Rockabilly is one of the earliest styles of rock and roll
music, dating to the early 1950s in the United States,
especially the South. As a genre it blends the sound of
Western musical styles such as country with that of
rhythm and blues leading to what is considered
"classic" rock and roll. Some have also described it as a
blend of the bluegrass style with rock and roll. The
term "rockabilly" itself is a portmanteau of "rock"
(from "rock 'n' roll") and "hillbilly", the latter a
reference to the country music (often called "hillbilly
music" in the 1940s and 1950s) that contributed
strongly to the style. Other important influences on
rockabilly include western swing, boogie woogie, jump
blues and electric blues.
Defining features of the rockabilly sound included
strong rhythms, vocal twangs and common use of the
tape echo, but the progressive addition of different
instruments and vocal harmonies led to its "dilution".
Initially popularized by artists such as Bill Haley, Elvis
Presley, Carl Perkins, Johnny Cash, Bob Luman and
Jerry Lee Lewis, the influence and success of the style
waned in the 1960s; nonetheless, during the late 1970s
and early 1980s, rockabilly enjoyed a major revival
through acts such as Stray Cats. An interest in the
genre endures even in the 21st century, often within a
subculture. Rockabilly has left a legacy, spawning a
variety of sub-styles and influencing other genres such
as punk rock.
The Viva Las Vegas Rockabilly Weekend is an annual event that brings together around 20,000 fans of rock 'n’ roll from around the world. Viva Las Vegas puts on the largest pre-1960s era car show in North America and also features burlesque shows, tattoo workshops, pool parties and a fashion show. Whether you’re a hot rod aficionado, pelvis-shakin' Elvis impersonator or just looking to party in Vegas, this is the festival for you! Las Vegas is set to travel back to a time of pin-up girls, greaser hairstyles and 1957 Ford Customs. “Rockabilly is based on ’50s songs and music,” said organizer Tom Ingram. “It’s ’50s rock music without the piano or sax.”

Born in Oklahoma in 1937, singer Wanda Jackson began performing while
still in high school and had signed with Capitol Records by the time she was
20. Her hit songs, including 1959's "Let's Have a Party," climbed both the
country and rock charts, earning her the "Queen of Rockabilly" title. Hard
. Headed Woman - is one of my personal favorites. She was
. inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2005.
In 2009, the 72-year-old was approached by Jack White of the White Stripes
to record a cover album. One of the tracks he selected for her was a racy hit
about infidelity by Amy Winehouse called "You Know I'm No Good." She
told an interviewer, "At first, I said, 'He's gotta be kidding. He wants me to
record this? I don't think it'll be very believable." She agreed to do it, even
performing the song on Letterman alongside White in 2011. The well-
received resulting album, The Party Ain't Over, proved that Wanda Jackson
still wasn't ready to give up her title as the Queen of Rockabilly.
