The installation ceremony---what was evident---!!!
Punctuality is probably a virtue of the newly appointed….[Sharat and myself …no early bird
prizes!]
Mistakes do attract more attention—[the obvious mistakes in the banner and the newsletter were
pointed out…hmph don't humans err? ]
Generation gaps don't exist![The crowd was a mix of senior and junior IAPians and their wonderful
interaction proved that wisdom and effervescence are needed in the right blend for an organisaton to
click][ Only when you meet and interact with people do you realize they are not as bad as you
thought they were!!!].

Coming to business……
The outgoing secretary's report on MBIAPS accomplishments during his tenure and his gratitude to all the, members who contributed for the same[ though he may have missed a few names on his slide presentation] was pictorial and pleasing and not crowded with numbers and statistics!
This was followed by an exhaustive talk –'life skills for pediatricians'-on changing values and priorities in pediatric practice -laden with satire and humour, by Dr. R D Potdar- senior IAPian who was felicitated with a lifetime achievement award.

The outgoing president's very crisp but sensible words alluding to the need for unsponsored programmes was thought-provoking [reference to--EMBICON].[To keep us away from finger pointing and media attention]
The incoming president's plans for the year[colorful with a lot of promise] laid emphasis on community medicine and creation of a directory for the availability of ICU beds in various institutions in the city .
The proceedings culminated with acknowledgment and felicitation [lifetime achievement award]of a great teacher and a wonderful human being –Dr.Armida Fernanadez. Her contribution not only as a teacher but also a crusader for betterment of mother and child health(through her SNEHA foundation-)cannot be lauded enough. Her speech 'every child counts' was an enlightening process.
Spiritual feast towards the end was enjoyed by all as we called it a day!Hmmmmmm….. all said and done we still have the two groups- the ones who work and the ones who would like to take credit for it.[ I always prefer the first group as there is less competition there!].

Indian Academy of Pediatrics, Mumbai. Monthly Newsletter, Vol. 4, April 2013
The World Health Organization (WHO) and the Centers for Disease Control & Prevention (CDC, USA) have advocated the use of alcohol hand rubs to prevent cross transmission of infections. So let's take a peek into some facts that will positively impact our clinical practice!
Choosing your alcohol rub: ü Most alcohol-based hand antiseptics contain ethanol, isopropanol (2-propanol) or n-propanol (1-propanol) , or a combination of two of these productsü Emollients are always present in hand rubsü Gels, solutions or foams are all equally effectiveü Chlorhexidine containing alcohol rubs are not essential in the day to day practice, plain alcohol based solutions suffices.

ICU AVALIABILITY IN MUMBAI-DIRECTORY/WEBSITE FACILITY
In a city of Mumbai even though we boast of the best management for our sick children, availing of a bed for our lower socio economic class in the time of a crises when the child is critical is a nightmare. Invariably they run from pillar to post often with a note from the local political leader or a social worker to end up dismayed due to refusal by most BMC/charitable institutes. The woeful shortage of ICU beds, compounded with the apathetic attitude of some management authorities prompted me to initiate this project.
We are planning to compile a directory and website for availability, facilities provided
and rates (in case of private sector or trust) of all ICUs (neonatal and pediatric) in Mumbai. For
this I solicit the cooperation of each and every one of you who is catering to intensive care.
Kindly inform via email or phone-your details
NamePhone no.Name of your hospital/visiting hospital(private or trust )No. of bedsLevel of careNo. of ventilators availableICU rates
Our email [email protected]/You can inform MrNilesh or MrVinod at our IAP office Ph – 022-24045803
Friends, I implore upon you to be proactive and furnish the details at the earliest .If other states can clamp down other NMRs and Under 5 MRs why should we lag behind?
NURSING TRAINING COURSE
It is a fact that good competent nurses contribute the backbone or the major component of management of indoor patients particularly the ICUs. Sadly this aspect has not been given enough priority especially in private setups. Moreover because of gross shortage of nurses often we tend to resort to appoint untrained trainees. A good efficient intelligent trained nurse goes a long way in giving you peace of mind when you are away from the hospital. With this in mind Mumbai IAP has initiated a training course comprising of 8-10 lecture series with hands on practical training in paediatric and ICU skills to be held on Sundays in the MBIAP office. You can register the names of your hospital; nurse (irrespective of their qualification). The training or lectures are arranged to be given by nursing tutors and trained doctors. Skills in identifying sick babies, practical management, short background theory behind management, ICU monitoring will be dealt upon.
stWe will be registering the 1 60 students on first come first serve basis. The course will start in May (further details will be in the next news letter). So please hurry!
A small charge of Rs 500 per student will be charged for working lunch and handouts notes
