthalten) bedeutet das Verbot von Pilzen nun einen wei-tere Einschränkung des Rechts auf Rausch. Begründet wurde das Urteil mit Unfällen, die in Verbindung mit dem Konsum von Pilzen geschahen- und anderen Drogen wie Alkohol und Kokain, wie in dieser Argumen-tation unterschlagen wird! Der Betrei-ber des Headshops Mush-e-Mart ist

mit einigen anderen Aktivisten nun engagiert, das Urteil mit vernünftigen Argumenten anzugreifen.

Appearances of an ultra-liberal drug policy in the Netherlands, which many foreign visitors witness, are deceitful: Since December 1st Magic Mushrooms are illegal there. This

prohibition is the result of some cur-rent political development. What many don’t know: Spores and mycel, the elementary body of mushrooms, are still legal for sale.

Since quite a while the Christian- ori-entated government casts a suspi-cious glance at mind expanding sub-stances, which animate people to think philosophical and independent instead of believing in the bible. After the illegalization of ephedra pro-ducts (an amphetamine- like natu-ral ingredient of many Herbal Ecsta-sys) the prohibition of mushrooms means another restriction of the right for intoxication. The sentence was reasoned by some accidents which happened in connection with magic mushrooms- and other drugs like alcohol or cocaine, which is ignored in this argumentation! The owner of Mush-e-Mart headshop together with some other activists is now engaged in fighting the sentence with some reasonable arguments.
