Open Air !!!Endlich ist es soweit: Die Tage wer-den immer länger, die Klamot-ten immer kürzer und durch das erste Grün der Bäume streicht eine milde Frühlingsbrise. So spaßig eine Nacht im Club manchmal sein mag, jetzt beginnt die Jahreszeit, für die unsere Szene eigentlich lebt: Will-kommen in der Open Air Saison!

Leider müssen wir euch die verspro-chene Vorstellung der Gewinner unseres Mushroom Producer Con-test noch ein bisschen länger schul-dig bleiben. Die Auswertung der vie-len Einsendungen und der noch viel zahlreicheren Votings für diese stellt uns vor eine Aufgabe, die wir noch nicht vollständig geschafft haben. So wird es die Ergebnisse in Kürze zunächst auf mushroom-online.com geben, im nächsten Heft dann end-lich in gedruckter Form.

Nun wünschen wir euch aber erst mal viel Spaß mit dieser Ausgabe. Lasst euch von unserem Schwer-punktthema „Freiluftsaison“ inspi-rieren und genießt beim Lesen ein die Frühlings-sonne!

It‘s finally happening: The days are getting longer and longer, the clo-ths shorter and shorter and a mild spring breeze is stroking the first green leaves. For sure, a club night can be really fun from time to time- but now starts the season for which our scene actually lives: Welcome to the open air season!

Unfortunately you have to wait a little longer for the presentation of the winners of our Mushroom Pro-ducer Contest. The evaluation of all the different submissions and the mass of votes for them sets us a task we were not able to manage com-pletely yet. Therefore the results will be first published on mushroom-on-line.com very soon and be finally printed in the next magazine.

But now we wish you lots of fun with this issue. Get your inspira-tion form our key issue “open air season” and enjoy some sun rays while reading!

Und ein weiteres Viertel gab sogar an, es klein und familiär zu bevor-zugen. Nach unserer Umfrage steht nur etwa jeder Vierte auf richtig große Events. So schön es auch sein mag, die Wahl zwischen etlichen Floors mit Erdbeben simulierenden Soundsystems zu haben - Große-vents bedeuten aber gleichzeitig eine gewisse Anonymität und die Chance, Leute wieder zu treffen sinkt deutlich. Der Trend zum eher Familiären spie-gelt sich auch in der Meinung bezüg-lich der Anzahl von Dancefloors: Nur eine Minderheit wünscht sich mehr als zwei auf den Festivals. So viele sollten es aber für etwa zwei Drittel schon sein, und zwar aufgrund der musikalischen Abwechslung.Es ist ja nicht wirklich neu, dass der Oberbegriff Trance mittlerweile eine

ganz schön große Bandbreite aus verschiedenen Stilen abdeckt, die teilweise miteinander fast nichts mehr gemeinsam haben. Mehr als die Hälfte wünscht diese Vielfalt auch ausdrücklich. Und auch verschie-dene Genres neben Trance gewinnen zunehmend an Popularität: Jeweils etwa ein Drittel wünscht sich mehr Techno, Minimal, Reggae und Dub, aber auch Live Konzerte und mehr Chill Out Musik sind stark gefragt.Ein kleines Detail offenbart eine recht interessante Entwicklung der Szene: Zum Thema Fleisch auf Festivals sagt fast die Hälfte »ja«, nur ein Viertel ist dagegen und der gleichen Menge ist es schlichtweg egal. Hier zeigt sich tatsächlich eine Veränderung des oft erwähnten „Spirit“, der ursprüng-lich meist mit Vegetarismus verbun-den war. A small detail reveals an interesting development of the scene: Concer-ning the question of meat at parties, every second person says ‚yes‘, only every fourth says ‚no‘ and finally the same number of people does not care about this issue. This really shows a certain change of the often mentioned “spirit”, which was origi-nally connected with vegetarianism. And while it used to be quite normal to get really dirty during the week-end a few years ago, nowadays half of the festival visitors put empha-sis on the availability of a suffici-ent number of showers. This also reveals a certain change in the life-style of our scene.Finally workshops, lectures and other activities that go beyond the scope of dancing and party are more and more popular because they mean an interesting variety and offer new experiences and spiri-tual education.I hope lots of your expectations towards festivals become true this summer and wish you a great time on our beloved adult playgrounds!

Beat Hackers – Back To The MusicIn seiner frühen Jugend zierten Poster der Bands Tool und Dream Theater die Wände des Zimmers von Guy Pelet. Diese sind weniger für elek-tronische als vielmehr für ihre herzhafte Rockmusik bekannt, in ihren Songs schaffen sie immer wieder eine interes-sante Verbindung zu klas-sischer Musik. Dieser Einfluss ist dem Israeli Beat Hackers bis heute erhalten geblieben und spiegelt sich auch auf seinem aktuellen Album „Not For Sale“ wider.

Schon sehr früh wuchs die Begeisterung für Psy Trance, jedoch war Guy Pelet auch stets der ursprünglichen, handge-

machten Musik verhaftet und spielt bis heute Schlagzeug, Gitarre und Klavier. Und das macht ein sehr spezielles Flair in seinen Produktionen aus: „Ich nehme immer ein paar echte Instrumente auf, um den Tracks etwas wirklich musikalisches zu geben und manchmal bestimmt das den gesamten Ver-lauf. Dadurch geht einem die Musik wirklich nahe, anstatt nur zur Bewegung zu animieren.“ Mit seinem mittlerweile dritten Album ist Beat Hackers persönlich sehr zufrie-den, die langjährige Erfahrung kommt nun richtig zum Tragen. Und auch die Geburt seines Sohnes hat die Arbeit stark beeinflusst. Und so transportiert es sehr verschiedene Stim-mungen: „Neben vielen heiteren und lustigen Titeln findet sich auch melancholische Tiefe. Für mich ist es das perfekte Album.“ Neben seinen zahlreichen Dancefloor Einsätzen rund um die Welt bastelt der Produzent übrigens auch am Soundtrack für einen französischen Film und an Musik für Konsolenspiele.

During the early youth of Guy Pelet posters of the bands Tool and Dream Theater covered the walls of his room. These are absolutely not known for electronic dance tracks but powerful rock music with a very special connection to classical music in their songs.

This influence has accom-panied Israel hailing Beat Hackers up to today and can also be heard on his recent album “Not For Sale”.

Very early Guy Pelet became enthused by the Trance sound but also always kept his passion for original, hand-made music.

Until today he is playing the drums, piano and guitar. And this fact adds a very special atmosphere to his productions: “I always try

to create a lot of harmony through

some real instruments for my tracks so they sound different and original and sometimes this makes the whole story.” Beat Hackers himself is very satisfied with his meanwhile third album, his longstanding experience got him to produce more precisely and to focus on the original idea. Addtionally the birth of his son was a great source of inspi-ration. “There are some happy tracks and really funny ones but you can hear the deep and sad tracks too. This album for me is the perfect album.” Beside his vast dance floor operations around the world the producer is also doing a soundtrack for a French movie and is engaged in music for games consoles.

La Magica Boutique – Fresh from ItalyMit La Magica Boutique eröffnet in Italien dieser Tage ein neues Label für ausgefallenen und sehr ursprünglichen Psy Trance. Ich habe die beiden Gründer gefragt, was es damit auf sich hat.

Schwierige Zeiten fürs Musikge-schäft - Warum habt Ihr in dieser Situation ein Label gestartet?Piero: Aus reiner Leidenschaft, es geht uns nicht um das Geld. Die erste Compilation soll ein positives Signal an die Szene senden, die gerade zusam-menbricht. Wir wollen zurück zu den Wurzeln und suchen Leute wie uns.

Was ist an der Trance Szene besonders?Luca: Die Trance Szene ist besonders, weil wir viel enger mit der Natur fei-ern als andere Stilrichtungen. Wenn wir uns darauf besinnen, können wir tatsächlich höhere Bewusstseinsebe-nen erreichen und so unser Leben verbessern. Es gibt nach wie vor ein sehr großes Potential!

Wie ist die Szene in Italien?Wir haben ziemliche wenige Traveller und Freaks auf den Partys und leider nur einen geringen Anteil an Leuten, die nach wirklich neuen Erfahrungen suchen. Musikalisch gibt es meist eine gute Balance zwischen Dark und Full On. Progressive gibt es praktisch nicht.

Im Mai kommt Eure erste Veröffentlichung „At The Source“- Was können wir erwarten?

Nun, sie ist aus jahrelanger Freund-schaft, Leidenschaft und spiritueller Forschung entstanden. Also sehr spezielle Musik: Ethno-Funk von Floating Grooves, feinster Retro von Tantrix und Sismic, die Bestimmtheit von Lucas & Pogo und Aphid Moon, der unergründliche Scorb, Mood Deluxe mit interessanten Breakbeat Einschlägen… und noch viel mehr!

Was ist die Zukunft des Psytrance?Beide: Der Niedergang… Aber aus den Trümmern wird eine neue Szene auferstehen!

With La Magica Boutique a new label comes to life in Italy these days, focussing on extraordinary and quite original Psy Trance. I asked the two founders what they have in mind with this project.

Hard times for the music business - Why did you start a label in this difficult situation?Piero: Because it‘s pure passion, it‘s not for making money! The first compilation is to send a positive message to a scene that is falling into decay. We wanna go back to the source and reach people

like us.

What is special about the Trance scene?Luca: It‘s special because we cele-brate the connection with nature more than other music styles, our connections with equinoxes, solstices or eclipses. Remembering this could take you to a higher state of consciousness in your own life. There still is a huge potential in our scene!

How is the scene in Italy?Piero: We have really few travellers and freaky people attending parties and only a low percentage of people with real interest for expe-riences in the gathering. Music that people like mostly is a good balan-ce between Dark and Full On. We don‘t have any Progressive scene.

In May your first compilation “At The Source” will be out. What can we expect?Luca: Well, it came from friendship, passion and years of spiritual research. The soft ethno-funky touch of Flooting Grooves, the fresh, deli-cate retrò of Tantrix and Sismic, the certainty of Lucas & Pogo and Aphid Moon, the deep theatrical Scorb, Mood Deluxe‘s breakbeat touch, and the cerebral dissonances of Mystik Luminate and more…

Bereits im achten Jahr sorgen DJ Mel und Marco Scherer mit ihrem Projekt Meller für amtliche Furore auf den Tanzflächen des Pla-neten: Modern und funky einer-seits, jedoch stets mit einer gehö-rigen Portion psychedelischer Ver-twistung und jeder Menge pro-gressiven Druck zielt ihr Sound eindeutig auf euphorische Dance-floors. Nun geht ihr drittes Studi-oalbum unter dem viel verspre-chenden Titel „Spacewalk“ an den Start.

Technisch hat sich in den ver-gangenen Jahren eine ganze Menge getan: Im neuen Studio stehen eine Reihe interessanter neuer Appa-rate, an denen sich die beiden gehö-rig ausgetobt haben. Und auch musi-kalisch hat man sich auf dem neuen Album weiterentwickelt: Bleibt einer-seits jenes gewisse „Meller fee-ling“ unverkennbar erhalten, so wurde doch auch experimentiert und einige Titel beschreiten neue Sound-wege. Diese führen jedoch auf ver-schiedenen Routen immer wieder zum gleichen Ort: In die Mitte der Tanzfläche!

Since already eight years DJ Mel and Marco Scherer are frequently responsible for some serious party going on at the dance floors of this planet: Up-to-date and funky on the one hand but always with a proper pinch of psychedelic twist and lots of Progressive pres-sure their sound undoubtedly aims euphoric dance floors. Now their third studio album has been released und the promising name “Spacewalk”.

Quite some things happened in the technical aspect: Some exiting new sound machines have shown up inside their new studio and delivered the perfect opportunity for exces-sive jam sessions. And so their musi-cal style has developed from the last album: On the one hand there still is this unique “Meller feeling” inside the tracks, on the other there have also been experiments and some of the tracks break new grounds to pre-tty special moods. In the end the Spacewalk ends up at one point the one or the other way: The centre of the dance floor!

Als im Jahre 1981 das Vinyl-Al-bum „Psychotron“ von Schaltkreis Wassermann erschien, waren darauf zahlreiche Elemente und Ideen zu finden, die in der spä-teren Techno- und Popmusik zum Mainstream avancierten. Heute ist Schaltkreis wieder da als brodeln-der multimedialer Live-Act mit Stella Wassermann an den Vocals und am Kaossillator, während PJ Wassermann den VG-99 Gitarren-Synthesizer und dieKeyboards traktiert.

In der vielfältigen Musik von Schalt-kreis Wassermann spiegelt sich deren langjährige Erfahrung mit elektronischer Musik. When the vinyl album „Psycho-tron“ by Schaltkreis Wassermann was released in 1981, it already included many elements and ideas that were taken up by Techno and Pop music and developed to main-stream later on. Today Schaltkreis is back again with a bubbling mul-timedia liveact with Stella Was-sermann performing vocals and a Kaossillator while PJ Wassermann is working the VG-99 guitar syn-thesizer and some keyboards.

The varied music of Schaltkreis Was-sermann reflects their long-year experience with electronic music. Being a multimedia performance project nowadays, the duo some-times supported by a live percus-sionist is shown to its advantage best on a stage: Though they use two Apple laptops for some backing sounds, the vocals and the live pla-yed instruments create an authentic band feeling which delights Trance freaks of every age. Keine Frage: Schwarzlichtkunst ist integraler Bestandteil unserer Szene, eine Trance Party, auf der es nachts nicht aus allen Ecken magisch leuchtet, ist keine echte Trance Party. Felix the mushroom cover artist

Der Stil des Hamburger Felix Stöver ist unverkennbar und seit Jahren bekannt und beliebt von zahlreichen Partydeko-rationen, Cover- und Flyergestaltungen. Das Bild auf dem Titel dieser Ausgabe trägt den Namen „Fish Dances“ und wurde vom gleichnamigen Song von The Irresistible Force aka Mixmaster Morris inspiriert, welcher auch regel-mäßig in Felix DJ Sets zu hören ist. Das Motiv der Artist Sticker Card ist dagegen eher spontan entstanden: Der Künst-ler wollte einen organischen Kontrast zu den eckigen Formen am linken Bildrand schaffen und so entstand die an einen Meeresbewohner erinnernde Figur. Um den exotisch-tropischen Stil noch weiter zu unterstreichen kam schließlich noch das Meer und der Palmenstrand dazu. Die Wabenartigen Linienstrukturen auf beiden Bildern stellen eine Art unsicht-bare Energiearchitektur da und wurden mit Hilfe von Tesafilmstreifen erstellt, die zunächst übermalt und schließ-lich abgezogen werden konnten. Felix Wurzeln im Comic-Bereich sind nach wie vor zu erkennen, auch wenn diese Motive eine stilistische Weiterentwick-lung bedeuteten.

The style of Hamburg’s Felix Stöver is unmistakable and well-known and popu-lar from numerous party decorations, flyer and cover illustrations since many years. The picture on the cover of this issue carries the name “Fish Dances” and was inspired by a same called song from The Irresistible Force aka Mixma-ster Morris that can be frequently heard in Felix DJ Sets. The motive on the Artist Sticker Card was created rather sponta-neously: The artist wanted to create an organic contrast to the angular structures on the left side of the painting and deve-loped the character that reminds a sea dweller. To underline the exotic-tropical style even more, Felix added the ocean surface and the palm-lined beach. The honeycomb-like line structures on both paintings represent some kind of invisi-ble energy architecture and were created by using tape stripes which could be pain-ted over first and be removed afterwards. Felix comic- roots are still noticeable, alt-hough these motives mean some kind of stylistic development.www.felix-stoever.de

Als ich mich fluchend wieder hochgerappelt hatte, erkannte ich den Grund für mein Stolpern: Richtig, das Zelt wollte ich eigentlich schon im September in den Keller räumen! Doch dann muss ich plötz-lich grinsen, denn ich erkannte, dass sich in diesem Fall die Dinge mal wie-der von selbst erledigt haben: Es ist ja schon wieder Open Air Saison und

das nächste Festival steht buchstäblich vor der Tür! Also habe ich die diversen Campingartikel, die auf meinem Flur

verstreut liegen, nicht in den Kel-ler verfrachtet, sondern statt-dessen mal zusammengefasst, wo diese in den kommenden Monaten weitaus besser aufge-hoben sind.

Zum Start der Open Air Saison ist das Eristoff Tracks Urban Art Forms Festival in Österreich eine vergleichsweise ungewöhnliche Veranstal-tung: Es han-

delt sich näm-lich nicht um ein reines Trance Festi-val, vielmehr fin-den sich hier ver-schiedene Stile zeitge-nössischer elektronischer Tanzmusik nebeneinander. Musikalisch wie auch optisch wer-den hier so einige Superlative auf-gefahren. In Deutschland war

klassischerweise die Liquid Time das erste große Festival, jedoch wird sie in diesem Jahr leider nicht stattfinden. Dafür lädt die Psychedelic Circus als große und internationale, aber den-noch überschaubare Veranstaltung zum ausgelassenen Tanz auf den früh-sommerlichen Acker. Eine Woche spä-ter heißt es dann „Ab zum Wüstenpla-net!“ oder anders gesagt zum größ-ten und längsten Trance Open Air in Österreich: Die Spirit Base wartet mit

einer sehr abgefahrenen Sandgru-benlocation und progres-

sivem Schwerpunkt auf. Am letzten Juniwo-

chenende muss man dann einmal jähr-lich pünktlich sein, denn es ist… genau: Fusion! Mit der wohl

größten Vielfalt an Musikstilen und ihrer

aufwendigen Gestaltung ist sie mittlerweile zur Groß-

On, sondern auch guten Progressive präsentiert. Apropos Progressive: Das Festival für dieses Genre, die Tshi-traka, gönnt sich eine Pause und wird dieses Jahr leider nicht stattfinden. Am zweiten Juliwochenende steigt die Antaris, die als eines der ältesten Trance Festivals immer noch sehr psy-chedelische Akzente setzt und dieses Jahr wahrscheinlich das letzte Mal in gewohnter Größe kommt. Der Juli ist voll von guten Partys, auch die seit einigen Jahren sehr beliebte Spiritual Healing findet in diesem Monat statt. Sie hat einen neuen Termin bekom-men und lädt ab dem 24. auf ihre Location am wunderschönen Bade-see. Ende Juli muss man dann eine nicht ganz leichte Entscheidung tref-fen: Entweder zur Reloaded nach Ita-lien, die bisher unter dem Namen Sonica lief und zu Recht dem einen oder der anderen ein Begriff sein sollte. Oder aber zum VuuV Festival nach Norddeutschland - allerdings nicht mehr nach Putlitz wie in den vergangenen Jahren, denn man hat sich zur Abwechslung mal eine neue Örtlichkeit gesucht. Der hohe Quali-tätstandart und die exzellente Musik, für den diese Veranstaltung steht, blei-ben jedoch unverändert. Die in den letzten Jahren sehr beliebt gewor-dene Spiritual Healing hat dieses Jahr einen neuen Termin bekommen und

lädt am ersten August-wochen-ende auf ihre Loca-tion direkt am wunder-schönen Bade-see. Die wahrschein-lich höchste Garantie auf gutes Wetter bietet am gleichen Wochenendedas Freedom Festival im schönen Portu-gal, auf keinen Fall die Sonnencreme vergessen! Doch auch in Ungarn kann es ganz schön heiß werden, insbeson-dere wenn man am zweiten August-wochenende zu den Sounds aus dem Soundsystem der Ozora rockt, die bereits ihr zehntes Jubiläum feiert. Und schließlich bietet die Wonderland eine wunderschöne Waldlocation und sehr vielschich-tige musikalische Unterhaltung.

The kick-off for the open air season delivers quite an unusual festival in Austria: The Eristoff Tracks Urban Art Forms is actually not a pure Trance event but a massive conglomera-tion of very different styles of modern electronic dance music. From a musi-cal as well as from a visual point of view this event is simply bomba-stic, just the lineup of the Trance area is totally wicked. In Germany Liquid Time classically used to be the first big outdoor festival, but this year it will unfortunately not take place. There-fore you are gently invited to join the Psychedelic Circus on the first week-end of June which gathers an interna-tional crowd but still remains mana-geable in terms of size. One week later there will be an ama-zing party on Dune, the desert planet, at least that is what the sandy loca-tion of Spirit Base festi-val in Austria looks like. The musical focus of

this party is Progres-sive Trance. And on the last weekend in June you have to be in time once a year because it is… exactly: Fusion! Not only large con-

cerning its musical bandwidth

and loving composition, it attracts an ever growing number of visitors every year. The first weekend in July will be under the spell of the Full Moon, the festival will move to another venue this year and fea-tures not only Full On but also some deli-cious Progressive. One week later one of the most vintage Trance festivals takes off: Antaris still sets a very psychede-lic accent and most probably will be its tra-ditional size for the last time. There are heaps of good parties in July, Spiritual Healing will take place in this month too. It has a new date

and invites you to its location: the shores of a beautiful bathing

lake on 24th. By the end of July you have to make a hard decision: Either you go to Reloaded in Italy, which was formerly known as Sonica which

again became famous for its amazing atmosphere. Or

you head towards North Germany, where VuuV festival moved to a new location after many years in Putlitz. What wont change is the high qua-

lity standard and the excellent music selection at this party. Spirtual Healing festival has gained quite some popu-larity during the last years and got a

new date this year: You are invi-ted to its wonderful loca-

tion on a bathing lake on the second week-

end in August. If you are really fond of sunshine and hot tempera-tures you should consider a visit at

Freedom festival in beautiful Portugal the

same date - but don’t for-get a sunscreen and your hat!

But Hungary can also become really hot, especially on the second week-end of August when you are rocking the dance floor at Ozora, which will be celebrating its tenth anniversary this year already. And finally Wonder-land features a really extraordinary venue in the middle of woods and rolling hills as well as a very varied music program.

Stilistische Vielfalt ist auf Trance Festivals schon lange keine Seltenheit mehr: Berüh-rungsängste mit anderen elektronischen Genres wurden überwunden und so findet der Besucher heute eine enorme Band-breite interessanter Tanzmusik. Gerade für diejenigen, die gerne mal über den musi-kalischen Tellerrand hinweg horchen, bie-tet das ‚Eristoff Tracks Urban Arts Festi-val – presented by Electronic Beats‘ zum Sommerauftakt ein wahrhaft bomba-stisches Erlebnis.

Allein schon auf der Psy Trance Bühne tummelt sich so ziemlich alles, was der-zeit Rang, Namen und damit Groove hat: Darker Druck von Penta, treibender Full On von Rinkadink, den Zen Mechanics und U-Recken oder federnder Progressive von Ace Ventura und Vibras-phere, um nur ein paar zu nennen. Im fünften Jahr des Festivals zieht dieser Bereich in ein großes Zirkuszelt, welches Gansedoline und Jamin Murphy mit ihrer Deko zu einem optischen Augenschmaus

aufwerten. Nicht nur der Trance Floor, sondern auch die übrigen Bühnen sind übrigens absolut wetterfest, ohne dass das Open Air Gefühl verloren geht. Wer einen Blick in die anderen Bereiche riskiert, wird auch dort nur das Feinste vom Fei-nen sichten: Seien es die ursprünglich der Psy Trance Szene entstammende Extrawelt, der elektroide Deadmau5 oder sogar die von vielen als das Urgestein des Techno schlechthin gehandelten Herren von Kraft-werk. Und nicht nur in akustischer Hinsicht stellt das Festival einen Superlativ dar:

Pünktlich zum Sommerauftakt in der Han-sestadt liefern die Hamburger Beatfreakz einen spektakulären Doppelschlag: Zum traditionellen Tanz in den Mai wird stil-echt in den Ballsaal geladen und zwar nicht in irgendeinen, sondern in den des FC St. Pauli. Und nach einer nur kurzen Ver-schnaufpause wird das lange Wochenende am 2. Mai mit einem Summer Warm Up unter freiem Himmel fortgesetzt.Die Veranstalter bewiesen schon einige Mal ein Händchen für ausgefallene Locations, wie sie zuletzt mit der Villa Schwarzenberg unter Beweis stellten. Der neue Ballsaal des FC St. Pauli bietet mitten in der Stadt gelegen jede Menge Platz zum Abdrehen auf dem geräumigen Dancefloor, gedie-gene Chillmöglichkeiten auf der Galerie und von der Open Air Lounge einen beein-druckenden Blick auf die Kulisse des Stadi-ons. Musikalisch heizen dort Day.Din und Magoon ein, dessen neuste Sounds erfri-schend progressiv sind.
