WHO COULD VOTE?
White men who owned property were the only ones allowed to vote in the USA
Later any white male born in the USA
After the civil war in 1884, African American males could vote

WOMEN COULD NOT VOTE
People thought women too dumb to understand politics If women voted they
would stop getting married, they would stop having children and the human race would die out
Women were too emotional to handle voting
Women had little rights Women could not own
property Only “bad” women
worked, women couldn’t work
Women couldn’t get a divorce and if they divorced they could not get custody of the children

SUFFRAGE MOVEMENT-FIGHT FOR VOTING Women began to
fight for the right to vote Marches, protests,
wrote letters It was a very long
process- Took years Wyoming was the 1st
state to let women vote

right to vote The 19th Amendment
was added to the US Constitution “The right of citizens
of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State on account of sex.”

RESULTS OF SUFFRAGE FOR WOMEN Women could now vote

Extra time gave women time to find jobs = make more money = buy more stuff
Women became leading consumers (spenders of money) after the 19th amendment
