+Writing
Students are assigned to begin writing the draft for their book reviews on Their Eyes Were Watching God while in class
Students will begin writing their first draft in class and for homework
Students will write their final draft after conferencing with me in order to go over their drafts
Students will be asked to take a break from writing their drafts of their book reviews in order to create a small advertisement to sell the book to the class.
CCSS.ELA-Literacy. W. 11-12. 3d Use precise words and phrases, telling details, and sensory language to convey a vivid picture of the experiences, events, setting, and/or characters.
+Reading
Students will have just finished reading Their Eyes Were Watching God By Zora Neale Hurston
Students will re-read parts of the novel in order to complete the book review and their advertisement.
Need to use quotes and textual evidence from the text to support their arguments (either positive or negative).
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.RL.11-12.1 Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text, including determining where the text leaves matters uncertain.
+Speaking
Each student will present for about 3 minutes in order to tell the class the best things about the book, and explain why they think the book is worth reading.
Should bring the attention of their classmates back to certain parts of the text, and speak loudly and clearly
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.11-12.4 Present information, findings, and supporting evidence, conveying a clear and distinct perspective, such that listeners can follow the line of reasoning, alternative or opposing perspectives are addressed, and the organization, development, substance, and style are appropriate to purpose, audience, and a range of formal and informal tasks.
+Listening
Students will actively listen to each other when they present their advertisements by taking notes on some of the key aspects that other classmates mentioned
These notes will be helpful in writing their book report because it will provide them with more details that they may have not thought of
Students will rate each others’ advertisements based on the content of the speech and the presentation itself
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL. 12.4 Evaluate a speaker’s point of view, reasoning, and use of evidence and rhetoric, assessing the stance, premises, links among ideas, word choice, points of emphasis, and tone used.
