elcome to Spanish Peaks Country. You’re about to discover one of themost beautiful places in Colorado. The area has been a getaway destina-tion for over a century, attracting visi-tors to its unique natural beauty, out-door recreation and rich history.
Enjoy the small town flavor of LaVeta, Cuchara, Walsenburg andGardner as well as the open ranges ofHuerfano County. As you travel theScenic Highway of Legends you willalso see Trinidad, Stonewall and othersmall towns along the route.
The region is a crossroads… of cul-tures and peoples, of explorers andadventurers, of settlers and travelers. The rich history of the area has beenpassed down both in legend and fact.
The Spanish Peaks (also known asWahatoya or “Breasts of the World”)are a prominent feature with historicalsignificance and rank among the mostimportant landmarks of theSouthwest.
The twin mountains had specialsignificance to the Ute, Apache,Comanche and earlier tribes who livednearby. One of many Native Americanlegends says summer thunderstorms, which cluster about the summits, wereevidence that the Rain God lived onthe Peaks. The Spanish Peaks wereguides for Native Americans, Spanishand French explorers that lead to thesettlements of New Mexico.
As former volcanoes, the SpanishPeaks are known to geologists worldwide, as prime examples of a “stock”or large masses of igneous (molten)rock. Among the most unusual fea-tures of the Spanish Peaks are the great
dikes, which radiate out from themountains like spokes of a wheel.Over 400 of these walls of hard rockhave been identified and can be fromone-foot to 100-feet wide, up to 100-feet high and as long as 14 miles.
Circling the mountains on theScenic Highway of Legends (Hwy 12)provides a great way to track the histo-ry, culture and geology of the region.
The western border of HuerfanoCounty follows the ridgeline of theSangre de Cristo (“Blood of Christ”)mountain range, crossed by many his-torical figures as well.
No matter your interests,Huerfano County will satisfy them.
Recreation options abound. We arehome to three National ForestWilderness Areas inside the San IsabelNational Forest. Lathrop State Parklies just west of Walsenburg and offers
motorized and non-motorized boat-ing, fishing and hiking opportunities. Two Colorado Wildlife Areas providegreat fishing and wildlife viewing.
Discover our history at the MiningMuseum and Francisco Fort Museum.
Play Grandote Peaks, our champi-onship golf course in La Veta, or ourone-of-a-kind 9-hole course insideLathrop State Park.
Nature is at our door; we havebird watching (488 varieties have beenseen) and wildlife viewing as our wildcountry is home to elk, deer, prong-horn, bear, mountain lion, bighornsheep, turkey and many others.
Shop the quaint Main Street artgalleries, gift shops and boutiques.Great music is abundant during thesummer both at local venues and festi-vals and special events.
However you choose to spend
your vacation time, you’ll find some-thing to enjoy here in this comprehen-sive Visitor’s Guide.
Local small businesses worktogether to bring you this guide, andwill insure you have a wonderful visit. Please patronize the restaurants, shops and attractions inside thisguide.
Escape from the stress, hustle, bus-tle of daily life to a place where youcan still see the Milky Way, hear birdssinging or just the babble of a brook.Enjoy Huerfano County, Colorado.
Enjoy your stay, but beware theenergy of the Spanish Peaks—it willpull you back again and again.

Blue and Bear LakesRecreation at 10,000’
Whether youare looking forovernight campingor just a day in thegreat outdoors,Blue Lake and BearLake are great des-tinations.
The U.S. Forest Service operates the twofacilities that are enjoyed for picnics, hiking, fishing and camping.
Blue Lake is a lake located at 10,000’ eleva-tion. The campground has 15 official sites. There are rest rooms and drinking water avail-able. The fishing is excellent and there are sev-eral trailheads leading into the Sangre deCristo Mountains nearby. There is a crossroadat the campground and if you take the left, you’ll be starting up the hill to Trinchera Peak.Up about a mile-and-a-half is the northern endof the North Fork Trail.
Bear Lake is about one mile further up theroad. Bear Lake Campground is located at10,500’ elevation and has 14 official campsites. There are rest rooms and drinking water avail-able. Camping, picnicking, fishing, and park-ing are fee activities. There are also several hik-ing trailheads nearby.
In the early 1900’s, there was a large blackbear causing a lot of havoc in the area and oneof the Forest Rangers set a trap for it. The nextday he went to retrieve the trap but it wasgone. Later on, the trap was found in the mid-dle of the lake, still attached to a bear. The bearwas so large that he had dragged the trapcross-country and into the lake, that’s howBear Lake got the name.

Mission:WolfWho’s afraid of the big bad wolf?
Fables and fairytales have long portrayedthe wolf as a stalker of humans and animalsand instilled fear in all who may encounterthe wild animal. But those who visitMission:Wolf, located 15 miles north ofGardner, will leave with a deeper apprecia-tion of this magnificent predator.
Kent Weber began rescuing wolves 25years ago, and he and his wife, TracyBrooks, established Mission:Wolf in 1988 on20 acres nestled at the base of GreenhornMountain. The refuge is now home todozens of captive-born grey wolves andwolf-dog crosses.
The refuge allows visitors to view theanimals from an elevated walkway. Manyof the fenced areas contain several acres forthe wolves to roam. Some may want to takethe unique opportunity to interact withwolves, under supervision.
As a nonprofit organization, the refugeoperates completely on volunteer effortsand cash donations.
They do not charge an admission fee,but ask visitors to make a donation or pur-chase souvenirs from the gift shop.
Directions: From Gardner, follow Hwy. 69north 1.5 miles. Turn right on Gardner Road.Go north 13.5 miles and turn right at BlueSpring after the cattle guard. Follow the drive-way 1.5 miles along the fence. Four-wheel driveis recommended November through May.Drive time is approximately one hour fromWalsenburg.

Black bear encounters can occuron the trail, in town or in yourown backyard
This black bear was taking a stroll down Ryus Ave. in La Veta during the day. Drought conditions have dimin-ished their natural food sources, forcing them into town to look for alternatives.
Black bears are fairly common in the La Veta andCuchara area. It is estimated there are between 16-18,000 bears in Colorado and while the colors varyfrom honey-colored, brown, blonde, black or cinna-mon — they are all black bears.
The black bear is an omnivore and will eat justabout anything. A bear’s natural diet is grasses, berries, fruits, nuts and plants, as well as insects andscavenged carcasses.
Follow a few simple tips if you are camping orvisiting in bear country so both people and bearsremain safe.
It’s important to stash your trash. Their nosesare very sensitive, about 100 times better than oursand they can smell food five miles away. Use a bear-proof garbage bin and don’t keep garbage or otherfood stuffs in the garage.
Keep your camp clean. If you are camping inbear country keep your camp clean. Double bagyour trash and put it in your RV or vehicle if there isno bear-proof container near-by. Don’t leave yourcoolers, bags or boxes outside.
Never feed a bear. There is a saying amonglocals: A fed bear is a dead bear. It is against the lawto feed bears in Colorado.
Encountering a bear. When hiking in bearcountry it is wise to have bear repellant with youand be alert. Be extra cautious at dawn, when thewind is in your face, visibility is limited or whenwalking by a noisy stream. A firm clap or a quickshout warns bears that people are around.
Wild black bears seldom attack unless they feelthreatened, cornered or are provoked. If you sur-prise a bear on a trail, stand still, stay calm and letthe bear identify you, then leave. Talk in a normaltone of voice, be sure the bear has an escape route.Do not run. Back away from the bear and slowlymove away.
You can make eye contact with the bear butdon’t stare. Continue to watch to see what it isdoing. Never climb a tree to escape a bear. If yousee cubs, their mother is near and you need to leavethe area immediately.
A bear standing up is just trying to identifywhat it’s seeing. It wants a better view and smell.Wave your arms slowlyoverhead and talk calmly asyou are backing away.Sometimes it may be aggres-sive but this is rare. If itapproaches to within 40 feet, use the bear spray.
If you are attacked by ablack bear, do not playdead, fight back. Fight withanything available. Peoplehave successfully defendedthemselves with pen knives, trekking poles and even barehands. Bears generally wantto avoid confrontations withhumans.

1. Be aware of the lighting and yourcomposition. Sometimes you want to takea photograph but the light is wrong. Notethis location and come back in early morn-ing or late afternoon to see if you like whatyou see. Then take your shot.
Farley's Overlook, near the top ofCordova Pass is a good place for wildflow-ers if you are here in season. The Pike-SanIsabel National Forest is also a prime placefor seeing elk, mule deer and a variety ofbirds. Wahatoya and Daigre Lakes, neartown provide habitat for osprey, egrets, cormorants, ducks and other waterbirds.
2. Depth of field determines if youwant everything in focus throughout thephoto or have a shallow depth of field tofocus on a single Iris. Don’t be afraid toexperiment. Find out what each of thoselittle symbols on your camera mean. Takethe same picture with several different set-tings and find out what pleases you. Readthrough your in-struction book butmore importantly, take lots of photos.
You might headup Hwy 12, theHighway of Legendsand find somemountain goats or ascenic view that youwant to capture. TheDevil’s Stair Stepsare a geological fea-ture you may wantto shoot, because youwon’t see anythinglike it anywhere else.
3. Composition is important. Usingthe Rule of Thirds, imagine there are nineequally sized squares in your viewfinder.Line up your subject on the intersections ofthese lines. Usually, it makes for a moreinteresting shot to have your subject mat-ter offset from the center.
If you’re driving up Cuchara Pass, youmight pull off the side of the road to catcha rare photo of a black bear. There are alsomany scenic opportunities on this road.
4. Think about using a tripod. Theysteady the camera and generally produce ahigher quality image than handhold shots. Also study up on shutter speed and aper-ture.
Wander down to the Cuchara Riverand try different settings as you shoot thewater flowing by. Can you get it to lookmilky like those “pro’s” do?
5. Take your camera with you and tryto take photos daily. Learning about pho-
tography and how touse your camera canbe almost as muchfun as taking the pic-ture.
And, here inSpanish PeaksCountry, you willhave lots of greatchoices of what toshoot.
Cathy Mullens is alocal nature andwildlife photographer. Her work can be foundin the SPACe Gallery inLa Veta.
Photography TipsToday's digital cameras and even high-end "point and shoots" can turn out a nice snap-

Many visitors traveling to ourarea who live at lower elevationsmay experience altitude sickness.People who normally live at ornear sea level are more prone toacute mountain sickness, especiallyupon exertion.
Acute mountain sickness isbrought on by the combination ofreduced air pressure and loweroxygen concentration that occur athigh altitudes.
Symptoms can range frommild to life-threatening. In mostcases the symptoms are mild.
Approximately 20 percent ofpeople will develop mild symp-toms at altitudes between 6,300 to9,700 feet.
Symptoms generally associat-ed with mild to moderate altitudeillness include: • Difficulty sleeping • Dizziness or light-headedness • Fatigue• Headache• Loss of appetite• Nausea or vomiting• Rapid pulse (heart rate)• Shortness of breath with exertion
People with anemia have a reduced red bloodcell count, and therefore have a lower amount ofoxygen carried in the blood. Those prone to ane-mia should consult a doctor regarding an iron sup-plement.
Drink plenty of fluids, especially water, avoidalcohol, and eat regularly. Foods should be rela-tively high in carbohydrates.
People with underlying heartor lung diseases should avoid highaltitudes.
Early diagnosis is important.Acute mountain sickness is easierto treat in early stages.
The main treatment for allforms of mountain sickness is todescend to a lower altitude as rap-idly and safely as possible. Youshould not continue climbing if youdevelop symptoms. Extra oxygenshould be given, if available.
People with severe mountainsickness may need to be admittedto a hospital.
Call 911 or seek emergencymedical assistance if severe diffi-culty breathing develops, or if younotice a lower level of alertness, orother severe symptoms such asconfusion, coughing up blood, orshortness of breath at rest.
Enjoy your visit to our valley.
