Muscatine History

Muscatine, seat of Muscatine County, is one of a kind. There’s no other city in the world named Muscatine. It didn’t start out that way. Muscatine was known as “Casey’s Woodpile” in 1833 because steamboats stopped for restocking, then renamed “Bloomington” until 1850. Muscatine has been known as the “Pearl Button Capital of the World” and as the “Melon City.” The latter two are still reflected in business names today. Through the years, Muscatine has always revered the past and embraced the future.

Walk through our historic districts (West Hill and Downtown) to see the magnificent architectural styles of the numerous historic homes and buildings. Following is a list of buildings and structures listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

For more historical facts, information and landmarks see VisitMuscatine.com

CIVIL WAR MONUMENTS AND MARKERS

In 1861, at the beginning of the Civil War, Muscatine men hurried to enlist and Muscatine sent more men to war than any other county in Iowa. Later, in April of 1962, the casualty list from the Battle of Shiloh in Tennessee touched every neighborhood in the city. For 50 years, the city celebrated Shiloh Day.

Muscatine still remembers. Monuments and markers can be found in different parts of the county:

• Camp Strong Marker, Muscatine

• Civil War Monument, Wilton

• Marble Shaft in Cemetery, Wilton

• Muscatine County Courthouse, Muscatine

• Soldier Monument, West Liberty

• Vandever Memorial Bridge on GAR Highway, Southwest of Moscow

The hatchery, with 18 ponds, hatches and grows largemouth bass and bluegill to stock Iowa lakes. Walleye are raised for stocking Iowa’s interior rivers.

The hatchery was established in 1908 and started out as a freshwater mussel research and propagation station to contribute to the local pearl button industry at the time. In 1929 the station became a fish hatchery.

Great River RoadThe Great River Road is a collection of state and local roads which follow the course of the Mississippi River through ten states from Ontario to the Gulf of Mexico. Developed in 1938, the road is 2,340 miles designated with a green-and-white sign showing a river steamboat inside a pilot wheel with the name of the state or province. Muscatine holds a special fondness for the Great River Road as one of our own, Charles H. Young, worked toward establishing the Great River Road and according to some, the idea for the green and white pilot wheel marker distinguishing the route is attributed to Young.

Take a moment to enjoy the view at the Mark Twain Overlook (100-198 Lombard St. Muscatine) located by the entrance to the Norbert F. Beckey Bridge close to downtown Muscatine. Here you can find signage dedicated to Charles H. Young’s work toward establishing the Great River Road.

Maid-Rite Diner In 1926, Fred Angell, a butcher from Muscatine, combined a special cut and grind of meat with a selected set of spices and created the “Maid-Rite Sandwich.” As the legend goes, Angell asked a delivery man to taste his “newest sandwich invention.” After a few bites, the taster exclaimed, “You know, Fred, this sandwich is made right!” Some believe he chose the “Maid” spelling to represent the wholesomeness and pureness of the sandwich.

Maid-Rite was the first franchise granted in America that served food. The Muscatine Maid-Rite continues the tradition that Fred Angell established by serving additional items to customers like Draft Root Beer served in a “Frosty” mug and premium ice cream used in the shakes, malts, floats and sundaes. Maid-Rite continues to provide a 50’s family atmosphere hosted by friendly wait staff.

Today, Muscatine’s Maid-Rite restaurant is located at 2811 N. Hwy. 61, Ste. 1

Norbert F. Beckey BridgeThe only bridge over the Mississippi River that has LED lights is The Norbert F. Beckey Bridge. This bridge carries Iowa Highway 92 and Illinois Route 92 across the Mississippi River between Muscatine, Iowa and Rock Island County, Illinois. The bridge which stretches 1,500 feet from Iowa to Illinois across the Mississippi River, is awash in a rainbow of colors and lights up the night. Mark Twain might have seen his most beautiful sunsets in Muscatine, but modern residents and visitors to this historic river town now have their own light show to enjoy.

Muscatine is your natural destination in all four seasons. When the temperatures dip, many celebrate the natural beauty of the cold months with outdoor activities.

Eagle WatchView the numerous Bald Eagles that frequent the upper Mississippi River and our Riverfront in the winter due to the excellent fishing opportunities created by the churning waters of Lock and Dam No. 16. Photo ops abound.

Spotting scopes are available for viewing the eagles from Pearl City Station in Riverside Park, 100 Harbor Drive, Muscatine, nearby Lock and Dam #16 located 1.3 river miles upstream of the Muscatine Bridge, 33109 102nd Avenue W, Illinois City, Illinois and the Muscatine Power Boat Club located at 35811 102nd Avenue W, Illinois City, Illinois.

As part of the Eagles and Ivories Ragtime Weekend Festival, annually held in January, Park rangers from the Corps of Engineers, naturalists from the Muscatine County Conservation Board and volunteers are available to share information about birds. A craft area is available for kids. The Pearl City Station and Muscatine Power Boat Club buildings are open to warm up and enjoy some hot chocolate and coffee. All activities for this event are free.

For more information, please contact the Muscatine Park Rangers at 563-263-7913.

Disc Golf Ice BowlDisc Golf might sound like a warm “weather” only activity, but not in Muscatine! One of the events the Muscatine Disc Golf Club has started is the “Ice Bowl”. Held in the middle of winter, disc golfers of all skill levels can come out and playfully compete in different divisions. The cold is just the first thing you want to beat! This is a charity event and the day ends with a trophy and hot chili to warm players up. The event has been fun for participants who travel from all over to compete.

For more information visit the Muscatine Disc Golf Club Facebook page, facebook.com/pages/Muscatine-Disc-Golf-Club/507531265975794

SnowshoeingPut on your snowshoes and grab a pole. Wild Cat Den State Park is a great destination for snowshoeing. For people who love the outdoors, this is a favorite wintertime activity. There are other recreation walking trails paved and unpaved in the winter throughout Muscatine.

For more locations see, muscatinecountyconservation.com

Ice SkatingThe Muscatine Riverfront has an ice rink that is brought out in the winter for the public’s use and remains open as long as weather permits.

For more information see, facebook.com/GoodThingsAreHappeningInMuscatineClub

SHOPPINGA visit to Muscatine would not be complete without a little shopping time. Whether you want to browse or are in pursuit of a particular item, one of the five shopping districts in the city is yours to explore:

• Beltway• Historic Downtown• Mall District• Midtown District• Southern District

Outside the city, Blue Grass, Durant, Walcott, West Liberty and Wilton are just a short jaunt away and offer added flavors to your shopping excursions.

BeltwayThe Beltway, also referred to as “the bypass”, is part of US Highway 61 - a major thoroughfare from Burlington and the Quad Cities to Muscatine. The Beltway District is one of the fastest growing areas of the city. It’s home to big box stores, new movie complex as well as small businesses.

Historic DowntownListed on the National Register of Historic Places, this area of Muscatine is a must to explore. Unique specialty shops, historic buildings, Pearl Plaza and the wonderful Riverfront all make up the big community heart of Muscatine.

Mall DistrictThe Muscatine Mall with over 30 stores anchors this district which runs along and extends from Park Avenue, one of the city’s main routes. You’ll find many locally owned and operated businesses as well as some national chains.

Midtown DistrictThe Midtown District is a bit more scattered than the other shopping areas in Muscatine. It includes all the businesses that are not part of the other districts. Take a little time and drive through Muscatine. You never know what you might find, other than good adventure and very special places.

Southern DistrictLocals refer to the Southern District simply as “South End,” as it is the south end of town. Start on Grandview Avenue where you’ll find many locally owned businesses.

You’ll find a wide range of options in Muscatine. Most of the restaurant chains can be found in the Beltway, Southern and Mall Districts. Muscatine’s unique restaurants, our home grown taste, can be found throughout the city and in other communities in the county.
