MUSCLES OF FRONT OF THIGH

SARTORIUS

QUADRICEPS FEMORIS

ARTICULARIS GENU

Page 3: muscles of lower limb

SARTORIUS

Runs down to the length ofThigh in the anterior compartment LONGEST & THIN Muscle

Tailor`s Muscle

Page 4: muscles of lower limb

ORIGIN INSERTION

Antero Superior iliac spine

Upper half of the notch below the antero superior iliac spine

Upper part of medial surface of shaft of Tibia in front of insertion of the Gracilis and Semitendinosus

FEMORAL ARTERY

Page 7: muscles of lower limb

It is comprises of FOUR Muscles

1. Rectus Femoris

2. Vastus lateralis

3. Vastus medialis

4. Vastus Intermedius

Too useful in effective exercise like SQUAT &

LEG PRESS

QUADRICEPS FEMORIS

Page 8: muscles of lower limb

RECTUS FEMORIS

ORIGIN INSERTION

Arises by two head

Straight head

arises from upper part of the anterior inferior iliac spine

Reflected head

arises from groove above the brim of acetabulum, fibrous capsule of hip joint

base of patella and through common tendon of quadriceps femoris and Ligamentum patellae to tuberosity of tibia

ACTION OF RECTUS FEMORIS1.Extensor of knee joint

2.flexes the hip joint

3.flexes the pelvis on head of femur when thigh is fixed because this muscle can flex the hip while extending the

knee. It is called ``footballer`s muscle``

Page 12: muscles of lower limb

VASTUS LATERALIS

ORIGIN INSERTION

Upper part of inter- trochanteric line of femur

Anterior and inferior borders of the greater trochanter

Lateral lip of gluteal tuberosity

Upper half of lateral lip of linea aspera

Lateral and upper borders of patella through common tendon of quadriceps femoris through ligamentum patellae to the tuberosity of tibia

Extensors of the knee joint

Provides stability to the knee joint

VASTUS MEDIALIS

ORIGIN INSERTION

Lower part of inter-trochantric line of femur

Spiral line of femur Medial line of linea

aspera Upper two thirds of

medial supra condylar line

Medial and upper borders of patella and through common tendons of quadriceps femoris and through ligamentum patellae to the tuberosity of tibia

NERVE SUPPLY

Page 17: muscles of lower limb

1.Extensor of the knee joint

2.During terminal extension at knee, it prevent lateral displacement of patella by retaining it in its groove on patellar surface of femur

3.Provides stability to the

knee joint

ACTION OF VASUS MEDIALIS

Page 18: muscles of lower limb

VASTUS INTERMEDIUS

ORIGIN INSERTION

Upper two thirds of anterior and lateral surface of shaft femur

Lower half of linea aspera

Lateral inter muscular septum

Lateral borders of patella through common tendon of quadriceps femoris and ligamentum patellae to the tuberosity of tibia

a small skeletal muscle

  located anteriorly on

the thigh just above the knee.

It is otherwise called as

subcrureus

ARTICULARIS GENU

Page 21: muscles of lower limb

ARTICULARIS GENU

ORIGIN INSERTION

Anterior surface of lower part of shaft of femur

Upper part of synovial membrane of knee joint

Page 23: muscles of lower limb

Action of ARTICLARIS GENU

During the extension of knee

joint it pulls the synovial membrane (supra

patellar bursa) upwards thus preventing

damage toknee joint
