FOCUS Each year, the American Cancer Society estimates the numbers of new cancer cases and deaths that will occur in the United States. A total of 1,685,210 new cancer cases and 595,690 cancer deaths are projected to occur in the United States in 2016. They are so diverse in their individual biology; clinical course management of many of these cancers is increasingly difficult, constantly evolving and fraught with controversy. In this environment, it has become much more difficult and complicated for those involved in the care of cancer patients, to remain current in best practice for each of the many tumor types that constitute “cancer.” This year our faculty will profile and discuss the clinical and technical advances, promising clinical trials data, national guidelines and key controversies in the management of breast cancer, lung cancer, head and neck cancers, gastrointestinal malignancies, melanoma, hematologic malignancies and gynecologic cancer. Through leading-edge lectures, case discussion and interactive question and answer sessions, this intensive four-day program will provide participants with an enhanced ability to interpret and apply these best treatment options into their individual cancer practices.

TARGET AUDIENCE This educational program is intended for internists, family practitioners, gynecologists, surgeons, medical oncologists, radiation oncologists, surgical oncologists, hematologists, gastroenterologists, dermatologists and other allied health care professionals interested in the treatment of patients with cancer.

OBJECTIVES• Describe the current status and new developments in

the treatment of melanoma

• Assess the utilization of new therapeutic options for those diagnosed with hematologic malignancies

• Integrate genetic counseling into the management of patients at risk for cancer

• Identify optimal techniques in the therapy of gynecologic cancers

• Cite advances and controversies in breast cancer management

• Assess new data, and therapeutic and surgical options available for patients diagnosed with pancreatic and liver cancer

• Explain the role of physicians in the narcotic epidemic

• Manage patient expectations regarding cancer-related pain and the controversies regarding physician assisted suicide

• Discuss advances in smoking cessation

• Debate the advantages and disadvantages of lung cancer screening

• Identify ideal strategies in diagnosing and treating head and neck, laryngeal and lung cancer
